Title: The MM8BDM Olympic Games!
Post by: King Dumb on June 12, 2013, 10:18:20 PM
It’s summer, and that means it’s time for the Cutstuff Community to gather for events of all kinds. Last year, I brought to you a classic Duel tournament. While this tournament was a success, I feel that this year, given the current state of the community, it’s time to try something a whole lot bigger. An event of this scale has been attempted in the past and did fail. I come to you today with the promise that I will do everything in my own power to sustain this event through completion. As you know and will be covered, however, you, the participant, must also do your part to keep this event (or, rather, group of events) alive.

And so, I present to you…

The MM8BDM Olympic Games!

Yes, you read that right. The MM8BDM Olympics will consist of a variety of events for which individuals may sign up. There’s a lot to cover, so I’ll begin.

What are the MM8BDM Olympics?

(click to show/hide)

How does it work?

(click to show/hide)

What are the technicalities?

Players sign up for all events in which they wish to participate in their sign-up post. In this post, players also specify their teammates. A participant may only be in one duo, one team of three, and one team of five. These duos/teams may then participate in the number of duo/team events of their choosing. Players who sign up without a team but wish to participate in team events have two options. They may organize themselves into teams with other players in the same situation, or they may subscribe for the Team Creator (TC). The TC will be a randomized system where individuals and duos may sign up to be randomly placed into teams of three or five based upon request.

The end product of the team-creation process will be a participant body consisting of individuals, duos, teams of five, and teams of three, with overlap. As such, there will be many kinds of winners in the Olympics, divided into three tiers:

Tier 3: Anyone who participates can win something here!
Gold Medal: Awarded to the player (and all players, in team/duo events) who wins the event.
Silver Medal: Awarded to the player (and all players, in team/duo events) who places second in an event.
Bronze Medal: Awarded to the player (and all players, in team/duo events) who places third in an event.

Tier 2: Players wishing to win here should max out their participation in one or more event categories!
Individual Winner: The participant with the highest Gold Medal-to-participation ratio in individual events.
Duo Winner: The duo with the highest Gold Medal-to-participation ratio in duo events.
Team of Three Winner: The team of three with the highest Gold Medal-to-participation ratio in 3v3 events.
Team of Five Winner: The team of five with the highest Gold Medal-to-participation ratio in 5v5 events.

Tier 1: Players wishing to win here should participate in the maximum 15 events! Only for the most devoted!
Best Medalist: The player with the most medals.
Gilded Man/Woman: The player with the most gold medals.

(Watch this space in the near future! Something cool may be said!)

Within each event category (of which there are four; individual, duo, 3v3, and 5v5), there is a minimum number of events in which you must participate to be eligible for Tier 2 awards.

Individual: 8
Duo: 6
3v3: 4
5v5: 3

Additionally, players may participate in no more than 27 events total. You may reduce your participation in any category of events should you wish to maximize your participation in more than one event category, but bear in mind that you will be ineligible for Tier 2 awards should you participate in fewer than the above minimums.

What are the events?

I’m certain you’re all dying to know in what events you may participate. So, without further ado:

Individual Events: 12
Duel
Deathmatch
Last Man Standing
Possession
MMSP Speed Runs (4)
Break The Targets! Speed Runs
Jousting
Bot Rush
Rage Roboenza

Duo Events: 8
2v2 Classes Deathmatch
Duo MMSP Speed Runs (4)
2v2 Team Last Man Standing
2v2 Team Deathmatch
Cooperative Break the Targets!

Team Events: 14
The following events are all available in 3v3 and 5v5. Events with minimal sign-up may be removed, and signed up may reorganize into available events. I reserve the right to cancel any of the following events in the event of scheduling difficulties.

Team Deathmatch
Team Last Man Standing
Capture The Flag
One-Flag Capture The Flag
Team Possession
Mega Man Soccer
Screw Scramble

Event Information: All you need to know, but please ask questions, too!

