Title: Mapping Event - Dual Mapping!
Post by: Knux on June 12, 2014, 04:34:21 AM
This mapping event is all about two people working together to build a small Deathmatch map, using one set of textures each. Only one of the team members needs to know how to use Doom Builder 2/GZDoom Builder, in which case, the other person would draw areas that go in the map (with pencil and paper, or Paint, or whatever tool is better).

The goal of this mapping event is threefold: to allow a chance for the Proto Man medal outside of just October and December, to create a pack of small maps by and for the community, and to have fun, of course.

That said, there are some guidelines to follow:

1. The size of the map must not exceed 3072x3072 units in playable area space. Use Skulltag (Doom in Hexen) or UDMF as preferred. Should be built towards Deathmatch.

2. Before creating the map, each participant in a duo must select a texture set. Create the map using these two texture sets. A third one is allowed if both members agree on it. Skyboxes have no texture limit. Also, you don’t need to use all the textures in your sets chosen.

3. Because of having to determine how many texture sets were used, and as much as I like custom textures, they cannot be allowed for this event. Though if successful, the pack will definitely allow them. To be specific, no custom anything other than music is allowed.

4. To have some variety in looks, textures may not be repeated more than three (3) times across teams. For example, if three teams have Bomb textures in their chosen sets, Bomb textures cannot be used by a fourth team.

5. Evidence must be provided by each duo of participants that there was a more or less equal amount of work done. Words are cheap, so a screenshot of the map wireframe identifying who did which area should be good enough.

6. We reserve the right to refuse maps that aren’t up to snuff, although this probably shouldn’t be happening.

7. Entries will be accepted until July 35, 2014, meaning you all have three weeks!... almost. I won't be accepting things at the very last minute, so be fairly diligent.

8. Because there's no telling for real if partners outside the forum exist, please pair up with someone from the forums. Anybody could easily make an excuse and say they're teaming up with someone who's not a forum member, and actually be doing a map by themselves. Can't have that, sorry.

As said before, all accepted entries will receive the MM8BDM Extender medal! (http://cutstuff.net/forum/images/medals/badge2.gif)

This is not a competition, but we will still be judging for the best map overall, and the winners will get to name the map pack. If the event is successful enough to make said pack, that is! Within limitations, such as lewd stuff not being allowed. Finally, the judges for that small aspect will be King Dumb, SickSadWorld and myself, but all map submissions go in my PM Inbox, so send them that way.

If you’re fine with all that, go look for a buddy and sign up in this thread! Please use this format:

Team: Username and username
Chosen textures: 1, 2 (and 3?), where the numbers are tilesets chosen.

LAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

I like the texture limitations, but it would be kind of ridiculous to stick to just two tilesets considering how limited some of the stages are (Air Man) compared to others (King Tower). Even with a simple, straightforward map like Burnin' Buttocks, I still had to use a couple of outside textures (Flame Man's metal tiles) to have everything tie in nicely. Having that third tileset available really helps things out.

Llama and I will be signing up as the Battle Brothers dynamic duo. We still need to pick textures though.

Using team names sounds like a cool idea, and we can do it that way for whoever wants it! Remember to use the format provided for signing up, though.

This is for standard deathmatch right? It doesn't explicitly state what mode the maps are for...

I've worked together with Yuri to make maps in the past, and I think it'd be great to team up with her again this time. However, when we teamed up, Yuri rarely did any work relating to the layout. Instead she would put all of her work into polishing, decorating and cleaning the map to make it look as nice as possible, whereas I would do the main layout structure. Is this a sufficient amount of work for both sides, or is Yuri going to have to do more? I know it may not sound like much here, but the work Yuri does has REALLY made a difference in making our maps look pretty and interesting instead of being rather bland.

IMO yes as long as Yuri and yourself each select a tileset, but will defer official answer to Knux

Yuri would still need to come up with layout pieces, no ifs or buts. It's one of the main guidelines for this.

That's fair enough, I'm no stranger to coming up with layout pieces.

Chosen textures: Dorkman Castle, Stone man, and possibly something like sword man or ground man, not completely sure yet.

Okay, so I took a little break from my break to check on this thread. Updated the first post with LD and Jake's signup, and Balrog/Gummy's.

You can be ambiguous about textures until the due date, at which point I will remove anybody who doesn't have them proper. It's the reason Jake and LD have only Dark and Stone under their signup. The third set seems like it'll be used, but it isn't concretely stated.

Okay, so I -think- Geminibro and I are partnering up, though communication has been really wonky between us so we haven't picked a theme yet.

A question on all this- when you say texture sets, does that include textures from the NES stage that aren't included inside the core game (AKA can we use your MM1-6 missing texture pack)?

Confirming one of the texture sets to be Grenade Man.

Do you think its time?
That's for you to decide.

Alright so I thought things over, twice. Quite frankly it was their idea- you know how I was originally towards this.
Anyways, I'll be signing up for both myself AND my partner. This is the part where I bring up that your rules only state that two people are required; it doesn't state that BOTH people need forum accounts!

