Title: Cutstuff 2012 Duel Tournament of Champions: FINISHED
Post by: King Dumb on June 28, 2012, 04:17:47 AM
NEWS: We have a new 2-Man DM to Duel transformation wad. This removes Time Stopper, Eddie, E-Tanks, M-Tanks, Super Adapter, Time Slow, Treble Sentry, Exit Unit, and Proto Upgrade from the game. All contestants and hosts must have this wad.

PU Version: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/11603985/2ManDMItemRemoval-PUVersion.pk3
Non-PU Version: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/11603985/2ManDMItemRemoval.pk3

Many thanks to BlueBrawl for all his help and for uploading the above file!

It's time to pump some life into this community. And here's how we're going to do it.

Cutstuff 2012 Duel Tournament of Champions

STAGE TWO: INTENTS ELIMINATION STAGE

Elimination: http://challonge.com/dueltourneyofchampselimination (http://challonge.com/dueltourneyofchampselimination)

Get fraggin'! Hosts, now is the time. Host those servers!

That's right. A classic duel tournament. No teams. No gimmicks. No complications. Just good old fashioned fragging to determine the top dog.

General Rules:
(click to show/hide)

This tournament will flow very similarly to Rtists's Summer Classical Duel Tournament, for those of you who participated in and/or followed that tournament. There will be two stages. The first stage will be the seeding stage and, if necessary, the preliminary elimination stage. Depending on the number of applicants, the first stage will either consist of universal seeding or grouped elimination. In other words, the first stage will be one of the following.

(click to show/hide)

The second stage consists of one or more classic brackets. If (a) was the first stage, then at least two brackets will be created. One will be composed of the top one or two contestants of each group, the other of the 2nd place or 3rd and 4th place contestants of each group, determined by win-loss ratio, kill-death ratio, and/or a tiebreaker duel, in that order. If there is interest, a bracket(s) can be made for the lower ranking members of each group. These brackets will be subsequently be seeded.

If (b) was the first stage, this serves as the seeding and one bracket will be made. After the first round of this second stage, a second bracket will be made for the losers of the first round.

Rules for the second stage:

10 frags is a little much for some maps, though. I know how long these things can get.

Also, Needle Man should be banned due to Wind Hold bind bullshit.

Regardless, here's to a fun tourney!

I'll consider making the fraglimit open to change by mutual agreement. As for Needle Man, it has been added to the maps only allowed upon mutual agreement.

Personally, I think MM5WAV should be open to mutual agreement. It's not as prone to stalling as some would believe, and any "broken combos" have perfectly viable counters- either cut a staller off with top spin, or get on a wave bike to avoid rush jetters or magnet missile users.

That, and jousting takes skill.

Seriously, why is Spring Man banned and Burst Man is just fine? Burst Man, in my opinion, is basically a remixed version of Spring Man. Pain-in-the-ass water and bouncy-bouncy bubbles combined with pits that only have two exits to jump out from? Not fun.

plus you know Proto Buster and Tomahacks so

Proto isn't even in duel, but I still think Burst should be agreed upon only. Also, magnets on a huge open stage.

hey

suggestion

you know how you have that MANLY DOOL ITEM REPLACE wad right

well how's about this

you replace Tomahacks with a slightly nerfed version

that doesn't 3HKO rapefest

Code: [Select]
SilverBromahawk : SilverTomahawk replaces SilverTomahawk
{
damage (33)
}
EDIT: while I'm thinking about it

how's about a Banned/Mutual listing for IX and PU
Title: Re: Cutstuff 2012 Duel Tournament of Champions
Post by: King Dumb on July 02, 2012, 03:34:09 PM
Not too sure about the Tomahawk thing. I don't really want to start nerfing and buffing things just for the sake of one tournament.

All non-vanilla maps are mutual agreement, and, because I don't really think I'm that familiar with the layout/weapon sets of enough of them, none of them are banned, though I reserve the right to throw out any duels played on custom maps if I deem said maps unsuitable for a proper duel (this probably won't happen.)

