Title: Obscure games that only YOU have played.
Post by: Turbodude on October 31, 2012, 02:34:04 PM
Have that game you've played that nobody or hardly anybody you know, knows what the heck it is?
I'm sure you have at least one or two.

I'll start with this one:

My first PC game, have so many fond memories of just me and my really outdated comp playing a very crappy port of this with low-quality music in the dark.

I am quite found of this game. I actually spent an entire night beating it, I'd play it any day.

(click to show/hide)

This is a game I recently acquired, and I have to say I'm not in the least bit disappointed with it

And finally, this game. I actually have yet to find a copy of this game to buy, I'm having trouble with it.  Although a buddy of mine has it, and it's damn good. (On top of that, I like the Anime so that helps.)

While fairly obscure, I'd say that Ouendan! and its sequel are fairly well known by anyone who actually bought Elite Beat Agents (Which includes me).
Both of them were fantastic, by the way.  It experimented with the DS' unique touch-pad, and cranked out a very addictive, very fun rhythm game.

Obscurities?  I've had a few.  Most result from simply being games that were bad or not aimed at me--MySims, Speed, and Swords come to mind.  But up there on my shelf, there's simply one game that takes the cake:

- Future Cop: LAPD (PS1)
- Mischief Makers (N64)
- Forsaken (N64)
- The Getaway (GB)
- Flashback (SNES)
- Cybernator (SNES)
- True Lies (SNES)

why is it that NO ONE has heard of this game. Its a marvelous masterpiece of a game that deserves as big as a fanbase as atleast Megaman. If this series gets to that caliber then i think it could be Capcom's main mascot since Megaman is pretty much dead.

If you go on vgchartz.com, you'd find that each version of the game (PS2, Wii) has sold more than the average Mega Man game.  If you add the PS2 and Wii versions together, it's sold more copies than any Mega Man game except Mega Man 2.  Both pale in comparison to the sales of Resident Evil, Street Fighter, and Monster Hunter which goes to show sales mean jack squat to being the company's mascot.

ANYHOO, back on track, here's one that's not too widely known.

BUT most people hate it because they've played the Game Boy/DOS version (which sucks).

The most fun vertical shooter ever.
You get bombs handed out like candy, the weapon system is cleverly made, you can change the speed of your plane any time (between a little slow and superfast) and the music is just awesome. Too bad that nobody knows it because it came out on a very unsuccessful console (except for Japan where it sold quite well).

When I was little (and I mean 4-5 years old), I was learning how to type from a floating Mario head (you know what I'm talking about if you've played it). The game was mario teaches typing 2: and I was way too slow. This does count, right?

Meritous (http://asceai.net/meritous/) and Eternal Eclipse Taoyarin (http://www.asceai.net/taoyarin/), both by the same person.
meritous is a bit strange. It is basically a randomly generated Zelda1-ish game with lots of more action and you can only use charged area-of-effect attacks. Tons of fun to be had, and it runs on Windows (precompiled), Linux (just run make) and most other platforms that have a C-compiler.
taoyarin is one of the most fascinatingly weird games I have ever played. But it is very very hard.

Well, double post and bump but whatever.
See this as my take on how to review bad games.
I kind of want to show you the greatest example of SoBadItsGood (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SoBadItsGood) on the SNES.
(click to show/hide)
So, this is Super Strike Gunner / Strike Gunner S.T.G. by Athena (Japanese game company, most famous for a series of game creation software), published by Activision (You know them).
I will just give you a quick translation of some things that are written on the background of the German version (the one I have) (only the box and manual are in German, not the actual game):
(lines that begin with # are sarcastic comments by me.)
- Based on the famous Arcade game this shoot-em-up has 4 different difficulty levels
# Question: Did anybody here ever even play the arcade version of Strike Gunner?
- Play 8 different stages that all have a different beautiful background each.
# Well ... I certainly hope so. An SNES game should not have 8 stages on the same background, right? (But is it really a unique feature? And don't most 16-bit shooters have multiple per stage?)
- You can choose from 15 different special weapons (choose carefully because some are more useful in specific stages).
- 10 different pieces of music and great sound effects (sound effects can be activated in the option menu)
# You need to activate them separately? That's weird (you do not, actually.)
- Unique 2-player mode where you can combine your planes.

All in all ... sounds not too confidence-inducing.
Well, the game sucks. The graphics are kind of okay-ish but dull (90% grey) and everything looks the same (but hey, different backgrounds! A dull forest, a dull desert, a generic starry night sky, an ocean and more!)
The weapons are mostly boring. The in-game music is the same guitar riff repeated every 10 seconds, more or less. Well, or a different one in the next stage.
It takes half a minute for the cursor to appear on the title screen (remember, SNES. Loading times = very very bad programming).
But hey, the intro has some amazing Mode7 and not-so-repetitive music.

