Hold on, though. If the deadline is on Sunday, then what's the speedrunning medal for? Doesn't it go to the first one that submits a map?

I'm signing up and I'll prove to Maxine that I'm not the slowest mapper of all time!

How many speedrunning competitions have existed?
The way I see it there's barely any use for that medal; you don't want those medals collecting dust.
You wear them proud and brag to your friends.
The spontaneous and quick nature (including the restriction) of this event fit the medal quite well, don't you think?
It could just apply to any event thats done in a relatively quick fashion, say, this one.
Bring out that Quickman Medal.

Question...will all of these be compiled into a pack of its own or am I free to shove a map I make for this in my own pack?

Either way I'm signing up for this because hype.

I'm sticking to just 24 hours because I want to play video games
It'll be more than enough time anyway.

Also, remember that quality control is still going to have to apply as far as medals go. Rush hour all you want, but keep it in your best interest to keep your map enjoyable.

I'm asking because it doesn't make sense, given the nature of the medal.
Athlete - Won a Speed Running competition

See, for this to make sense, the first one to submit their map would get the medal and then there would be no further point to participating. That's dumb, and I'm pretty sure another medal would be more fitting for this.

You'll be moving at the speed of light to hopefully obtain this sexy medal!

Unless certain things don't apply, then you can just get another Fun Medal.
CAUSE IT'S FUN!

It says Speedrun first and Fun as a backup, Ivory said it was cool but he was gonna double check with Mike who has last say. So if Mike is like "nah son" then have fun medals instead.

Well, given the fact that there's a Speedrun Runner-up medal, I don't think it'll be allowed unless it's an actual competition. Don't take my word for it though, of course. This does look like a fun event, too.

Ahh I'm late to say we're go.
I'm so sick right now.
but go anyway

See you all in 48 hours minus 7 minutes.

Post by: Knux on August 30, 2014, 02:30:42 AM
Eh, I suppose I'll join as well, but I don't expect to get anything terribly good done (or at all.) Whatever.

Nevermind, actually. I can think up a ton of shit to do that's more fun than sitting on my sore ass for hours on end, trying to come up with a good map on a 48 hour limit.

Why yes, I still made half a map in two hours. Then I quit because I got stuck.

And we're in the final six hours! Whoaaaaaaaaaaa!

A quick note, if you're doing and are worrying about not having a super amazing map, I wouldn't worry about it. I say just do what you can to make it pretty good, because once the pack is released, there is absolutely nothing stopping you from making it better on your own outside of this thing.

I submitted mine a few hours ago. Just hope it's good enough.

And we're closed!
I'll be leaving a short grace period for submissions in case things went wrong or there are errors or something, but to my knowledge mostly everyone who wanted to do this have given me something already.

I'll have a pack out hopefully soon. It's been a fun short mapping thing.
Idunno.

OK I DID MY SPEEDRUN

PICK UP THIS PACK RIGHT HERE http://www.best-ever.org/download?file=falconmappack.pk3

YOU CAN GET 15 MAPS SPONSORED BY CAPTAIN FALCON HIMSELF!
Except not cause he's a fictional character.

Thanks to everyone who decided to do this in the super limited time frame.

And before everyone gets out their super "wow this map is trash" adventure, the point of this was to see what people could do in 48 hours so there are things that aren't quite perfect BUT THAT'S JUST HOW IT GOES WHEN YOU'RE LIVING ON THE EDGE!

FREEMAN OUT!

Okay I'm done

I wonder if anyone actually knew I was a map critic

EDIT: I shortened these a bit because I had a lot to cover. If you're gonna put one of these in a pack or whatever and want me to go into more detail I'd be happy to!

EDIT2 : Korby's skybox is also broken in software but that's a shit map anyway, also GUMBALLTOID AND BEED'S MAPS HAVE BUGGED WATER IF SEEN FROM BELOW in software, and on top of all of that Nemu's steam doesn't even work at all in software

If you were a good map critic, you'd give pointers on how to improve the maps you declared as "shit" and refused to review.

Hi I noticed you judged my weapon layouts for a good chunk of said review.
You don't criticize those.
Ever.
I've said it countless times that I'm not good at those, trying to teach me otherwise isn't going to be of any use.
(Although Tengublade is needed in order for the prank to exist)
I like the criticism despite me becoming near immune when I taste a certain flavor in said review.
You know what I'm talking about.

