Hey, I always sign up for things and never finish them, so why not!

Name: Magnet Dood
Mapping Style: I'm more of a fan of mapping indoor and mechanical stuff, but I can do outside naturey stuff if the situation calls for it. I'm a guy who goes inside out- start me off with a good centerpiece, and I'll be good to go.
Textures: I choo-choo-choose Charge Man
Contact: Cutmail, Skype (stardoodmm5)

I'm assuming the mapping chat you're speaking of is UMAID unless there's another secret one.

in case any of you showed up just to say "Smash is bad lel"

[3:32:53 PM] Ivory: Just to point out, due to my tighter control on events and the fact he's offering a medal.
[3:32:53 PM] Ivory: I can poke Smash to keep it going.
[3:32:53 PM] Ivory: Hopefully
You forgot one ;D -Korby

so yeah it'd be pretty neat to have people show up for this
also Dood's been added to the roster

This is a good excuse to practice refining maps because I've been fooling around with stuff for a while but that's all it is, fooling around. So why not? Though I promise that I'm only super lame at making things look pretty, I know how to actually use things.

Oh, don't worry about having it right now. Even though I've already gotten a piece from Dr. Freeman (thanks by the way), sign-ups are just for getting a nice head count and reserving tiles; you don't actually need to submit your map piece until July 4th. But you better frickin' REMEMBER!

Whoa, whoa, whoa, let's calm down.

I was making a facetious comment. I don't mean to sabotage, I swear, I just picked Gyroman since it's hard to use and never seen anywhere.

I can see the reason for being cautious, though. I just meant that I knew my partner would likely send ill will for being paired up with Gyro, so I put in a facetious comment about it. I apologize, the sign-up probably wasn't the best place to make a comment like that.

Really, I'm sorry, didn't mean for it to sound so serious.

Sorry Smash, but I gotta drop out of this competition because I'm gonna be swamped with summer college courses and I thought we'd be put into trios instead of pairing each mapper with 2 other people. I don't think I have enough time to make 2 maps, sadly.

Skulltag (Doom in Hexen format), since that's the one that was always used in MM8BDM's core before UDMF became relevant.

Finally got around to updating the front page with all our new entrants! I'll be double-checking the Dropbox in a bit to confirm completed map fragments. I think I speak for a lot of us when I say I'm really excited to see what combinations are created, and what each team can do with their map!

(click to show/hide)
Also, to clear up a bit of confusion; during Phase 2, each entrant forms two teams with two separate mappers, and teams can be exclusive of one another. For example, let's say Magnet Dood draws Gumballtoid and Linnie as his partners. Two teams would be formed here: a map between Magnet Dood and Gumballtoid, and a map between Magnet Dood and Linnie. Gumballtoid and Linnie are not necessarily partners with each other; Gumballtoid might end up drawing Ivory as his second partner, and his teams would be Gumballtoid/Magnet Dood and Gumballtoid/Ivory.

Also, for the combination map, you aren't simply mashing your two map fragments together. Think of it like the FTM compo: you have to use the pieces given to you, but you can turn them around, resize them, lay them over one another, and (of course) build new map area around the pieces you have to use. You can also re-texture part of your original map fragments, but keep the original tileset choices intact!

That's it for this update, thanks for playing~

Friendly reminder that you all have three days to finish your map pieces!
If something comes up I can move the deadline back by a day or so, but don't count on it.

In addition, the following entrants have not submitted an acceptable piece:

Get your pieces together in time for the jam!

I submitted mine at some point yesterday, and immediately got chastised by Jack Corvus about it being the wrong size/missing texture.
So yeah my piece is in and I will say for the thirtieth time that groundman textures are based.

... I've been trying to dance around the issue, but I'm not up for this shit anymore.

Gummywormz. You know exactly what you're doing. The first piece you submitted was a giant square with circles in the middle, and now you've submitted a giant square with floating squares. I mean seriously, what the hell are you trying to accomplish here? You're not trying in the slightest to make a usable piece, you're just trying to troll the event and ruin everyone else's fun. I've heard complaints from a good half of the entrants saying they would drop out if they were paired with you, and honestly after seeing your two "attempts" I'm inclined to agree with them. The only thing you're looking for here is more fodder for you personal "map pack" collection of shattered dreams, and I'm not about to let that happen.

