Title: CutTunes - Released!
Post by: Mr. X on April 17, 2012, 09:45:40 PM
Quote
I could always make a music pack with it and random other songs I've (and maybe others? That sounds like a good idea. Note to self: talk to llama and thatguy about this) made.

And suddenly, this topic is made!  I've decided to put together a music pack featuring songs by our very own Cutstuff members!   I shall call it...THE CUTSTUFF CUSTOM MUSIC pack, otherwise known as the CSC-DAMN IT!

...On second thought, let's allow covers too and call it "CutTunes!"

So, of course, in order for this music pack to be made, we need songs.  Just submit any 8-BIT songs/covers that you've made (you can submit as many as you want although I highly recommend picking your best) in this thread or if you choose, by PM if you want to keep your involvement a surprise.  Note that I reserve the right to reject any song although I'll be rather lenient.  As of right now, there is currently no set limit on the number of songs being put into this pack, although I'll eventually cut off submissions once I feel we have enough for a pack.  If you miss this cutoff and there's enough interest, I might put together other "volumes" of CutTunes.

For submissions, here are the requirements:
1) The song MUST be made by you!!!
2) Your song MUST be 8-bit.  Expansion chips are fine, just don't give me GXSCC crap or non-chiptuned stuff.
3) Please give the name of your song/the song you are covering when submitting.
4) Your song MUST be able to be looped.  Non-looping songs just sound awkward when you try to loop them.
5) If you are doing a cover of a song, please provide a link to the original version of the song.  Nobody wants to listen to a cover if they can't even tell what the originals sound like

Here are a few suggestions.  These are not required, but are highly encouraged:
1) I recommend putting your song on YouTube so it can easily be heard without downloading.
2) You do NOT have to create the looped version when submitting, although it will speed up the process if you do.
3) Ask your peers for their honest thoughts on your music.  If I say no to a song and have an out-pouring of people saying "But I really like that song", I will definitely think about reconsidering.  Also, if they point out valid problems with your cover, it doesn't hurt to make a good song even better!

BTW, I've been reminded of something. A word to the wise about looping: If you're using famitracker and are exporting the song as a .wav file, select "play song twice" and manually edit the loop in audacity. Famitracker generally cuts off the song a split second early which will make any attempts to loop using the "Play song once" option sound awful. By extension, if you're sending me the wav so I can loop it, pick "play song twice".

I am submitting your "Sky Deck A Go Go" song as well as the song heard in Alpha Sector. :p

... In all seriousness, I wish you the best of luck with this project.

Alpha Sector was getting in as well as the City Escape I did yesterday.  I just figured I'd throw my own in at the end.   The number of my own I'd use depends on if I get enough entries.

When it comes to editing things into loops, should I just take a song I want to loop in Audacity then send you the looped wav file?

Well, I made this, and I wonder if it's good enough. I have a fair amount of covers, as it is. I'm not sure I did the best possible, but I feel fairly limited, due to the limited tools I was using (A soundfont).

Something sounds off about that soundfont:  it sounds like everything has an unnatural echo.  Plus, the percussion is really really loud and there's one part where the notes seem off.  I'm going to have to say no on this one, sorry.

I have songs I put in Fyone's map pack. I'll think of names, put em' on youtube and put them out there and stuff. I'll be sure to make more as well.

I've heard the ones in the map pack, and to be frank, I wouldn't accept any of them until you've improved them greatly.

I'm gonna suggest this for track naming:

MRX01, MRX02, MRX03, and so on.

LLAMA01, LLAMA02, LLAMA03, and so on.

A shortened name for the author of the track, followed by a number. First timers always have a 01 by default, regardless of them having other tracks or not. Like, if I were to upload just one song, it would be called MUSH01, even if there isn't or won't be a MUSH02.

So I haven't looped these yet, cause I'm having a little bit of trouble (Mostly cause I'm like 2 milliseconds off, and it's driving me nuts.) But here are two songs I'm interested in submitting to this if you don't mind.

I'll try to loop them tomorrow if you accept them.

