Title: Anti-Viruses!
Post by: Dr. Crasger on March 11, 2014, 12:33:57 PM
Recommend an antivirus, ask about an antivirus, is this software really safe, etc.
Here's a thread where we talk about those neat little programs that keep our PCs safe from harm, almost 90% of the time.

What we could talk about couldn't just be about antiviruses, it could also be about anti-malware, anti-spyware-- anything that protects the computer from destructive programs.

God I am terrible with making opening statements...

While I was using XP, I found MalwareBytes AntiMalware to work very well. I had Microsoft Security Essentials too, but.. Eh.

Last year and this year I've been using Norton 360 Gold Edition. I've never had a virus so far, and I know for sure it's protected me from one. It also doesn't bombard me with pop-ups like a lot of anti-virus softwares do.

Yeah I'd recommend it.

Comodo dragon but i bought Malwares Bytes
Firefox (because i like how easy is the firefox dwhelper for all the videos of internet, and you can convert it)
Ghostery
Adblock.

Seconding oj's post. Literally all you need to be safe is avast! and adblock plus. If you still fuck up your computer after that you're doing something very, very wrong.

NoScript is useful if you are willing to put some effort into it.
As an addition to what was said above, of course.

It is kind of tedious at first, though, so it might not be for everyone.

Anyone here heard of USB Disk Security?
It's pretty good against malware transmitted through USBs.

For some reason I don't see a lot about it.

All I can say from experience is, don't use Norton. Ever.

It's overpriced, hardly does anything to protect your computer, is intrusive as a door-to-door Jehovah's witness, and slowwwwwwws your computer down severely in terms of usage and ram.

I happily uninstalled it and put AVG in its place after my credit expired for it. It bugged me every single day as my subscription ran out, even telling me that I'd save gas going to the store to buy the software again if I were to renew my subscription early >.>
Come on, Symantec, it's the 21st century. Nobody goes to the store to buy physical copies of stuff anymore :L

NORTON ANTIVIRUS IS THE BIGGEST PILE OF FUCKING BULLSHIT THAT HAS EVER BEEN ON A COMPUTER THAT I'VE OWNED. PAYING FOR THAT IS THE EQUIVALENT OF PAYING FOR FUCKING AIR, OR PAYING FOR PERMISSION TO USE THE BATHROOM. IF YOU PAID FOR THAT I FEEL SORRY FOR YOU AND YOU SHOULD JUST UNINSTALL IT BEFORE YOUR SUBSCRIPTION ENDS SINCE SPENDING MONEY ON NOTHING IS BETTER THAN SPENDING MONEY ON NORTON. OH YEAH BUT GOOD LUCK UNINSTALLING IT BECAUSE THEY'LL TELL YOU THAT YOU HAVE VIRUSES THAT AREN'T THERE AND BEG YOU TO KEEP IT INSTALLED UNTIL YOU JUST SAY "OH FINE I'LL JUST KEEP YOU ON FOR A WHILE LONGER" AS IT EMBEDS ITSELF IN YOUR COMPUTER. NO, NOT JUST YOUR COMPUTER. NORTON WILL EMBED ITSELF INTO YOUR MIND, NORTON ANTIVIRUS IS A  DEVIOUS MIND CONTROL SCHEME TO LEECH MONEY OUT OF THOSE POOR SOULS THAT BUY A PRE-BUILT COMPUTER FROM WAL-MART THAT IS PRE-INSTALLED WITH NORTON FUCKING ANTIVIRUS.

OH AND THAT BRINGS ME TO ANOTHER BULLSHIT ANTIVIRUS.

MCAFEE IS AWFUL TOO, IF YOU HAVE MCAFEE GET RID OF IT, WINDOWS DEFENDER DOES MORE FOR YOUR COMPUTER THAN THAT TRASH PROGRAM AND THAT'S SAYING SOMETHING. FUCK MCAFEE. AND MOST OF ALL FUCK NORTON.

TL;DR DOWNLOAD AVAST BECAUSE IT'S FREE AND DOES A WAY BETTER JOB.

Okay I'm finished now.

Avast is great because you get to say "shut up avast" whenever it says the virus database is updated.

Would probably always keep that notification on.

Oh man I wish
I tried to uninstall it once and it told me to get the administrator permission, so I logged on to the administrator account on my computer (For some odd reason I made two accounts on my computer) and went to uninstall it
It said I needed administrator permission.

At any rate, I run avast.  It does a pretty freaking good job.

I don't get this sort of vibe from Norton 360 Gold.

When I downloaded a trojan Norton protected my computer really well. Also minimal pop-ups.

Oj. You singlehandedly won this entire topic with that video. Mcafee ruined my parents' computer and slowed it down to a crawl. They blamed it on my little brother, who just watched youtube videos on the computer.

I still have a sort of bias towards Avira. I had a computer with Avast once.
