Title: Dimpsy's World Maps (Good News!)
Post by: Dimpsy on May 09, 2013, 06:29:29 PM
Hello! It's me again, the one who makes skins. I recently learned how to make maps too so I may as well start making some, don't expect a whole lot. Tried to get help but nobody would seem to provide anything at all.

===Gigapolis Zone===
My first map, this one is from Sonic Chaos. Sonic Chaos is a Sega Game Gear/Master System game that stars Sonic and Tails, as it was called Sonic & Tails in Japan. The only difference between the two versions of the game (Game Gear and Master System) is that some songs were changed, which is kinda strange and questioning. This map is an almost replica of the original Gigapolis Zone, brought to life into a 3D world. Sadly the tunnels that were in the stage do not work, and I couldn't get permissions to add Monitors and Springs. I don't even know how to add Springs to begin with, the prop, sure, but not the entire command it should be giving.

===Monstropolis Apt.===
What ya get when you put BBB&B and SRB2's "House" wad in a blender. Basically a Hotel/Apartment map where Cutstuff users can have rooms to stay in. This map was mostly made for roleplaying and for just hanging out.

Screenshots :
I posted several screenshots of the map in the last page for you to look at, but I will be posting updated screenshots here very soon...

Hmmm, not bad from what I'm seeing in these screen shots.
It's actually rather great considering its your first map. But some of this looks weird. Like the blue, laser looking things and the orange things.
But it's good.

Every single texture, apart from the tops of the textures are taken STRAIGHT from the game, even the blue and orange things. But thanks.

I don't really like what I see in the screenshots. I see a load of (very powerful) weapons scattered around in flat, easy to reach areas.

I can't tell a whole lot about the layout from the screenshots, but it looks a little maze-like. The textures look a little odd as well. I think they're pushing the color limit a bit.

Oh yeah, and the map is missing a proper skybox.

What part of FIRST map do you not get?
well he knows that, he's just telling you so you can improve on the map and also improve as a map-maker. if i made the first of something i'd want people to be critical so i can improve my skills.

Well, you're going to get some now, so try not to be dismissive.

I'll boot this map up later and check it out so I can give more feedback.

What reason would that be? You really shouldn't hide behind the fact that it's your first map to justify having mishaps. Trust me, you'll only be shooting yourself in the foot. If you want the map to have a good chance at being hosted and/or get better at mapping, I strongly advise that you get ready to take some criticism.

Of course though, there's nothing wrong either if you're just doing it for fun or to get the hang of map making. Either way, listen to what others say about it. It does help in the long run.

It was mainly just a first true map that I can showcase what I "can" do in a map. That means no ladders, spikes, water, and teleporters. Just a basic map I made, but I will expand upon it later.

For future note, if the music is part of the actual map (Not optional/duck music/20 other songs) then it's fine to include it in the map. Just don't clutter it with un-needed songs.

Mr. X's first map was MM6YAM.

You don't have an excuse.

Please note (like everyone else says) that using "first map" as a shield for criticism is a fantastic way to make yourself look like an epic moron in the eyes of the entire community, with ridicule sure to follow. If you want to suck less, look at other people's maps. See how they work and flow. Look at Doom mapping tutorials, too - the same principles apply for basic room design.

Because everyone totally starts off well, right? Except it was terrible fighting there, until Mr. X did the adequate changes to it, making it dozens of times better.

VS, I'll take a look at this map later and give you some tips. Since you said you're just seeing what you can do, I'll go easy on it and hopefully, you can learn something that'll help you later.

EDIT: Alright, I've looked at it. I see that you have mastered making slopes. You know, since you've just started making maps, this one's good for making tests and learning other things. For example, the walls have a sky texture. If you instead want a pit around the stage with a real sky, do the following:

- Make a sector surrounding the stage, then lower it and give that floor a BLACK texture.
- Make a square sector outside the map (256x256) and give it 255 brightness. This is your Skybox. Place those sky textures in the walls, ceiling and a BLACK texture on the floor of this sector.
- In this same sector, place a Skybox Viewpoint, located in Cameras and Interpolation, and give it a ZHeight of 8. Also make sure it's in the center of the Skybox.
- In the sector you made around the map, select the walls and give them all Action 9 (Line Horizon). Finally, take all of the ceilings in the map (except the Skybox's) and give them the texture F_SKY1.
- Test your map (F9).

For a pit that kills players, go see a tutorial. It's all in there.

Now then, you want to concentrate on the layout before even adding a health capsule. Try to add interesting stuff to those empty places, so that the map doesn't feel too plain. Also, when making any place, try to have more than one way into it. This is essential because DM maps are fast paced, meaning that players need routes to sneak up around opponents. Avoid dead ends for now, although I saw none.

