Title: General Media Discussion
Post by: Ivory on August 11, 2013, 06:58:38 PM
This a thread for talking about what you are watching right now. Whether it be anime, movies, cartoons, etc feel free to mention it here!

If this thread consistently booms with activity, then I'll place in a forum for it, otherwise this is just a test run.

So I'll begin. I really hate most TV shows nowadays and I'm not big into movies, but I do watch anime. I've recently been watching:

1) Rozen Maiden, Träumend, Ouvertüre and Rozen Maiden 2013 (the latter is airing right now). I absolutely love the first 3, truly is a classic anime series. the 2013 reboot has been pretty bad so far  (Ep 6 of 13). Granted it did abandon everything the anime did and followed the manga instead. But jeez, if the manga is as bad as the 2013 anime that adapts from it, then I infinitely prefer the direction the original Rozen Maiden and sequels went. Really wish the anime got a third season for a proper conclusion. In any case, the 2013 reboot aside, this has been my most favorite watch since Madoka.

2) Kiniro Mosaic. A cute slice of life anime about a British girl who transfers to japan to go to school with a girl who stayed with her in England during a homestay. Very cute and adorable and a good watch for when I need something calm and adorable. Also Japan apparently has hair colors in every color of the rainbow except yellow. In any case, as someone who gets easily bored with slice of life anime, this one is pretty great and makes me want to rewatch every episode.

3) I also recently watched Accel World. A very good anime, I enjoyed it greatly.

Been watching Phineas and Ferb recently. Just finished season 1, and it's been a nice watch so far. I'm a fan of lampshade-hanging humor, so it's been pretty amusing.

As for movies, I've been watching a lot of Studio Ghibli stuff lately. I'm a big fan of the studio, so I've just been looking through a list of their works and picking out stuff that interests me. The latest one I watched was...The Cat Returns, I think? A story about a girl who is transformed into a cat and forced into an arranged marriage with the "prince of cats." It was a nice, funny, zany movie. I was rather surprised at the goofy tone of the story, as most other Ghibli movies tend to be a little bit more grounded and serious. It was extremely enjoyable, though, and is probably one of my favorites from Ghibli.

I'm not much of a TV person and I hate watching movies. There are a few exceptions, though. I'll watch anime once in a while if someone encourages I check it out. I watched a bit of Urusei Yatsura but tired of it after a few episodes. Later on, fueled by nostalgia, I watched the entirety of Code Lyoko series in about a week or two. That show is my childhood.

I don't care what any of you say, I still enjoy the Pokemon anime.

Been rewatching the entirety of the anime Rune Soldier (If you've never heard of it it's pretty funny, you should check it out.)

Do Lets plays count? Because if so, I have been watching a playthrough of Stair Fax TemperaturesStar Fox Adventures by MasaeAnela and a Playthrough of Jet Set Radio Future by Thelegendofrenagade. Also I have been watching SD (Superior Defense) Gundam Force, a show I have not seen nor remembered since I was young.

1) Breaking Bad
Currently the best series on tv right now, I absolutely love it. It's the best example of recession-era television, considering it's all about a man struggling to make ends meet for his family after he's gone. Walt will have to get out of the me- I mean, money business soon if he wants to throw his brother off his trail. Fun fact: Walt's brother is a member of the Drug Enforcement Association. Truly, the last half of this season will be amazing.

2)Portlandia
(click to show/hide)
It's a beautiful exaggeration of everything that makes Portland unique. Feminist bookstores, adult hide-and-seek leagues, and Portland-organic chickens. It's one of the things I'm trying to watch entirely on Netflix, aside from a couple of other movies and stuff. Speaking of movies...

3)Drive
(click to show/hide)
A REAL HUMAN BEING. AND A REAL HERO.

I've been very indecisive with the things I'm watching. A few months ago I started checking out a bunch of random anime in search of one that interested me enough to watch, and settled on Scrapped Princess. It's a fairly good anime, I think I left off at around Episode 9-11. I don't remember. Eventually I started watching something else which I don't remember, and later ended up watching Tales of Symponia - The Animation. THAT, was good. I finished that already though, and watched it again with my brothers.

Then, for nostalgia purposes, I ended up going back and watching Sonic X from the beginning. I passed 40 episodes, and surprisingly found it better than I remembered. (Of course, the last time I watched the first two seasons of Sonic X were a long time ago--Some episodes I hadn't even seen in Japanese.) Chris wasn't nearly as annoying, which surprised me the most. However, he had his moments. And I sort of got unmotivated to continue as I drew closer to his whiniest point, although the main thing that discouraged me was that I couldn't find any more episodes on Youtube at the time.

And finally, for more nostalgia purposes, I was lead to Kirby of the Stars. Both this and Sonic X were part of my late childhood. Kirby however, I had much more fun watching. I'm around episode 23 and still going. I'll probably go back and finish the other shows I ditched some time.