Very Important! Please notify of all conflicts you have, especially with Free-For-All events. If need be I can change the times for one or both groups of preliminary rounds in FFA events, but only if you let me know! Otherwise, clear your calendars!

**Note**

At times when I have servers to spare, I may put up some of the date-specific events that follow. If a server is BE and its name begins with *Olympics Official*, then that is an official server. No doubt people will try to create fake servers, but I won’t have access to those logs so they won’t do damage. But if you do do this, know that if I find out you’ll be out of the Olympics.

Following are more specific details on the events. Questions may be directed to me in any medium you please.

Rules

Rules for particular events will be released closer to the event times, but the following are the ground rules for the MM8BDM Olympics:

1. I am the final authority on all matters in the Olympics. I will be an unbiased, nonparticipating third party. I reserve the right to make judgments on eligibility, ties, and other conflicts as they arise. I reserve the right to remove any participant from an event or the Olympics should I deem such an action appropriate. I do yield, however, not to change the following rules as you see them, with the exceptions noted in rules 6 and 8.

2. By breaking any of these rules, or any event-specific rules, you allow me the power to punish you as little or as much as I deem fit.

3. By signing up, you agree to both the following rules and you place your faith in me to produce appropriate event-specific rules.

4. By signing up, you are committing yourself to make every reasonable effort to complete the Olympic Games.

5. All official events will take place either on my own servers (powered by BE) or on servers I explicitly approve.

6. Glitch abuse and SR50 are permitted, however the use of outside software (such as Skullhack or aimbot) is not permitted.
*I do reserve the right to ban glitch that I deem overcentralizing or game-breaking.

7. In the event of connection problems during official events, the accepted protocol will be to wait as long as reasonably possible for the issues to disappear or be resolved. If the issues do not resolve, the protocol will be to suspend the event and contact me as soon as possible with all details.

8. If it comes to be required that players report scores or outcomes to me, I require verification by one of the following means:
-One participant from each side in team, one-on-one, or 2v2 events.
-Screenshot
-One participant from a side and one spectator
-Two spectators
*If I deem some other manner of reporting acceptable, it need not satisfy one of the above requirements.

9. Behaviour that I deem disruptive, grossly unsportsmanlike, and/or immature to the point of substantial impact is subject to rule 1.

10. By signing up, you agree to responsibly and vigilantly check your Cutstuff PMs and other forms of contact you provide for information regarding the Olympics.

Since everyone's forced to use Mega Man for the speed run events, will it be "vanilla" Mega Man or Lego's Strength in Numbers version? Also, for the jousting will we use the (outdated) Ivory's Jousting, or can we use the much more scientifically satisfying CSCC Fusion Jousting?

I would suggest changing the duel set up to number of wins/loses instead of a random bracket so that second place and third place winners are deserving of their medals; i.e. don't face first place on their first or second round and then get eliminated right from the start. This will make it fair game for all competitors instead of giving some players easier wins until the semi-finals/finals, or giving some players harder match-ups in the beginning causing early elimination. Not only will this set up make it more fair for second and third place medalists but also allow the worse players to get to face every player instead of getting eliminated from the start and only facing one or two. By the way, when I say duel I mean all events that will be using this set up; i.e. team games.

Duel
Participants who sign up for the Duel event will be participating in a tournament, featuring a preliminary round leading to a classic bracket-style contest. The losers of the two semi-final rounds will battle for the Bronze Medal.

As stated in the original post, the Duel event features a preliminary round and then a bracket competition. The preliminary round serves the purpose of seeding the bracket. As such, performing well in the first round makes your seeding in the bracket more favorable.

Duel is currently the only event planned to feature a second bracket phase. The only other events for which you may see this second phase are head-to-head duo events, but currently this is not planned.

Although I'm not signing up for them, I'm curious about the MMSP Speedrun and Rage Roboenza events. For MMSP, will players have all 4 weapons, or will they be restricted to Mega Buster? And how would wins be counted in Rage Roboenza? Often, multiple people 'win' in a round...Unless you mean the true Rage Roboenza victory; being the last survivor and killing every infected player to become the last man standing.

