Title: SBWT Mapping Competition (Winner Results!)
Post by: Ivory on June 21, 2013, 07:02:27 PM
Hey all you Mega Man fans! Are you ready for yet another mapping compo? Of course you are! But you are probably confused right now to what SBWT means.

Download Here https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/333 ... TCompo.pk3 (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/33338072/MM8BDM-SBWTCompo.pk3)
Find out who won here! (http://www.cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=5754&start=120#p247973)

V3B is looking to replace four maps, Spring Man, Burst Man, Wave Man and Top Man with new versions and we are looking at you, the community, to give a helping hand! The former 3 have been regularly voted on being objectively bad maps. Top Man also had enough votes that even CutmanMike wished for it to be replaced with a less boring map. So that's that I suppose, the best voted map of each stage will replace the current core map, and one grand prize will go to the overall best map of all four categories. Best of luck everyone~
Please register in this thread or to me via skype if you have me.

Prizes: One Grand Prize Winner will get a shiny mapping competition medal. The other 3 maps that make it in gets a Proto medal.

Other Notes
For Wave Man, there is this pre-made file that contains interior textures and other unused textures. (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/33338072/waveman-newtextures.wad)

AS ALWAYS, READ THIS
We reserve full right to accept or deny any maps. If you want your map to be accepted into MM8BDM, you must be a part of this mapping competition. Anyone trying to offer maps without being a part of it will be instantly denied. Furthermore, if we ask for any fixes or tweaks, they must be done or otherwise the maps are not getting in.

Can we only submit one map, or are we allowed to submit more?

You can only sign up for one map at a time! Once you get your submission in, then I will accept a new sign up for a different category.

So does that mean I can submit ONLY one map for spring man, and then submit one map for top man? Or does it just mean only one map in total?
"Once you get your submission in, then I will accept a new sign up for a different category."
This is what confuses me.
Title: Re: Show some love for SBWT Mapping Competition!

Ah, basically you can only sign up for one map at a time. Once you submitted a map, then you can sign up for a new one. This rule is more or less to keep mappers from signing up for a bunch of maps, trying to work on them at once and that sort of deal. I rather everyone focus on one map at a time.

I wish to do Top Man. I may be able to do something with it while on holiday.
That if, I don't get distracted with SMBC 3.0 or something.

EDIT: Wait, no, I'll take Wave Man.

Reidakk is not able to get on right now, so he asked to be signed up for MM3TOP.

EDIT: Are we able to submit already existing maps we've made? (Example: MM5WAVX from me).

I can allow that, yes. Both of you are signed up.

Do you have to retain gimmicks already present in the core maps? ("Space Slime" in Burst Man, Wave Bikes in Wave Man)

EDIT: awwwww MM5WAVX sucks though

I expected better of you Knux :ugeek:

Oh and I would like to remind everyone, but check out my unused textures pack. It might be of help!

I'm leaving that up to the mappers, however I would recommend to try and keep present gimmicks intact, most notably, I'm sure getting rid of wave bikes entirely would be upsetting, and it is possibly something that will be judged on.

I am kind of upset still about how the CTF compo was handled in terms of the anonymity. When we are told that the creators of the maps will remain anonymous but in the end it isn't held through without consent of the mappers in seeing if they would still wish to remain anonymous is poor care.
As much as people may wish it not to happen, knowing who made a map can sway their vote. If you like the person you are in fact more likely to vote for them as it does work the other way as well, if you don't like the person or don't know them, you are less likely to vote for them. This is without regard of the map itself.
You may love the map and absolutely hate the mapper, where not everyone may, it is likely to have the later effect someone's vote.

As long as people don't actually see which maps belong to which people, which, eesh I hope that can trusted or enforced upon, it should be fine.

The general public cannot be trusted with votes. This has been proven several times already.

How about make the poll in a place where only trusted users (Aka: those who did something relevant in favor of the community) can go?

I would much rather have the compo hosts have quality control. They are the ones with the most experience, after all.

On another note, Reidakk has submitted his Top Man map.

