Title: SmashBro's Spriting Shenanigans
Post by: Hallan Parva on February 14, 2012, 01:51:38 AM
because alliteration is fun and makes you look clever

this is a thread where I put my spritewerk and such
you know, since all the other cool guys have threads
llama and kapus motivated me to take pride in my work

I can make sprites somewhat quickly, it takes on average about 45 minutes to an hour for a "beta frame"
from the beta frames I can do "mods" like appendage movement or recolours in like 10 minutes

the biggest problem I have is inspiration, if I don't want to do it then good luck forcing me to
sometimes I get motivation from the weirdest stuff so you might find updates out of nowhere
also sometimes I might do things not related to me and done for my friends instead

I just want to say that the Propeller Met reminds me of a Super Mushroom.

... Oh. That he does.

I never noticed that before.

I know why spriting novices make simple little sprite edits.

It's because they're SO GOSH DARN FUN TO DO.

New enemy type added, the Comett!

I also made the Finder's Ghost bigger so you can see it better.

Ow the pun

Your animating skills (the propeller met and the comett) look rather clean as well.

I actually have a little practice in motion frames due to preparation for Smash and Nido

though since you guys like my sprites better than my doodles maybe I'll just make a sprite comic instead

the next enemy isn't another Met and technically he's finished, it's just that his animation is a pain in the ass

I can see that thing fall from the sky diagonally and then acting as a normal met :D
Good work!
Title: Re: SmashBro's Enemy Gallery
Post by: Hallan Parva on February 14, 2012, 05:21:33 PM
Cometts fall faster than any other enemy, using this to their advantage by attempting to ram players. Unfortunately that's the ONLY thing they're good at, as they can't shoot and will only move downward. Still, you don't want to touch them due to the increased collision damage they can dish out.

New enemy type is up as well. Rotations are a bitch.

whoops DOUBLE POST

I had some time left after the Physics test so I did more spritewerk. This is getting too addicting for my own good. Anyway, I tried doing the Blue Ghost (the one with the tuft of hair on the head), but he just doesn't look right. I can't get that blasted hair done correctly. I'd like some suggestions as to what I can do to fix it and make it better, if you don't mind.

Geez, I'm churning sprites out almost as fast as kirbysonic does avatars.
Title: Re: SmashBro's Enemy Gallery
Post by: LlamaHombre on February 14, 2012, 07:09:26 PM
I think the tuft on Blue Ghost should be slightly larger.

Don't think this will be the hard one if you plan on including the blood ghosts, Smash.

I really like the U. F. Whoa, though.
Title: wow llama you are extremely supportive
Post by: Hallan Parva on February 14, 2012, 07:12:51 PM
Blood Ghost should be easier IMO because he has a mohawk. Just take the head and SPIKE SPIKE SPIKE you're done. :p

Oh, the puns get worse. There's a gold spaceship that shoots lasers instead of bullets... named the "U. F. Oh No"
Title: Totally cool suggestion broham
Post by: Magnet Dood on February 14, 2012, 09:16:17 PM
Hey, Smash, name the Propellor Met to the Propellomet

It sounds cooler and it's one word

So yeah
---
Nice work on the U.F. Whoa. Sounds funny and looks like a Topman from Super Mario Galaxy (which is fun).

I was using the name "Met-Peller" but that sounded awkward

also I tried harder on the Blue Ghost, DARE TO COMPARE

BEETLE JET.

(don't look at the horror avert your gaze)
(click to show/hide)
... I don't like it. I'm not very good at "original" designs.

Any suggestions on how to clean it up while still looking like a beetle?
Title: Re: SmashBro's Enemy Gallery

Which direction is it supposed to be facing?
Title: Re: SmashBro's Enemy Gallery
Post by: Hallan Parva on February 15, 2012, 08:52:01 PM
EXACTLY. I knew it was dicks.

Don't worry, I came here to upload the new version which I think is vastly improved.