Things I am actively watching:

- Urusei Yatsura: I just really like the characters. I am less than halfway through and mostly just watch a whole stack of episodes every now and then.
- Akai Koudan Zillion: An anime based on SEGA-made light guns. Cheesy 80s sci-fi with cliché plotlines and cliché characters all over the place. But I like it. And the soundtrack just rocks.
- Walulis sieht fern: The best German TV show right now. It is not currently running, but there will be new episodes in September. Very fun to watch.

Things I sometimes watch more or less passively:

- Old seasons of NCIS. I especially love all the parts where they use computers simply because of how stupidly nonsensical it is at times. But I do like it for whatever reason.
- The Fairly Oddparents. It is so hilariously bad. It is like playing Saxton Hale mode with Chaosgenerator. I love it because of how horrifyingly dumb it is.

So, What I'm watching?
Most recently I got into the South Park series, which is a show none of you should watch.
But, before then, i watched High School of the Dead, a crappy anime with nothing but Fan-service. And, before that, I was really into Dead Man Wonderland. Which, is an anime I truly loved. too bad it got canned around episode 12. thing is, both HOTD and DMWL both ended on episode 12.

I'm also (on and off) watching Soul Eater. kinda weird anime if you ask me.

Ivory said it's fine to talk about manga as well, so...

I've begun to read Soul Eater. It's quite hilarious and the pacing of the story is neat so far. But man, is that first chapter sure was extremely long (which is great!)

I am still watching Spongebob to this day, the older episodes i watched as a kid are still as hilarious as ever, most of the newer ones aren't too funny but there are certainly still some good ones. I reeeeaaaalllllyyyy need to go and continue watching full metal alchemist, its my first anime I'm taking upon myself to finish, but I never really felt like going back and watching it. Don't get me wrong its still good and all, but I have other things I want to do. Other than that, if i happen to be flipping through channels when i have nothing to do and find Regular show or Adventure Time on I'll give it a watch, and that's really about it

Also watching Watamote.

I've finished watching all the episodes of Baccano, and now I am currently watching Attack on Titan and Trigun with my brother.

They are all great anime, and I would recommend watching them if you are into action/battle anime.

Also Abridged Titan and the extra official Titan specials are also pretty funny as well, but I wouldn't recommend watching them until you watch some episodes of Attack on Titan at least. The manga may also be worth a read too, but I haven't read them myself.

It's pretty popular, the animation is nice at least.

(But really aside from that it's pretty basic and predictable in my opinion.  Not bad, not at all, just not deserving of all the AOTY OMG stuff).

I'm watching the one about the guy with the multiple choice disorder, and the one about the guy who wanted to become a hero but didn't so now he works in a store.

Really heavy on fanservice in the latter.  Wish it wasn't honestly because it detracts from what I'm assuming is supposed to be a romantic comedy about a Could-be-Hero and the Demon Lord's daughter falling inlove.

Ugh why do I watch this stuff.  So cliche.
Title: Re: What are you watching/reading?
Post by: Ceridran on October 27, 2013, 01:35:38 PM
I know what the first one is, but not the second one.

The first one is "My Mental Choices are Completely Interfering with my School Romantic Comedy."

If you don't like a series, feel free not to finish it. I really haven't gone far into Attack on Titan because I can't really enjoy it, ( Eren is really annoying pls nerf ) though I might have to get up to Episode 5 to be sure about that.
Title: Re: What are you watching/reading?
Post by: Deviddo on October 27, 2013, 02:59:57 PM
The second one is something along the lines of, "I Couldn't Become a Hero, So I Got A Job!"  The animation on it is nice atleast, and uh...

Admitably I fall for just about any dumb animu love story.

Wander Over Yonder looks great, (I can tell from staring at it for less time than Adventure Time also I don't hate Adventure Time to death anymore but still not a fan) and you should definitely check it out if you lost hope in western animation.

Oh, and it's from Craig McCracken, who made Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, and is married to Lauren Faust, the director of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, and also does some kind of storywriting related thing in Wander Over Yonder .

I recently got back to playing Metroid Prime recently and done a lot of things in it.

Like:
-getting some missile upgrades and energy tanks
- beat up some pirates and take their thermal visor
- blow up a giant ice/rock monster

Hey, so Gosick is actually good.

If you are not watching Gurren Lagann, you are seriously missing out. (http://www.crunchyroll.com/gurren-lagann)
so much bias

TFP, I suggest moving this to the other thread. A misread name, yes?

Looking at the above posts, I finally understand why I feel disconnected from everyone here.

I don't watch anime of ANY kind, with the exception of Kirby Right Back At Ya, which I'm not sure if it even counts.
Go watch some Ghibli movies.

To be fair, I myself do not care whatsoever about anime.

I don't like it, I don't dislike it. I just have no interest in it.