EDIT: No, really. Submitting a map I spent time and effort on, just for everyone to go and vote for their favorite mapper, is a slap in the face. I think the judges should be the hosts of the competition only, but not just because they're experienced, like in this case. It's also because we wouldn't get factions voting for the sake of voting, and thus, we don't have people feeling bad they entered the competition.

Although I believe that this search for better maps would go more smoothly if we could all share our ideas. As in, not a competition.

Yup. I don't see how public voting could not turn into a dick-waving popularity contest.

Just to make it clear for everyone, for those of you with Top Man, you can use that beta background that used to be in the stage. It would greatly help the map look more interesting.
Title: Re: Show some love for SBWT Mapping Competition!
Post by: Hallan Parva on June 22, 2013, 05:42:42 PM
SO WHERE IS IT

not to be a dick or anything, but since said background is just tile parts, we could all end up with completely different skyboxes, which noticeably splits apart the playing field and could end up having adverse effects on the desirability of our maps

if there's a standardized skybox (like the extra Wave Man tileset pack) that'd be fine

but as it is I'm sort of opposed to a random variable in an event where we're supposed to all be on even ground
Title: Re: Show some love for SBWT Mapping Competition!
Post by: Ivory on June 22, 2013, 05:53:13 PM
There is now a link to where you can find it the other notes section of the opening post. Just keep in mind, while it looks nice, skyboxes can be added in later. Textures can be adjusted later, what I'm looking for is a solid layout.

So Smashbro brought something up to me, so I'll share it here as well.

You can use custom music in your map entries. However, if the map gets accepted, it's obviously going to be using the vanilla music.

Post by: Linnie on June 23, 2013, 04:23:28 AM
Pardon me for asking, but, where may I find the vanilla mapping conventions?

Being someone who has never made a map, I know I stand a snowball's chance in hell of winning, but, I'd like the experience of trying, and I'm unfamiliar with said conventions. Is there a thread that lists the mapping conventions?
Title: Re: Show some love for SBWT Mapping Competition!
Post by: Ivory on June 23, 2013, 04:48:15 AM
Hey Linnie, don't be like that. We've had some pretty impressive mappers show up out of the blue and designed a beautiful map that could compete with the veterans of the community, you could be the next one too.

Anyways, the conventions aren't too much to worry about, if it looks like an official map, then generally you are on the right track, but the some rules of thumb off the top of my head.
1) No Diagonal sectors that aren't 45 degrees, or circular.
2) All sector brightness is at 255
3) Sector heights should increment/decrement in multiples of 16.

There aren't any hard conventions listed anywhere, even though I could of sworn Mike mentioned them somewhere, but oh well, hopefully that can help.

I'd be happy to provide feedback and whatnot for other entries, since I'm just here to try and help get some good maps into the core. And if need be, I'd also be fine with my entry being discounted from being judged for the grand prize or whatever, since I've already got a mapping compo medal.

On an unrelated note, I'll probably send in a FOR REAL THIS TIME final version of my Top Man map tonight. Kapus pointed out a particularly nasty problem that I overlooked, and if left in, could very easily break the map.

Wow, people are submitting theirs in this early? Ivory's given us a good three weeks. I'm still doing Wave Man's layout, which I've got in mind.

Also, I'm going to be away for most of the time, but I'll be able to take my laptop with me which I do everything on there anyway (I'm told that there's WiFi at the hotel I'll be staying at, but there's no telling on how good it is).

Well Beed, in mine and Reidakk's case, our maps were already complete. I had to re-submit Reidakk's two times though, because it had errors. Hopefully, they're all fixed now.

Post by: Ivory on June 25, 2013, 03:53:37 PM
Of course, I'm aiming to see well done maps. It's hard to make a well done map without some form of feedback.
Title: Re: Show some love for SBWT Mapping Competition!
Post by: Linnie on June 26, 2013, 10:37:56 PM
I apologize if it's too much to ask at this current point in time, but, although I still have about a third of my map left to go -- note that there was a short while in which I wasn't working on my map due to not knowing how to create a spring zone and not knowing how to properly ask, and that the majority of the work was done over the course of today -- I'm likely done editing for the day and will pick up tomorrow, and was wondering if someone would take a look at the structure of the map and give me feedback. I'm only asking because the last section of my map I estimate to be the most complex to make I don't want there to be some huge overlooked problem with a previously made portion of my map before I begin working with the final section.

