Title: Mega Man Whatever cancelled
Post by: HertzDevil on September 01, 2011, 09:15:48 AM
Mega Man 11
Mega Man Universe
Mega Man Legends 3

72 by HKLurch18

It once died because of Florian Hufsky's death, which halted the V1.9 update of Super Mario War, which in turn put their forum into oblivion. And then it was suddenly revived.

RETRON by CadmiumRED

This is the latest demo of Retron I owned before the Dropbox is unshared. It did storm over the Mega Man fanbase, being the only game so far with an authentic MM9 look and an accurate engine programmed in SDL and ported to Wii. Note that the video is not recorded by the official team, whose channel had been removed for long - instead it is played by MexicanSunflower, the creator of Time Tangent. (inb4 self promotion)

DO however keep an eye on this one. Rumors say that Retron might revive under a new name. I wonder who had once said things along the lines of "RIP MM72"...?

NEW TOMORROW by Stardius

This fangame started a long time ago but then fell into comatose very soon as the programmer left. Yes. Apparently, it aims towards MM5/10's gameplay style, and refuses to use any existing Mega Man engine (N64Mario, Blyka, Kurofox, Tesserex) before the only engine demo in it was scrapped.

Yeah, Wily Wars. I think he removed all tilesets on his deviantART page though. The best part is that he once argued to me that he renamed most of the Robot Masters after reading my List so that there would be no conflicts. Hmmm.

I guess we haven't shown enough love to some of those obscure game makers.

FADE by Interrobang Pie

I shouldn't, because most contents of Fade are only visible in his Dropbox. But oh well, with an almost complete soundtrack I think it is safe to say that it is cancelled.

Yes the Mega Man community is falling apart. RIP

I am not sure if that is all, though

I don't remember a Mega Man 11 being announced, so you can't really consider that canceled..
It's still surprising how many fangames are getting cancelled before release, and how coincidentally so are the actual games.

Fangames get cancelled left and right, it's not the end of the world, it has nothing to do with Universe and Legends 3 being cancelled. It's NORMAL. The only reason you are acting this way is due to all the "Megaman is dying" nonsense floating around the internet making you notice the cancellations more.

There's actually a good number of fangames that have been completed and released, both Mega Man and non-Mega Man. Buuuut yea, for every completed one there's about a million canned ones. Usually, you have people coming up with 'ideas' that sound great but then they can not program. Sometimes they rely on other people to program for them, but eventually the programmer will get too busy or the project will become too much of a headache. Then you got ALL of the sprites you have to make (you can rip and edit all you want, but making stuff like new bosses and new backgrounds is no picnic. Heck, recreating old bosses and old background is bad enough).

Basically, unless you have a team that's REALLY dedicated to doing it (like you're all super good and skilled friends), you should not expect to get a big fangame done. Unless you're making a majority of the sprites or are doing all of the programming, you can not really expect others to do all of the work for you. Unless you give them lots and lots of money.

SO yea...there's a number of finished fangames, but there's a bunch of cancelled ones too, as to be expected.

As for Legends 3 and Universe, that's a separate sad story altogether. I think Capcom's going to definitely announce a new Mega Man title in the near future, rather than leave the series to die, however I'm not so sure for the Legends series. If Capcom did not think there was enough fans this time around, it's not like they're magically going to think later that there is and start up a sequel again. So, if Capcom ever offers anyway to show support for Legends, I'll be there day one, cause otherwise THAT particular series is dead.

Oh, well, back to the hollow Fan Factory, where all the other semi-diligent workers are...

WELL

As far as I know, Megaman Unlimited is still going fine. I hope it will eventually be finished

And MM72 forum on 72dpi is still active. They are working on it, either secretly or incredibly slowly.

But yeah, it is hard to make a fan game that plays just like the original series. Even Rockman 7 FC physics isn't perfect. At least I had the feeling that it's a bit different.

But hey, MM8BDM is a finished MM fan game, isn't it?  :p

Any fangame is going to be at least a LITTLE different engine-wise compared to the real games. If you really want it to feel exactly the same, then you should figure out how to hack one of the older games (which is really tough because then you have to work with the NES limitations and code that you did not build from the ground up but yea).

I personally do not mind if the engine is a bit 'off' or different, as long as it plays ok. Some people spend all their time trying to perfect the engine, when they should be more worried about innovating and adding new features to make their game stand out.
