Target Blaster Competition #3

Come one, come all, to Cutstuff's third Target Blaster competition! It's been a long while since the last two, so hopefully everyone is ready for some more action! The competition and target layout have been approved by Ivory, so...

You are competing for these medals: (http://www.cutstuff.net/forum/images/medals/badge20.gif) (http://www.cutstuff.net/forum/images/medals/badge20-RU.png)

The map for this time around is going to be MMBKIN. Here's the details for this event:
-All you need to do is have a Cutstuff account and compete in the approved server to be eligible to win this event!
-There will be a BE server up with the wad. This is the server where runs will count. The server name will be :: [BE] New York :: Cutstuff Target Blaster 3.
-In addition to the best time, the server will also note the second and third best times. As long we have sufficient participation, this event will award a runner-up medals to the 2nd and 3rd place blasters!
-Medals will be awarded to the lowest three scores in the server log. Tying with an already-established top three time will not beat that time.
-To accommodate for this change, the autosuicide feature has been expanded. Now, you may type set autosuicide_[1, 2, or 3] 1 into the console, to automatically end your run if you go over the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place time, respectively.
-As before, there are 20 targets on the map, and you will not start with the Mega Buster. As an added twist, all non-MM&B weapons have been removed from the map! That means you must use the 8 new MM&B Robot Master weapons alone!
-If your name is not obvious, please state it in the chat of there server so I am aware.
-If you want to practice offline, set the game mode to survival (survival 1), then go to the map TARG01 (map TARG01).
-For those worried about the BE service going down for maintenance, remember that I will have access to the server log nonetheless, so the best times will not be lost!

This event will run from the time I put the server up until Monday, June 2, 11:59 PM EST (UTC-05:00).

Everything in this wad should run totally fine. However, knowing me there may be something go wrong. I will be around this release afternoon to make sure everything is stable. Which it should be!

Finally, here is the wad download. I simply modified the wad made by CutmanMike to account for three high scores, along with a couple Zandro1.2 fixes, so credit goes to him: MMBKIN-TargetBlaster-Current.wad (http://www.best-ever.org/download?file=mmbkin-targetblaster-current.wad)

Server will be up moments after this post is made. Please comment here with issues, questions, etc!

The server is up! IP is 108.61.83.66:15006

Just to clarify, you do not have to post in this thread to sign up for the event! Just join the server and make sure I know what your Cutstuff name is if you're not using it! If I don't know someone who gets a high score and they don't tell me who they are, they don't get a medal.

Also, the server is up.

yo can we ban Celery from this one though

are the pre-existing weapon tokens replaced with &Bass weapons
or is everything not from &Bass straight-up missing in action

Straight up missing. All the MMB weapons are where they originally stood.

Is there supposed to only be one starting position? After doing another set of practice runs, (or so I hoped to) I started in a place that totally threw off my act.

In classic KD fashion I discovered 2 lovely fixes to be made to the wad. Server has restarted. Here's the new wad.

MMBKIN-TargetBlaster-Current.wad (http://www.best-ever.org/download?file=mmbkin-targetblaster-current.wad)

Hopefully this will reduce a bit of lag for some users. Also will make my job at the end easier haha. I deeply apologize.

Ceridran, the server will use the same start every time, the Player 1 start near Ice Wall.

I made the mistake of playing DM. I found my path now.

.. With good time, too.

Da-dadaaa!

With KD giving me permission to share, I have created a little neat image of the map layout, with markings, to hopefully help you guys plan out your strategy!

Good luck to the people participating!

Count me in! I don't even remember if I got the chance to even participate in the last one.

It's been a fun first day of the competition! I've seen strategies develop, get discarded, evolve... It's very exciting!

Anyway, now would be a good time to clarify an important detail. Each player only enters one time. So, even if someone has achieved the best three times, for example, they will get the first place medal, and the runner-up will be considered from the best time outside of that person.

That being said, I figured you all might like to know what you're looking at.

Times so far (top three times among unique players):
1st: 10:49
2nd: 11:34
3rd: 13:54

As you can see, there is no reason to be discouraged! This is all about practice and focus. Anyone can get these times if you try hard enough! I look forward to seeing who steps up in the coming days.

EDIT: Also, as predicted BE is undergoing an update. I will have the Target Blaster server up soon after the servers reset. The times recorded on screen will be reset, but I have kept all times from the server, so your hard work will not be lost!