If someone is generous enough to take a short look, I'd be most grateful. It's not decorated up pretty or anything -- I'll most likely simply ask someone else to assist me once the layout is complete -- but I'm most worried about the workability of it thus far.

I'm also unsure how to go about sending the map. If anyone could give me a hand with such, then when someone is able to perceive my draft of the map I'll PM them it.

EDIT: Would it be possible if it were another contestant looking at it? Showing a non-contestant which map is mine may cause bias when voting for said map, since it was said earlier that if the makers of each map are known, it could cause bias as people may vote for a map due to the maker. If they could just PM me -- I don't want to cause bias in the event that whomever is helping me would gain votes on my map just for them helping me -- we could discuss this much better without revealing any aspects of the map that could allude to which it is once the voting starts. I apologize if I'm being more paranoid than I should be.

Wow, Wave Man now has significantly less competition now.

My only opponent now is Yellow Devil, and I don't think Knux's MM5WAVX is going to be winning.

But still, I'm certainally not planning on dropping this now. Especially after the massive texture work I've been doing.

Imageshack. There is nothing wrong with that. If someone could edit the "https://" part out of the URL used in the image code and replace it with "http://" your browser would not complain about it.

I went and tried finding a scan from Mega Man Gigamix Vol. 1 with Mega Man saying "Thank you so much!" but I couldn't find one. But thanks for telling me how to fix it!

Just a reminder that there is only 3 days left for the competition.

Entries will no longer be accepted starting on the 13th in PST. In other words, you have until the end of Friday.
Failure to do so will result in being listed on the WALL OF SHAME.

I've always wanted to be infamous, can I take back my entry so I never submitted anything?

Other than that, the Wall of Shame is a long wall which has the name of people who have failed us most deeply (*cough*that guy*cough*).
So, are these gonna be in 3B?

Only one map out of each the four categories will make it in (probably Yellow Devil's and not mine for the Wave Man category unfortunately).

Is everyone going to get feedback on their maps when it's done? I'd really like to know how to improve my future maps.

Honestly, even though I know I still stand a snowball's chance in hell of winning, I'm eternally glad I signed up for this competition. The feedback I got throughout it taught me in a single map what is good and what is bad for map design.

I would actually like to hear Ivory's opinions on the maps as well. He is generally the first person I go to for advice, but since he's the host of the competition, I could not do that.

THIS. THIS SO VERY HARD.

Personally I also think this competition turned out leagues better than the previous map/weapon compos. I think Messatsu described it as a "co-op-petition" because everyone was helping each other out like a big mapping family, heh heh. I can't speak for everyone who entered but personally I had a blast, and though my chances of victory are small I still feel incredibly proud of my work.

EDIT: I made a video of Linnie's map as part of my mid-stage critique. If you want something similar, let me know after the compo ends and I'll be glad to give you a review of your own. If you even care. Marginally. Or something.

Because the 3 stages here were objectively the worst of the core maps. We were striving to only include maps that weren't opinionated bad, they were maps that were for the most part, avoided/not looked forward to/etc. Top Man was added to even it to 4 categories due to being on the bland side and being a map Mike wouldn't mind seeing replaced. Maybe future there will be another mapping contest for another batch of core maps deemed in need of help, but the next competition I run is probably going to be a weapon compo to break up all the mapping ones. After all, it gets into grey territory with opinionated bad map vs objectively bad maps.

Sorry about the lack of a map, but I managed to screw up two separate deadlines, thinking that this one was due to end on the 20th. Meanwhile, I rushed to get something else done by yesterday, not realizing that wasn't due for another week.

You'd think I would keep better track of these things. Best of luck to the other contestants.