Me and Woohoo drop out for obvious reasons. Not because we are afraid to face each other but because of bias match ups. I don't want to start an argument so just drop us out ok.

10-9 victory for Knux on Flash Man (my pick)
10-6 victory for me on Junk Man (Knux's pick)

Close calls, Napalm Bombs, Item 1 platforming and generally cool stunts were present throughout the entirety of these two duels. Good job Knux, those were some hectic (and long; the first game went for 27 minutes, cripes) games.

The sooner we get done with the group stage, the sooner we can begin elimination. Round 1: MM4SKU, Skull Man, Awbawlisk's pick, Awbawlisk wins 10-4

Round 2: MM5STO, Stone Man, my pick, Awbawlisk wins 10-3

Probably the most exciting duels I've ever done. Had fun, GGs.

Played -Ran, and am done with my matches.

(Sean) MM1FIR. Sean: 0, Ran: 10.

Yeah, zero to ten.
Yep, yep, yep...

(Ran) MM3TOP. Sean: 7, Ran: 10.

A lot more entertaining.

A former shining star in the duel ring has grown quite dim, but at least I had fun.
Good games from all three of my opponents.

This time in Shade Guy vs. Everyone...The rough tough Australian takes on the Destroyer of Humans...Who just happened to be available in all the times I wasn't. Seriously, I was lucky to catch him. Although I don't blame him too much since I'm Australian and all.

Anyway! The matches.
10 - 1 Victory for me on Freeze Man (my pick)
10 - 3 Victory for me on Yamato Man (HD's pick)

Looking at my results, this gives me a grand total of 48 frags, out of a possible 60. I was also fragged 40 times overall. I don't know if these statistics mean anything, but have them anyway.

Predicting what our division looks like because yes:

1st - Sora the Explorer
2nd - Shady Australian
3rd - Knucks
4th - Me

Not quite sure about frags on 2nd and 3rd, these are my guesses though.

Title: Re: Cutstuff 2012 Duel Tournament of Champions: GROUP STAGE

Talking during duel matches is generally frowned upon.

I don't know if it's not allowed, per se, but it can be very distracting for both players involved.

I believe it's possible to mute the chat, actually. This would be handy for both commentators and duelists to prevent blatant distractions from disrupting gameplay.

Oh snap. I honestly must say I was a bit concerned HD vs. Shade would never happen. Good work both of you in working it out. Work.

Hilman, you're always allowed to watch the duels! These group matches were a bit of fun, but the bracket matches will be a bit more serious. Talking probably won't be happening unless it's pertinent.

Also, because this apparently hasn't been made clear, there are two brackets for the second stage. One bracket will be the standard Elimination Bracket, and will consist of the top two contestants from each group. The first round of this bracket will consist of number one players pitted against number two players. Obviously you won't be facing a groupmate the first round, though.

The second bracket will consist of the third and fourth places of each group, and will be structured very similarly, with third places fighting fourth places for the first round.

Also, only two groups have yet to finish their matches!

Due to personal reasons, the deadline for the completion of the group stage has been extended to Thursday, July 19th. But keep the matches coming! We will start as soon as we can, as long as I can find the time. However, the second stage will begin after the deadline. Okay, so I don’t have the bracket graphics, but you’re all clamoring, so here you go. Rules are on the first post. Always have been.

PLEASE NOTE: For the second stage of the competition, duels will be a bit more serious. I ask that talking in servers whilst ranked duels are occurring be limited to strict necessity. Additionally, only two time outs will be allowed to each contestant for every game, with the exception of lag spikes, should they be merely isolated. Also note, that from hence forth, frags scored on players talking outside of a called time-out will count. Don’t talk during your duels, for goodness sake. Frags scored on players about to call a time-out will not count.