Some maps can be cool for duel :q

09 - Easy way out - Caprice
Fitting title. Big, bland, box map. Kinda ugly. I spawned on top of one of the walls on the outside once. Oops.
The title was more so referencing how I couldn't really think of a way to make the other half of the layout, so I went with symmetry because lazy. I wasn't going to make things boxy, but I felt there had to be something on the other side of the buildings; couldn't think of anything good so generic corner piece. I really messed up when it comes to spawning on the walls, though.

It'd be nice if you said why it was kinda ugly, and how to make it not-ugly, though.

Sorry Caprice. Probably disregarded your map a bit too eagerly because I thought it was a joke.

The main problem is the buildings. These often use what I would describe as 'interior' textures on the outside, and they look unbroken and mesh-y when repeated in high frequency. Main offender for this is the Burner green and black diamond tiles, which line the outside of a large majority of the buildings around. The interior, on the reverse point, uses a lot lot lot of blue and black textures, which are lined across multiple walls haphazardly and well, lazily. They aren't broken up, no pillars in the corner or anything, no real variety and burner textures are kind of bad to begin with. The exterior is MUCH prettier, except for the side houses which seem to use misplaced large blue textures with black lines. Also, these houses don't use pillars correctly, the sides should have pillars too so that every part of the pillar is exposed rather than being a separate texture on the sides, the misplaced blue. The grass, not as bad, but there's simply so much unbroken terrain that it blends into a blur of ugly green with barely any defining features. Using a black ceiling works with the outside linedefs, but not with the trees and random monking found in the centre.
Tengu is used well. Nature is used well.
You should be breaking up your textures to improve readability and using textures with less detail when applying them over multiple walls, so your walls don't blend and become ugly at a distance. Use a larger variety of textures and provide more visual focus in certain areas through use of small details and decoration to break up blandness meshing, and make things look overall more professional and lively.

Yes, you do. Weapon layouts are just as important as the map geography itself, and should be judged just as harshly.

Just because you're bad at something doesn't mean you're exempt from criticism.

We had a huge conversation about this yesterday on Skype, and it simply came down to "you simply can't teach Rozark to get better at weapon layouts, just trust Smash to do the layouts for him" or something like that. Either way, trying to stop people from bringing up flaws in your map sounds... eh, it's his choice, I guess I shouldn't butt in.
Title: Re: Cutstuff Mapping Jam 2: FALCON JOINS THE FIGHT!

Honestly weapon and item layouts come down to opinions and experience with weapon sets...playing modes like duel and deathmatch a whole bunch and seeing how weapon and item layouts balance out in other maps could help mappers get the experience they want out of their maps. This has been extremely helpful for me since I enjoy duel and small deathmatch games, so I obviously tailor my maps and weapon sets around environments and experience with those modes in hopes achieving a proper balance.

tl;dr - weapon sets, regardless of whether people are good at them or not, come down to the responsibility of the mapper to learn how weapons work and how strong they are in situations they see appearing within the maps they create.

Hello everyone! Bumping this thing after a few weeks.

So people had maybe fun times making maps in a short period of time, I dunno if you did or not that's not my job to say, and everyone played on them for a bit and at the very least, they were completed maps.

That being said, playing the pack it is very evident that well...these maps were made in a short amount of time, because they were. And why that's a neat little thing for when it first came out, it's not so neat now.
So here we are with starting the next version.

Basically, I want to release a polished and revised version of this pack to make the maps from "playable but ehh" to "hey this is kinda decent to play on!"
However, I can touch up my map all I want, that's not enough for revamp things. So if you've made a map for the pack and you want to revise your map, fix up bugs, change weapon layouts, Idunno, this is the time to do it! Basically the strict time limit is off, though I'm hoping a month is long enough for revisions to happen. If you have a revision, just PM me or send it over Skype.

However, for this revision there actually will be a little bit of quality control. So if some of the maps just don't get anything at all to make them better, they're going to be canned when the revision comes out.

Thank you all very much, and I'm hoping that some people might be interested in making their maps better without a strict deadline!