Consider this your only warning.

If people don't want to work with me, then I'll just drop out.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
EDIT:
I suppose I should have some explanation. I honestly just couldn't come up with a layout. I probably should have just dropped out instead of trying to submit something half-assed. Also Metal Man textures are horrible but I suppose that's my fault too.

However, stating I'm trying to "troll the competition" just so I can have more "Best Maps Ever" fuel is ridiculous. Best Maps Ever is dead except in name. There are no "Best Maps" left and I do not intend to create more (or even update the pack for v4a compatibility for that matter). It was a product of its time. Newer members seem to be more interested in coding (or rather saying they want to learn to code, but never do). All that's left (aside from "big name" map packs) are packs that are teased and not released, and packs that are mediocre / forgettable at worst (though I suppose that's a good thing).

I wanted to learn how to map properly, but if people not wanting to work with me and Lego's post are any indication, I guess everyone is hostile to mistakes.

(and a notice not 2 days before the deadline would have been nice too...)
and the pack will be hosted once and then forgotten anyway too.

The FTM compo still sees plays in the SHR++ server. Hell, I'd probably host the Halloween maps in a server or two if it wasn't for the lighting detail and the incompatibility with V4.

Given that I'm left with ten participants (5 potential submissions) for the dual mapping event because of one pair dropping out, and that this event is far more fun, I can cancel that one if everyone agrees. It's just that I find this event so much more fun and dynamic, and I'd hate to overload people with work.

Not to mention only Gummy and Balrog have submitted their map so far.

Absolutely not.

I have been forced out of this one due to stupidity and bias (on both sides, admittedly). Balrog and I have worked hard on our entry and we do not want it to go to waste. Our work should not have to be trashed because others failed to meet the deadline, and probably because we aren't "important big name mappers".

No, while Smash jumped to conclusions, which is unfair. You are just as guilty with you lack of communication. You made two attempts, yes, but you also didn't mention your issues with producing an acceptable map piece until after Smash had to call you out on what he perceived to be trolling.

This entire situation could of been avoided had you communicated with the host to begin with. So please don't go around using this "we're not big name mappers" card.

Except he only notified me 3 days before the deadline that my entry was not acceptable. (And no, I didn't "know exactly what I was doing") . I then contacted him regarding if the 2nd attempt was acceptable with no response.

But it doesn't matter anyway. The groups have been decided already.

And I don't think losing out on one day of work (assuming the deadline for the other event isn't moved again) is going to impact too much.

Time for (hopefully) the last intermission update!
This message concerns all mappers.

So today's the 23rd. Second progress report. This means I'm going to ask about how much jamming you guys have been slamming, but unlike last time I'm going to be collecting files from everyone. This is so I have definitive proof of how much progress is being reported, per se. I'd much rather if you came to me first, instead of me having to hunt you guys down.

Today was also supposed to be the deadline, but due to a couple major changes (being the departure of Knux and Dood, as well as Stardust and Maxine forming a pair as a result) the deadline will be pushed back to August 1st. This is the very latest I'm going to shove the date back, so get your maps in gear and be ready to submit your work by next week Friday!

As always, thanks for playing! I hope to see everyone's hard work come to fruition pretty soon!

Alright, concern.

I've noticed some maps [notably Jack's map with Blaze's piece, along with Knux and Jack's] have text in the corner indicating the name of the musical piece used for the map. Will this be required for everyone? I'm personally against it because it looks tacky in my opinion.
Even so, it would be prudent to make a readme with each of the maps' songs in them, along with the composer of the work and its origin, should it have one.

Secondary concern is what songs to use for the boss themes, because that's going to inflate the file size of the pack quite a large amount. A bunch of Shovel Knight stuff was done nicely so it makes sense there, but it still concerns me.
Title: Re: Come on and slam! The Brothers Mapping Jam!
Post by: Ivory on July 27, 2014, 03:30:55 AM
I'm in agreement with Lego. I think if every map had its own unique boss music, the file size for the final package is going to be absolutely absurd.