Here's a very nice tutorial for beginners:

It's only a possibility, I won't be getting outside of Gigapolis for a LOOOONG time. And even then I still wouldn't be done, so your stage is going to be my next "example" stage.

For skybox: make a "Skybox Viewpoint" thing in your skybox, use the F_SKY1 as your ceiling, mark outside linedefs as "Line Horizon"

BTW, really appreciate your use of Pythagorean triangles for slopes.

Please note that these screenshots are NOT final and I will eventually go back to these and more and try to fix them up to look just a bit neater.

Next map I do plan to take on will probably be World 1-1 from Super Mario Bros. 3, at least if I get sky platforms to work (platforms that are not coming from the ground or ceiling). But if I learn about decoration and teleporters, I actually have a Pokemon map in mind with given concept from someone.

I'm not just gonna be making Sonic maps for this game, though a good idea I may wait until I've fully learned everything there is to mapping. Especially when it comes down to stuff like the water, and platforms. And I'm probably just gonna strict myself to existing Sonic 8-bit games as well, and there is an 8-bit Labyrinth that exists by Sega so I may end up using the official sprites.

So I took a look at your map...although it is a nice map, I personally think it still needs quite a bit of refining.

1. This map has NINETEEN weapons for such a small map. There are also quite a lot of support items as well, including two places to get Eddie. For a map this size, I would cut down the weapons in half. Some of the weapons, like Quick Boomerang and Power Stone, are kind of out of the way and a bit tricky to find. Also, Super Adaptor can be a game-changing weapon, and it is much easier to reach than the Beat Support item (which I thought was nicely placed, btw).

2. Looking at the location where we have the Pharaoh Shot Weapon and the E Tank, I think it should be just reversed. Imo, items like E Tanks should be more difficult to get than others.

3. I found a couple of linedef errors. Take a look around the five blocks that form a V formation near the Mirror Buster. One of the blocks turns invisible if you're inside the V formation.

4. Because of how the map is designed, I think weapons that benefit from terrain that varies in height would be good here. Search Snake, Scorch Wheel, and Napalm Bombs were good choices for this stage, though I do not feel weapons like Slash Claw work well here. I think Water Wave could be a good weapon to replace one in your map.

5. Two Leaf Shield Pickup locations? Seems kind of weird.

Otherwise, I feel your stage is pretty good, though for my tastes it is pretty small. It has potential.

I won't be doing just Sonic maps, in fact I don't really have much in mind unless it's from the Game Gear titles. And don't expect really any maps that much from me, the next two maps I have planned are NOT Sonic ones but in fact Mario and Pokemon ones. I'll even do some other maps from other games and or franchises. One which I may most likely do is probably one of the Mare Stages from Mega Pony, or something else.

I've started a brand new map, and it's meant to be built specifically for a Doom Mod "Cyberrunner". I know this may sound silly, but the mod does work for MM8BDM so whatever...

Title: Re: Dimpsy's World Maps (RETURNING WITH A NEW MAP...)
Post by: Dimpsy on January 22, 2014, 06:47:02 AM
Why yes, I actually got off my ass to work on a map for once.
And this one was sort of interesting.
Today I introduce, simply called for now "Dimpsy's Hotel".
Basically, it's a mix of one of the maps from Sonic Robo Blast 2's "House" wad, as well as GumballToid's "Blue Bomber Bed & Breakfast" wad. But more along the lines of the House wad from SRB2... only with just one map... maybe?
Basically this map is for RPs, but it can also be used as just a Hangout server. Don't worry you people who like to kill players, I plan to add a Deathmatch area specifically for you guys, especially if those who wanna RP would rather be left alone.

Here are some images with descriptions...

(click to show/hide)
Outside of the hotel, even comes with a little pond.

(click to show/hide)
Auto: Hello there, would you like a room?
The entrance to the hotel. As well as a short look at the Women's Bathroom.

(click to show/hide)
The entrance to the Men's Bathroom, even comes with a couple Iceman statues to represent. The Women's Bathroom has a couple Roll statues even.

(click to show/hide)
The Men's Bathroom. Comes with 5 toilets and three sinks.

(click to show/hide)
Closer look into the sinks.

(click to show/hide)
This is one of the areas where the rooms will be made, this applies to the right side as well.
For the left side, I will be using, well, the left side for the rooms.

(click to show/hide)
This is where CutmanMike's room will be set, though it is subject to change.

(click to show/hide)
So this was made during a whole day, right? Well it can't be without it's current bugs, if you jump out of the pond a specific way, you reach a part where you can swim even further. I will see what I can do to fix that.

(click to show/hide)
The skybox's background will also need to be fixed up a bit.

That's all I have for you guys, this was made in a whole day mind you. And it's still not finished...

