Title: Mapping Tutorial for Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch?
Post by: Anonymous on October 01, 2010, 01:52:27 AM
Hi, I just played the game and it's so awesome that I want to start mapping for it :)

I have no experience in mapping for Doom. But I just started messing around with Doom Builder and it seems to be a lot like Build for Duke3d.

Unfortunately I have not even an idea what map format to select or how to import the 8-Bit Deathmatch resources.

Is there a tutorial? It would be great if you could give me some pointers on how to get started.

Try Skulltag (Doom in Hexen Format)

Thx, did that. I tried adding resources from megagame.wad, but apparently ther is only one texture in it?
Then added MM8BDM-SGC.pk3 and found more textures.
Trying to add skulltag.pk3 and skulltag_data.pk3 crashed the editor :|

So I built a simple room using textures from MM8BDM-SGC.pk3 and set a player start.

But I how do I test the map?
How can I edit the existing deathmaptch maps (Editor couldn't find maps in megagame.wad)?

I dunno if CutMan wants people editing off his maps or not. As far as textures go, a few different members ripped the graphics for those, so you might have to ask for their permission to use them too.

CutMan's planning on releasing the full game soon, too, so you might want to just wait until that's out. It will have the full roster of weapons and items to select from, and probably some differences that you'd have to implement anyways.

Of course, if you just want to make a basic Doom map on your own with default textures/your own rips or whatever to get ready, that's cool too. I have zero map knowledge so I can't tell ya how to test em : (

I thought there are already some guys (like Blaze) doing custom maps for 8BDM?

Yes, there are some (Me, Blaze) who have worked on custom maps.  However, since I didn't (and still don't really) know how to add the map without editing the game's pk3 file, the installation is a bit complicated.  I recommend waiting until the full game is out to make a stage so you have a full range of weapons to work with.  For building stages, google "Doombuilder".  Read any tutorials you find.

Ah ok, I hope the game will come out soon :)
Until then I'll get into Doom Builder 2. Looks really cool :D.
I used to work with Build so this shouldn't be too difficult.

The maps arn't in megagame.wad.

The maps are in MM8BDM-SGC.pk3.

Cool, just manged to open the official maps in Doom Builder :D
I'll try to replace the cutman.wad to test my own levels.