To quote Lego.
Quote
[8:24:59 PM] Lego: personally
[8:25:04 PM] Lego: 18 maps = 3 boss themes
[8:25:11 PM | Edited 8:25:14 PM] Lego: 1/6 maps
[8:25:27 PM] Lego: That's how I would handle it
[8:25:55 PM] Ivory: Same. I would of done something along those lines too

On top of file-size concern, it would make the jam maps feel even more unified as opposed to the more loose feeling of every map featuring its own music. We could even share some unique victory fanfares and really make the mapping jam feel solid and unified as a whole.

But who picks the boss music?
Title: Re: Come on and slam! The Brothers Mapping Jam!
Post by: Ivory on July 27, 2014, 04:23:40 AM
Either Smash or all the jammers vote on it?
Title: Re: Come on and slam! The Brothers Mapping Jam!
Post by: Dr. Freeman on July 27, 2014, 05:05:44 AM
While I prefer unique boss themes because I just think it adds more flavor, how would imperfect loops drop the size anything? The file doesn't just get larger if it is perfect. The song is probably just as long as it would be perfect or not.

That said, I'm really freaking tired so if I'm forgetting something obvious I apologize.
Title: Re: Come on and slam! The Brothers Mapping Jam!
Post by: Russel on July 27, 2014, 09:20:29 PM
The suggestion Ivory and I posed was to 3 boss themes instead of 18, cutting down on file size. Loops have literally nothing to do with the suggestion.
I sincerely wish Galactan didn't edit out what he said, because Freeman's seems to be answering Galactan's post.

I've gotta say, I'm really impressed with everyone's work. Time after time I was blown away by you guys' collaborations, your ideas and your combined efforts. I honestly can't wait until it's time to compile everything together and release the pack for a celebratory server party; it's gonna be a whole lot of fun!

I also have a slight announcement. Due to personal events I had completely forgotten about, and have subsequently forgotten to mention until now, I will be busy for a good half of August 1st. As a result (and a slight request from a couple mappers), please have your final map builds ready to roll before the end of August 2nd. Everything will be tallied up at the end of the day, and I'll be able to put the maps together with appropriate boss music and what-not.

As always, thank you to everyone who entered The Brothers Mapping Jam, and thank you to everyone who helped our mappers along the way!

Alright, I guess I have to be honest with everybody.

I've purposely been stalling the pack because of two things. First, I want to get a proper readme and thank you typed up, to really put a big fresh stamp on the pack and send it off as the great creation it turned out to be; and second, I was working on a surprise present to include with the pack. Unfortunately, I overestimated my ability to have it done in a timely manner, and underestimated the effort it would take to get it done. I don't feel comfortable labeling the event as "complete" without having an amazing send-off, so here's what we'll do to tide everyone over in the meantime...

The Mapping Jam Mini-Pack! (http://www.best-ever.org/download?file=mappingjammini.pk3)
Contains ten fresh, tasty, Hot-N-Ready maps to rub against your assorted body parts.

The mini-pack technically contains one map from each entrant, so everyone has equal-ish representation. I'll be releasing the full pack (all 15 maps + bonus map + thank you package) relatively soon. Please don't freak out; now that there's something half-released, I somehow feel more pressured to push the full map pack out in a timely manner.

oh yeah and since technically everyone who entered got a release I guess Mike can give you Fun Medals now

KNOWN ISSUES
- Textures missing on JAM01 (I'm so bad at this)
- Block Monsters missing on JAM01, JAM09
- JAM16's scripts must've not even compiled since the boss music refuses to work

A lot of these maps are really good, and I see a lot of texture mixtures I never thought have worked together and they seemed to have been pulled off great! Wish i could have partaken in this mapping jam, but I can't really map on a deadline too easy.
Title: Re: Come on and slam! The Brothers Mapping Jam!
Post by: Russel on August 06, 2014, 07:16:03 PM
Don't worry, you aren't the only one, which is why there are only 15 maps instead of the predicted 18.
I didn't think I could work to a deadline like that either, but I got both my maps done relatively soon and with good results.
Bear in mind that I'm also fairly inexperienced as a mapper, but have looked at lots of maps that are considered "good" and basically copied what they did.
And then did it again.
Five times.

