Title: Game Maker Thread
Post by: Donutyoshi on February 16, 2012, 12:49:15 AM
It's basically a thread for the GM users like me. :D

Go discuss stuff on it, or even ask questions on how to do something.

I've started two projects in Game Maker.  The first was Nitro Rider.  It was basically meant for me to test out things in Game Maker.  You play as Nitro Man and have to jump and brake your way to the end of the game.  However, it has a few underlying problems that went on to make me give up.

1:  The controls are strange.  Sometimes the game lets you jump immediately after landing, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes walls kill you, sometimes they don't, etc.

2:  The stages were designed to challenge even me.  This creates an underlying problem:  When the guy who made the game and thus knows everything that's coming has problems beating it, that means most people will want to tear their hair out.  In fact, this was designed to be easy mode.  If you didn't hate disappearing blocks before, you will now.

3:  The enemies immediately spawn and start moving as soon as the level is generated.  This creates situations where if the player goes through the level at certain speeds, enemies may be completely blocking the way forward ensuring a stage reset.

This game did lead to one thing though:  I created Blade Man's stage for MM8BDM solely because I had already gotten the tiles for this game.

Next up was Primary, a shooter that demands concentration to get a high score.  In fact, it's almost a puzzle game.  I stopped working on this one due to lost interest.  I couldn't restart now if I wanted to:  I lost all of the files in a computer transfer (which is weird because I could have sworn I brought them over...)  I did get partway into the second world and created a shockwave powerup that was kind of cool.  Too bad it'll never been seen by anyone.

Yes, although you really wouldn't know it from playing it.

I've tried to use game maker, but I've never ever got further than putting in a few random sprites and a bit of worthless coding.

I really want to me able to make a game that I have in mind, where you play as me in an adventure to recover a stolen biscuit. 6 worlds plus a final 7th world (huge tower), where I can use hand combat and whatever weapons and items I find. I have a health bar with LOTS of heath, but if that goes to 0 it's game over (1-up mushrooms and hp food will be useful). Lots of great little boss battles and stuff like that. I could go on, but eh, I don't think I'll ever be able to make it actually happen. If I could get game maker to work then I might be able to....

Many many years ago I made a game called Pharaoh Man Soccer where you just bounce the ball on your head and see how high a score you could get. I just updated it to run on Windows 7 and fix a scoring bug, but otherwise it's still the same.

I remember when I was
10 or 11 I made my first GM game.

I created a crappy Pikachu platforming space game.

It had no animation, the sprites were big, and Pikachu between gaps would get stuck.

I made a game a long time ago where you fly a ship through cyberspace shooting red stationary virus thingies and avoiding green "walls", and later on pink viruses show up and fire at you. It had music from Metroid: Fusion playing. And it had one of the most seizure inducing game over screens inspired from an old DOS version of Missile Command. I don't know if I still have it.

I also made a snake clone with a level editor. I think I still have it somewhere.

When i was 16, i made a lot of crappy games made in Game Maker 7 in windows XP, like some mario fangames, megaman and more...
When i was 17, i registered a new account on yoyogames, then posted a lot of more a little crappy fangames, such as kirby, luigi games and others.
When i was 18, i made A Penguin's Adventure, but yesterday it was cancelled because my dA got hacked and i couldn't get requests.
This year i am making Murkekow Next, a fansequel to Murkekow's Adventure, a cancelled rockman 7 mod game, made in game maker. I need requests to 12 robot master sprites. For now not the moment of the requests, this is about me

Woah, I never knew this place existed. I'm a quite expierenced GM user (I barely code in GML however, just D&D), so I might be able to help some ppl with their games. I'm already working on a GM game myself BTW.

I don't understand why new people insist on necrobumping posts.

Maybe because there's nothing bolded in the rules about it? We really need to put a guideline on that.

Along with double posting. That octopus post in the CSCC was the most painful thing I've seen on this forum.