Hey all you Mega Man fans! You ready to hear details about the competition?

Cool, because I sure am! Due to an annoying week of making all these maps work together in one package, mostly textures and all.
The testing will be done this Sunday at 11:00 AM PST (or 1PM or 2PM in the timezones that a bulk of the community live in). Unlike the CTF Compo, there will be no mappers only testing, as DM needs people and some of the people who mapped will not be around to get a decent number of people.

A Skype chat will also be available for the mappers for voice chatting, talking about the competition and for receiving the download link sooner than the public so you guys get first claim to getting into the server before it fills up. If you don't have Skype, then that's fine n dandy as well. Just let me know and I'll provide the download link via PM instead.

Otherwise, the link will be posted in this thread on the front page. There is no plans for myself to record any footage (because my computer sucks too much to do online and record), but anyone else is more than welcomed to record compo footage.

Gameplay Info:
24 players max (not including spectators)
30 Frags
Deathmatch

Now how is judging going to work for this thing? There won't be voting per say, we're trying something different this time. In the evening of Sunday, I will be creating 4 threads for each category. The public will be allowed to vote in it and post any comments they wish. This will be opened for one week at max, but can close sooner depending on if voting and opinions on the maps die down enough. Afterwards, the MM8BDM Dev Team will discuss the voting to decide which maps get in. In the event this explodes into hell, then voting will be solely in Mike and my hands.

So any questions? Comments? Concerns? If so let me know, if not see you Sunday.

MM8BDM is not officially moving over to the new Zandronum until v3b, the servers will remain in Version 1.0. So just use the older doomseeker? Mess will be hosting the server fyi. Alternately, the more annoying method would be to provide the IP here and use MM8BDM's manual connector. I'll talk to Mess in the morning to figure this out.

It's really hard to pick a Spring map. Kapus, Linnie, and Shade all made good maps. I kinda disliked Messatsu's map, as it didn't feel good. And then we get to KORBY'S MAP.

Blinding textures, big bland flat area, lack of weapons, bouncy catwalk, etc.

No offense, but I don't like it at all.

.. Also, YD wins wave for me.

Because its totally a good idea to judge based on sprites of actors rather than layout and weapons isn't.

Post by: CutmanMike on July 21, 2013, 08:38:38 PM
Here's my general thoughts on the maps. I'll disregard any online issues assuming they can be fixed later.

BURST MAN MAPS

Mendez - Really good map structure, 3d floor usage was just about right I think. I think it's obvious the Eddie section just doesn't need to be there, or that difficult to get eddie and trying to get around it just breaks the flow of the map. Would recommend just sealing it off or having something simpler there. Other than that, good work!

Fyone - I enjoyed this map a whole lot except the parts that reminded me of the old burstman map. Every time I ended up at the water section I was just like "ugh". The original areas are really good though, just a shame my vanilla maps have TAINTED this a little bit!

SmashBroPlusB- The raising/lowering of the water in this map seems to be the highlight (transparent water 2 gud) in this one and it works pretty well to an extent, but the outdoor section is lacking in polish (maybe because of the 3d floors?). Also being stuck floating on the purple water really makes you vulnerable, I can imagine people not wanting to even go in there and that's tricky to do with those tight catwalks.

SPRING MAN MAPS

Kapus - The map flows well the springs are mostly there as alternative ways to get around which is nice. The wall bouncing mechanic is a little tricky at first but after a minute or so it wasn't a problem. Another great Kapus map for the books.

Linnie - The general layout of this map is pretty good, but some of the details kind of break the flow. The springs are tucked away which makes it harder to utilize them sometimes. There's some texturing issues here and there too which I'm not too bothered about, except in this case it made it difficult to see when certain walls began and ended.

Shade Guy - Overall a really decent map. I can't really fault anything here, again the springs are just there as alternative ways to get around. Good job duder!

Messatsu - A very interesting layour with some really artsy 3d floor stuff going on here (the thin floors remind me of goldeneye for some reason... anyone else? no?). My only nag is that a lot of the areas look similar, and the fault of that is spring man himself. If only spring man had more colours to use...

