Well, here's a handful of weird (and funny) Mario fangames I've come across back when I was on MFGG (and a little while after I left).
All of these are pretty good, in fact, good enough that I keep coming back and replaying them from time to time.
I'm 100% sure these do not fall into the terrible and strange first fangames category, but they all are weird.

Let's Go! Thingio! (http://www.mfgg.net/index.php?act=resdb&param=02&c=2&id=5278)

Battle of the AGES! Luigi vs. the Martians! / Yoshi VS. Windows 3 / Mushroom Pancakes / Mario Grows a Beard (http://www.mfgg.net/index.php?act=resdb&param=02&c=2&id=27966) (Yes, it does have 4 different names)

Late Night Mario (http://www.mfgg.net/index.php?act=resdb&param=02&c=2&id=22536)
Also check out its sequel (http://www.mfgg.net/index.php?act=resdb&param=02&c=2&id=23291)
And don't forget the sequel's sequel (http://www.mfgg.net/index.php?act=resdb&param=02&c=2&id=29507)
Late Night Mario reminds me of megaman sprite comic for some reason

Normal Super Mario Bros. (http://www.mfgg.net/index.php?act=resdb&param=02&c=2&id=17546)
And don't forget its very normal sequel (http://www.mfgg.net/index.php?act=resdb&param=02&c=2&id=18864)
And because trilogies are normal for games, there's a third one (http://www.mfgg.net/index.php?act=resdb&param=02&c=2&id=20927)

And, well, these fall into the "terrible on purpose" category:
The Waligie series (http://wiki.mfgg.net/index.php?title=Waligie) (MFGG Wiki link because of links to all games)
I made a MM8BDM skin of Waligie once, but didn't release it because of a lack of blue & cyan (and like his games, the skin was on purposely bad)

The download link for it is on the forums somewhere... but I forget. Either way, you'll be in tears laughing if it's your first time playing it.

Pichu Quest looks pretty hype. Hope he comes back in the next Smash Bros. w/ Roll's theme.

Oh boy, a really weird fangame collection I've seen recently is *sigh* Super Mario Turd Collection. (http://www.mfgg.net/index.php?act=resdb&param=02&c=2&id=29118) It's so weird, even the creator was surprised it got accepted!
I doubt you'd want to see it but whatevs
