Of course, and I didn't mean to suggest that you should. I've received some complaints about what I did and after I explained (basically the message I posted above), a few suggested that if I hated the admins so much or whatever that I should split off. Obviously as a player of a long time and who has played Skulltag (now Zandronum) since there were about ~5-10 active players on ALL servers, I'd also rather not split the community, which is why I decided to just shut down the servers.

Feel free to host your own BE though! It's completely open source: https://github.com/IvanTopolcic/bestever

If you need help hosting it I can help you out. Just message me on the forums here or message me on IRC (Jenova on irc.zandronum.com, irc.quakenet.org) and I'd be glad to help any person who wants to take over the reigns. I'll even port all of the megaman wads over and write a script to auto-import them into your database. I ran my servers off of http://www.soyoustart.ca which I've found to be cheap and reliable. I paid about $60 CAD (after tax) and the server was able to host about 200 Zandronum servers and handle 10s of terabytes of traffic per month.

I don't play megaman, but I'm sure if there was a server cluster specifically for this you could essentially avoid all of the non-megaman drama.

You can use TSPG (The Sentinel's Playground). They run a fork of the bot me and Watermelon created to let people host servers easily.

I've shared the sentiment that you guys aren't a part of the Zandronum community, but I am and so is BE. I wanted to keep hosting for Megaman and /vr/ stuff but I simply can't justify spending money and time on it at this point. BE is a part of the Zandronum community whether you think it is or not, and ultimately I am at the mercy of the Zandronum master server and a few Zandronum administrators which I believe are extremely biased and unfit for the position who I will not name.

I've hosted BE for 4 years and tried to be as unbiased as possible. Despite the fact that I absolutely hated Megaman (competitive doom idiot here), I allowed it because even though I thought these mods were terrible, I respected that people should be able to play what they want. The only things we blacklisted where things that affected the server's cpu, RAM, etc.

If you truly want to disassociate yourselves, then pay for your own servers and (optionally) use a different master server. Until then, don't be surprised when a player such as myself who has been a part of the doom community for 12+ years is fed up with a bunch of crap and decides to bounce. It's definitely a shitty situation for you guys but please try to understand my position.

The problem is that I've been running BE for such a long time that it seems like it's become a right rather than a privilege. It's not. I pay out of my own pocket to host servers that I never even play. You can complain that I'm taking the servers down and be upset -- that's your right. However, I find it extremely stupid to just berate me, as a few others have, for simply choosing not to host any servers anymore. I've tried my best to provide for the community for the past 4 years. Even when my servers were getting ddos'd which impacted my actual revenue stream (private game server), I kept the servers up because I genuinely enjoyed watching people play and be able to host servers.

The megaman community has been very pleasant to me and I'd like to think I've been rather pleasant to you guys. Obviously you are not the cause of the drama, but when a player of 12+ years has to leave (as multiple others have by the way, I'm not the first) over a specific group of players and poor administrators then maybe this indicative of a problem larger than "Jenova is a petty idiot!!".

There was another French player called Ch0ww who also used to host competitive doom servers, stopped, and left the Zandronum community for the same reason. I never see it mentioned how he was a petty idiot, simply because his servers didn't generate as much traffic. Obviously you guys aren't the problem here, but as long as Megaman is a Zandronum mod you will always be a part of the community. Whether you'd like to distance yourselves from it is up to you.

Hey just so I'm 100% clear, all of the servers (including non-megaman) are back, so feel free to host whatever. The moderation rule stays, though.

Musashi: I completely agree with you and imo it was a rash decision on my part because of my unpleasant dealings with certain members of the Zandronum community. I've re-enabled only-Megaman hosting for now.

The way I view the megaman community is not as a subcommunity of Zandronum but rather a completely separate beast from them. I understand this change will anger a lot of good genuine non-megaman server hosts, so I'm also considering a sort of whitelist (still up for discussion) for general doom server hosts.

If you want bans to persist from server to server, you'll need to add another config file to startup that just contains a bunch of banned IPs (addban 1.2.3.4; addban 2.3.4.5; etc). Of course this means when you ban someone you'll need to reupload your config. We won't touch these bans.

First of all, I'm going to preface this with sorry if this is in the wrong forum (not sure which is most applicable) but since I figure about 80% of Megaman servers are hosted on Best Ever, I would relay the information here. I know I don't play Megaman and hardly know anything about it, but I believe this is a pretty big change.

This is a copy of the post on Zandronum: https://zandronum.com/forum/viewtopic.p ... 84&p=98509

Here is the contents of the Zandronum post:

Hello everyone!

Because I have been extremely busy with school and other activities, I have decided to impose some changes on our current rules. Here are the new rules:

    1. BE will not moderate servers for its users. This will be solely up to the server owners themselves.
    2. Because of various DDoS threats, BE will not report the IP addresses of suspected cheaters to the staff. We will however relay the IP addresses if the staff manages to show sufficient proof that the user is cheating. This is to protect the players.

