Title: DataLyne: An RPG Maker debut by Turbo.
Post by: Turbodude on March 09, 2012, 11:47:34 AM
Ello, everyone. Lately I've been asking some people for tips on how to use RPG Maker, as some of you may know.
Now that I've found out what problems I was running into, Me and my friend rainwearspurple, who is another primary programmer for this, have made enough progress to show a proof of concept for
what I plan to be working on.

Introducing:
DATA-LYNE (http://youtu.be/8FBMKlAZsnE) (whoever get's the reference in the name gets a thumbs up)

Before you read on, click the link above to see what kind of progress I've made.

Now, the game was originally supposed to be an exaggerated re-telling of some of the internet drama I've seen over the
course of my years. Though as more people began to talk to me about it, I decided to rewrite the story to become something different, while still keeping things in a realm similar to the Internet we know, where everything and anything can happen.

As for development, coding-wise things are going at a moderate pace. The visuals however, are still relying on a lot of stock sprites (the virus that Sam fights in the video, for example), so we're looking for all the help we can get when it comes to graphics. Come to think of it, any form of help would be appreciated, as well as criticism and ideas.

Ooh RPG Maker. (Oh no, now everyone is going to remember I'm supposed to make a game.)
It looks interesting so far, I don't know if I can really help with much though. Not much of an artist (And by not much, I mean I'm not an artist) Though I might be able to critique some stuff, but so far it looks good. The maps are detailed and don't make my eyes bleed, and it doesn't look linear as all hell (Which is the first thing I look for after my littlest brother tried making a game in RPG Maker)

Anyhow, good luck with everything else.

Let's see...

Soundtrack's definitely good. I detect a slight Final Fantasy bias, though
Minor grammatical errors that never cease to irritate me (e.g. "it's power" instead of "its power")
Colorful, although somewhat bland environment (put more than just grass there!)
I especially liked the character portraits (I can easily imagine you looking like the in-game Sam)
A good plot (better than anything I could come up with :P)

Overall, I'd say to keep working! This game has so much potential to me and I'd hate to see it go unfinished (I'm going to actually play this if this ever is finished in case you haven't noticed).

Spinalware is too weak.
Intro fights are supposed to be easy, but he could stand to be a bit tougher than that.

I would also advise sending a draft of the completed script to a third party for review.
The difference between dramatic and melodramatic is difficult to put into perspective alone.

Otherwise, it looks great.
I might even play it after you're done.

Oh, don't worry. I plan to detail things a lot more, I didn't put much into the map with Spinalware as I was busy testing the cutscene script.

Yeah, I noticed that too. And knowing that the game is going to be in a modern setting, I will definitely try to broaden things musically.

Thanks for letting me know, I've been trying to find the middle ground between too easy and too hard.
A previous demo I had (with a crappier intro sequence) had a fight with some random Gargoyle, and
most matches would leave the player with 50-90 or so health, and POISONED after the match.

Overall, thanks for the constructive criticism you guys. I'll keep this all in mind, and hopefully keep
things updated later on.

wowzer bowser it's AR PEE GEE MAY KURRR ECKS PEE

not a bad start for a beginner (and I do mean BEGINNER :ugeek: some maps are depressingly empty)

I also recommend varying your geometry more if you know what I mean

basically make paths with breaks in them, add things that aren't perfectly rectangular, etc

Actually, it's VX. But close enough.
I am trying to work on better geometry, but I can't seem to find more fitting graphics in the area I have at the moment (that being a small town) aside from trees and houses. I'll try to look harder for things that'll make the maps seem less dull.

One thing to say about this:

I love how this is turning out, but I can't really critique on anything people haven't already talked about.  Definitely looks promising though.  Keep up the good work, Turbo!  I'm willing to help maybe if I can somehow

here are some screenies from my game Unspoken Melody
I put them here because I like showing off they can give you some pointers
look at ways you can vary your stage geometry to create interesting areas
