Title: What's your favorite Zelda game ?
Post by: Chme on September 06, 2013, 06:12:18 AM
We all have a Favourite Zelda game, so, what's your ?

I've put together the oracles games because they have many common thing, and thus if you like one you probably like the other, and I didn't put Four Sword because it 's too short to be a complete Zelda game.

And DON'T say Face of evil, Wand of Gamelon or Zelda's Adventure

This except replace Minish Cap with LttP. LttP is one of the first games I've ever played and it holds a special place in my heart as such.

I haven't played the oracle games, but I love me some TttP.  I'll have to check those out sometime.

Minish was okay, but I just got tired of it and dropped it for some reason.  Not sure why.

LTTP. All the way.

I hope it's pseudo-sequel on the 3DS is as good as the original.

Definitely A Link to the Past, if only because I have memorized the entire game. Seasons/Ages come pretty close, too.

I wish there was an option for Ocarina of Time 3D but whatevs. I prefer that because its over all more pleasing to the eye. and Link looks more like the Link I'm familiar with and not someone trying to recreate him with N64 technology. Also Iron boots being an item and not a different pair of boots you have to pause and unpause every 3 seconds for, and for some reason the game feels more smoothly controlled then the original, but i don't know why.

Gotta go with Wind Waker simply because you could just sail to random islands and do whatever you want if you get tired of the main story

And the main story is really good

I enjoyed playing the handheld version of four swords with my sis.
Curse that plant boss.

However Phantom Hourglass wins because it was my first and also because you can drive a ship.

A ship

The first.
I played the original, LttP, LA and the Singleplayer version of Four Swords.
Basically, LttP is incredibly tedious and becomes less and less enjoyable over time. And the music is really not good either, considering it is a SNES game by Nintendo themselves.
Oh and Turtle Rock is the worst dungeon ever made.
LA is fun .. but I got bored of it once i beat the 6th dungeon and stopped playing it. And it is also quite tedious to go to where you want.
Four Swords is just ... meh.

The original Zelda however is more like a slightly more linear version of Metroid in terms of structure. And I really like that. The gameplay is good and the items are fun to use. To me it is the only really good official Zelda game.

The first sentence is purely your opinion, and I respect that. On the second one though, you're completely biased. Saying that something is not good because a certain someone made it is blatant discrimination and I won't stand for that bullshit. If instead, you were to say that you didn't like the soundtrack because it didn't really appeal to your tastes or something among those lines, that would be perfectly fine.

Also (and this is completely unrelated to the above argument), I can't understand how someone would enjoy getting lost in the first Zelda. I was hardly patient enough to get all the Triforce pieces, and that's where the game ended for me. Right now, I'm playing Metroid II: Return of Samus on my 3DS, and all it manages to do is make me fall asleep after half hour. All I'm saying is, to each their own, but... "Dayum son" if you can withstand all of that and simultaneously like it.

The Wind Waker. It had a very compelling story that was not detracted from by technical limitations as I found to be the case in OoT and MM, and more compelling than later ones like SS (though I did like SS's story) and TP.

I was more immersed into the gameplay with TWW than with any other title. Also, I loved the endgame of TWW.

Unoriginaly, my prefered is A link to the past.
That's not my first Zelda, but I'd fallen in love for this game after played it, for a lot of reasons: Graphics, Soundtrack, Story, the parallels worlds...
Otherwise, I realy like the oracles, Awakening (that ballad of the wind fish is still stuck in my mind), Twilight Princess, Ocarina of time...

To be honest, Knux, I think she's saying that she didn't expect Nintendo to have such low quality music in her opinion. I'd be surprised if I found a Nintendo-made game that had terrible music.
Title: Re: What's your favorite Zelda game ?

I found the original Zelda tedious.  Far too much time gets lost searching for where the hell to go, and just wandering around using candles on every bush everywhere is hell.  It's a game that is only tolerable at all with a guide.

NemZ, the fact that you don't have anyone saying you where to go is why I like the first Zelda: like in Metroid games, you have to explore everywhere to find the palaces and items.
But I understand that can be tedious for players that prefer the phases more actives

I thought Jabu Jabu's Belly in Ages was the worst dungeon ever. I actually breezed through Skull Dungeon, and I also thought it had the best dungeon music by when I got to the end of the game.

Oh, thank you, Knux. "Worst dungeon" and "Oracle of Ages" are not complete in a sentence without "Jabu Jabu's Belly".

Heck, I would say that Jabu Jabu's Belly is the most annoying Zelda dungeon period if I had played all the games.

I just recently beat The Legend of Zelda. I loved it far more than any other Zelda games I've played (Z2, ALttP, OoT, MM, LA, and TMC, by the way): it surely was the Skyrim of its era.

But it's MUCH faster to systematically check for secrets in Metroid than it is in Zelda, and for the most part the locations of such secrets are better signaled by suspicious stage designs.

In both cases the SNES versions of the games were the best incarnations thereof because it found the perfect balance in guiding the player without forcing, with many completely optional but fun things hidden in odd corners of the map and with sequence breaking a definite possibility in each.

