Title: Llamas with Famitracker (MMZX)
Post by: LlamaHombre on February 01, 2012, 03:55:37 AM
Ok I'm kinda tired of the whole "mapchella covers" thing - If I promised you one just let me know and I'll try to capitalize but it's been two years now and keeping track of this crap is starting to get annoying

Following in the footsteps of Musashi-AA and Epic Kirby, I decided to keep my Famitracker covers in one thread that way I can put my projects in various lists. I could do this in YouTube as well, but I like having it here so that the community knows I make this stuff for them.

Just a quick request, though, if you do want to use any of this.

Do not attempt to retrieve the music from the video yourself. A simple PM on either here or YouTube saying that you wish to use it will be enough information I need. I will then loop the song for you in the highest quality possible.

But without further ado, my current products.

They seem pretty accurate, but something sounds off about them. I guess it's 'cause they were made in Famitracker, not pttune.

I actually had to spike Scorching Back down an octave.

Famitracker doesn't have an Octave 8, and I'm glad it doesn't.

Dunno if you've seen this, but it might be nice to have something to compare yourself to.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... -58#t=220s (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Ju0BGUTo-58#t=220s)

(The link starts at Scorching Back)

Like Korby said, the pitches seem fairly accurate. However I don't think it's something that's "off" as mainly something that's missing. You can compare the two covers and it seems yours is a bit "thin" texture-wise. (sorry if this doesn't help. If you want something more direct, you could try raising the percussion a bit. Or the tempo, in Eyes of Flame. That song doesn't quite have its "edge".)

I own the NSF of that.

And I realize that I will never be good at the Noise channel. That's the flavor I'm missing, though.

To be fair, that remix Ice-IX linked to uses expansion chips where you just used the usual setup.

So after several mishaps with system32.exe, I decided to try out an expansion chip.

I can see why people like them.

Added MMC5 Eyes of Flame to its spoiler tag.

This man right here

He's onto something.

You just need some practice with percussion sequencing and further instrumentation. Listen to MM3, then try covering any song in that game. Don't be afraid if it's a worn-out cover: the point here would be to gain practice on the complexity of a good percussion sequence.

There is also the usual lack of fade outs on square instruments, and the usual overusage of individual channel sound kill.

Listening to the OST, I feel Hard Man might be a good one to challenge myself with.

Thanks for the advice, Musashi.

I like it. This was one of my favorite tunes from Wily's Revenge. However, you did the bass wrong at... oh, just listen to this.

Listen from 0:13 to 0:39

There's a change in the bass when it does the second and fourth parts.

Plus, you didn't do the progressive bass riffs, heard throughout the song.

Otherwise, very good.

I have several reasons why I play the Dark side story of SA2 more than the Hero side.

One, Team Dark with the occasional Eggman is hands down my favorite combination of characters in any Sonic game.
Two, Shadow's levels, while being outnumbered by every other character, are amazing. They're smooth, quick, and to the point. You only need to search for one powerup, and it helps you throughout the rest of the game and gives you loads of motivation to replay Radical Highway, the one previous level before the upgrade. There's no bounce bracelet mapped to the same button as all your commands.

Not to mention Shadow's levels have some awesome eye candy, including the high drops in Radical Highway, the broken loop in White Jungle, and the breathtaking view of Earth in Final Chase.

Hey, speaking of White Jungle, it's up.

Judging by your silence, I thought you all exploded in space.

Happy belated Birthday to King Dumb, by the way, and I hope this will suffice well enough for a birthday gift.

Each time I check out the latest video you've posted, I keep thinking to myself "Damn, I really should post here and commend Llama for his work". Unfortunately, each time I check out the latest video you've posted I also forget to do so.

So now that I've finally gotten around to saying it, those are some nice Famitrackings there. Your Sonic Adventure 2 covers never fail to remind me of the times roughly 8 years ago when I played the living daylights out of that game.

In relation to your latest upload, 'For True Story', I liked the inclusion of the song from (if I can remember correctly) the cutscene prior to the not-so final boss battle; this touch particularly filled myself with nostalgia. Which is a good thing, mind you. Slightly disappointed the lyrical melody doesn't show up in the actual cover, but I'm sure what with it being a Famitracker cover and there being certain restraints that this wasn't really your fault.

This bugged the hell out of me as well, but I can't tell what those pitches are or I'd personally go back and fix it.