BEETLE JET V2
(http://i544.photobucket.com/albums/hh355/smashbroplusb/BEETLEJETv2.png)

The only problem is now it doesn't look like a fighter ship.

If you told me which direction it was supposed to be facing, I would have told you my opinion. Now that I know that it's facing up, I prefer the old one.
Title: Re: SmashBro's Enemy Gallery
Post by: Hallan Parva on February 15, 2012, 11:11:50 PM
... Huh?

What things do you like about the first one? What needs to go?

also @Star, that's because they're enemies whereas BEETLE JET is meant to be a player character.

... I just realized how misleading the thread title is.
Title: ever heard of beetleborgs?
Post by: Korby on February 15, 2012, 11:15:17 PM
It looks more like a jet, and a cooler player character. It's also more complex.

The wings need to be over the yellow band more so they don't look they're cut off by it, and if those are legs, they need to be under the body.

Is that supposed to be a ship

Weird black/yellow stripe things need a purpose

Body seems to be underneath wings, so it should carry over to below the wings on the other side for consistency

Reminds me of a chao or a slime

Assuming it's a player, where does it shoot from? Also that green doesn't look too great with the cyan, but that's just my opinion.
Title: Re: SmashBro's Spriting Shenanigans
Post by: Hallan Parva on February 17, 2012, 12:43:08 PM
Yeah, the giant green capsule doesn't look that great either. Or were you talking about the stripes? I like the stripes.

Shots come from the point at the top UNLESS you're using Twin Freeze, in which case the icicles are launched from the upper sides of the plane (near where the curves are).
Title: Re: SmashBro's Spriting Shenanigans
Post by: Max on February 17, 2012, 01:25:09 PM
When you're spriting these things you need to think : what is the purpose of this object?

What is the purpose of that big green blob? If it's useless, replace it. If it's supposed to be something, make it look like the thing it's supposed to be!

I totally meant the stripes, but if you like them, keep 'em.

I would choose the thinner Basic Cannon, and I'd also change the missiles a bit, but I'm not sure how.

I think you should go with a black and bronze/golden colour scheme.
(Another thought is to have a colour scheme that looks like the bumper item(blue, white and gold))

but what are the things above the chips
navi chips?
Title: Re: SmashBro's Spriting Shenanigans
Post by: Hallan Parva on May 02, 2012, 05:18:16 PM
Yeah, they're dropped by Net Navis when they're fragged. Trying to sprite a tiny Navi was a lot harder than I thought, but I didn't want to be lazy and just have squares with stars on them like the games do. So, I put their emblems instead.

... Actually, I think I'm getting used to spriting tiny Net Navis after I did Barrier, so those might end up being HUD components (to show you which Navi class you're currently using).

SPEAKING OF TINY NET NAVIS
(http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/3015/barrier.png) (http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/5715/barrier100.png) (http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/2618/barrier100alt.png)
(http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/967/barrieralt.png) (http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/4085/barrieralt100.png)

The lower one is based off the BN1/BN2 sprite for Barrier while the upper one is modeled after BN3's design. I also couldn't decide which background I wanted for Barrier100, which is why there's a green and a red there. The original chip had purple like regular Barrier but I wanted players to be able to differentiate them easier. What's your opinion?

also Recov chip family woo

Colors are terrible and need way more contrast between each shade, and the grey blends into the browns too much.

Post by: Mr. X on July 01, 2012, 03:24:04 AM
Plus you've got like three different styles going there.  The hair has an outline that is simply a darker shade of its main color (brown in this case) as do the pants.  The shirt has the same outline as the hair which just doesn't make sense to me since it should be in front of the hair.  Then the face suddenly has solid black.

The first one is the sprite Korby oh so generously made JUST FOR ME. Oh, well I made the feet, but the rest was done completely by Korby. I can't thank you enough for the base, man.

The second one started off as just "me being silly with Nido's face" but eventually evolved into a few minor changes like adjusting the shoulders and making her overalls more... erm, form-fitting. The third one's basically my attempt at a front frame, using the second one as a base.