Oh right, I had forgotten about Jabu Jabu's belly. The annoying water lower crap was enough to make you want to tear your hair out.
Ancient ruins in Oracle of Season's was pretty bad too... But Skull Dungeon for me was the hardest because if you died before you could reach the midpoint boss, you had to grind your way through the WHOLE DUNGEON all over again, thanks to how linear it was.

I'm the only one that likes Skyward Sword? ;.;

I liked it because it just seemed a lot more challenging than the other games in terms of combat. The puzzles were a bit creative too. It fully utilized the Wii Motion Plus, and made it very interesting to play. True, the controls locked up a few times, but once I got past it, I really enjoyed the game. Not to mention the best character in all of Zelda, GROOSE.

Skyward Sword had the best dungeons in the entire series. However the filler between the dungeons and the crappy sky overworld really killed the rest of the game for me.

You need this plot coupon? Go collect 20 bear asses (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TwentyBearAsses) for me to prove yourself a hero.

to be perfectly honest

the only times I've played Skyward Sword was: The first time, only a few minutes into the game. The second time, a friend's house.

And it's been sitting on the shelf for 1-2 years or what was it.

I'm considering playing it for real soon. Probably when I beat Superstar Saga which I don't expect to happen for a while. The music is honestly sort of bad.

I guess I'm not the only one who thought Skyward Sword got boring fast, I at least made it to near the end of the game, but I don't care enough to continue. I think the best games in the series were ALTTP,MM,and the Oracle of Ages/Seasons.

Don't know how many of you saw that screenshot I posted of the Hexen Mage doing the Capcom hand. It's the reason I was surprised when I got to the dungeon 4 mid boss in Oracle of Seasons. It's the spitting image of said mage.

And then, it all came to a full circle.

I think A Link Between Worlds is now vying for my top spot against Wind Waker. Interestingly, many of the people I know who have always liked WInd Waker the most are among the biggest fans of A Link Between Worlds.

Technically speaking the game is amazing, at least to my unprofessional eyes and ears. Even with the slider down the visuals are appealing enough to make me not want to warp everywhere. The music is absolutely fantastic everywhere. Especially in a couple of the dungeons - which are, by the way, some of the best handheld dungeons I've played.

Link's Awakening for me. I grew up with that game, so it has a special place in my heart.

...I could never actually get through a Zelda game legitimately. I always got bored halfway through. Except for Link's Awakening, of course.

Yep, I don't know why the Oracles games aren't well-known. They are amazing games, with a lot of good ideas, and an amazing soundtrack too.
And the Subrosian are the best characters I've ever seen.

Edit: Damn, the add of Between Worlds in the pool have reseted it.

I would've been fine if Arin kept Skyward Sword out of that video's discussion... wow, Arin is quite fond of strawman...

I really don't get the fuss over skyward sword, though. My only complaints with it are:
-Fi stating the obvious
-Grinding
-Dousing

I like:
-The motion controls that everyone hates for some reason
-The dungeons
-Zelda being relevant for once and not being a plot device you see only one or two times total
-Groose
-The upgradable item system
-Bomb Bowling (weird echo). Fuck you it was cool
-Everything about the desert section, especially the time anomaly system
-ROBOT PIRATES
-Every boss fight (except the damn giant squid that should've looked a lot more intimidating than that)
-Dynamic combat system
-The story actually got me this time. It was almost as good as Twilight Princess's.

BOOP. On the side note: I changed my favorite to Oracle of Seasons. I really love the way that game improved on Link's Awakening's design.

I think arin is kinda right about the bats(keese) but make it 3D brings more logic in it

First in place
Throw bombs boomerangs and shoot hookshots and arrows In all directions!
With Keese which has to be locked on it Arin was kinda being shitty on that windwaker on he said you had to lock on them en take them out one from one if he just swiped the normal use of the boomerang he could lock on multiple things which also was done in phantom hourglass and spirit tracks
and maybe other... zelda games... that i dont know

Don't get me wrong. I always did think that OoT was overrated, but wow, I never thought someone, especially someone like Arin, to say something like, "THERE'S TOO MUCH WAITING AAAA". Hold on, let me just look back at his tragic wind waker lp, where every time he skips important dialogue, he runs in circles for 3 episodes.
Just a silly opinion, but I lost a lot of respect for Arin after some of his Game Grumps moments

He could have instead talked about other underlying problems with the game, where the overall design is just poor. Such as the water temple or lost woods 2nd visit. Or maybe he could've talked about how hyrule field is just a big empty level hub with nothing that important on it. But no. He just channels his own impatience and complains about chest opening, switch hunting, and defensive enemies.

THEN he goes a step forward and implies that OoT took the series in a negative direction, with skyward sword being the epitome of all bad things zelda. All I can say is: Majora's Mask. That game was a direct improvement from OoT. Yes, the time system turns some people off, but it makes the world feel truly alive. It's the kind of exploration someone like Arin would want, because the world's changes over the 3 days, rewarding you for completing optional objectives that can be solved only through initiative and  searching. But no. Arin hates waiting.