Name one majorly abusable glitch in MM8BDM.

Please, enlighten me.
It's all about SR50. I don't think there are any majorly abusable glitches, but if there are, they should be banned along with SR50. I don't care who thinks otherwise, and even if I'm not participating, it makes me feel bad about the rest of the folks who play the game without any of that shit. Normal strafe running is fine, self explanatory, and easy to do by anyone.

It's like all those "techniques" in SSB Melee that exploit something in the game to have an advantage. I don't bash the people who play like that, but it fucking ruined the game for me. Don't like that? It's my opinion, suck it up. Being a pretentious ass doesn't help your case anyway.

So somebody shouldn't have the advantage if they go the extra mile to win?

Seems reasonable.
Title: Re: The MM8BDM Olympic Games!
Post by: King Dumb on June 17, 2013, 01:57:53 AM
This may turn into a pointless argument.

I can't really think of any majorly exploitable glitches myself, either; that phrase was just put in there both to cover my bases and to cover things some people may believe are glitches but aren't.

In short, I'm not banning SR50 because everyone has the ability to do it. There is a guide posted in the Tutorials section of the forums, and if people really wanted I could post a quick guide on how to do it with one key held down. In other words, it is just as easy to SR50 as it is to shoot while moving.

Also, back on track here. If have or are going to sign up for MMSP Speed Runs, please specify which of the four official maps you wish to participate on; if you don't specify, I will assume you want to compete for all four maps.

General Info

Time Zone: Central Standard Time
Location (some sense of latitude): South Central Texas
Events
Individual Events:

Deathmatch
Last Man Standing
Possession
Rage Roboenza

Duo Events:

None (do not have a partner)

3v3 AND 5v5 Events:

Team Deathmatch
Team Last Man Standing
Capture The Flag
One-Flag Capture The Flag
Team Possession
Screw Scramble

Unfortunately, I have never played Mega Man Soccer. I may change my mind later if I get introduced to it.

At this point I have not contacted anyone for possible teammates, so I will submit myself to the TC, unless anyone wants to pick me for their teams. The events I have listed are the ones I am interested in. I do work during the weekends, so I will need to know event times in advance. Also, at the end of August, I will be back in college, so daytime events will be harder for me to attend.

EDIT: Also, I can help host servers, since I am able to host with BE as well.

EDIT2: A 5 vs 5 is in the making right now, and I may or may not form a 3 vs 3 with a different group, or with members from the 5 vs 5 team. At this point I am not considering Duo. So I am no longer participating in the TC. I know someone PMed me earlier about a possible team. That may still be a possibility at this point...but I will have to see how the 5 vs 5 planning turns out.

I still think using original Bass in a Mission Mode contest is really dumb considering that his playstyle is literally "get to low health as fast as you can and then obliterate everything in sight". Proto Man has some really cool weapons in his arsenal and Roll would be really fitting as a support considering you have a two-man band. I don't know if this is static yet so don't freak out, but I might end up withdrawing from the Double Speed Run if original Bass ends up staying in.

Also, what would be REALLY convenient for forgetful procrastinators such as myself would be if you just put a timeline of every event instead of breaking up the contest dates and throwing them across the entire post. Having everything in one place would help out a ton since people could just go "oh, tomorrow's Free-For-All Deathmatch".

Took a look at the banned classes. Why is Air Man on there?

Charge Man and Enker and those guys are all fine, but why Air Man? Is it because he can't be defeated or something?
Title: Re: The MM8BDM Olympic Games!
Post by: Hallan Parva on June 29, 2013, 04:22:38 AM
It's because he has a 2HKO shotgun with an amazing (semi-anti-air) distance on alt.

I don't understand Charge Man myself since he's shorter range than Stone Goliath Man but WHATEVER

I think it was because of his sturdy armor and his ability to beat you to a pulp without taking too much damage.

