Title: Sonic Robo Blast 2
Post by: Outragous on August 18, 2012, 11:48:02 AM
Hey there! I was wondering if anyone here at CutStuff knew about the Sonic fan game, called Sonic Robo Blast 2 (SRB2). It is also a game that uses Doom 2 as the base game. It uses .wads, .socs, Doom Builder, and most other Doom-editing related paraphernalia. My friend, Larztard T. Hedgehog, is from over there and I wanted to see if any other SRB2 fans lie here at CutStuff as well!

I used to play it quite a bit offline, but I don't think I ever worked up enough courage to ever do it with other people.

Zim's house for best map~

I intend on playing it online someday, but for now I've only ever played it offline during my journey to Maine.

My favorite character to play as is Knuckles.

I've been playing this game since the first demo.

I would play it all the time with my brothers, whether we'd be playing through the game normally, fooling around with weird exploits/glitches, or downloading bizarre mods off the forums, we always had fun. I played it online for a time, but I almost always had a lot of lag and the community was kind of annoying, so I kinda stopped. I still play it offline a lot with my brothers.

This. I used to play this game ALL the time back in 2006-2008ish times under the name Super Flip.
I was never that experienced in it, and the controls were always a bit slippy in my opinion, but I still had a whole lot of fun with it.

I sometimes come back to it, just to stroll down possibly the first real internet community I started visiting.

The game is okay. But I prefer MM8BDM as it seems a tad more hardcore and doesn't have these wonky-ass controls. I am going to introduce my friend to this game at some point. He is pretty experienced with Doom Builder, and making wads and all that. Maybe we can get another dev in this community. ;P

I've always been intending on making a Heavy or Bomb character because they're awesome.
As for the game, it's fun, but I think it'd be better with friends.

Yeah there are quite a few people who still play SRB2. All you gotta do is get the latest update and a few wads then join a server. But most of the time it's just ctf matches that get boring quickly.

This pretty much sums up what I had to say.
Though I play online more than any of us bro's, but I still find the community to be "meh" at the greatest. It'd be really nice if I actually had some friends to play with on there.

Though unlike 8BDM, I'm content in just playing it alone. :geek:

The community over there is a little weird. Especially this one guy named Mystic. He is a jerk. But my friend from over there isn't so bad. Ofc I only know about SRB2 from him because he showed me in IRL. :P Him and I have been kinda working on a project for SRB2. I didn't know anything about dev with the Doom engines so I couldn't help very much, but since I'm hear at CutStuff I should hopefully start learning more about wad and map dev.

I mean, I respect the guys there and all for their awesome mods, but would it kill them to be a little less hostile?

But I digress. I'd been trying to get around more in the netgames, but I haven't really found any that caught my eye.  :|

I wouldn't necessarily call Mystic a jerk, he was just a bit strict in keeping order and maturity in the forums.
After talking to him and others on the IRC every once and a while, I found out that he's personally a pretty chill guy.

I'm probably gonna reinstall SRB2 this very minute and see if there's anything good for netgames myself, hopefully I won't run into servers that try to download WADs that stop halfway.

To be completely honest, I only got this game because Coldy said there was a Mario Kart mod. (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/JustHereForGodzilla)

I downloaded it, I played it, and I later joined a server hosted by Lego. It's great fun, really.

... Oh wait, this game has a story mode? Fine, fine, I guess I can go play that too. :ugeek:

To be honest, I think the game does a good job with its campaign stages. There are usually plenty of multiple paths, each stage has its own unique gimmicks, and the boss fights are tough but fair. It honestly feels like I'm playing classic Sonic in 3D. The only stage I don't like so far is the stupid underwater temple level. The first room with the floating platforms and the precise spring jumps? I had to do that crap five times over. Don't even get me STARTED with the part where you have to push the statues, either. This is a Sonic game and a Sonic game is supposed to be fast. I don't want to have to mash WASD to stick a landing on a tiny 3D Floor or waste my time kicking around stone gargoyles. I want to be running around at high speed and flying/climbing over things to skip half the level, darn it!