I'll probably do another boss theme next, or I'll finish Sky Rail and Green Forest

I UPDATED MY THREAD BUT THAT DOESN'T MATTER THIS IS MORE IMPORTANT

I loved Mapchella even if I only attended the first and last days, and I realized the importance of you mappers, and none of which I hadn't even heard of. To each of these mappers, I present a gift. A gift for stepping up and beyond the pressure.

Here's what my gift is comprived of:
-A Level Theme Cover of your choice
-A Boss Theme Cover of your choice
-Both Themes in the Soundchip of your choosing (2A03, MMC5, VRC6, VRC7, FDS, and the newest one)

The conditions of your gift:
-I cannot do songs that I don't have at least sheet music for. I'd prefer midis over everything, however.
-I do have the right to decline your song if one of the following happens. If so, please suggest a different song.
--I cannot cover your song
--I cannot make it sound good at all no matter what I do
--I cannot stand the song
--I cannot find sheet music of your song.
-If you decide to be an asshole about the gift and decide you'll pester me to no end about it until it's done, I'll take it back.

If I cannot find any sheet music, but you can, please let me know.

I'm not familiar with the original song, but I think Square 2 could have had notes being held during the surprisingly numerous amount of empty rows, because as of now, it feels like it's missing something along those lines.

Aside from that, I enjoy this cover a lot. Nice job, Labada!

Song is good, I guess.

Sequencing is sufficient, not horrible. Too much cutoff, needs more Axy usage. Lack of Pxy finetuning. I THINK I heard a slide somewhere that was done through instruments? Needs more Qxy.

7/10, wouldn't mind listening again.

Lack of Pxy finetuning.
I guess I understand what makes it special, but I don't think I needed it here.

It's either your imagination or I done fucked up somewhere

7/10, wouldn't mind listening again.
My mother raised me saying that anything below an 80% was an abomination, so I guess my current best isn't enough.

You don't really HAVE to abuse it, nor literally replace all cutoff with Axy. There's also manual fading with the pattern volume control...you just have to know where and when to manually decrease the channel volume.
Lack of Pxy finetuning.
I guess I understand what makes it special, but I don't think I needed it here.
It's kinda situational when it is really needed. I meant "finetuning" as "there was a moment when two channels played the same note and they overlapped each other, use Pxy to avoid that".
I THINK I heard a slide somewhere that was done through instruments? Needs more Qxy.

It's probably my imagination.

I've seen worse. Last time I saw your work, I would've probably given it a 6/10 because you nailed the basics of decent sequencing. As I said, you were onto something. This is lacking in most people. But yeah, you still have ways to go

Only really good? It's freaking Cave Story Music, which is next to Megaman tunes in my book.

One thing Cave Story was great at was expressing atmosphere and mood, and this song conveys a sense of despair while still seeming urgent, and then turns hopeful in the second half.

But otherwise the cover is solid. Sounds fairly accurate to my ears, anyway.

Oh, that's what you meant! I just thought it sounded better that way and helped illuminate the song's tone while combating less with the lead.

Mega Man ZX is easily the best Mega Man game to date and I'd really hope that some of you have listened to me and given it a try because it's so good.

How about I try to pursuade some of you a little more though

Oh god it's this thread again

I'll probably do this entire soundtrack to be honest. There are a lot of great tracks that just lodge themselves in my head and it'd be a disservice to not give this game the respect it truly deserves.

Hi it's been a while

Here's been my main project for like several weeks now. I really feel as if I've hit a groove at this point.

I also did this too but I don't really like it as much and ugh I'm so done with this song

Enjoy!

So you really made a cover of "Hunger Made Them Desperate".
Well, it's not nearly as good as the original (FM-Synth fangirl here), nor the Arcade Port's version, but it is amazing for being an NES cover.
And it beats the SNES version by several parsecs.
Great job!
And I really love Technosoft's music a lot in general.

Trying to get a little better at 2a03 because I haven't done that in a while.

I'm still primarily covering in MMC5, but I always feel that a little variety wouldn't hurt anyone.
I also have a Thunder Force IV cover on lockdown until I can figure out a few of the pitches that I'm missing but once I figure that out I can do work.

I hate noise

This was going to be the entire theme around my FTM (Finish That Map, not whatever Famitracker FTMs are) entry, but then robotics came in and murdered my free time and my motivation to do it.

I'm literally going to hold off on releasing another ZX cover until October 14th so hope you all have fun
