Hey all you mega fans! The mods are resting, so I'll be writing up this week's update. How fun!

This week, we're going to be looking at a few smaller details and a few things already shown off. Nothing too spectacular this time around, but even the little things are important.

First of all, let's look over that Q&A!

(click to show/hide)

Now then, let's take a quick look right were we left off last time and take another look at Pirate Man!

(click to show/hide)

Keeping with our underwater theme, let's move right back to another map that was known off rather recently, Dive Man!

(click to show/hide)

While we're on the topic of Mega Man 4, let's look at one more stage from that game!

(click to show/hide)

And those were only a few tiny map things we have going on. That's not even beginning to discuss some of the weapon balance changes that are being made during this version for healthier balance. Maybe we can look at one now?
Hmm, we'd need some flat open space to show this off properly...Oh, I know! Let's head on over to the Robot Master Museum and check this out!

(click to show/hide)

Until next time, everybody!

I might have been too hasty on Tornado, he just kinda made his way up there, but for the most part it seems to check out, yeah.

Hiya.

When it comes to judging competitions, I think the method I preferred the most was F2M's deal where both judges and the community weighed in. People who actually analyze the maps n shit have a lot of weight, but the people who play the game actually have a say in the matter as well. It doesn't ignore either side.

I'm going to be blunt, the reason judges are MIA from this is simply because, well, the lack of people to properly judge it. I sure as hell don't think people trust me enough to shove me on the table, and some of the people who have judged previous compos are either not around anymore, or have expressed interest in making maps themselves, and you can't really be a judge then. At that point, it's almost just asking to pick three random people from the community to be the judging panel, and see what happens, which is just a really small and kinda stupid community vote at that point anyway.

This shit isn't done til July, if I can manage to find a group of trustworthy judges who aren't all from the same house by that time period, hey, we'll add the judging panel to this shit. I like those. Get CutmanMike on the horn, I don't know. Make him rise from his grave to judge an out of nowhere CTF Compo.

MM8BDM Discussion / Re: MM8BDM v5 - Weapon Tuning (Atomic Fire)
« on: April 16, 2016, 09:07:01 PM »
Personally, I think Atomic Fire's main problem is the unlimited pressure it offers, rather than the fact it's an OHKO ripper. I don't think a size increase + lowering the damage, where it will still OHKO you (grazed shots are spared, that's nice I guess?) fixes the main problem with the weapon.

I do like damage somehow affecting the charge. Either by bringing it down a level or cancelling it completely (it really depends on how much damage we're talking about here). Someone else mentioned making the charge time longer and giving the midcharge some more love as well, and I feel like that would also be an interesting approach, especially if combined with the damage to lower the charge. (Obviously the damage should be more than just a mega buster shot. 30ish damage? Idunno)

It was declared that on the dark night of April 11th 2016, that Cutstuff would come together to make some maps for everyone's favorite and most played game mode.
CTF.

wait that's not right

Cutstuff CTF Competition 2: That's My Horse!

i don't know why it's called that don't whip me dad

Hey everyone, I'm Dr. Freeman, and welcome to the Cutstuff CTF Competition 2! Even though it's been freaking forever since the first one, I don't even remember when that was.

So what is this all about, you might be asking. Well luckily, this shouldn't be that hard to explain. It's simply a competition to make a CTF map in 8 Bit Deathmatch. How exciting!
There really isn't a gimmick besides that or anything, so usually where I'd have a few paragraphs explaining everything, I'm already done.
"But Freeman! No one even plays CTF anymore! What's the point?!"
i mean you're not wrong. it is really rare to see a server. But after two Finish That Maps, three Jams, and an INSPIRE, sometimes it's nice to mix up the type of maps you're making. And it's been a long while since CTF maps have been a thing. So why not have some fun?

Of course, like everything else there are some rules behind what's going on, so lets' go over them!

-It's a CTF map. That obviously means the map must be made with the Capture the Flag gamemode in mind. Two flags on opposite ends of the map. A spawn for one flag CTF. All that great stuff.