I've yet to play "vanilla" on a server (actually, I've only played kart racing online), so I can't imagine how game modes like Deathmatch are to work in the SRB2 world, really.

Once my friend gets his PC back I will start playing SRB2 a little more. Atm I don't ever play it.

I've always thought about trying it, but after watching videos, I just don't think it would be all that fun.  To me, it doesn't even remotely resemble playing a Sonic game.  I want loops and hills and crazy stuff like Sonic's always had!  This seems more like a platformer in fast motion than a Sonic game.
Title: Re: Sonic Robo Blast 2
Post by: Balrog on August 19, 2012, 05:10:48 PM
"Loops and hills and crazy stuff" is not only next-to-impossible in Doom Legacy, but also becomes just a speed bump in anything that's not a 2D plane like in the Genesis games or braindead linear like the Modern games.
Title: Re: Sonic Robo Blast 2
Post by: Mr. X on August 19, 2012, 05:13:06 PM
Exactly:  as long as it's a Doom mod, it'll never be Sonic to me.

And the Modern games aren't all braindead linear:  Play Sonic Generations.  It has just as many paths as the classic games (except CD, but that whole game is just a mess of (crappy) paths)

Yeah, the gameplay itself isn't very Sonic-y.

But, for me, that never stopped it from being tons of fun.

My question is who at Sonic Team Jr. liked Labyrinth Zone enough to the point to make a bigger one.

Do getting the Chaos Emeralds for Knuckles get you anything?

You get some unlockables, but you don't get Super Knux or anything; only Sonic gets a Super mode in Single Player.

Would you believe he banned me from the forums for 3 days because I said "Menssages"?

So yeah, the community is horrible, but the game is actually pretty darn good, and I remember seeing a slopes mod somewhere iirc.

EDIT: Here it is. (http://mb.srb2.org/showthread.php?t=35949)

Well, there went my motivation to collect the Emeralds. It would've been funny to see Super Tails, and the aforementioned Labyrinth Zone is too much of a ballsore to play with my inferior Sonic skills.

Lol that's Mystic for you. 3 day ban for mispelling a word. They should've picked a different engine for SRB2 because, yes, it is damn near impossible to get loops and hills in Doom. It would be better if they had coded their own engine, or used a different engine.

Yeah, that's the sole reason why I only visit the forums to download mods these days. I don't even bother to log in.

Oh yeah, believe me, I tried to make a loop for a Green Hill Zone (Generations) themed Race map and well...the results sucked.

As far as I know, the adventure 2 mod was outdated and unfinished. Unless someone decided to revive the project, I doubt you could even play it on the current version of SRB2.

I played it for a time, but I just stopped altogether. I now only play games with friends, and it is usually Tag/Hide and Seek, or occasional CTF. There was a person or two in the community I enjoyed playing with, though.

I was always Tails, though sometimes I used Knuckles. The fact I mained Tails is why I never did much of Race at all.
Title: Re: Sonic Robo Blast 2

Race is always full of Sonic's, and because of that there's really no chance for you to win against a server full of good people as anyone else.

Though I DID get close in one race as Knuckles. I got in about 3rd or 4th. (..which probably isn't saying much since a few of the people behind me gave up.)

SRB2 v2.1 was released on the 15th and I completely missed it. It feels like a much more complete game now.
Subsequent patches have also been released, so be sure to download that as well.

• New character: Sonic & Tails, features two-player support
• Stage revamps, most notably Techno Hill and Castle Eggman, Deep Sea is no longer unbearable
• Emblems: eight unique emblems in each act: five peppered throughout the stage, three for time, score and rings
• New special stages based on NiGHTS
• Loads of new multiplayer stages
• Several aesthetic changes, including various Knuckles changes and unique shield sprites
• Tons of bugfixes

Have fun (https://www.srb2.org/download/)

I played it on release day with friends, then promptly proceeded to beat singleplayer mode. It was a blast.

I don't get the rankings on NiGHTS mode, though. It's like no matter how well you do, you always get an E or an F. What determines the score anyway?