Please tell me if you ever played this or the Arcade version, I am really curious.

UNDEADLINE / Undead Line
(click to show/hide)

It is hard. Really hard. Incredibly hard.
But also fair. There are no cheap shots.

The only thing necessary is to learn how it works. The weapons are partly useless, the shield is hard to use effectively and you need to be able to analyze the situation and take decisions very very quickly.

So, that game is about a Knight names Leon killing undead things, I assume. I haven't really read too deep into the story.
It is a vertically scrolling shooter, more or less. But you are a knight walking through medieval places and you are actually affected by the terrain. Mud slows you down, the water in the "Drain" stage pushes you back and you can run into trees, for example.
It has awesome music, good graphics, really cool bosses and the level design is unmatched. No game I ever played had such a high difficulty without ever feeling cheap or unfair.

P.S. The Rensha option is your friend. It gives you much-needed rapidfire.

Ah yes, I still have a copy of this. Incredibly strange and quirky. The last time I 'played' it (if it really qualifies as a game to be played), I discovered an entire menu option I never knew about! Turns out pressing up on the main menu did something all this time.

Yeah, I also made that interesting observation.

I also noticed that Bomberman suffered a similar box art quality thing as Mega Man, but it's to a lesser extent.
Look at the orignal NES game box (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/72/BombermanCover.jpg). It looks nothing like Bomberman.

And, Bomberman II's NES box art (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3a/Bomberman2Cover.jpg) has even fatter Bomberman.

Now, time to get Super Bomberman 2... somehow.

Obscure games? Well that's something. This was a game so unbelievably obscure that I can't even remember the name of it (how helpful), but it was some old DOS game I played back in late 1994, 2D-platforming nonsense in which you controlled some sort of spaceman or other and explored caves to collect treasures, all while avoiding aliens and all the usual hazards present in these sorts of games (pits, spikes, random green shit, fire etc.). Nobody else who I've ever mentioned this game to knows what I'm talking about, and often look at me for it as if I've just contracted leprosy.

I only remember it myself for two reasons:
- Really stupid and lacklustre music.
- When you died, your guy's head disappeared and smoke was seen coming from the neck of his suit.

Oh and of course the shitty DOS Mega Man games. I had trouble convincing some people that they even exist.

Its full of violence and gore, sex, masturbation, murder, suicide, child abuse, profanity, cannibalism, prostitution, pedophilia, molestation, arson, theft, serial killing, senicide, racism, and much much more. You NEED to see it for yourself. One of the goriest (EDIT:Well not really the goriest but very detailed.) games I have played.

You talking about Crystal Caves?

I don't think anyone I knew had ever heard of these games, much less played them.

Nope, as obvious as it would seem. You're not the first person to suggest this, and I doubt you'll be the last either. Trying to find whatever this game is though is frustrating, because I know it exists!

I've heard of them, but have played precisely none of them. I remember reading a preview of Metal Marines as a kid, and then never saw anything of it ever again.

I watched someone play MoO2, actually. I am thinking about maybe getting it someday, but it isn't too high on my priority list.
Mainly because I kind of stopped playing Turn-Based Strategy games.
It does look really good from what I've seen.

The second one though makes you feel like you're playing Megaman Unlimited 2: Electric Boogaloo.

Master of Orion II is pretty well-known, or at least known enough for it to not really count as obscure.

I own it through GoG, and although I like 4X games in general, I've never really managed to get into it. In my opinion, its fantasy cousin by the same company, Master of Magic, is the more enjoyable game, even though it is hilariously broken not as well-designed as the former.

Heh, Toy Commander. I have a game pretty similar to it- I thought it was a game where you took control of plastic toy soldiers, but you just play as some shrunken kid with a dart gun.

It was a disappointing purchase, to say the least.

At least the US box somewhat represented what was in the game. The Pal box? Not so much!

Cleopatra Fortune. By Taito and Natsume.

I don't know what to think of this game anymore.
When playing it on the Taito Legends 2 collection on my PAL PS2 is the very epitome of "It's so broken and mediocre it's fun".
I tried to compare if MAME does a better job at emulation than Taito's official PS2 emulation and I found out that ... the game is kind of not as good.

Ultimate Fighter?

Yes. Freakin' YES! I used to play the tournament mode for hours with some of my friends, hell I even played that game for hours by myself. Wonderful story mode, a really unique counter and critical system, just a really out-there and great game.

The story mode was more of a beat 'em up with tournament fighter sections for the bosses. Oh and transformations complete with laser swords so you could fight against the power rangers from hell.

