Title: (Updated) What's your personality type? (Meyers-Briggs)
Post by: Tesseractal on October 10, 2011, 06:45:31 AM
Take the revised test here (http://kisa.ca/personality/)

Read about what it means here (http://typelogic.com/)

Have you ever wondered "how do I describe my personality"? Or attempted to and came up with a simple answer like "Smart, nice, and kind"? This might give you a better insight into how you act and a largely general description of you (obviously they won't be spot-on). Each type is broken down into four pairs of traits that oppose each other, with the letter being the more dominantly expressed or "preferred" of the two - most people carry shades of both of each.

Extraversion (E) - (I) Introversion
Sensing (S) - (N) Intuition
Thinking (T) - (F) Feeling
Judgment (J) - (P) Perception

A sample description on E vs. I, for example:
Extraverts are action oriented, while introverts are thought oriented.
Extraverts seek breadth of knowledge and influence, while introverts seek depth of knowledge and influence.
Extraverts often prefer more frequent interaction, while introverts prefer more substantial interaction.
Extraverts recharge and get their energy from spending time with people, while introverts recharge and get their energy from spending time alone.

And so on, with similar differences for the other types (there's a lot to know!).I'm personally an ENTJ.

Taking it again, I'm an ISTJ.

ISFJ. It misses on several of their points, including much of the entire second paragraph.

Most of my percentages were in the 20s, except for N, which was 38%.

INFJ

Introverted: 78
Intuitive: 50
Feeling: 12
Judging: 1

Counselor Type:
Counselors are scarce, little more than three percent of the population, and can be hard to get to know, since they tend not to share their innermost thoughts or their powerful emotional reactions except with their loved ones. They are highly private people, with an unusually rich, complicated inner life. Friends or colleagues who have known them for years may find sides emerging which come as a surprise. Not that Counselors are flighty or scattered; they value their integrity a great deal, but they have mysterious, intricately woven personalities which sometimes puzzle even them.

INFJs are deeply concerned about their relations with individuals as well as the state of humanity at large. They are, in fact, sometimes mistaken for extroverts because they appear so outgoing and are so genuinely interested in people -- a product of the Feeling function they most readily show to the world. On the contrary, INFJs are true introverts, who can only be emotionally intimate and fulfilled with a chosen few from among their long-term friends, family, or obvious "soul mates." While instinctively courting the personal and organizational demands continually made upon them by others, at intervals INFJs will suddenly withdraw into themselves, sometimes shutting out even their intimates. This apparent paradox is a necessary escape valve for them, providing both time to rebuild their depleted resources and a filter to prevent the emotional overload to which they are so susceptible as inherent "givers." As a pattern of behavior, it is perhaps the most confusing aspect of the enigmatic INFJ character to outsiders, and hence the most often misunderstood -- particularly by those who have little experience with this rare type.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Interestingly enough, when I did my Independent Research Project at St. Cloud University, I almost did it on personality (It turned into Gender Stereotypes as they relate to mathematical ability). I always preferred O.C.E.A.N. (Openness, Concientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism) to the Meyers-Briggs, as it is also used to predict possible mental illness. The problem I have with tests like this is that, no matter how you word it, some questions are going to be too vague for some people to answer correctly. For example: "I prefer to have many acquaintances" means different things to different people. Even a hard line introvert may like having a lot of acquaintances if the word is understood as people they like whom they don't spend a lot of time with. Other people may understand the term as implying a deeper relationship. Other questions such as, "I usually act impulsively rather than plan" can be confusing as well. For example: For things of importance, I plan. For things of no importance, I do not.

Regardless, these tests are usually surprisingly accurate given their limitations.

Is "12" a low ranking for feelings?

:<

Not quite. Instead of seeing each number as a percentage of how much it you have (e.g. you are 88% sociopathic), instead see it as a preference over its counterpart. In this case, the counterpart to Feeling is Thinking. In scenarios that require you to choose between thinking and feeling, you have a preference for Feeling, but just minor (according to the prediction). If you were 100% Feeling, it would suggest you entirely disregard thinking, turning you into my mortal enemy which would make you less flexible. How people perceive results as good or bad depends how different the predictions are from their preferences - if you want to be 50 or 100% feeling and you didn't get that, you might not always be acting in a Feeling-manner.

It's sort of like a black-white sliding scale on PhotoShop. You move toward black (Feeling), you move away from white (Thinking). Having low numbers doesn't imply a "lack" of some trait; it just means your preference for it isn't high. My "extraverted" was only slightly expressed (like 5-15%) implying I have shades of both traits, just seen more often as extraversion. Contrast, my "judgment" preference was around 70%, implying I impose judgment on everything am less likely tend to "perceive" things. You have to look into the meanings of each word in context (e.g. sensing vs. intuition) to know whether or not you should consider it "bad". I don't really think it'll be "bad", unless you want a stronger/weaker preference.

Of course, which is why I tend to see questions as reflective rather than a single scenario. (I'm an extravert, "breadth of knowledge" after all) For example, imo the statement "I prefer reading a book to seeing people" is really limited. I would include say "I prefer enjoy reading TVTropes more than Facebook / FB chats" as a more modern example - reading a book has this anti-social stigma going. I dunno why it shows up so much on these tests. >.>

Well, okay. That makes me feel less bad. I was afraid that I might not actually be in touch with my feelings and emotions.

The Keirsey description (http://keirsey.com/4temps/counselor.asp) made me feel better overall, though, and I think it does a good job at describing me.

