Title: MM8BDM Mapper's Expo [Aug/Sep 2013 - Fortress Stage]
Post by: Hallan Parva on August 11, 2013, 11:08:30 PM
Welcome to the Mega Man 8-Bit Deathmatch Mapper's Expo!

Based on the popularity and enjoyment of the SBWT Mapping Competition (http://www.cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=5754), the idea was to have a semi-regular get-together for mappers to have fun, learn new tricks, gain experience, play with tilesets they haven't really messed with before, or just to have a generally good time. Every two to three months, a general theme will be chosen, with its own selection of requirements for textures, size, or actors. There will also be an Item Of The Day which must be placed in the map. Think of this like the secret ingredient in Iron Chef, where each team has to use that ingredient in their meal. Other than that, you're free to do whatever you like with your maps, and you're more than welcome to collaborate with others to improve your maps.

The theme this time is "Team Fortress". No, we're not talking about going invisible or eating lots of deli meat. Instead, think of the various castles and fortresses across the Mega Man series of games. The idea is to make a new Wily stage... or Cossack stage... or Mr. X stage, or anything final boss material. Yes, even non-Classic bosses like Sigma are fair game.

Like any good event, there are some rules you have to follow:

Other than that, you're free to do whatever your heart desires and your mind can think of. The deadline is September 16th at 12:00 midnight PST (3AM EST). Though you could technically submit an older map and I would be none the wiser, the general idea is to make a new map or to retool and highly improve an older map; "remix" it, if you will. Please submit your maps through Cutmail or Skype. All maps collected before the deadline will be put together in an Expo Pack for immediate download once the event is finished, unless opted out of by request. Any inclusion to other map packs or collaborations is solely up to the mapper(s) in question, and will never be performed or implied without permission.

Have fun, and get to mapping! We officially start August 12th, due to the release of 8BDM v3b.

I'm up for this. It would be nice to make some more maps and talk with other mappers.

Well

I don't think I'll be that good at all at this but I suppose I could try at least something.

So uh

Joining for great justice.

Might want to put a little list detailing which maps the mappers are partaking in to avoid the stepping on of toes.

Also, just want to ask, can you do another map after completing one?

I didn't put a list of maps because I didn't know what everyone was planning to do. Also, even with the same stage, you could have completely different layouts, or you might want to use tilesets from multiple fortress stages in a single map (for example, MM2DW2X by Beed28 uses 2 Wily's tiles from sub stages 2, 3, and 4). Or, you could be using Mega Man 3 tiles and decide halfway through that your map would look rad as hell with Mega Man 5 tiles instead.

Also, you can do more than one stage, there's no problem with that. However, I'm going to follow in the vein of SBWT and advise that you stick with a single map until its completion before trying to tackle a second map.

I'm not entering this, but don't forget the unused textures pack. It has all of the tiles from the Wily stages that were never made in the core.

Have fun, everyone. I wouldn't be able to enter this even if I wanted to due to the amount of work I have on me. Not to mention college classes beginning on Wednesday for me.

so I got started (http://cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=253016#p253016)

I thought that custom wall texture would look bad but it actually renders rather nicely

Could you give the textures more variety? It seems to be one of those blinding maps.

Posting a general reminder that this ends in less than two weeks.

Get to crackin' on those maps!

I'm gonna admit now my map isn't going to be good. But with any luck the ideas I use will be able to make a better version in the future.

Blaze and I were literally the only two people who remembered to not scramble on the last day of the expo. So I feel like being a nice guy, partially because I'm actually bothering to play White 2 for once, partially because I want to see everyone's maps, and partially because I have a mafia game I'm trying to run. Deadline extended to Monday. Happy Halloween.

Mind it being late Monday? I just gotta add items to mine which shouldn't take too long after I get home from work.
