Wow. The art is really clean and looks accurate. I like it a lot.

As for that thing next to Splash Woman, that's a robot master!?! I would've never guessed. I assumed it was some kind of Koopa.  :p

Anyway, nice artwork.

Hey Shmeckie, I recall seeing you on classes servers before. I haven't said this before so welcome to the forums, enjoy your stay blah blah blah blah
I must say, when I saw your avatar and that you were a freelance artist, I knew this thread was going to be full of win.

And win it is full of. Nicely done.

Glad y'all like mah stuff!

Yes, I love me some Classes. Being able to play as the Robot Masters as they were in their original games? Boner.

Speaking of Robot Masters...

This one's kinda old. I have my issues with it, but here it is anyway. Take a wild shot in the dark as to what song made me want to draw this. Go on. Bet you'll never guess it.

I was going to guess the Destruction of Monsteropolis, but it's probably going to be Airman ga Taosenai.

Looks nice, but as you probably know, his buster is a bit off~

Be my guest!

And I purposely tweaked his buster a bit. The plain tube he actually has just didn't look right, so I added a segment and a vent. I was going for a slightly motified, "gritty" to make him look as tough as the song depicted him.

And yeah, it's Air Man ga Taosentai. I drew that shortly after the song came out, though after hearing The Annihilation of Monsteropolis, I've had a hankering to draw him again, looking even more menacing.

Not everything I draw is Mega Man, y'know! >:(

(click to show/hide)

This one might count as risque, I dunno. It's not NSFW, but it's skimpy, and there's blood n' such.

Lately I've been working on a graphic novel where ALL THE CHARACTERS, with the exception of a monster, are lumberjacks. After awhile, you get tired of drawing dudes and want to depict a few ladies with your pencil. It just started as a simple picture of two women whose appearances I hadn't decided on yet. I happened to be listening to some metal as I drew the picture, and let's say the music I was listening to heavily influenced the picture.

Also, I made this pic, because I love Goombas:

Y'know Punk? Quite possibly my favorite boss from the series!

Well, I'm practicing "inking," as it were. I can't actually ink for crap, but I do have abnormally smooth pencil work (something I heard time and time again from the professionals who thumbed through my work at Comic-Con), so I've been practicing a way to convert my pencil work into pseudo-inking for greater job opportunities. So, Punk became my first exercise!

All the self-graffiti on Punk makes him seem all the more, well, punk-ish.

The city in the background reminds me of the one in Nitro Man's stage...Still loving that attention to detail, even to the background.

I took some time to try and look you up, because I was reaaaaaaaaaaaaly unsure if anyone else on the internet was Shmeckie. A few minutes of searching helped me confirm my suspicions. Not only do I appreciate your pencil work and your goes at inking, I happen to be a fan of your Project A.F.T.E.R. writings. I've been following that great little slice of bad anime fanfiction mockery for a while now, and the writing you contribute to that site along with Alex Barry and others is really keen.

Nice to see people still take notice of my work! I've been without computer, AND working on several projects, so I've been pretty inactive, lately. So, rememberring this thread exists, I thought I'd share a little som'm-som'm. Any Dragonball fans here?

So for the longest time, I've been working on this webcomic. I've been putting it off for over half a decade (because you know who you can get roped in with if you make a comic with anthropomorphic characters these days), but then I said "fuck it" and started work on the comic! After countless delays, it's finally online!

http://www.cloudscratcher.com (http://www.cloudscratcher.com)

Heavily inspired by the 90's era cartoons, as well as the Crimson Skies franchise, Cloudscratcher here is my baby, so to speak. Of all the comics I've come up with and pitched to publishers, this one is my favorite. Favorite cast, favorite storyline, favorite settings, etc. The premise (and beginning) may seem simple, but come along for the ride and you can look forward to a crazy cast of characters, an interesting storyline with plenty of twists and turns, and a few laughs along the way!

Yeah, the home page issue is fixed. It was being fixed while I posted the link, and it took a bit for the files to update.

