However a lot of the popular mods, like the classes mod, do use altfire.

In core? Nope, not at all.
In mods? Plenty.
In classes mods (pretty much all of them), it is a MUST.

i tried to download it but it is incompatible with the latest version. where can i find a version that is compatible with it.

that isnt compatible either. i am however willing to download a version of the game that is compatible with the mod. i found a way to get it to work though but it doesnt work from the skins folder.

It should be compatible. Are you sure you have MM8BDM-V3B?

Skins folder? No no. The only thing that should go into the skins folder are skins. Well also music packs, but never moda.