Good times.

Man i've never seen so much praise for this game. Most of the things in game were never explained especially combat wise. I did play some tournament mode back in the day though. Still i rented it more than once so in a way i "liked" it.

A strange puzzle game that sucked away hours of time at my friend's place. Nobody else seems to remember this, although I know that I'm not the only one who's played it... right?

What I remember most about this game was the awful music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTDNECHVtoQ).

Edit:
Jesus Christ he looks like this idiot (http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/egamia/images/9/92/LestertheUnlikely_boxart.jpg) on that box art.

I don't think you'll ever see this much praise for that game anywhere else, lol. I agree, the game's advanced mode was a little hard to figure out at first but it also had the simple mode that resembled standard tournament fighters a little more. There was also that option to play the boss fights RPG style. I remember the game being blindingly hard for me at first but I just powered through and mastered it.

I suggest you revisit it sometime, especially if you like beat 'em up/fighters, it's definitely one of those hidden gems :)

Well i made my buddy playthrough it, ofc we mostly made joke but he still finished it. Its one of those games that was changed to appeal more to the audience outside of Japan. Just look the Japanese version called "Hiryu No Ken" the characters are different looking.

One game that no one I know in real life knows about, and almost no one I know on the internet plays, would be Hexen. I love Hexen, it's a dark fantasy FPS based off the Doom engine, as well as an indirect sequel to Heretic.

Actually, now that I think about it, if we're only counting people we know IRL for who have played the game, I could say almost every game I own, even really popular ones like Doom, Touhou,Final Fantasy, and Okami, I could even say Ninja Gaiden (original trilogy on NES/Famicom), Mega Man, and Bubble Bobble. Most of the people I know IRL are casual as heck and don't go any further than playing MC, CoD, and Slender.

Another obscure game I've played is Nosferatu on SNES

So many bad memories with that game.  Every single time I'd go to try it again, I'd be optimistic, "Oh, I was probably just too young to understand it's mechanics and play it properly."

Nope.  I'm just bad at it.

So here's a little something

Gruntz
for PC
(click to show/hide)
I was trying to remember what the name of this game actually was 2 years ago and then I figured it out and I started playing it again
then I stopped and I still haven't beaten it yet so I might start playing it again

so basically, Gruntz is some sort of strategy puzzle game where you lead these little goo dudes (Gruntz) places so they can find the Warpstone and bring it back to their King
and uh that's really it for the story mode
there was a multiplayer mode but I don't really know
I played this game when I was like 5 or something

these (http://gooroosgruntz.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=GWhatIs&action=display&thread=354) linkz (http://gooroosgruntz.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=GWhatIs&action=display&thread=346) explain some basic mechanicz of the game
(the site itself is also really old; established sometime in 2003, and somehow it's still going, kind of)

Witch & Hero.

Super simple RPG Action game on the 3DS for $4 that got brutal reviews for being super simple, and apparently being super simple makes it a horrible game.

It's $4 what do you expect?!

There's a demo on the eShop go get it.

Yet people somehow praise Pushmo.
Seriously, how can people like such a boring game. I bought Pushmo because I saw the high ratings (they were higher than my favorite 3DS games) and when I played it, it was beyond awful, it was redundant, it was boring. Anyways, enough of that rant. Still though, it's amazing how people like Pushmo and don't like the game you've mentioned. It's such a world we live in, isn't it?

Oh, I've played the demo. It's actually kinda fun. Well, up until you max everything out and OHKO everything in sight :I
But I liked the game, it was a little unoriginal imo, but hey, isn't everything unoriginal now a days?
It was still fun, and I've never seen similar game play to this anywhere before. Although it gets boring after a little while.

On the Colonel Rating Metre (CRM)
I'd give it a 3.5/5 (Slightly above average)
Not, bad, but Slightly good.

Also, CutStuff Zombies kinda counts since I tested it out a bunch before, and I hella know noone touched CSZ before. So I won the thread :I

You can only level up so far in the demo, and I admit, the game suffers from the fact that you'll need to grind, especially later.

But for $4?  I think its excellent.

Finally found out what that stupid obscure game that I mentioned back here (http://www.cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=4964&start=130#p255545) is.

Gateworld (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gStQg1hl0H4). And after replaying it myself after so many years, I can say without a doubt that it's total shit. The level design means that you're blind for the most part, with all sorts of dickmoves in place that kill you immediately with absolutely no time to react.

(Note: The music in that video is not how I remember it at all, because it's made of shitty SoundBlaster farts. The standard Windows MIDI soundfont produces 'better' results, although it's still pretty crappy.)