Sure I'll join this. I looped two of them before this, so I'll send those later. I'll be sending Submerged Memory, Water City, and possibly Egg Engines. If you need me to post vids, just tell me and I'll do so.

Personally I vote for Musashi's naming method. It's clean and efficient.

Also FiniteZero is a total badass composer.

I like this method, but there's one problem which is the same problem with including any author information in the music code:  there will likely be people who download this and don't know who made what song no matter how many read-mes and credits I attach to it.  I fear I'll be inundated with people complaining about confusing codes.  It's the same reason I dropped the acronym level codes in the original X Pack and went for the generic XDM01-10.

As for finitezero, I think that site might be having problems.  I can't listen to the songs on the site and downloading them just gives me a blank file.  It was working yesterday just fine with Crisis City so I don't know.

Sure, just send me either the ftms or the wav (make sure when exporting from famitracker to hit "play song:  2 times" and then edit the loop as famitracker cuts off the end of the song making looping with playing the song once impossible).

Hmm, I'm not sure about that Corneria.  It feels...empty.  I mean, I know it's hard to work with only 4 channels but I feel like you could have done so much more.  What does everybody else think?  I'm not pulling the trigger immediately either way.

Final Destination, however, is approved.

EDIT:  Change of heart, Corneria is also in.  Well, approved I should say since you still have to send me the files.

Also, to FiniteZero:  I found this on the tindeck forums from a few days ago and I believe this solves our issue

SUPER EDIT:  Any more submissions?  I'm still waiting for FiniteZero to reupload his last few submissions.  We've got an ok number of songs but more would be nice.

@Knux:  This is a pack for music created by Cutstuff users.  NewAgeRetroGamer is not a Cutstuff member.

@Amb:  For the record, what I mean by the "part" is one of the square channels during the first section.  In the original song, I hear constant moving notes.  In your version I hear a bit of blip blip blip blip *pause* blip blip blip blip *pause* which I don't really hear in the original.  Just giving you a bit of direction if you were to redo it~

Oh yeah, that's because of a really silly way I cheated to get some chords in that made it sound weird.

Do I have to find a way to show people the tracks I'm going to add, and post them in here? 'cause it's a bunch. Like, 8 tracks or so.

edit: Also, do songs have to be an specific format? Like wav or ogg?

EDIT2: Actually, I'm gonna send them as ogg, since it's far more lightweight than wavs. Seriously, a 7 meg wav into a 1 meg ogg? DO IT

FiniteZero:  For the first song, do you know how many square channels you have in the song?  I know you said earlier you use FL Studio and a soundfont (or at least, I think you said that) and while that's fine, I just want to make sure that something like that could be replicated by an actual expansion chip or else I won't accept.

For the second one, did you add the reverb or is it created in some other way?  It doesn't sound 8-bit at all with that echoy effect.

FTX, you really don't have to jump onto every single bump made, regardless of whatever was actually in the post. So long as the bump is relevant to the topic at hand, bumping a topic is fine.

To answer afsonic's question, the only program I know that helps to create authentic NES styled music is Famitracker. I personally use it all the time to create covers of stuff, though it does have a steep learning curve and it requires manual labor and practice.

You can find it at http://www.famitracker.com, and I'd recommend listening to some of danooct's tutorials beforehand so that you're not entirely stumped.

While this topic is alive, would anybody be interested in a sequel to this? I've created a considerable number of covers since this was released, and I'm sure others like ThatGuy74 could potentially be interested in placing some tracks of their own in.

Seconded. I've been doing quite a lot boredom-induced VRC6 covers myself, and I've been considering releasing them in a pack for some time now. If there's not enough interest, then whatever, but I'm sure someone would love to pick this up as their own project if Mr. X doesn't want to continue.

I'd love to try my hand at something new. I've never made 8-bit music, but I know enough about the structure of music that I could probably take existing tracks and transfer them into 8-bit. I'm not sure what I'd specifically convert, but I'm sure I can do something.

Since Metallix didn't take initiative, I guess I'll try to start up CutTunes 2 sometime in the near future. Maybe I'll put up a famitracker tutorial alongside so more people could try their hands at this.

Until then uh poof