When you're playing with a friend and focusing more on talking to him or her, you tend to absentmindedly go through a game, which ends up in them skipping a bunch of stuff that was important and getting lost. Ross did an AMA a while back where he basically said that he's usually pretty good at video games, but it's hard to focus on playing and talking at the same time, so for the sake of comedy, he talks more.

That being said- I'm also bothered by their ineptitude in vidya games, but I understand why they're doing bad, at least.

Sorry to change the topic, but why hasn't anyone discussed Link Between Worlds thoroughly? In my book, it's a straight-up MASTERPIECE! The dungeons are less of a hack and slash with the occasional bland puzzle like most Zelda games, and you actually unlock new parts to the puzzles as you progress! The items are inventive, and the control is simplistic but not too easy to use so you never screw up, the streetpass is done marvellously, and the bosses..... My GOD the bosses, Moldorm became simple once you figured out how badly the Hammer beats him, Stalbind was creative start to finish, Margomill wasn't too easy, but wasn't rip your hair out, like Moldorm is without using the Hammer on him.
Title: Re: What's your favorite Zelda game ?

the sequelitis is 20% valid complaints
50% "i wasn't part of OoT's target audience"
30% opinions

And his opinions aren't even good. He said Trinexx from ALTTP was a good boss. Making a boss that has a mandatory weakness to a 100% optional and out of the way item is hardly good game design, it's just plain annoying to get that far and get roadblocked because you didn't find that optional item.

However, I think this quote best sums up the video.
Quote
His praise for LoZ seemed odder to me than his criticisms of 3D or object permanence ("The spikes I saw when I entered the room hit me even though I wasn't looking at them?! Horse shit! Not fun!"). LoZ had 0 combat depth, no dungeon variety, no puzzles, minimal dialogue and no story. It's a series of 16 square bullet hell rooms, times 8 dungeons. The enemies and bosses all have the same strategy of "Attack it head on". In half an hour of silly rationales not once does he speak ill of LoZ for any number of perfectly legit reasons. I'm still not even sure if he liked LttP or not; he seems to hate it when he's talking about LoZ but love it when he's talking about OoT.
His disdain for story or dialogue and misconceptions about what a puzzle should be also baffled me. Kill all enemies or bombing a cracked wall is apparently the apex of what we can hope to achieve, and having the player do so dozens of times is totally NOT repetitive and is completely fun. While using the 3D perspective mechanic to navigate and explore a room is stupid and silly. "If only they would make this particular puzzle that I'm describing, despite having just complained about exactly that room in the Shadow Temple earlier.
I don't agree with him because I think his goals for a game are wildly different that what we might expect and his argumentative toolset is flawed.
Honestly though, I wouldn't care too much about the video since as I said earlier, he's not even remotely close to the OoT target audience. I'd rather listen to the opinions and complaints to someone who is actually a fan of those types of games, rather than someone who isn't.

LoZ had 0 combat depth, no dungeon variety, no puzzles, minimal dialogue and no story Yeah okay, that's good.. It's a series of 16 square bullet hell rooms, times 8 dungeons Okay, sure, sure, that's good, maybe a bit too simplified.. The enemies and bosses all have the same strategy of "Attack it head on" Yes, you're right.. In half an hour of silly rationales not once does he speak ill of LoZ for any number of perfectly legit reasons. Because they're not design mistakes, even if they are legit complaints. The game is simple from the ground-level, and that's not bad. Top down with projectiles is not "bullet hell", LoZ barely classifies as a shooter, not sure where someone got that idea. "Attack it head on" feels more natural and daring than "use item to expose weak point", which helps in getting the "adventure feel" point across, but makes battles feel more brute-forced than when using your items to defeat a boss.

If you liked LoZ, Z2:AoL, and ALttP, you were OoT's target audience, and I'm sure taking more into account the opinions of a fanatic of OoT isn't really...fair, is it?
Title: Re: What's your favorite Zelda game ?

I would disagree entirely, OoT was fundamentally a different style of Zelda compared to the previous top-down and side scroller Zelda titles. 2D Zelda and 3D Zelda are different beasts. Some people love the top-down titles more than than the 3D titles. Just because you liked ALTTP, doesn't mean you will enjoy the game in 3D. Because yes, being in 3D is a different target audience than wanting a top-down adventure title.

Twilight Princess was vastly underrated in my opinion, and it's my favorite game overall. Some games, like Skyward Sword and Wind Waker, seemed to drag out at certain parts and that kind of negatively impacted the experiences for me. Twilight Princess had a realistic art style that just clicked with me for some reason. Swinging around on the clawshot was particularly fun for me, although I can't say exactly why it was most fun in Twilight Princess. It was not a difficult game by any means, but it focused on smart play rather than overhyping the control scheme (Wii Motion Plus for Skyward Sword). I am truly surprised that nobody has yet voted for Ocarina of Time.