Welp, thanks to Ceridran, I have finally watched my first non-game-related anime.
It was that "Nichijou" one.
I really enjoyed it. There's just something about it, that makes it a step up above most of the things I end up seeing on TV nowadays.
That, and I kinda like the art style too. (brb, making another avatar)

Speaking of TV shows I enjoy, my most favourite TV show ever, Doctor Who, is turning 50 tomorrow!
Too bad none of the older Doctors will be in it.

In fact, you know what? If it weren't for Doctor Who, my mum and dad would have never met, which means I wouldn't exist, or if I did, I'd probably be a completely different person!

I mean, clearly it's a quality TV show if it helps people come into existence.

Watched Chobits yesterday. It's hilarious.

From the generic-catchy-cheesy OP to the wacky hijinx of the episodes themselves it's amazing romantic comedy, even though it seems to be intended as some kind of serious love story. Watch Episode 4 with the English dub for best results.

Hope it's okay to bump this.

So, for those who finished Kill La Kill, there's going to be a 25th episode! (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-03-28/unaired-kill-la-kill-episode-story-teased-in-video) ... in September 2014. ; n ;

Meanwhile Golden Time was a slightly more child friendly School Days :^)

I forgot what episode of Kill la Kill I was on, (20 or 21) but I've heard the "last" episode is very.. meh. Of course, everyone has a different perspective.

So.

I like Star Trek. (No duh)

I've seen 8 out of 12 films of it so far. (1-6, 11 and 12)

My favorite, in terms of what I enjoy the most, I haven't really decided yet. I think it's a tie between II and III.

My favorite is also Star Trek V. Not because it's the one I like watching the most, but because it's the most fascinating.

So lately I've been watching up on this Kill la Kill thing, trying to see what is so good about it. currently on episode 15 atm. So far the only things that had me interested were mutant ryuko, and shackle and blade regelia mk2 (or 3 in blade's case) other than that it's been kind of meh. Meanwhile, I have also been re-watching episodes of kinikuman and ultimate muscle (which stills make me smile)

Was going to say this while responding to a forum game but I moved this comment~

I wanted to say that in my opinion, Levi is one of the worst characters in AoT, next to Eren and some others. I despise emotionless characters, because they're there for.. .. What are they there for, again?

Because the manga has more material, obviously there will be a second AoT season, but I don't think I'l care about it this time around.

I tried roleplaying with the database of a magic powered starship that's been miniaturized into a semi-humanoid form and is fused with a black hole and parts of the ship. It had no emotion. It was the worst thing I've tried. It only consisted of "destroy anyone I see". I eventually killed the roleplay because I caused a city to go into super recontrol mode and spew gas all over the place.

Did you really just call Levi emotionless?
Have you seen like...any scene with him in it?

I believe it's the very first time we have an extensive visit with him where it's pointed out that he is a neat freak who does not like being dirty. Not five minutes later, he grabs the bloodied, mangled hand of a dying soldier and tells him that he did not die in vain. The man dies while Levi is talking to him, and he asks someone nearby if they thought he heard all of it.

The man does not always express his emotions, but it's not hard to see what he's feeling, especially near the end of the show. If you want someone who is "emotionless," it'd be better to point out that Erwin is much harder to read than Levi, but even he shows basic emotions throughout the show.

Soooo, I finished Serial Experiments Lain.

It's.... one of those philosophical anime that require you to think, per se. If you're expecting tons of action or moe high school ventures, then it's not for you. I personally think that I'll rewatch it soon since I feel there's a lot to it that I missed (not that it really has a central plot, I mean, it also probably does! It's really up to the viewer as how they interpreted the show). @____@;

Up next is Free! and then Mawaru Penguindrum after that.

My dad owns one, but it's hooked up to his computer, so I can't use it.

I had VHS Spongebob/Simpsons going a few hours ago, complete with "Own it now on DVD!" praise before the actual feature. As a person who doesn't regularly watch TV/tapes/DVDs/whatever you kids are watching these days, it felt nostalgic but hated at the same time.

Better question: Do you own a VHS Rewinder machine.. thing.

Yes. There is a small TV right next to me that plays tapes. Built in, of course.

I was going to post this in WWW, but I think it's just as relevant here because well... it's a classic anime reboot. Or so I think. I can't really tell with all the Japanese in it, but it was posted one day ago, so... anyway. I used to watch this years ago, and I'm glad it's becoming relevant again.

Yes, it is. ; v ;

I really recommend watching the original Sailor Moon with English subs as the DIC Entertainment one pretty much ruins the whole story of the show. I got quite emotional at the end.

The reboot will take its story from the Sailor Moon manga series,so that's kinda different.

Been binge watching beast wars and mystery incorporated on Netflix and I have some things to say

1): Can't believe how good MI is, I watched some of it before when it was on air, but going through it I have seem to liked it.
2): Beast Wars is still good, animation is good even to this day, the characters are still the best (silverbolt, inferno, and waspinator are top three in my book, but they all have their characteristics), the jokes and references are quite nice and make me giggle at times.
3): if you have spare time to kill, go give them a watch. you won't regret it.

Now on to binge watching Justice League Unlimited, once again
