Title: The 2nd Cutstuff Duel Tournament of Champions
Post by: King Dumb on July 28, 2014, 02:44:40 AM
Thought we were done with summer-hype events? Think again! The last vanilla duel tournament MM8BDM saw was in 2012. As mapping events tone down and nothing else MM8BDM stands to occupy you, the time has come... the time to find the next Duel Champion.

No classes. No teams. Nothing to distract from the meaning of the competition. Just raw dueling; one-on-one, head-to-head action. Your will to win and be the best will drive you through this competition. This is the reboot, the redux, the sequel...

The 2nd Cutstuff Duel Tournament of Champions!

THE BRACKET

General Rules
(click to show/hide)
Instead of a group phase and a double bracket phase, this tournament will be a simple, double-elimination, bracket-style competition. That means that if you lose once, you will enter the loser's part of the bracket, and will still have a chance to win the whole thing!

As mentioned above, I will be updating the Duel Item Patch before the matches for this tourney begin.

This tournament, like all others, depends upon the commitment of its competitors. Not only skill, but determination and willpower as well will be your allies. Remember, this tournament is about more than winning; it's about conquering your personal obstacles and proving how good you can be. I'm going to make sure this tournament runs smoothly and briskly, so start training now! You'll need it; this has the potential to be one of the most competitive tournaments we'll see. So sign up, commit, and carry yourself to the top!

You blatantly say you're going to edit the Duel Items Patch before the competition, yet nowhere do you have listed what's banned in Duel as a result of using said patch. I think a list of removed weapons and items should be posted somewhere around here, for clarity's sake.

MMWTDW1 is banned because not only is it quite large for a 10 frag duel, but the layout makes it even more difficult to find and catch opponents due to the water, crushers, etc that hinder chasing.

MM6WIN is banned because of its weapon set. Wind Storm, Magnets, Rings, and Ballade force Leaf Shield, which forces Mega Buster or Fire Storm or Centaur Flash. Shapes up usually to be an unenjoyable duel centered almost entirely around stealing health.

I suppose making either open to mutual agreement does no harm, but MM6WIN tends to vary widely in terms of validity of the duel,

I feel that, if you ban MMWTDW1 for taking too long to duel in, it is only fair to ban MM3DW1 as well. There is literally nothing to counter mirror buster there, and, in the tournament environment especially, I am sure many would not hesitate to mirror buster all day. Of course, this is only the logical thing to do given the threat of the opponent doing the same.

Title: Re: The 2nd Cutstuff Duel Tournament of Champions
Post by: Fyone on July 30, 2014, 11:17:44 AM
I think you fail to see the point Killer Nacho is making. MM3DW1 forces you to use Mirror Buster if the other player is using it or you can't win. And Mirror Buster is an extremely hax-filled weapon with Hard Knuckle mixed in there and on top of that the map itself is small making health more competitive. You can still beat players using Ring Boomerang with other weapons though and even if it's R. Boomerang against R. Boomerang it's not nearly as hax-filled. Personally, I find this very similar to MM6WIN's case where it forces you to use Leaf Shield.
Title: Re: The 2nd Cutstuff Duel Tournament of Champions
Post by: Magnet Dood on July 30, 2014, 01:12:48 PM
Fyone, MM3DW1 makes Mirror Buster hacky because of Search Snake.

Just ask KD about it.
Title: Re: The 2nd Cutstuff Duel Tournament of Champions
Post by: Fyone on July 30, 2014, 01:44:32 PM
Search Snake is not the only reason, I've had many duels there where Search Snake wasn't even touched. It's usually Hard Knuckle/Mirror Buster/Bass Buster spam. I do know the trick you're talking about though.

The Duel Item Patch has been updated! You can grab it here. (http://www.best-ever.org/download?file=duelitempatch-v4a-3.pk3)

Check here (http://www.cutstuff.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=5922) for the changelog. Or below.

-- Mobility items that have been removed are replaced on maps by lesser mobility items.
-- Reggae removed
-- Skull Barrier removed
-- Plant Barrier causes users to take x1.3 damage while the shield is up.
I hope the competitors in this tournament will agree with that final change. The weapon is still usable, it is just now easier to outdamage a Plant Barrier user. If there is overwhelming negative reaction to this change from tournament participants, I will act. Otherwise, adjust your strategies!

On the subject of MM3DW1, I will make that map open only to mutual agreement.

Finally, since this tournament offers no medals, I hope no one will mind....

Ways to Contact: Cutmail, Skype (k1ngdumb)
Time Zone: EST (UTC-05:00)

EDIT: Also, as far as servers go. MM8BDM Duel Arena has a fraglimit of 10, Dojo has remained at 5 for now. Contact me or Michael if you need a fraglimit change on the Dojo. Otherwise, Dojo will be left for more casual duels.

And you all still have about 7 hours to sign up for tournament!

EDIT2: Grab v4a-3 if you haven't. Made one oversight in v4a-2.

Alright, after a couple hours of testing with Michael and help from Lego, the Plant Barrier damage increase desync has been -hopefully- resolved. Remember kids, don't put spaces in between actor definitions.

Grab it here! Same changelog, only no annoying purple color. (http://www.best-ever.org/download?file=duelitempatch-v4a-4.pk3)

EDIT: I will be absent when the signup deadline arrives. Any one signed up after 11:59 PM EST will not be included in the tournament. The bracket will be made overnight, and available tomorrow!