Korby - Erm... Feels like a void map like air man or something, but for spring man?

WAVE MAN MAPS

Beed - I love the flow of this map a whole lot. The wave bike section doesn't get in the way and isn't too open to stall games either. Nothing bad to say here!

Yellow Devil - A lot of people complained about the indoor section of this one but I thought it was really interesting, I never got lost and it seemed flow better than any vertical map I attempted. Only problems I had were that I never really felt the need to go on the wavebikes ever, and getting back into the main area was kinda tricky sometimes. Also I think the steam shooters could do with shooting more often, having to wait for them often got me killed!

Knux - Apparently everyone has played a version of this somewhere but I went in with an open mind. It's very flat and trying to get some of the weapons is really difficult. I don't think I ever wanted to go on the wavebikes just cause how hard it was to survive.

TOP MAN MAPS

Reidakk - This one has a very Arena feel to it, kind of like the old Top Man map. In that aspect there's not too much to say, there's a lot of higher up segments that I feel won't come in to play very often due to the flat nature of the map.

Rozark - Now this map feels like a classic doom deathmatch level. The flow is great. I don't have much else to add! I likes it!

SmashBroPlusB - This is a very crowded map with a lot of melee weapons, which did make it very hectic and fun in a niche way. I replacing a core map though, I dunno.

Copy Robot - Another flattish arena-esque map that MM3TOP seemed to characterize. This one is okay, the flow is a bit awkward here and there like that massive spike floor (maybe should just be a pit) and spinning top you have to wait for to climb a ledge.

I know some of these are a bit bare bones but honestly some maps I just felt they were... good. I don't like nitpicking and things like weapon layouts can always be tweaked so I tend not to focus on them much. I think this is a sign everyone is improving so well done everyone who entered. See you next competition! MM6CEN YOUR TIME IS COMING!
Title: Re: SBWT Mapping Competition (Public pack released!)
Post by: Balrog on July 21, 2013, 08:41:51 PM
I only got to play the Wave Man maps. Beed's just felt sort of meh, but I only got in at the tail end of that. YD's map seems well-designed, and I really like how it's designed with Water Wave in mind, but the fact that wavebikes don't crash and are pretty much an inventory item to keep you from dying in the water with no other changes sucks a lot of the fun out of the map; it just doesn't feel like MM5WAV. Knux's keeps the wavebikes, so that's a plus, but the water is basically an adjunct under a regular map; the two don't flow together at all, and trying to use the wavebikes will most likely result in death by crashing into the supports for the "real" map. As Mike noted, it's also flat as hell.

My vote goes to YD, but only if the wavebikes and the water area are revised to provide more risk vs. reward. Otherwise, I vote to keep MM5WAV the way it is.

I wonder why no one is hosting this in Best Ever yet. It would be great to, specially because 1.1.1 now fixed the whole Z Position Predction issue (The issue was that you would seem to be grounded if your speed was changed while you were midair or sometimes while interacting with other actors on a linedef bridge).

EDIT: Also, another good aspect of this Z Prediction fix is that you will no longer feel like you are jittering on ladders.

Hey all you Mega Man fans! Are you ready to find out which maps are being accepted in?

It was a tough week, to figure out which maps held the most potential in being the best for the core. After polling the community, listening to the opinions of the various mappers and MM8BDM Dev Team members, I have compiled all the scores into a tally so see which maps had the most weight on them.

Before I go into that, I'll just take a moment to let everyone know exactly how I was judging the competition maps. My main two points I was looking for in the map were:
1. Layout Potential. Which map had the best offering. Weapons, textures, minor layout tweaks, all those things were something that could be handled after a map has been accepted into the core.

2. How well does the Robot Master weapon work in this stage? This is a big one, a core Robot Master stage should offer a valid use their own weapon in their own stage. And as such, the final judgements kept this in consideration.  Not much else to it, if the weapon could work well on their own stage, it held advantage over a map that did not use it too well.