Post by: xColdxFusionx on October 10, 2011, 09:01:10 PM
None of the types are "bad" or "good". It's just how you think.

Do you like to learn a lot about specific things/people (I) or a little about many things/people (E)?
Do you gather lots of information from the outside world (S) or just go with what you think (N)?
Do you base your decisions on the information you gather (T) or on the emotions they evoke (F)?
Do you prefer to plan your actions out (J) or do you prefer to make things up on the spot (P)?

Everyone draws from a little bit of all eight subtypes, and all of them have their own advantages and disadvantages. Your "type" is just what you prefer.

The key to these personality tests is to not think about your responses too hard. "Go with your gut", as the old saying goes.

Wait for a while to clear your mind of the questions, then take it over keeping that in mind.

It just a generalization, some part of it should be reflective. That is a fairly common typing, I recall.

From INTJ to ISTJ:

Introverted (I) 70% Extraverted (E) 30%
Sensing (S) 50% Intuitive (N) 50%
Thinking (T) 70% Feeling (F) 30%
Judging (J) 55% Perceiving (J) 45%

But S and N are literally interchangeable.

I'm ISFP. I disagreed at first, until I read the Myers-Briggs description:

"According to Myers-Briggs, ISFPs are peaceful, easygoing people who adopt a "live and let live" approach to life. They enjoy taking things at their own pace and tend to live in the moment. Although quiet, they are pleasant, considerate, caring, and devoted to the people in their lives. Though not inclined to debate or necessarily even air their views, their values are important to them."

That sounds exactly like me.

ENTP

Extraverted (E) 64% Introverted (I) 36%
Intuitive (N) 64% Sensing (S) 36%
Thinking (T) 75% Feeling (F) 25%
Perceiving (P) 59% Judging (J) 41%

"Clever" is the word that perhaps describes ENTPs best. The professor who juggles half a dozen ideas for research papers and grant proposals in his mind while giving a highly entertaining lecture on an abstruse subject is a classic example of the type. So is the stand-up comedian whose lampoons are both funny and incisively accurate.

ENTPs are usually verbally as well as cerebrally quick, and generally love to argue--both for its own sake, and to show off their debating skills. ENTPs tend to have a perverse sense of humor as well, and enjoy playing devil's advocate. This sometimes confuses, even angers, those who don't understand or accept the concept of argument as a sport.

Alright! I'm the royal jerk!

Introverted (I)  71%     Extraverted (E)  29%
Intuitive (N)     55%     Sensing (S)       45%
Feeling (F)       75%     Thinking (T)      25%
Perceiving (P)   64%     Judging (J)        36%

I'd call myself a kind person that cares about people and supports justice (i'm a socialist btw) and sees life as "Here's your life have fun with it". Unneeded injustice is not good. I'm also motivated by good outcomes and seeing a goal that I can really like if reached.

I can't tell if the two aboves relate though.

Some questions seemed rather vague to me, i needed 4th options for that.

ISFJ
Introverted (I) 61%    Extraverted (E) 39%
Sensing (S) 68%    Intuitive (N) 32%
Feeling (F) 80%    Thinking (T) 20%
Judging (J) 59%    Perceiving (P) 41%

Quote
ISFJs are often unappreciated, at work, home, and play. Ironically, because they prove over and over that they can be relied on for their loyalty and unstinting, high-quality work, those around them often take them for granted--even take advantage of them.
Quote
Unlike with EPs, the older the friendship is, the more an ISFJ will value it. One ISFJ trait that is easily misunderstood by those who haven't known them long is that they are often unable to either hide or articulate any distress they may be feeling.
Quote
While their work ethic is high on the ISFJ priority list, their families are the centers of their lives. ISFJs are extremely warm and demonstrative within the family circle--and often possessive of their loved ones, as well.
These are some of the passages that do make sense about myself.

INFJ (54% - 68% - 85% - 55%)

I v. E: I expected to be more introverted than that. A lot more.
N v. S: Creative and disorganized. Yep.
F v. T: I used to be more of a thinking-type person but that changed in the last 3 or so years, drastically even.
J v. P: I see myself as rather in the middle in that aspect, but INFJ seems more fitting than INFP.

INTPs are: "often actually are oblivious to the world around them." (I am very distracted)
INTPs will often correct others (or be sorely tempted to) (I like to correct myself and others)
INTPs are relatively easy-going and amenable to almost anything until their principles are violated, about which they may become outspoken and inflexible. (I hate being a hypocrite, but I hate having to change my principles more.)
Mathematics is a system where many INTPs love to play, similarly languages, computer systems--potentially any complex system. (Math is off, but I do play with complex systems)

Well that test was spot on me.

I actually did a school project on this and got INTJ as opposed to ISTJ. Different testing website, but it's still fairly weird because there was only ~2 months of a gap between the two tests. I guess it makes sense though because the sensing vs. intuition spread was less than 10% on both accounts.

Personality test results

Your personality type is ISTP!
Introverted (I) 100%    Extraverted (E) 0%
Sensing (S) 86%    Intuitive (N) 14%
Thinking (T) 60%    Feeling (F) 40%
Perceiving (P) 64%   Judging (J) 36%

Some of the questions they asked me on the test actually made me want to punch the screen due to social confusion between IRL and the Internet. Which in turn, is unbelievably pathetic...

This actually puts some hope into my tiny semi-hopeless heart.

Perceiving (P) 68%   Judging (J) 32%