-As is expected, the maps also must have a symmetrical layout for that CTF goodness. Of course, there can and probably should be some texture differences on both sides so you can tell them apart.

-As always, if you don't use 8 Bit music i'm replacing it. have some class.

All the maps will be due on 11:59 PM, July 19th. No need to sign up, a finished map will be the sign up.
Now, you might be wondering why the hell it's due all the way in July when it's only mid April, that's like 3 months. WHAT KINDA SHAM ARE YOU RUNNING?!

To put it simply, this is a busy time of the year for a lot of people. There's school, there's work, there's probably some other things I don't know about. I think it's important that everyone has plenty of time to make something of quality and not feel like they're time crunched. So to account for all of this, I'm giving an incredibly open timeframe to make a good map. That doesn't mean you have to spend the entire time working on a map. Finish it in the first month if you want, or maybe you're busy but you'll have more time once June rolls around. I think it's important to make sure people have the time to make these things. Even if it means we'll be waiting a while to actually play on the maps.

Speaking of playing on the maps, this is indeed a competition and not just a for fun Jam. When everything is finished, servers will be put up for both CTF and One Flag CTF, and people will rank the maps from their favorite to least favorite. Judging will be entirely community based this time around and we will be lacking our usual panel of judges. Mostly because our usual panel of judges have elected to just have it be community based this time around.
"But wait, people can just band together and rig a winner then!"
i mean i guess
if you can get the numbers to make sure that one person wins a medal and nothing else. congrats then?
But at the very least, when voting does come around, I will not partake in it myself. It somehow feels fair that way even though it really doesn't affect anything.

If you're a winner, hey you get this piece of work.
If you're a runner up, get this instead. Cool.

Have some fun! Make some good maps! Don't only capture those flags, capture the hearts of the masses as well!

Anything Goes / this turned into a healthy convo. that's nice.
« on: March 26, 2016, 04:55:46 PM »
I almost feel like we're on two different pages here, and that might be my fault because I'm a shitter when it comes to wording things elegantly. Bandaid is good, I like bandaid. good shit. That's meant to improve balance in a popular mod and it works.
But to my understanding most of the complaining going on here is about a toxic community and people playing the game being shitters, less so about the general quality of the game itself (Bik's post was more focused on the game itself, but not so much most of the posts that followed). I fail to see how anyone is going to make a mod that patches out people being assholes on Skype.

People critiquing the game itself is fine, that's good. More power to that. It's when people are only trying to say 80% of the people playing are assholes that it becomes pointless, you can't patch that out. Unless I misunderstood your post, I think you said it yourself. Someone could make some really good content based off of game critiques, and that's good, but you can't force the people who play the game to act any differently.

curses, you found me out. my master plan of having everyone ignore these posts to watch the forums burn from the inside out has been foiled. Alas, what a world.

It's the same stuff that's been said constantly, "everyone sucks this community is dying" and yet no one is keen on changing anything, most of the people who have a problem with it in the first place have no interest in actually leaving or fixing anything if it bothers them so much. People can say things all they want, but with no action, nothing is or will be accomplished, and when people throw in the same points every other month, it kinda turns into whining.

Unless I'm the asshole the whole time, in which by all means please let me know.

you can call it shitposting all you want buddo
but you care too much about this shit that doesn't matter. every other month the trumpets go up, "guys the community is ass, guys we are all fuckers, guys we're going straight to hell, fuck everyone and their mother". at least bik sorta stayed focused on the game itself and had some decent points (albeit perhaps a tad extreme in some areas, but I don't think i've ever seen Bikdark hold back any punches so) but this has just dived right back into "community is dying send help" garbage

the best part is it doesn't even matter. what does a tiny community on the internet matter to anyone? if it shrivels up and dies then everyone can go on their merry way doing things that clearly won't upset them if every other thing this community does creates another drama corner.
nothing of value is lost of the forums die.