Remember, map picks reset for stage two, but once again you may only pick a map once; all matches are best two out of three. Contestants each pick a map, the third is agreed upon mutually.

Unfortunately, we only managed to get through one of our games. But on the bright side, this leaves us on a dramatic cliffhanger.

Will Shade be beaten in a shameful 2 - 0 defeat and be knocked out?
Will Shade be able to hold his opponent off for one more round, being defeated in a more respectable 2 - 1 loss?
Will Shade be able to come back and win two games to remain in the running for the grand prize?
What exactly is the grand prize?
Is this the last we'll see of our wonder from down under?

Tune in next time and find out, folks.

The whole top half is done (except for one round) and Tgot and I are the only ones done in our half. I formally demand deadlines in an orderly and respectful fashion  :ugeek:

BB's pick: NEX01 (BB 6-10 OB)
OB's pick: MM5NAP (BB 10-0 OB)
Mutual pick: MM4DC1 (BB 8-10 OB)

OJ demands it so:

Round One Deadline: August 7th at 12:00 AM EST. This is all current matches but Orange Juice vs. ThatGuyOverThere on the bottom half!
Round Two Deadline: August 10th at 12:00 AM EST. All quarterfinal matches should be done by this date!
I'd like for the Elimination Bracket to be completed by August 15th because that's when school starts!

Unless I'm notified well in advance (like today or tomorrow for Round One) of any prior conflicts, these deadlines will stand.

Consolation Bracket, reminder PMs will be sent today. Once I see activity start up again (which it will), I'll set your deadlines.

Sean: So, you're dropping out or what? (July 26th)

Swissy: sure why not (July 28th)

I fell like I need to settle the score at the the Consolation.

If I can't make it in time, I'll may be need to drop out or something.

That reminds me, what happens if one drops out in the middle of a round?

Okay, so college begins for me this week. I don't know if I'll miss something. If anything, could I have my next Duel on Saturday if it's available then? There's naught I can do about staying far, far away on a place without any computers I can use to play AND studying at the same time, so please consider this.

Welp, later guys. :ugeek:

Bikdark chose MM2MET and won 6-10.

I chose MM6YAM (BIG SURPRISE THERE) and won 10-7.

We agreed upon MM7SHA and I won 10-6.

Good matches, Bik.

Well, I think a valid explanation is due. At the moment we were having our duel, I had some things going through my mind about how tough times I'm going through. That's the reason I told you "not now" when I was in the classes server. It came to the point where I lost all motivation to do anything, and decided to quit. I had fun on this tourney, and by no means it was a rage quit. So, yeah. Sorry if I made you guys feel bad.

Jman, I hope we can  have a duel (out of the tourney, of course) sometime when I'm feeling better. Thanks for being patient.

Vs. Sean
(MM3SPA - My Pick) Lost 7-10
(MM4PHA - Sean's Pick) Won 10-3
(MM7SHA - Agreement) Won 10-6

Vs. Bik
(MM6FLA - Bik's Pick) Lost 3-10
(MM2WOO - My Pick) Lost 5-10

At least bronze is still a pretty cool trophy color.

And so the Cutstuff 2012 Duel Tournament of Champions has come to a smashing conclusion.

Over the course of this tournament, we have witnessed defining moments for the competitive scene.

Duel veterans returned for another shot at that glorified title... Legends rose and legends faltered in a roller coaster of the tensest duels this game has scene in ages... Frags were scored, duels won and lost, and in the end two hopefuls - one who sought to prove his mettle to the community and earn his due admiration, and one who sought to nab that ultimate title that had just slipped from his grasp many months before - rose above their competition.

Congratulations again to Jman, winner of the Consolation Bracket!

Congratulations to Orange Juice, winner of the Top 16 Elimination Bracket and the Duel Champion!

A huge thanks to all participants and to our server hosts (huge thanks to a select few of you; you know who you are!) for making this tournament a success!