The fourth and fifth ones were taken from the second and third ones, but I didn't like how Nido had "Roll arms" so I changed her stance a bit. I also changed up her shirt, making the sleeves shorter and changing the area above the overalls to reveal her skin.

Also sweet mother of Mega Man, old me... that "sprite" of Nido is absolutely GIGANTIC! Gah!

The first one was taken straight from Mush's sheet. In the second one, I tried to sort of "merge" the sprites of Korby and Musashi together, by keeping the basic frame of Mush's while adding things Korby did with his sprite. Editing would have taken too long so I just re-drew this one myself. The third one is "me being silly with Nido's face" again, but I also rounded the head more and changed the hair slightly to make it seem longer.

Rotations using the new "base" sprite (shown on the far left). I'll probably have Nido put her arms by her sides when idle; the "attitude" pose on the far right was mainly just to see how it looked. Oh, and LONG HAIR WHEEEEEEE

What solarblast said.

You're focusing a tad too much on the natural curves, and in turn it looks both disproportional and out of place in the rotation.

How to fix it

The Plus Armor. Also known as "fuck what's your gimmick this time". Long story short, this is my new mechanized mount. Created for SmashBro by Dr. Daniel Oshiro, this modified piece of Ride Armor substitutes raw power for versatility. By removing the arms, extra power can be routed to other systems like the boosters and a force field generator.

The two forms of the Plus Armor, tentatively titled "Legs Gear" and "Rolling Gear", allow for different tactics in combat. The Legs Gear sports a high jump and is armed with a powerful set of twin plasma cannons. Using the air thrust boosters and the strong jumping force of the legs, this mode is about finding a strong vantage point to unload clips of pain into unaware enemies. Should you find yourself in the middle of a firefight instead, transform into the Rolling Gear. The high speed all-terrain treads allow the user to quickly maneuver around steady ground, and the head-mounted refraction buster returns fire at a fast pace. The boosters are now jet-propulsion engines, perfect for quickly dashing across a large area in a fairly short amount of time. While it does sacrifice raw force and power jumps of the Legs Gear, the speed and maneuverability of the Rolling Gear is especially useful for chasing down retreating foes or to make a retreat of your own.

So... does it look good? :ugeek:

I started with individual pieces of each mode (trust me, these are MANDATORY if I even hope to do the rotations), then assembled the three-quarters view of each mode using the parts. I also made the treads on Rolling Gear darker; I thought it looked nice. While the blue colours are pretty neat, I was curious as to how the suit would look with a more "fiery" paint job.

Which palette do you prefer? Any suggestions on other colours?

EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot to mention I'm not sitting in it. No, this is just the suit. I'll work on spriting my face some other time.

Title: Re: SmashBro's Spriting Shenanigans
Post by: Hallan Parva on December 06, 2012, 05:55:51 PM
The Resources subforum is defined as "sharing assets with others". In fact, besides having only one topic per user, the only other rule is "you can't post anything here that you don't intend to allow other people to use". I'm spriting the Plus Armor specifically for SmashBro's use as part of the new class, and as such it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense if I saw it in three other user skins. I'm fine if someone asks to use these sprites for something, but Resources is more of a "grab and go" sort of thing if you know what I mean.

Also, this is my topic for sprites and I haven't posted here in a good while. This is an excuse for doing so. :ugeek:

I'm assuming that by "damn, SmashBro" I did a good job on these?

Korby is a bad influence :ugeek:

In case you're wondering what the last two are, they're concepts for an amphibious-type mode for the Plus Armor. This new "Toad Gear" would stomp around like the Legs Gear would, albeit at a slow pace. With its softer landing pads, the Toad Gear also has a much shorter jump than when using the power-lock metal boots of the Legs Gear.

