Title: Pokemon Showdown!
Post by: Orange juice :l on October 10, 2013, 04:46:46 AM
Because X and Y isn't relevant and Pokemon Online is dead.

Pokemon Showdown (http://pokemonshowdown.com/) is a site where you can instantly build Pokemon teams and find battles with friends or random people. It runs off of Smogon's tiers, so if you don't want to see rain teams or fight thousands of Keldeos or just really want to use Liepard, there's a tier for that.

You can download the client (if you're lame) or play through the website (way better) and there's a number of servers available for play. The main server has a highly active ladder if you feel like testing yourself against the general public, and there's a tournaments channel for player-hosted tournaments that run almost constantly.

And to start the #shotsfired, PS! is pretty much better than PO. PS! has animations, is faster, has a superior teambuilder, and is generally more user friendly.

Anyways, if you've got logs, a favorite set, want to find other players that play your favorite tier, or pretty much anything else, go ahead and post it here.

Personally, I'm quite fond of this OU-Monotype set that brought me up to 2.3k+ rating (provisional, but whatever):

With Gen 6 currently being half-implemented, King Dumb and I decided to make teams that were... less than serious. Our perfectly engineered team is as follows.

After a test run on the OU ladder (In which KD found one of those people- you know, one that had a team full of eeveelutions. On the ladder.), we decided there was only one way this could end.
Ladies and gentlemen, for your viewing pleasure, I present to you: The Ballad of Citizen Snips.

Here's a rather silly yet effective VGC team I built around Slaking, with Alakazam being the other opener:

Of course, you can add/change Pokemon to your heart's content, but I recommend keeping Alakazam and Slaking, as these sets are the most effective at what they do.

What.

I decided I will try this.

I made a team consisting of my 3 main Pokemon from Crystal, and my 3 main Pokemon from Red.

So that means I have Feraligatr, Gyarados, Suicune, Charizard, Haunter, and...... Missingno.

EDIT: AAAAAAAND I just learned that I can't actually do anything.

OH well, I'll just replace that last one with my main from XD or something.

Probably because I based everything off of Gen 1 & 2, instead of Gen 5 or something.

It's not necessarily because of the region from which you pulled your team. When playing online on Pokemon Showdown, just throwing together Pokemon you used in the games doesn't usually work out too well. You have to plan out each team member's role, and put Pokemon together that cover weaknesses, both type-wise and otherwise. Sometimes it means not using your favorites, but building teams around one or two of your favorites can usually work pretty well!

And not to be too imposing, but Blastoise's set is... unique, to say the least. Replace Choice Band (http://www.smogon.com/bw/items/choice_band) with Choice Specs (http://www.smogon.com/bw/items/choice_specs) if you're going to be using special moves (Blastoise isn't made for all out offense either, but surprise is everything. Support Kabutops for life). Additionally, Sand Veil is banned in Smogon Metagames (http://www.smogon.com/bw/banlist/) (At least, it is in Gen 5. Too early to call for Gen 6) along with Kalos 'mons until Gen 6 is fully built into the server.

Of course, anything goes in Custom Games

Yeah, you should be using choice specs Machamp / Garchomp.

Anyway, here's some random battle replays from when I had a day off in my programming class.

Pokemon Showdown has tradition of sorts where players create "leagues", somewhat akin to how the games work. Of course, we decided to make one. Full info's in the pastebin below. Short version is that we'll be using Monotype teams and we'll be taking challenges, and if anybody decides they want to join, we're always looking for more players. Might end up posting this in places that aren't Cutstuff eventually. Full info's in the pastebin below.

That OU team actually looks like it might become a decent OU Monotype Fighting team with a few changes. If you want to run with mons of a single type, there's a tier for that. In OU, it's gonna have some issues being so heavy on Fighting and Psychic.

Yeah, maybe not the best, but they're still being tweaked.
Also there's a Gen 6 alpha for PO, so i might do some battling with the gen 6 team on there.

Your Lopunny has Choice Specs (boosts special moves) and all physical attacks. Plus, fake out and choice items don't play well together anyways. Besides that, Gardevoir's current ability does nothing in single battles, but Trace is pretty good. Synchronize is decent but I'd take Trace any day.

I've given this a whirl with a few friends, it's actually kind of fun.  I don't play very seriously or competitively; most of my teams aren't even classified (I should probably fix that sometime).

Anyways, I saw that you were having League signups and I figured, "Eh, might as well post my OUMonotype Ground team."

(click to show/hide)
(It's themed like a real Gym battle in which every Pokemon on their team has one move in common, which is why they all know Earthquake)

I do also have this Fighting team but it uses Revenankh
So whatever

Blaziken is actually banned in metagames not named Ubers because of its hidden ability, Speed Boost. Besides that, your IVs seem a bit odd- Scrafty's Speed IV is 0 and Blaziken's are 30 - probably a leftover from whatever Pokemon were there before.

But yeah, if you want to give the league a whirl, post your Showdown name and try your teams in action.

I'm personally not a huge fan of Tier Shift because I find it largely arbitrary. And some Pokemon in UU, for example, can become unmatched behemoths in Tier Shift for as a result.

Although I enjoy Monotype Tier Shift for the sole reason that my beloved Porygon2 and Porygon-Z wall and sweep like monsters.

I could've sworn it was specifically Speed Boost Blaziken who was restricted to only Ubers. Banning all Blaziken in general is like saying all Pokemon with Moody are banned even if they don't have Moody.
Title: Re: Pokemon Showdown!
Post by: Orange juice :l on October 23, 2013, 06:41:42 PM
That would be the smart thing to do, but Smogon hates "complex bans" with a passion so they just banned the Pokemon Blaziken altogether, just like they banned the ability Moody.

Thus, the following April Fool's video was made.

Oh, are there any special clauses or restrictions for the Gym Leader teams? Also, what Gen is it?

No clauses here- just standard Gen 5 OUMonotype for league members. We'll probably switch over to Gen 6 once it gets fully implemented, though.

Here's a replay from a VGC match using my gravity team:

The most intense part was definitely the 1v1 near the end. I was able to pull of a clutch rest, which ended with me winning the game.

That Liepard can go fuck himself too, I can't believe I managed to win after all the damage it had done.

I'm a bit concerned about the amount of lag present, especially when someone spectates, where incredibly long lag spikes start occurring (5-7 minutes) and it becomes rather frustrating.

Some Mega Evolutions don't show up because they don't have a full set of custom sprites yet