I'll be the one sending you this "visual" proof you require along with the map, so don't worry too much about that. Yes, doing this is still abiding by your rules and removing us from this "Friendly" competition simply because I'm involved is some form of "Discrimination" and would nearly confirm the death of this topic. Now that that's out of the way, let's have fun!

+SIGNUP
Team Name: The Golden Comet
Participants: Rozark Kyouko, Captain Sanders II
Texture Sets: Groundman x Skullman (Miscellaneous Tomahawkman stuff might be thrown in but that's for you to decide if its "allowed")

We do have one question though: Tilesets are the only things restricted right? So we can totally use Cactuses/Polar bears/Jamaican Conga Dancers if we wanted to?

So yeah, you can make cactus/frozen tree salad. You'll never salad harder than Outback Garden, though.  :ugeek:

Added your third set as Tomahawk.

I'm only signing up because blaze wanted me to

Team name: The Twin Flames
Members: Jc494 and Blaze
Textures: Coldman, Dr. Cossack, Freezeman

Simple question:
Are custom textures allowed that use the patches of core textures ? (I simply want to create a 16px by 16px texture of a texture that's 32px by 32px is that ok ? inb4no )

I became Gospel's partner.

Team: Gospel and Shade Guy
Chosen Textures: Needle Man, Snake Man, Buster Rod G.

We're aiming to only use BRG for its Snakey textures, so the majority of that texture set should remain unused to keep repetition of textures used in Balrog and Gummywormz's entry to a minimum. One question though, are we allowed to use the CTF red/blue recolours of Needle textures? They're technically core textures, after all.
Title: Re: Mapping Event - Dual Mapping!
Post by: Knux on June 20, 2014, 04:26:29 AM
Actually, Needle Man did have Blue/Red textures in Megaman 3. Red ones were in the normal stage, while blue ones were in it's Doc Robot iteration. It's still Needle Man textures, so yes, it's legit. Thank you for asking first, though. Technicalities can be an ass to work with sometimes.

Sor of, the blue/red version of the green metals are custom. The interior textures were the ones that had the blue/red versions.

I haven't heard from Geminibro for about 72 hours, so unless he gets on soon and then we really get our shit in gear, we probably won't be signing up since we don't even have a theme sorted out yet.

Very cool, updated.

Also, I have added an eight guideline, which was a dumb idea not to include given the nature of this event. This pertains to Rozark's entry, which was revoked under said grounds. Just remember, though. If something isn't in the guidelines, it doesn't necessarily mean it's allowed. Please ask first before making assumptions, thank you.

Small question, what does the code have to be for submission or will you take care of that?
Title: Re: Mapping Event - Dual Mapping!

Anything, since I'll organize them later. When you send me the maps through PM, I'll give them map codes, their intended map names and numbers (but not creators until later to avoid bias).

so you have everyone publicly pick their tilesets

Okay guys, listen up. I wanted to leave signups open until the last day, but if I did that, people would want to rush maps and I'd have to extend the deadline so that they didn't. Therefore, I'm closing signups on June 30, 2014 at 11:59pm (AST).

For those who signed up, I'm looking forward to your creations!

Perhaps, but now people are going to sign up the day before and just rush the map on the last day- this doesn't really change anything though especially when no new signups have been involved within quite some time now.

Great, I was about to announce that everyone has a little less than 24 hours left to sign up if they want to participate. Just remember that the deadline is July 3, so rev up the mapping engines! Although if people need more time, I can always extend the deadline a little.

Alright, people. Since most of you requested it, and some had actual reasons for doing so, I am extending the deadline for maps to July 5, at 11:59PM AST. Please do not ask for another extension however, as you all had three weeks for something that can be potentially done in less than a day.

22 hours until the deadline hits. There won't be another extension, so get those maps in.
Title: Re: Mapping Event - Dual Mapping!
Post by: Knux on July 06, 2014, 07:12:15 AM
Alright, real talk. The reason I decided to make this event was because, after hearing so many complaints about "MAPSIZECREEP" during the release days of v4, I suspected that people would be naturally attracted towards an event in which small maps and cooperative work were the main gist. Normally, I would go and say that I am severely disappointed that only two of the six pairs submitted their map and that people don't really care for map sizes or even meeting deadlines, but this is a special circumstance.

After SmashBro posted his event thread and I looked at it, I instantly decided that it was better than this one. Why? Because creating a piece (the problem element from FTM) then throwing everyone in a loop by pairing them randomly seems like a pretty genius formula for fun. There was also the fact that everybody who entered it would have to make two maps, and the people who entered this one would feel overloaded with work by having to make THREE maps with three different people. Coordination can be tough with two people, and that's not factoring in anything else they need to do in their daily lives.

In any case, thank you to those who submitted their maps:

- Gummywormz and Balrog
- ForteGigasGospel and Shade Guy

These people submitted their maps before the deadlines and should receive Extender medals. However, given that two maps is not enough to make a proper event (and the apathetic feelings from everyone towards this event), there will not be a pack and there will most certainly be no judging.

As for the maps themselves, they will be posted shortly. This can now cease to be a Global Announcement.