Furthermore, the actual medal isn't going to be issued until the full, intended release gets done.
But really, is this surprise really going to be worth waiting ages for a full release?

i have a bit of a problem, in LMS (and maybe more game modes too) whenever you get one frag the boss music kicks in. And in LMS when one player gets eliminated the victory music plays, if it isn't the last kill the music kicks in again. Kind of surprised this issue hasn't been addressed on here until now.

I know this is a bump, but would anyone be able to make a version of this Wad that doesn't use a "+" in the title? Currently there's a glitch going around that prevents Wadseeker from finding Wads and Pk3's that have certain symbols, such as plusses.

I'm here to report what are possibly textures causing the game to crash in JAM11. I checked every other map extensively after encountering this bug, but it seems to be on that map only. I find it odd since that never happened before. To be specific, it's on the Wily textures piece.

On another note, shouldn't this have its own thread in Projects now that it is a map pack?
Title: Re: The Brothers Mapping Jam [FINISHED]
Post by: Russel on June 06, 2015, 06:48:37 AM
It was an issue that existed in software mode.
Something related to 3D floors being rendered weirdly.

Anyhow, I fixed it and if updates happen for this pack, I'll throw the fixed map in. Unfortunately for the meanwhile people are gonna have to deal with it because I don't like rushing out whole new versions for simple, small-scale changes.
And if I have to change anything else about that map, it's getting converted to UDMF format.
Title: Re: The Brothers Mapping Jam [FINISHED]
Post by: LlamaHombre on June 06, 2015, 02:40:55 PM
Perhaps it may be worth looking into maps that weren't finished by the deadline, and try to get maps added in that meet the original theme. We've got all the time in the world it seems, and this event was both relatively popular and seems to be hosted frequently so I don't necessarily see a reason why not.

Alternatively maybe down the line we could do a re-roll? Give each person (who wants to participate anyway) another partner to work with? Something like that.
Title: Re: The Brothers Mapping Jam [FINISHED]
Post by: Knux on June 06, 2015, 06:45:43 PM
I'd be glad to make the map I was supposed to build with Galactan if he's fine with it, as I had to drop it that time because of having many other things to deal with. Even so, there are a few things I want to criticize about every jam map. I understand this was an event for fun, but that shouldn't mean we can't bring out more quality in the existing maps.
Title: Re: The Brothers Mapping Jam [FINISHED]
Post by: Galactan on June 07, 2015, 08:03:16 AM
Too late, I already junked every map fragment on my computer. Admittedly, it would be easy to recreate the fragment I submitted, but it seems pretty pointless by now.

Or just extract it from the map you did with Llama, which would save you all the trouble.

SUP EVERYONE
FREEMAN IN THE HOUSE

I'm sorry you had to read that.
Anyway, this topic is getting bumped again, what's the deal with that?

Decisions have been made to merge Jam 1 with Jam 3: PB&J into one healthy file so we don't need as million files hosted at once. That's neat.
But this also gives people a perfect chance to make any updates to either their Jam 1 or PBJ map if they so wish. This will be left open until 11:59 PM EST on December 15th.
So update your map if you feel the need to make some updates, because I know some people are interested, or don't if you're busy or something. I probably won't judge you.

Title: Re: The Brothers Mapping Jam [FINISHED]
Post by: Russel on November 19, 2015, 06:12:33 PM
Updates are updates.

Personally, I'd anticipate the base layout of a given map piece should still abide by the initial rules of the event.
In other words, yes you can change aspects of the piece to a degree. So long as the end result is still recognizable as the initial piece.

So a conversation with the regulars of C-TLMS (primarily Musashi) has turned up a few technical issues with some of the maps here.  I don't know if there are any plans to update this further, but I'll leave the list here.  This is mostly for the benefit of the relevant mappers.

A lot of this is probably common knowledge and I likely forgot something but I promised to compile it all and post it here.  Also, block monster lines aren't exclusively for classes-- bots use them too, and people tend to use offline skirmish around here.