Check this shit:

So I'm applying to work on Archie Comics' Mega Man comic, right? Well, what better way to show that I am concretely better than the artists they have now by re-drawing pages from the comic itself? So, now that I'm finally finished my application package, here's the four pages I redrew, complete with the original pages for comparison! Originals first, then my pencils!

First up, issue 13, pages 1 and 2. First appearance of Pharaoh Man:

Next, issue 10, pages 1 and 2. Mega Man gets curbstomped by Quick Man right after defeating Bubble Man.

Geez, that's awesome.

I like how you kept the general "vibe" of the original strip while changing some of the details. For instance, in the robotics convention panels the original frames showed things like Mets on the ground and a booth with "Spare Parts", while your frames had things like the girls gawking at Centaur Man. I loved that Nitro Man poster man, got a laugh out of that!

Hope you get the job, I think you'd be a great fit!

EDIT: Oh maaaaaan, I just saw the Mr. X booth. I can't stop laughing at that security guard.

I have to admit, I like the comic style quite a bit. It gives it a bit more originality than sticking to the artwork details.

Yours is still really nice though. Amazing job.

I loved the Telly Tech booth, by the way.
Title: Re: Shmeckie's Art Thrizzle!
Post by: Mr. X on July 06, 2012, 03:47:33 AM
Well, I figure I'm going to help you out by being extremely critical.  Keep in mind I'm purposely nitpicking since you're applying for the job, and that these points aside, this is damn fine work, and the characters look way closer to the official designs than Archie's.  Really, excellent work.

In general
-I haven't read the series so I don't know if there's precedents for this, but I think alluding to characters that Archie isn't ready to introduce yet could breed problems.  The Solar reference is fine since it's not a flat out placement of the character, but references to Mr. X, Centaur Man, and so on (other than Pharaoh, of course) should probably not be there.  Telly Tech is a welcome touch, though.

Page 1, Panel 1
-Elec Man's expression is way off from the original.  In the original, he looks like he's a smug jerk, which is what basically is implied by the next few panels.  In yours, it looks like he's reminiscing about like a girlfriend or something.

Page 1, Panel 2
-Other than the aforementioned early Centaur reference, this is pretty much an improvement in every way.  No complaints.

Page 2, Panel 1/Outside of Panel thing
-Elec Man's right eye (as in his right, our left) seems to be a bit too far over:  if you removed the lightning bolt mask-thing, it would be clearly sticking out of his head.  It also might be a tad too high up.

Page 2, Panel 2
-Roll's legs don't imply she's running quickly like they do in the original.  This is important since it's this careless quick running that causes trouble in the next panel.
-In your version, everybody is just kind of looking at Roll running.  In the original, they're trying to get out of her way, again showing she's being careless (of course, in the original, the characters are also too far away from her to be hit, but I'm 99% sure that's what they were going for, at least)

Page 2, Panel 3
-They need to be closer to one another.  While they don't need to be perfectly touching, it really doesn't look like they're close at all in your version.

Page 2, Panel 4
-I'm not sure if I like the emotion on the girl's face as much as in the original.  In the original, she's smiling to show everything is alright where here, she looks more like she's pleading with Pharaoh Man not to break Roll's face in.

Page 3
-This is another one where basically everything is an improvement.  I especially like the touch of having Mega Man's hair stick through the hole in the helmet.  No complaints.

Page 4, Panel 2/3
-In the original, it looks like Quick Man's kick sent Mega spiraling vertically through the air, which the...um...action lines imply he recovered directly from and landed in that exact pose.  In other words, he seamlessly transitioned from being kicked and flipping to landing and firing.  In yours, there doesn't really seem to be a way that he can seamlessly go from flying backwards in extreme pain to landing and firing.

Page 4, Panel 4
-Mega Man's pose seems to imply that the hit wasn't nearly as strong as in the original.  You don't have to go for the full out cartoonish look on the face like in the original, but having his arms a bit more spread out and in the air would help make it look more like the hit was strong enough to send him rocketing downward.
Title: Re: Shmeckie's Art Thrizzle!
Post by: Shmeckie on July 06, 2012, 04:58:56 AM
First of all, thanks for taking the time! I always appreciate some good ol' C&C. But, I figure I should address some of these, just to clarify:

Quote from: "Mr. X"

Mr. X already had a background reference in the comic, and everyone I referenced never had a concrete "birthdate." They had been around awhile before their respective games where they were reprogrammed. Concrete Man is slated to appear in an upcoming issue. Also this will never hit store shelves so I have a little more freedom.

