Title: [CLASSES] "Back to Basics" (ALL SLOTS FILLED)
Post by: Turbodude on April 21, 2014, 05:21:30 PM
Hey, everyone! Some of you may know that it's been some time since the last competitive Classes event happened. I want to change that!

This event, as suggested by the title is a bit more old fashioned than some of the more recent tournaments. We've had a lot of interesting changes to the ever familiar game type, such as draft picks, or changes to the pace of the game itself. Though all of these are fun and exciting in their own right, I think it'd be time to go back to our roots for old times sake. With this I hope not only to bring back some good memories of way back when, but to also open up with a more lenient system to invite a broader audience.

The tournament will be done in a typical 'Double Elimination' bracket. You got your winner's bracket, and your loser's bracket. (http://challonge.com/tournaments/bracket_generator?ref=iehXAZqZQu) There will be deadlines set for each stage of the tournament, those who neglect their match until said deadline will be disqualified. If you wish to back out of the tournament prematurely for any reason at all, please contact me immediately and I will allow your opponent to advance.

There are no longer any prizes due to the time taken for this tournament. I hope you all enjoy yourselves for the matches coming, however!

hi Sam I have a question

you didn't define players having to choose classes to use in each Duel
and you also say Force Respawn has to be off

does that mean someone can literally go into this and use a different class each life
Title: Re: [CLASSES] "Back to Basics" (SIGNUPS AVAILABLE NOW)
Post by: Turbodude on April 21, 2014, 05:27:22 PM
Oh yes, I forgot to mention a max amount of classes. Thank you for that!

There is going to be a max of 4 classes, and players are allowed to change to any of those they selected at will. Sorry about leaving that unmentioned.

EDIT: Updated the signup sheet and rules a bit to explain this!

Then I will update and exhort the players to do so, and duels will not count unless they're running on the most recent version.

Please let me know if I'm missing anything else, this is the first time I have run a tournament before, but I plan to keep tight control of it.

EDIT: Updated with medals!

One question- you said there's a winners and losers bracket. Does this imply there's gonna be some round-robin play, or will you just decide which of us are losers and winners on your own intellect? >.>

Also I'll sign up

I'm not entering this, but one of the rules got me thinking. If command suicides are going to be disabled, why not ban stages that have pits or otherwise hazards in which players can kill themselves intentionally as well?

I'm dropping out myself though. I can't find myself enjoying the atmosphere of this particular tournament.

Yeah, I went back to the first post and noticed that.......Went back a few times, actually.

Anyways, edited my post.......a few times....and I switched Bass to Mega Man since that was apparently the only copy-class I've had a decent amount of time using that wasn't banned. (BTW, why is Rock banned when he's the closest to vanilla?)

Double copywep damage is ridiculous even with lower armor

Wait what? I thought that Rockman had normal copywep damage in exchange for light armor, and that the other copywep classes did like 11% less damage to non-copywep classes with their weapons.

Also, is there a set or maximum amount of players you want in this Turbo? I'm interested but my schedule is chaotic for a while and if there is only a few spots left I'll let someone else take it.

Compared to other copyweps, he does more damage, because he doesn't have their nerf.

He does the same damage as the core megaman class.

Hornet Woman, Honey Woman, it's all semantics, they're the same thing in my eyes.

Also, why isn't Duo or Doc banned? Doc is the best copywep currently and Duo has a 2HKO primary

That's my point exactly. I know it's just going to end up sort of like the last classes duel tourney, but the copyweps all around are just unfair to fight

Doc regens ammo, and can move faster depending on what weapon he equips. Almost every map has at least one weapon that makes him move and jump better than most classes just by having it, and even though he chews through ammo, the weapons still are enough to kill with ammo to spare
Title: Re: [CLASSES] "Back to Basics" (19/24 SLOTS FILLED)
Post by: Korby on April 24, 2014, 04:03:13 PM
first, doc generally gets lower armor whenever he gets increased speed or jump height, so it's not like he doesn't lose anything for the stats he gains.

second, he has roughly twice the ammo costs as any other copywep. what you're implying is that doc will never, ever miss a shot, so he's clearly op.

third, yes, he regenerates ammo slowly, but he can't pick up ammo-- which, by the way, is everywhere-- that the other copyweps CAN pick up

i'm not saying that doc isn't strong, because he is, that's sort of a trait of copywep classes, but he's not as broken as you seem to think.
Title: Re: [CLASSES] "Back to Basics" (19/24 SLOTS FILLED)
Post by: ScrapHeap on April 24, 2014, 04:17:22 PM
I'm not saying he's BROKEN, per se, rather that he's one of, if not THE best copywep useable.
There are other broken classes, one of which seems to be Tomahawkman [by popular opinion], but he's ok to me

In hopes of not jeopardizing the chances of a medal being awarded, I'm withdrawing from the tournament myself and will simply just manage things.