All hardbanned classes have distinct features that allow them to dominate gamepley; they were banned because two ideal players would logically only choose among them (generally speaking).

Also, a 2v2 Classes TDM *Olympics Official* server is up and running!

Coming soon will be a visual guide to wins/losses in all events!

At last... my final seeding match. Magnetdood versus myself... the time has come to prove that I'm a force to be reckoned with!
The night grows late, and we meet at Shade Man's castle, preparing for the final battle of the preliminaries. At the count of one, we took off, blasters ready! One frag, two frag, three frag, dead... but I can get one more! 4 - 1, and five minutes in! I can win this, I can...

Fall to my death. ohgodwhy.

Mags won, 3 - 5.

Seriously though, that was probably the most fun I've ever had dueling. Good game!

Today -NG- had begun their matches. Mainly against [No Name Given] Team 2

We started out horribly in TLMS, losing to Sir Lemon and SKZ in a 3-0 win series

But -NG- had redeemed theirselves by winning in TDM 20-14 against Lemon and SKZ....tagless.

something tells me -NG- brings bad luck O.O

I beat GBT and Cvid to sweep my seeding matches with a total frag given count of -1. Is that worth anything?

Lets not forget. Cvid DID get a frag on you that one time. So technically, the frags given count is 0.

Does this mean we can use Pro Guts Man? :ugeek:

For some people, the Individual Events begin in...like 18 hours? Either way, I wish everyone participating the best of luck. I have already told KD via PM that I have decided to drop out. My work hours are getting unpredictable, so I may not have been able to attend some events until late at night on Friday and Saturday. I may show up as a spectator, but do not expect me to play. I hope to get some footage recorded later so we can look back at this competition.

Reminder that the LMS and DM events are tonight!

The first preliminary round of Deathmatch will occur at 8:00 PM EST sharp! Please arrive by 7:45 PM EST if you plan to make that round, and I advise you make the early round if you are able to. Due to scheduling constraints, there will be no grace period! We begin at 8:00 PM EST!

Last Man Standing will begin at 8:30 PM EST, or as close to that as possible. Please arrive before that time into the server, however. We will wait no more than 10 minutes for players, unless the early Deathmatch round runs over, which it should not.

Also Poppy Bros put up a fight against GBT's and Tengu's combined forces and won pluckily in Snake Man for TLMS.

Gumballtoid and I are withdrawing from all duos events. He's on vacation, we have too many matches to get done, and we're both very unprepared. I'll still be doing my other events, but this one is a no-go.

Noted. Thank for letting us know.

Final reminder about the DM and LMS finals tonight, at 8:30 PM EST and 10:00 PM EST respectively!

Important Note!!

Due to circumstances out of my control (sounds tacky, right?) I will be tied up for a currently indefinite amount of time this evening, which may mean I do not make it back in time for the Deathmatch finals. I am trusting Orange Juice (who is not a participant in this event) to mediate/administrate in my absence if need be.

The Deathmatch finals is a simple 15-minute fragfest taking place on MM2DW1. At the end of fifteen minutes, the top three contestants will win first, second, and third in the event.

I apologize for this conflict, and realize it is unprofessional. I will certainly be back in plenty of time for the LMS finals.

Second Important Note!!

I am as well aware as everyone else that the Olympics have slowed down considerably. Yes, this is saddening, and yes, I probably could have done a bit more to help it, but whatever. The primary responsibility is on the participants to complete their matches. Unfortunately, Best-Ever servers has been undergoing many changes in the past week or two, which has made keeping servers up difficulty. Despite all this, the Olympics will continue to go on, especially with more singles events occurring next week.

That being said, I can only host a few servers at once, and will be gone between Sunday and Wednesday; during this time, I will have some servers up for people to complete 3v3 team events.

Additionally, a number of people had given me prior notification of absence over the last week, so I will also extend the Duel seeding phase to when I return on Wednesday evening. This will, however, be the last extension.

Finally, those who wish to are welcome to make their own servers to play matches on at this point, as long I receive proper verification of results.