While these drawbacks might make it seem as if the Legs Gear is the superior choice, the real beauty of the Toad Gear is revealed while submerged underwater. In the ocean, the Toad Gear allows its operator to move at quicker speeds and to make large floating jumps, utilizing the booster's new propeller module. Attempting to execute a manual boost will create a whirlpool force at the feet of the landing pads, quickly grounding the Toad Gear and dealing damage to anyone caught underfoot. (I mean really, being suddenly pounced on by several tons of reinforced metal alloy has got to sting.)

The weapons of the Toad Gear are fired from an under-mounted bombing tray, which lowers and opens up to release its ordnance. Being a tool optimized for undersea combat and exploration, the assortment of weapons is suited for much the same purpose; many of the Toad Gear's attacks are modified from simple equipment one might bring to a snorkeling trip. As with the armor itself, these aquatic weapons can also be used on dry land, though with varying degrees of success.

Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

Go right ahead!

Quote from: "Korby"

That was sort of unintentional at first. Since you said you wanted "mounted machine guns" I tried to make, well, a hanging machine gun. That looked like crap though (and it sort of obscured most of the left leg) so I made a bombing tray instead. It was still mounted on the underside, and a lot of the Toad Gear weapons can be dropped or thrown from a tray such as that, so why not? When I tried positioning it though... yeah, I saw that I made it look like a mouth. Originally the tray was just going to light up and fire shots, but with the placement I thought it'd be pretty funny to have it open and close, sort of like a chomping motion.

Oh yeah, this is what Korby meant (http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/9200/fwoggy.png), by the way. It's his original pitch for the design.

So why LEGS Gear? Just call it Biped Gear or Ostrich Gear or Walker Gear
Title: Re: SmashBro's Spriting Shenanigans
Post by: Myroc on December 07, 2012, 11:01:30 AM
Why would one used a legged walker as a submersible vehicle? A legless pod-type craft would be much more mobile, being able to maneuver at will in three dimensions rather than having an inconvenient jumping mechanism.

There's a reason why the underwater armor from X3 is terrible, you know.

ANIMALS. I can dig it.

... Wait, what only moves on the ground and in a straight line? Snails are slow, snakes swerve... hmm...

With this "update" I actually thought of changing Legs Gear to Walker Gear simply because Toad Gear... you know, has legs, but following that logic Toad Gear can also walk and Rolling Gear is supposed to be the fast guy anyway.

I like Ostrich Gear a lot though.
Quote from: "Myroc"
There's a reason why the underwater armor from X3 is terrible, you know.
When designing the original two modes for the Plus Armor, Korby and Ukiyama brought up "Froggy" from Mega Man X3. I said that having a mode that was only useful on the four stages in the game that have water on them would be incredibly stupid, and Korby set out to prove me wrong, which is why the Toad Gear even has legs in the first place.

The concept of a legless pod form was thrown around a few times with CSCC devs. You would be able to freely move around underwater like YD Bubble Man's swimming, but on land you wouldn't be able to move without jumping as you lack legs or wheels. I really don't like such a degree of sharp specialization, and I wanted the Toad Gear to at least be semi-viable while above water.

In any realistic application you would be right; a legged vehicle would prove vastly inferior to an exploration pod. However, this is designed with game logic in mind, and the first rule of any game is "have fun". Being useless on land isn't really the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word "fun". So it has legs.

also Toad Gear can walk whereas the X3 guy was useless on laaaaand
Title: Re: SmashBro's Spriting Shenanigans
Post by: MusashiAA on December 07, 2012, 09:13:34 PM
Solution: make Toad Gear walk on land in a very stupid fashion. Imagine Bubbleman walking in real life with those flippers. There's your Toad Gear walking mechanic. Also, give him dive missiles and a huge jump height.

Ostrich Gear would have a normal walking cycle and machine guns/Plusma Buster (power), Toad Gear would have increased situational mobility and heat-seeking missiles (special), Dillo Gear would have the tank treads for mobility and a shield to protect itself while also capable of damaging others (defense).

Combine them all, and what do you have? A giant bipedal mecha with homing missiles, machine guns, a lazer gun and overall gret mobility for its size.
