Title: Name something "underrated"
Post by: Ceridran on January 12, 2013, 02:09:30 PM
There are things in games that you could call underrated. Name what you think they are. This means playstyles, game functions, etc.

The Orc classtype, from Elder Scrolls 5: Skwoiremm Skyrim, because nobody ever uses it.
And anybody that does use the Orc always uses fire spells and such.

Lucca from Chrono Trigger. She has one of the highest magic stats in the game, and while I do appreciate some of the more popular characters like Frog, Robo, and Magus, Lucca's power and design just always stood out to me the most.

8BDM's MM10 Bass skin.  It may be a MegaMan edit, but at least it looks right with the Bass Buster, unlike SGC & RM7FC Bass.

Yoshi + Turbo Blooper in Mario Kart Wii. The best combination if you hate using roads.
Also, Nunchuck + Wiimote.

Ness in Super Smash Bros

people claim he sucks because they don't know how to use him

The first character I made in Skyrim was an Orc. :ugeek:

(Granted, I stopped playing him after an hour in favor of a mage, since playing the orc devolved mostly into one-hitting people with my huge-ass steel warhammer. That and never having enough blacksmithing stuff to make what I want.)

Force of Nature in Team Fortress 2.

Seriously why is there even debate about this thing, it's the ultimate scattergun Aside from the stock and the soda popper

I've always liked it's very nice fire rate and damage, and the lack of range is well worth these two attributes.

MegaMan Powered Up.  In my opinion,  the art/graphic style of the game was pretty great, as well as providing good remix + new compositions.  The voice acting was great too, the voices fit the characters well.  And there is so much content, that is fun, creative, and well.  Lovable.  So why did this game not sell well?  I don't know.  But if it did, they would have made Powered Up 2, or maybe even went further.

The two Okami games are underrated because Capcom would rather advertise something like street fighter which would sell well regardless.

Uncharged Atomic Fire in MM8BDM, because whenever I see people using AtomicFireWep, most of them WILL charge it.

That's because level 1 Atomic Fire barely does more damage than the Mega Buster.

Gradius Gaiden: SDL?OM with Force Field and Lord British. Also the female announcer. She just pronounces the names of the powerups in a positively weird way unlike the male one.

Fireball in Cave Story. I once killed all the bosses until the labyrinth with it. So much fun. (Not saying name because spoilers). (After that I used the Blade which is 573% better than the Nemesis.)

I was going to say Psychonauts, however it rose in popularity due to Humble Bundle. On a second guess, I'd have to say Radiata Stories. Developed by Tri-Ace and published by Square Enix. Wonderful game but sold rather poorly, I blame the lack of advertisement.

The Vorpal Blade in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
Just because it is OP as heck but always in the shadow of the Crissaegrim. Which is why nobody ever mentions it anywhere.

And the dagger item crash with its amazing crit rate is just so much cooler than Hydro Storm ...

Big Arm from Sonic 3 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

I just hate this stupid big hands... But in 3DS, he's MUCH easier, 'cause you can easily defeat him with the Homing Attack.

That sounds more like annoying, not underrated.

Also, the Spur line from Spiral Knights. It'd be looked torward more often if it had a 5 star upgrade.

The voice acting in X6 is overlooked. It's quite good compared to the usual Megaman voice acting we got at the time.

I'm thankful that they didn't dub it.

The Snake, from Cave Story. Its ability to shoot through walls is often overlooked.

"Oh, why get that when I can keep the Fireball and get the Spur later?"

Because the Snake has a greater reach than the Polar Star, it moves through walls, and it deals reliable damage.

I'm just curious on your perspective on this:
Do you know Japanese or do you just like the way they talk? Like, I see how you can sense the drama in the voice actors' voices, but doesn't it lose meaning when you have no idea what they're saying? I personally believe X4 voice acting got WAY too much hate. I mean, it wasn't as good as X8 or anything, but for the time it wasn't THAT bad and I consider it underrated just for all the jokes made of it (WHAT AM I FIGHTING FOR?!?!?!).

Our game is probably underrated, people sometimes think of a fan game as crappy and it's mostly true. But our game of MM8BDM proves them wrong.

Yup. This is why I won't play the class I submitted for Under Siege. When I finally get the base system done and I actually get around to coding the class...

Also, so this doesn't get too derailed....

Let's see...what do I know that's underrated...um...
Oh! I know! Accel World is sort of underrated from what I heard. It is at least under known.

I can't understand Japanese but I wish I could. I do like the way they talk, but it seems doubtful that it's what makes be think their VA is better.

Kirby's Dream Land 3?

It might not be as gigantic of a game as KSS but those graphics are just too good.

----

And Elevator Action Returns. That game is just so much unexpected awesomeness.
It is a 2D-Platformer centered on using doors and elevators. As opposed to the original you get three characters to choose from and the gameplay has quite a bit more depth.
Available on the PS2/Xbox/PC in the Taito Legends 2 collection and on the Sega Saturn and of course the Taito F3 System.

And then.. Resident Evil Gaiden. Story-wise, ain't so bad. But the gameplay is crap.

Indeed, my good man.

Tails from Sonic 2 onwards.
I mean really, has anyone wanted to play as Tails? He can fly, but in Sonic 2 he couldn't so, he was basically a retextured Sonic anyways.

and to save myself from posting again....
Mother 1 and 3 (2 underrated RPGs), Mother 2/Earthbound is my favorite among the 3, but everyone always talks about that, and how its still "underrated" I think with many people thinking the same thing, I think it is safe to say that Earthbound isn't that underrated after all, especially since it has been released for VC.
But Mother 1 or 3? Those didn't even come out in the English language, nor on the US or EUR regions.
Mother 1 was a bit of a challenging grind fest with all the random enemy encounters and what-not, but it still has a pretty nice story, some neat innovations slightly ahead of its time.
as for Mother 3, that really wasn't released in the English language at all, not even a prototype.
Nice to know some fans made a translation patch. A neat innovation that I liked was the beat-combos, using the music against the enemies will get you 16-hit combos, in an RPG. Such ignored innovations...

Yes, I almost always use Tails when playing Sonic 2. He has a fractionally smaller hitbox, and as such won't activate all of those fucking exploding star things on Metropolis Zone, resulting in a slightly easier (read as: less shitty and cheap) run through that particular zone. Score one for the mutant fox over the blue spiky thing.