Just want to give KD a big well done for this layout, it's actually pretty interesting even though there's no stage gimmicks or anything. Feel free to keep making more of these if it's what people want, I tend to run out of ideas pretty quick for these (hence why I only bothered with 2).

I've noticed when playing offline that any time I quit MM8BDM and come back, I will have a different spawn point, either next to the copy vision ledge, overlooking the ice wall, or in one of the main rooms.

EDIT: Tried it some more, I'm spawning all over the map any time I boot up MM8BDM. Where is the official spawn?

Make sure you're in Survival mode when you practice. That mode uses the Player 1 start by the Ice Wall that is the start point of the server.

Reminder that the competition ends June 2nd, at 11:59 PM EST (UTC-05:00). Unfortunately, I will be absent from tomorrow morning until Wednesday afternoon. All times recorded after 11:59 PM EST on June 2nd will not count toward the competition, but the server will be up until I return.

I will announce the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners on Wednesday.

It's amazing how competition heavy the community has been since the year started.

Why do I have a feeling it won't be like this for the rest of the year, you know, when  I'M ACTUALLY ALLOWED TO PLAY!! *sigh*

Before I mention the results, I want to thank everyone who participated in this competition. There were a lot of great people that I saw time and time again grinding in the server, trying their hardest to get that new personal best or that new record. It is these people, winners or not, that make this competition so fun! I really enjoyed watching people compete with one another, experiment with new routes, and just have a good time in the server with everyone else. This competition is about pushing yourself to your limit, no matter where that is.

That being said, three individuals fought hard and wound up on top. It was great watching the competition intensify as the top times got lower and lower, quite quickly!

In third place, with a time of 0:11:14, is Kapus! (http://www.cutstuff.net/forum/images/medals/badge20-RU.png)

In second place, with a time of 0:09:25, is Michael! (http://www.cutstuff.net/forum/images/medals/badge20-RU.png)

And in first place, with a time of 0:09:06, is Celebi! (http://www.cutstuff.net/forum/images/medals/badge20.gif)

These times were all very hard-earned, and each winner deserves congratulations!

And forgive me for making one special note. And that note is about Michael. During this competition, I saw a lot of people giving their all and trying their very best. I also heard some people simply groan at the announcement of another target blaster competition, proclaiming it to be a pointless competition and thus not an enjoyable one. Michael embodied the exact opposite of this sentiment. Michael put in enormous effort to improve his time, and the result was a very intense race with Celebi that pushed both of them. And the best part is, he had fun all the while!

Thanks again to everyone for participating! Congratulations to Kapus and Michael, and hats off to Celebi for finishing in first with an amazing time! I can see all the time you spent in the server pushing for the best run, and you have certainly earned your victory!

Well done! Is Michael on the forums? I need his username to award the medal. Also I would like to hear how the route goes to get the best time, I think I have a good idea but I can't imagine getting just over 9 mega minutes.

As I said earlier this was a great layout, feel free to make the next one King Dumb unless you would like to give someone else a shot at it.

My time is pretty unimpressive compared to the other two. I thought about (and actually tried a little bit) getting my time below 11:00 to look a bit nicer, but I was way too burnt out by the end of the competition (also nobody really threatened my score anyway).

Great job to the host and the participants, though, and thank you for the congrats. I had lots of fun.

Kinda posting to see how the medals look.  For Mike, Knux and others, hit me up if your curious what the routes were.  I'm also unsure if 1st place chooses the next target comp map, or if another one is happening.  I vote it be a ctf map.

Edit: Woo three sniper medals, looks neat.

If we DO get another one of these, it'd better rely on bouncing weapons.
Title: Re: Target Blaster Competition #3 - MMBKIN

But bouncing in this engine is extremely random (especially when bouncing on other actors), would probably lead to some frustration.

I don't know, Mike. Mega Ball bouncing feels fine to me, and it's quite fun to use. Although, it could also involve ricocheting weapons such as Gemini Laser for interesting trick shots.

I think a theme with bouncing weapons could make for an interesting competition (I haven't played this current one, probably should at least take a look at it), but I think a map with weapons like Ice Wall, Mega Ball, Gemini Laser, Hyper Bomb, Wild Coil, and Rolling Cutter could allow for some creative target placement. Maybe a map pack could eventually come out of this where players can be tested on the knowledge of their weapons in order to get targets.

Did I say bouncing weapons? I meant ricocheting weapons.