My reason for including copy weps is to hopefully broaden the horizon of players, while still keeping some sort of mind to overpowered ones such as Bass, Proto and Rock.

Scarlet Devil, you must update your first post (about the robotmaster).

Well, is it possible to start at Friday?... i didnt want ask that, but a weekend is always cool to start a tourney without the school days for people. I think... x)

The tournament has started! All classes chosen are finalized!
Check the brackets to find your matches.

Please keep in mind that because of the number of players, the bracket has forced itself to give a few 'byes' to people. I apologize in advance, but hopefully this works out just fine!

Happy fragging!

I went ahead and made a second duel server for tournament matches (:: [BE] New York :: Tournament Classes Duel). As of right now, the only difference between the two is name... I think just having 2 classes duel servers will be enough, but if it gets to be a huge issue I can put a password on it.

And Turbodude has RCON to both servers.

Yeah, I did rather poorly. I would bring up an excuse about how I probably wasn't at my prime skill from lazing around watching anime and YouTube all day, but I knew what I was walking into.

Besides, those were pretty intense for the most part. (AKA the first match was pretty epic for a bit as we were around the same frags countering each other until I eventually started slipping up)

So, yeah, GG.

Alright, so heed my warning.

If this tournament doesn't get continued, the medal prizes will be withdrawn. Unlike Korby's second class tournament, I'm going to far less lenient with extensions on this one, and future official competitions. These types of tournaments require constant attention, or else people will get bored, lose interest, quit, etc.

So, if I don't see activity picking up on this, the medals will be forfeited.
Title: Re: [CLASSES] "Back to Basics" (ALL SLOTS FILLED)

There needs to be a set time to avoid these kinda things. I've been waiting for quite a while with absolutely no response. I can't even set up a time for my own battle since his own fight hasn't been completed (as far as I know, nobody bothers to tell me anything).

I was once going to fight Mystic, but his lag issues were just such a big problem that we had to agree to do it another time. Now, I don't think anyone wants to reinstall 8BDMV3 just to go on with this.
Title: Re: [CLASSES] "Back to Basics" (ALL SLOTS FILLED)
Post by: King Dumb on May 21, 2014, 04:27:19 PM
I have kept the Classes Duel Server up specifically for this tournament. I assumed people involved would keep the MM8BDM-v3b.pk3 in their MM8BDM folders for this purpose. As long as you have the pk3 you should have no problem joining the old server.

In order for this tournament to continue, not even a set deadline is as important as player communication. If you are in the tournament and reading this thread, please make your presence known here and PM your opponents.

Right now, I shall update the brackets. I am terribly sorry for the wait, folks. Life has been having its ups and downs on my end, but I promise to be a lot more proactive with this.

I'd also like people to keep to the version of Classes that was around when the tournament has started, and to refrain from V4 maps to keep things (mostly) consistent.

EDIT: Brackets updated, please let me know if I've made a mistake in which I promptly apologize in advance.

Alright, updated.

Reminder to all the people who lost that you still have loser rounds to do!

There's currently 6 matches needing to be done, at the moment.

* Korby vs. Scarlet Devil

* Woohoo vs. Jc949

Loser Rounds

* Giantmega vs. Mystic

* Awbawlisk vs. OtakuAlex

Get to it!

Also, in case anyone is wondering why That One Boss is ahead of a bracket than me in the losers round, it's because we both have dropped out and there doesn't seem to be a way around it, so I just gave him the win anyway but whoever wins between Giantmega vs. Mystic will go on straight ahead That One Boss!

I have sent a message to Korby and Scarlet Devil, as well as Kapus and Clayton.

If Korby and Scarlet Devil do not get their match done by 12 A.M. Tuesday, June 17th E.S.T - 5:00 (meaning they have all day of Monday as well, but only til midnight), then Scarlet Devil will be disqualified for inactivity and failing to get the match done.

If Kapus and Clayton do not get their match done by 12 A.M. Wednesday, June 18th E.S.T - 5:00 (meaning they have all day of Tuesday as well, but only til midnight), then Clayton will be disqualified for inactivity and failing to get the match done.

Woohoo and Jc949 have scheduled their match for Sunday.

I feel it's time that the tournament moves on and everyone has been waiting for their matches. I hope for the tournament to pick up more activity after this.

Alright, Kapus has dropped out. Clayton moves on, as well as Lego automatically winning his Loser round.

Clayton has informed me that he has made just as much as an effort to get the match done, and after speaking with Kapus, I can confirm this is true, so I'd like to apologize for deciding to disqualify only him, if he didn't get his match done.

Anyways, the tournament can move on.

I've also been informed that Scarlet Devil has been sighted lately, and in hopes of that, I'll be extending Korby and SD's match to midnight of Sunday, June 22nd EST

There's currently 5 matches needing to be done!