Ultimately however, we ended up with a lot of strong entries and making a choice of one of each category was never an easy feat. Mostly in the Wave and Spring categories which had neck to neck competition. But I'm sure everyone is excited to see the choices, so let's get on with that~

The maps that are gaining acceptance into the core:

Top Man: MM3TOP4 - Copy Robot
Wave Man: MM5WAV1 - Beed
Burst Man: MM7BUR1 - Mendez
Spring Man: MM7SPR3 - Shade Guy

Congratulation you four! Don't think it's over for those maps yet, we still have plenty of work to do to get them ironed out.

Now, we're done yet Mega Man fans, who won the medal?
As I said before, this one was truly difficult. We had so many strong entries that choosing one map from each category was no easy feat. The chosen map was based on the grounds of: Which map had the strongest feeling of "this just works". It didn't need to be perfectly done, just that it felt right, it worked out well.

The following map was the one that felt the most strongest of all entries. The one that provided the strongest feeling of being a diamond ready to come out of the rough.
So congratulations...

Finally, there is one other person I feel should get a mention, and that is Linnie. Linnie I know you're new here, and you're new to mapping. But my gosh, was your first work brilliant for a first map, and your second map is beyond the average for someone so new. I would like to take a moment to point out to inspiring mappers to take after Linnie's example. He asks for help, he's receptive to criticism, he doesn't give up and he tries hard. Believe me, they are good traits to have. Shade Guy started out much the same way as Linnie, and he ended up as one of the communities top mappers.

So to those of you who didn't get accepted, don't fret about it. Every entry was strong in its own way and everyone did a good job. I hope to see these maps fixed up and used in other projects, don't let them go to waste just because you didn't get into the core! Korby excluded because that was only a half done map!!!

Alright you Mega Man fans, see you next time~!

Whoo hoo!

Yellow Devil, I hope your map finds a new home somewhere, and Knux, you should replace MM5WAVX with your new one.

And all in all, congratulations to everyone else who's maps were chosen, especially to you, Mendez!

BB and I both predicted that Shade Guy would win, and had this pictured prepared for the results.

Kind of funny that BB ended up winning instead. Congrats.

Congrats to the winners, this was fun to play online. I haven't had such an absolute blast playing DM of all things in forever!

Now, back into absence mode...
I hope Copy's map becomes more playable than it is right now. Too many hazards, aye.

Mendez's map has a glitch:

On some occasions, I was able to climb up the corner of this wall, but on others I couldn't. I think it's related to the walls of the purple water room directly below.

Speaking of the purple water, playing the map with Chaos Generator breaks the purple water completely.

I really think Frostman deserves a new level someday. His current map is too small for my tastes.

Edit: Crap, didn't realize how much of a bump this was.
The new maps are enjoyable, though.

Small map =/= Bad map

I don't think he meant small as much as a little too cramped on the non-snowboard sections. If you were walking backwards whilst fending off an approaching enemy, it would be fairly difficult to navigate yourself.

The snowboards automaticly send you straight forward, aka send you the way you are facing. Also, it is easy enough to NOT fight around the snowboards, really.

You were never intended to do any serious battles on the snowboards. The snowboard section used to be much bigger during v3 development. However, it sucked to play on, so it changed to the current more playable snowboard sections.

My point was that

the non-snowboard sections
are relatively difficult to fight on with the cramped nature and various pits.

I do agree it's a bit tricky to fight on those walkways with the pits under them

didn't Frost Man's stage have fences in it or something

why not surround the outer wall with fence but leave the inner wall not blocked for jumping shortcuts / falling off and dying anyway

I tried the 4 maps, my favorite is maybe MM4wav, i have really a good feelint like "omg, im in mm5 waveman stage in 3D!" XDD
So, i can imagine this music in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOPz3HRuC_w (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOPz3HRuC_w)

The others are awesome too !! Topman and the spins, Burstman and the water physic and platforms bombs!, springman  and the cube who can shoot you...

The 4 maps are really like the one in the mm games.... :')

Frostman map can have a good potential too! (not stoneman map I think T_T)
