Title: What exactly IS this?

It looks like some, star, thingy, and I can't seem to pick it up.
It just stands there in a few maps, doing absolutely nothing.
What is its purpose?

It's the Plant Barrier. Some weird glitch happened on the last release and so you can't pick it up and use it. Cutman already knows and is going to have it fixed for the next release.

In MM8BDM, the Plant Barrier slightly protects the user while slowly healing their health. Unlike other shields, the Plant Barrier cannot be shot, or used as a radius weapon like Star Crush; pressing Fire a second time simply turns the weapon off to avoid using up Weapon Energy.

Also, it doesn't work, that will be fixed in the next update though.