But here's the interesting part, the rooms will not consist of the Robot Masters from Mega Man's 1-8 like Blue Bomber Bed & Breakfast and Wily Inc., instead these rooms will be of various Cutstuff users! Yes indeed, I will give each and everyone of you the opportunity to have a room. The room amount might be limited, possibly. So you will need to be quick on that.
This is basically where I take more inspiration off of SRB2's "House" wad rather than GumballToid's BBB&B map. Same theme as both, but I will be taking liberties of my very own.
Right now I do not know how to add doors, sadly. So that will have to be saved for another time.
I also plan to add various other things, like a house for me because I am the creator of this map, so it's only fair that I can give myself an advantage.

Now here's how the rooms will work, you can select what color/texture you want your wallpaper to be. If it is a custom texture, then I would like to be handed said texture(s). This applies to your bed as well. You can also select what shows up on TV. Because instead of having the user's name appear on the screen as well as their "persona" for MM8BDM (Again, SRB2's House wad), I will allow you to suggest any pic that can appear on your TV. This can range from just about anything, though I think I will probably hold on that until I can find out the best picture size it needs to be. Though I could always just scale it up/down.
You can also select very minor stuff that can appear in your room. Like decorations, though I'd prefer you suggest core ones right now. Unless you have made a decor that's fully functional in MM8BDM, I will learn how to make decorations later, so don't pitch a fit if I can't add in something like a Sonic-themed prop.
And if you really want to, you can select what weapon(s)/item(s) appear in your room. Ranging from the Flash Bomb, to Rush Jet. But I will not be allowing all weapons, so any weapon that isn't allowed in BBB&B will not be allowed here, either. With the exception of the Sakugarne because we have a Quint Class that drops the weapon anyways so what's the point?

I will make a much more brief description of what can be added to your room later. For now, this is all just previews.

EDIT: Renamed to "Monstropolis Apt.", Monstropolis being the homeland to Mega Man I suppose, it's the only name that was given for Mega Man's homeland and it was just one game.
Also you need to have been around the Forums/Community long enough to get a room. I think this should reduce a lot of newbies from coming here trying to claim a room and then a lot of work for me.
This is also mostly just a side-project, so I won't be working on this ALL the time, I got other stuff for MM8BDM I work on a little more than maps.

Do note that this is very early works, so I could very well be changing that hallway. Especially so it doesn't look like it's JUST red.

That's great if you wanna add your room yourself, I'll just send in the map in a private message (or Skype if you have one), and you can add in your room. This is so you don't work on the room on an outdated map.

So today I have even more images to show.
(click to show/hide)
The Girls Bathroom has been updated to include toilets (Again, can't doors right now).

(click to show/hide)
The Hallways were updated to include pictures of the core MM8BDM maps.

(click to show/hide)
...the other side...

(click to show/hide)
The skybox was changed because I couldn't get the other one working right.

(click to show/hide)
My house...

(click to show/hide)
A look inside it, it's still not finished.

Anyways, here's a much more brief summary of the things that can be added to your room.

Walls/Floors/Ceiling/Bed Color/Texture- (Color/Texture) If it's a custom texture(s), please give me them so I can add them.

TV screen- (Image) If it's a custom texture, please give me it so I can add it. I currently do not care what the size is, just don't make it too big.

Room Portrait- (Image) It must be a 32x32 image of either your profile picture, or your main OC.

Misc- This can range from props to other small stuff. I currently can't do windows, doors, or custom props right now. So it has to be pretty basic.

If you are a mapper, you can add whatever you want to your room, but this means you'll have to wait until either I send you a private demo of it, when someone is finished using it and adding their room, and when I finish making the template rooms. This means one person at a time, though if you can't map, I can generally take a few requests and can get them done.

Again, I will learn how to make custom decorations/props, but for now you'll have to choose one of the core decor/props.

Released the 0th version of my new map I'm working on.
This was mostly made for testing, and for those who wanna get a taste of what the map is about.
So do note that this is FARRRRRRRRR from finished.

This includes several things :
- My House
- Deathmatch Arena
- 4 Apt. Rooms (Two being taken, the Ringman-themed room is TailsMK4's room, and the Heatman-themed room is Tev's room)
- A little bit more... not much. :/

So some good news and bad news.

The good news is I have made a new map I'll be showing off soon, as well as future maps I'll be making... maybe.
The bad news is, Montropolis Plaza is cancelled... or is it?
Thanks to Jakeinator, I have gotten a new DooM Builder which seems much better in making stuff like 3D Floors (For those who dunno, basically the thing that allows you to make floating platforms) and Slopes, I've even got 3D Floors in general working now.
Gigapolis Zone will likely be remade using 3D Floors, and will probably be more of a joy thanks to that, and said new map I'll be revealing soon even uses them (though they were added in by a revamp Jake made).
A new map is planned sometime, as well.
