Title: [Guide] How to get an avatar/upload images
Post by: MasterXman on January 12, 2012, 11:01:10 PM
This is just a topic that has a few easy steps to follow in order to get an avatar or upload an image.

Step 1. Go to imgur (http://www.imgur.com) (or photobucket)

Step 2. Register an account (This is optional. But if you wanna keep all those images you should register one)

Step 3. Upload an image from your images folder (also called Pictures folder)

Step 4. Copy the direct link

Step 5(FOR AVATARS). Go to User Control Panel, Profile, Edit Avatar
Step 5(FOR IMAGES IN GENERAL).  Go to the edit/reply/new topic button

Step 6(FOR AVATARS). Paste the direct link in the Url off site box.
Step 6(FOR IMAGES IN GENERAL). Click on the (IMG) button.

Step 7(FOR AVATARS). Press submit to add the avatar.
Step 7(FOR IMAGES IN GENERAL). Press preview to check if the image shows up. If it shows up then press submit.

These steps are easy to follow. Just follow them and you'll have an avatar/image soon.

Quickbeamed edit: Look at this quote below for resizing avatars.

I can help with that.

Firstly, Go to the Control Panel. You can get there VIA Either the "[# Of Messages] New Messages" Button or the User Control Panel.

(click to show/hide)

Then, Go to the "Profile" View Button.

(click to show/hide)

And Lastly, After hitting the "Edit Avatar" Button in the Profile view page, you can re-size the Avatar with the two Dialogue Boxes that are there.

(click to show/hide)

Although, You can't go over 128 for Either Dimensions. But as long as you don't, you can use almost anything as your avatar.

If only Cutmanmike could somehow do as my location says, this process could become MUCH simpler. Y/Y

Actually, this is more helpful than you think. You have no idea how many PM's I get with people asking me how to get an avatar.

I would never have guessed. I never get PM's about how to set an avatar. I must be the scary global mod no one wants to talk to.  :ugeek:

Hmm, maybe I'll get an avatar soon.

Nonsense, I'd never talk to someone with a monocle over you!  :geek:

Oh yes, kirbysonic. Your guide lacks information on how to resize avatars. And yes, there are people who need to know about that.

xxkirbysonicxx1: Nice guide ;)  If you add Travis guide to your post, will be better.

Also if you don't want to change the size of the avatar, then leave those values clear. It will set it on it's own then.

Surprisingly, I wrote that at almost 6 in the morning before 2 Pain-In-The-Ass Exams. But at least it explains the concept simply.

...seriously? We need an actual serious guide for this thing? You have lowered my faith in the competence of mankind further than what I thought was possible.

We all aren't computer geeks, ya' know.
Some of us have jobs and go outside, etc...

Well, I thought getting an avatar was pretty self-explanatory, really. I think Myroc is right.

Yeah, but they clearly explain to you to link off from another site and how to get there.

But what if you were TOTALLY new to computers, and didn't know anything?!

Windows guides and Internet explorer guides helped us in the darkest situation. This should too.

Yeah, there are new people that don't know how to put an avatar. Even if it looks like an obvious thing, I've met many new users from another forum that didn't know how to use an avatar.

You seem to have PM'ed this to me. I actually feel somewhat offended.

I have no avatar due to the sexiness of my location and the fact that all of you can form an opinion of me as soon as I give you an image to associate me with.

Regardless, if I am being viewed as a "noob" due to my lack of avatar, you have proven my location correct, mhm?

LOL, Carthief doesn't have an avatar neither.
But I think his medals fit as an avatar, I don't know why.

The title of the thread is misleading, so I'll do work for the title's actual meaning.

How to get an Avatar:

-Have a specific thing or character in mind
-Go to DeviantART and look up just the name of the character.
-Find an image that fits your tastes.
-Copy the picture, and open it up in Paint.NET.
-Use the select tool to select a 256x256 or 128x128 area that contains at least the entire head.
-Copy your selection and put it in a new Paint.NET window.
-Resize your selection to 128x128.
-Save as a .png and save it to your preferred image sharing site.
-You now have a bona fide LlamaHombre-Approved avatar!

So you'd approve it even if it said Flameman sucks?

I got something to ask:
How do you get animated avatars? (I often see users with animated avatars)

Use an animated GIF.

Both work just fine. Even animated GIFs work here.

Looks like I finally got myself an animated avatar now, thank you tutorial. You know, I actually thought it was something really convoluted to get the gifs as an avatar.