Quote
Page 1, Panel 1
-Elec Man's expression is way off from the original.  In the original, he looks like he's a smug jerk, which is what basically is implied by the next few panels.  In yours, it looks like he's reminiscing about like a girlfriend or something.

Except he's not a smug jerk in the comics, he's more of the de facto leader of the original 6. That's why I fixed it so he's just chilling out and admiring the scenery. That's what put me off about the artist's depiction of him in the original; Elec Man is apparently on his period, there. I tried to tone him down to just an exasperated leader.

Quote
Page 2, Panel 2
-Roll's legs don't imply she's running quickly like they do in the original.  This is important since it's this careless quick running that causes trouble in the next panel.

Since Roll's legs aren't terribly visible in the original, I referenced an actual picture of a girl running.

Quote
Page 2, Panel 3
-They need to be closer to one another.  While they don't need to be perfectly touching, it really doesn't look like they're close at all in your version.

Roll bumping into her sent her flying, so her being closer wouldn't work.

Quote
Page 4, Panel 2/3
-In the original, it looks like Quick Man's kick sent Mega spiraling vertically through the air, which the...um...action lines imply he recovered directly from and landed in that exact pose.  In other words, he seamlessly transitioned from being kicked and flipping to landing and firing.  In yours, there doesn't really seem to be a way that he can seamlessly go from flying backwards in extreme pain to landing and firing.

Which is why I included speed lines and kicked-up dust to indicate that he flipped and skidded.

Quote
Page 4, Panel 4
-Mega Man's pose seems to imply that the hit wasn't nearly as strong as in the original.  You don't have to go for the full out cartoonish look on the face like in the original, but having his arms a bit more spread out and in the air would help make it look more like the hit was strong enough to send him rocketing downward.

Fair point. The idea was that the shock of the impact caused Mega Man to buckle, but I can see where you're coming from.

Also, I'm kinda sad how you left out the cool "Jet Man" dude in the background in Page 2.

Figured I'd update this. Before anyone asks, I haven't heard back from Archie. Not surprising, according to some prominent comic book artists, sadly, these companies only really hire any artists from submissions about 2% of the time. Wish I'dve known that before I wasted my time, but at least I have more pages to show off what I can do to future employers in my other applications.

Anyway, I've been trying to teach myself to color, lately, so I can expand my work and start applying for the more lucrative art jobs. Not quite at pro level yet, but I'm learning a lot and getting there. Here's a few pieces I did as color practice.

Title: still better than what I can do though
Post by: Korby on October 22, 2013, 05:46:53 AM
The background of the first one is fantastic. I'm not sure what to think about the figure, but I'm not too personally fond of how you shaded it, and it vaguely seems like the lightsources are the borders of the picture, given that his center is rather dark in comparison to other parts, like the lower coat or the wings[?]. The legs also bother me, but I can't quite place why. It may be because the muscle definitions use black outlines instead of a dark shade of blue, or maybe because they're connected? I don't know, not too educated on leg muscles.

The second one is nice.
Title: Re: Shmeckie's Art Thrizzle!
Post by: Shmeckie on October 22, 2013, 08:12:56 AM
His center is shaded darkly because he's leaning forward, blocking some of the light source which his center-high, and more omnipresent. As for the legs, I just went by the way the character is designed (http://images.wikia.com/capcomdatabase/images/2/2b/Darkstalkers3Jedah.png).

I'm afraid I only do art for money. Like I said, I do this professionally. And I'm afraid I'm not cheap...

How much you need for a black and white single-panel commission?

Depends. What size is the panel? What kind of art style is it? Is there a background? How many characters?

One character, DBZ art style, and a full-body shot panel, with no backround.