Ordinary Rounds

* Korby vs. Scarlet Devil

* Fyone vs. Clayton

* Woohoo vs. Perfectlylegit

Loser Rounds

* Jc949 vs. Magnet Dood

* Koal vs. Lego

Well Rui-, i think, i will re-install V3B tonight. Even if i suck at dueling, it can be funny to play against jc or dood'.
I remember a guy said it can delete your save if you install v3b over v4a...so yeah.. new folder time...
edit: weird: zandronum and doomseeker works with the V3B or V4A of the game even if it's not the same version, it loads the different version o_o

Me and JC were about to finish our first match before I got votekicked. Neither of us picked the map we were on (it was MM8GRE, and it was on the server before we joined), so should we just start over or finish the match with the points we had?

Yes, concerning this, it was quite problematic and it never happened before(?), if I were you I'd start back in the same stage considering the same score ; except if both of you are on an agreement to start to 0 I guess?

I talked with Watakid ; next time, the host, in order to prevent this to occur again (because yeah it's kind of frustrating to get kick'd in this special case, the dull reason of this votekick was that "the fight would go forever because you'd collect health pickups again and again"), must take a few measures

> The admins of the server should be in place to solve this kind of problems
> Even simpler, disabling votekicks (those are for players who are abusing bugs or filling pools, derp)
> A password for the server, only communicated to the actual competitors

Yeah, I'd suggest you both just go back to the same stage and keep the points you had, unless you both want to restart the match completely and start over. o:

All of that aside, I lost 2-1 against Jack Corvus.

Guess I'm 0-3 coming out of the first round at tournaments.

5-2 MM8GRE his choice: JC
5-4 MM5STO my choice: Me
5-3 MM7JUN mutual: JC

GGs were had by all

Sorry for the delay, anywaaaays.

Scarlet Devil has been disqualified from the match due to inactivity and not making it within the deadline.

However, I've decided to give SD another chance by not disqualifying their match with Giantmega. They have til the end of July 4th to get it done.

There's currently 4 matches needing to be done :B

* Korby vs. Woohoo

Loser Rounds

Just wondering if Korby tried to contact Scarlet Devil on Friday because he/she said they will be available to play all day last Friday. Was Scarlet Devil not able to be found or did they just not contact each other?

Last Friday was the 20th. Scarlet Devil was not on during that time, and I also spoke with King Dumb (who is hosting the duel servers) and he says the most recent time he had Scarlet Devil online on one of the servers was early morning of the 19th.

While I spoke with Korby and he admits that he hasn't made much of an attempt to contact Scarlet Devil, Korby has posted that he was ready whenever Scarlet Devil was and was much more active, while Scarlet Devil only appeared once to update their situation and Korby never received a message from them.

However, again, Scarlet Devil has not been disqualified from the loser rounds, and was given a second chance.

Also, after speaking with King Dumb, I'd really appreciate if more than just a post was done as far as communication goes (unless it seems inevitable otherwise). I'd also really appreciate it if any of the contestants could tell me when such communication is going on as I want to be informed of what goes on that could delay a match being done.

Sorry, Scarlet Devil, but you have already been disqualified. :/

You can still do your match with Giantmega in the loser round, if that's alright with you.

Just a PSA. Since the BE server move to Montreal you can no longer host a server for this tournament on Best-Ever. This is due to an error apparently with MM8BDM-v3b.pk3, but perhaps also with Classes-v7bh.pk3.

In either case, this means more trouble for this tournament, of course. Obviously this necessitates a suspension of Rule #6, and I assume an additional rule that matches may not be played on one of the battler's own servers. I hosted a server for Lego and Bikdark's duel and it was stable enough to allow for a steady duel. I am unable to leave this server up at all times, so when contestants want to do a match, you can check for me via PM or Skype and if I'm around I'll set up a server. Otherwise, you'll have to find someone else to host a server for you.

EDIT: To clarify for anyone reading this, I don't actually know how the problem was caused definitively. All I know is that the server I could host prior now crashes immediately to a sprite error on DUORF6F4.

Because of [BE]'s server migration, Rule #6 is from here on null and void.
Instead, I will require a third party to host a server to prevent obvious host advantages. Please state the name of your host/server along with your match results.

I'm also going to take the initiative and offer to host servers upon request on Skype.

Like King Dumb I also will not have it up 24/7, but it will be run with a stable connection.

Results: Scarlet Devil: 2

Good luck Scarlet Devil in the rest of the tourney ^^

I am sorry to say, but I am pulling the medals for this tournament.

This thing started up back near the end of April. It's July now, It's been slugging along, motivation seems to be low and I've seen quite a few drop-outs. And I do feel that winning the tournament at this point wouldn't be as fulfilling as if everyone was motivated and giving it their all, nor would I feel right in rewarding a medal to a tournament that dragged on this long and had this many drop-outs and pacing problems.

Sorry guys, my word is final.