Lots of great matches going on! Great to see activity keeping strong.

That being said, there are two matches that will soon be holding up the rest of the tournament. Fyone vs. Awbawlisk, and more specifically Jman vs. Woohoo. I'm going to start needing some communication from these people (amongst yourselves and to me) about when these matches will happen. Mostly from Fyone, Woohoo, and Jman, because I see Awb all the time. Please make an extra effort to get these matches done by Monday at the very latest. I'd like to see Jman vs. Woohoo especially happen sooner than that since you two have had a longer time to arrange it. I am understanding of planned, prolonged (longer than a day) absences when I am made aware of them; for example, Korby told me on Wednesday that he would be gone all weekend. I need to be notified directly (Cutstuff PM is fine) about absences, and I also need to be made aware of attempts to communicate between opponents.

If the relative silence of Jman vs. Woohoo goes on much longer than Monday I will be considering organizer action.

EDIT: GBT and I have battled for glory.

Duel 1: MM4DRI - Gumballtoid's Pick
KD 10-6 Gumballtoid

Duel 2: MM3SNA - KD's Pick
KD 10-4 Gumballtoid

Those were two great duels, gentlemen!

Now, onto more business. It has come to my attention - via a message from Clay in a server that gave no time for follow-up response/question from myself - that Fyone and !o! Woohoo will be "absent until the end of the week." I am not sure whether this means Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.

For the purpose of making sure this tournament is not stalled any longer by these two matches, this will be strike 2. If Fyone and Woohoo do not make an active effort to communicate with their opponents and complete their matches at the end of this week, it will be strike 3, and their current games will be forfeited, placing both Fyone and Woohoo in the lower bracket and advancing Jman and Awbawlisk.

In the meantime, if I receive contact (via PM or posting here) from either Fyone or Woohoo, not only clarifying when you will be back but also informing me what actions you have taken to contact Awbawlisk and Jman respectively and schedule a time, then perhaps the above penalty can be lifted.

This is all in the interest of making sure the tournament does not grind to a halt because of these matches, which at this point are holding everything up. In addition, I am being harsher on Fyone and Woohoo than on Awb and Jman because the latter two I know are around often, and in addition have informed me in advance of any absences.

how did you find a pic of me irl

To be honest, I kinda look at this pic and the tourney standings and find myself amused that Smashbro is still here. I mean, no offense to him and I mean this in the nicest way possible, but everyone else left in the tourney are a bunch of big name duel frequents (with the exception of Kapus), and I think there's kind of a gap in skill level between them and him. It's kinda funny to see how Smash is still staying alive somehow. Even the person who beat Smash in the tourney already lost!

As this weekend brings with it the beginning of the last leg of this tournament, I want to take a moment to acknowledge a few people not among the 9 remaining contestants.

Firstly, to Wengar. For those who don't know, before this tournament, Wengar had hardly ever dueled. At all. And yet, he showed tremendous improvement in his incredibly close duel against Blackerman, which I unfortunately had to miss. Kudos to you Wengar, and I'm glad you joined this tournament!

Secondly, LlamaHombre and Magnet Dood. Both of you in particular have shown tremendous improvement and really a lot of skill in this tournament. Llama, I remember a long time ago you said that, while you thought you had decent footwork, your aim was terrible. I can safely say that this has definitely changed, in only the good ways. Dood, the results of this tournament really don't do you credit, because you have improved leaps and bounds since your participation in the previous Duel Tournament two years ago, and have really become a powerful battler.

Thirdly, I want everyone to recognize the awesome people of the Uber clan. It was fantastic seeing all of you come out and join this tournament. You're all great players and great people. Thanks to Blackerman, DarkWarlock, PandarusK, Boby, and Blazko for participating!

That's it for now anyway. Tune in to Doomseeker this weekend and the coming week as Fyone, Nacho, Woohoo, Kapus, SmashBro, Michael, Mendez, Sir Juicy, and of course yours truly  :ugeek: duke it out for the title of Duel Champion!  Good luck to the remaining competitors, and may the best bee thing/Smash Ball/Magnet Man/clown thing/Dorito/Burst Man/Ice Man/casually smiling armored dragon/Joker win!

Fyone was camping harder than Michael half the time

I watched as he literally stood still waiting for Michael to approach
while Michael kept hopping back and forth and attempted to pepper with Drill Bombs

really just seems like Fyone's got a little bit of (http://static-cdn.jtvnw.net/jtv_user_pictures/chansub-global-emoticon-18be1a297459453f-36x30.png) in his system

I never complained about anything. If you're talking about my subject line, I was referring to the last match where there was a huge campfest from both sides. If you want to take that as complaining that's up to you. I'm the one who always ended the campfests tho :PPP

This is false since the campfest started when Michael camped in the cave and got around 3 frags in a row due to me taking the offensive and chasing instead of leaving him to camp in the cave. I then later camped outside waiting 'till he came out (which he never did; so every time I had to be the one going in and trying to snag a frag).

What is the point of this message anyway? You know perfectly, in DUEL, you need to temporize A LOT, really. If you rush too much, you are sure to lose, even aganst a weak guy, so yeah. Duel is made with temporizing thing".

I got really lucky up to this point and only hung around so long because everyone else took forever to do their matches. I was expecting to drop like a fly once everything caught up to me.

Good games and good job.

Congratulations on winning yet another MM8BDM tournament.

You never lost a single match. Fairly impressive.