These two rules mean:

    1. The banlist has been completely wiped. Banned wads, however, will stay.
    2. If you think a player is cheating, please report it to the server owner (join #bestever and type .owner <port>) or report it to #staff. We will not ban any cheaters, as this is up to the master server administration.
    3. If you are being harassed, you can voice your discontent to the server owner (once again, join #bestever and type .owner <port>). They are under NO obligation to ban the offender, however. You can however, host a server with the same settings if you think you would do a better job at server moderation.
    4. You can be banned for ANY REASON. You can be banned for being from Peru, from Brazil or from Canada. Obviously I would never do this and I don't endorse it, but it is possible.

We understand that this causes problems for a large portion of players. A lot of people appreciated what the admins did, but I have little free time, and the free time that I do have I do not want to waste arguing with others or viewing 6 hour demos for cheaters, looking at logs, banning 600 proxies, etc. This is why we have delegated responsibility to the server owners.

We will be trialing this for the next few weeks and will potentially revert the changes if this causes a huge decrease in server quality. We're hoping that the "free market" will decide which servers are high quality and worth going to.

As always, since this is a forum, please feel free to voice any objections you may have. Obviously I'm not omnipresent and I do make mistakes sometimes. This could be one of those times. Feel free to discuss the rule changes, why you think they are good, why you think they are bad, etc.

Thanks for reading! Hopefully this change doesn't have a direct impact on your enjoyment playing Zandronum!

Just thought I'd pop in to address some concerns.

First of all, we're going to be addressing the empty server problem in a future build by pruning servers that have the least amount of playtime (time of players in server / uptime). We're hoping that this drastically reduces the number if unplayed servers.

As for the server resources, BE can physically handle a larger amount of servers. In fact, servers like chillax use an order of magnitude more resources than a few megaman servers would. The 101 server limit is just an arbitrary number that I picked out so that we wouldn't have too many servers. We're actually going to be increasing this number to either 150 or 200.

Thirdly, if you need to find out who hosted a server for whatever reason, you can pop by the zandronum IRC network (irc.zandronum.com) and join our channel at #bestever. From there on, you can simply type .owner <port_number> and it'll display which user hosted the server. If you want to request we take down a server because of inactivity, you can feel free to message us regarding that in #bestever because when we prune the servers right now (manually), I usually just shut down all of the servers with passwords on them.

Would it be possible to rename this wad without the ampersand (&)?

The reason I ask is because from experience, it seems that getwad and potentially wadseeker have a hard time fetching wads with special characters in their names, requiring users to manually download the wad from the repository instead of fetching it automatically for them.

So if i join the irc.zandronum.com #bestever i can host a server? cool!
I have a bad network.... so this will be really handy for me...
Not only that. You have to register in best-ever.org, register in irc.zandronum.com, then upload (or use) the wads and cfg files. After that all, you can easily start a server.
It turns out my at&t email is not liked by the website i need to try my other email...

We don't own nickserv, and we do not deal with emails (at the moment). The problem you are facing is most likely nickname registration and you may want to check in #staff to see if they can help you.

As for registering on the website, that is only if you want to be able to upload wads and configurations. If you'd like to host MM8BDM servers, I believe most (if not all) of the wads are available.

I have to ask, guys...

Do we need this many classes servers?

Seriously, 6 out of the 12 or 13 servers hosted by Best Ever contains the Classes wad in it. For Saxton Hale, it's 3 out of 4 servers. When everyone is playing in servers with wads you do not like to use, would you even bother playing? I may just go back to playing League of Legends with bots rather than try to relearn Classes all over again, and the former option is not too fun. Can't you guys just host anything vanilla for once?

The point of BE is to let users host whatever wads they want. The servers are started and administrated by the player who started the server.

Anyone can host their own server simply by joining irc.zandronum.com #bestever and following the instructions at http://www.best-ever.org/

Hello, I am the owner of the BE server cluster. I'd just like to remind players that if anybody has any concerns, or wants to start their own server, you may want to pop in irc.zandronum.com at the channel #bestever (assuming you cannot get ahold of the current administrator of the server).

Send Jenova or Watermelon a message on IRC. It's right there in the MOTD.
Watermelon wanted a separate master server for MM8BDM to cut it off from the Zandronum community.

There's no way he's going to help anyone from this game, let alone minor disputes amongst players that have been posted on the forums in the past (which are almost always complaining about vote kicks in servers).

At the very least, he might be able to solve problems relating to the zandronum client itself (like master server bans that happened on Skulltag) but it's very doubtful he'd offer help to anyone here. (If you don't believe me, just look at the last time he was here.) A good example would be the problem of map rotations in servers - although I believe King Dumb already handled that issue for his.

There are probably a few people on CutStuff already familiar with Zandronum, anyway.
Can't speak for Watermelon, but I don't really have anything against MM8BDM, so you might just want to message me instead.
