Argus
(the silver Picket Man)
“Hey, exploration is life, and life is good, so let’s go!”
Appearance
Argus is a Picket Man, a special type of Met, with extra modifications. He is exceptionally shiny due to his body being mainly composed of silver. He has a variant of the standard-issue Met Helmet, with a working light on its front instead of a plus sign. His icy blue eyes add to the effect of his ever-apparent blank stare. He has a golden chestplate and greaves, with an emerald midpiece running around his chestplate. The joints of his arms and legs are made out of the purple metal Thaumium, the combination of iron and raw magical energy. Argus’s hands are covered with diamond gloves, and they usually hold a green striped shield with the TGOT Inc. colors printed on the front and a sapphire pickaxe. On his feet are dark gray loafers with a blue and green gradient running alongside them. There are holes present in his feet and in his arms.
Personality
He loves the thrill of exploration, and his mining expeditions with his fellow Picket Men fulfill his need to get out and look at the world around him. About 90% of the time, he has no idea where he’s going, but he doesn’t care because at least he’s going somewhere. He’s pretty content with being a miner. Of course, there’s usually the looming threat of hostile creatures roaming within the dark caves, so he always has his trusty pickaxe and shield on hand. Argus doesn’t enjoy combat as much as mining and exploring, though. He’d rather let the other Picket Men deal with the enemies, but sometimes he’s got to do what he’s got to do.
Backstory
One day, TGOT, the CEO of TGOT Incorporated, got the idea to create his own Mets, since he had taken in nearly all of Cutopia's Mets, so he ‘studied’ the existing designs of Mets and Picket Men and created a few of each, as a test. The first Picket Man he ever built was made out of silver (because he felt like it) and he gave it gold-plated armor and a few other accessories. It was to be known as Argus.
TGOT took Argus and a few other machine-made Picket Men down to his personal library, where they were given their first task. They were to survey a new region and then extract resources from it, if the conditions were optimal. TGOT threw an unlabeled book on the ground, revealing a swirling portal on its open pages. Before they leaped into the book, TGOT handed all of them satchels with green ‘Linking’ books, their only way back to their dimension. Without a Linking Book, they would be stuck there forever. With that in mind, the Picket Men went on their journey.
Argus immediately ran off in some other direction, eager to see what the world had to offer. His fellow explorers tried to keep up with him, but they eventually decided to let him be and went off elsewhere. Argus found a giant tree and was going to chop it down with his pickaxe, until a meteorite struck the tree and shattered it into several splinters. He was startled by this turn of events and decided to slide over to his friends, hoping that they were safe. He went into a cave, turned on his helmet's light, and saw that they were just fine. They agreed that the new world was unsafe and so they all warped back home with their Linking Books.
They reported back to TGOT, and so he took the meteorite-struck world’s book, ripped out some pages, scribbled in it, and threw it back on the ground, asking them to survey that new world. The other Picket Men weren’t too happy about it, but Argus was ecstatic, saying
“Hey, exploration is life, and life is good, so let’s go!”
Argus’s Equipment & Abilities
Standard-Issue Picket Helmet – These helmets are good for protecting against falling rocks and other hazards in the mines. Unlike the standard-issue Met Helmet, Picket Helmets are not indestructible. However, they can take quite a beating before even showing a dent or scratch. They also come with a helmet light, which can come in handy for mining expeditions.
Gold-Plated Picket Armor – Every Picket Man has armor that protects them from being completely crushed during a cave-in. Argus has his armor augmented with gold around his torso and below his knees. It doesn’t do too much for protection and weighs him down quite a bit, but it’s still pretty.
Chrysnium Picket Shield – A custom-made picket shield made out of Chrysnium, an alloy of Thaumium, emerald, and Love Essence. It has a diamond with the TGOT Inc. colors printed on its front side. It is slightly more durable than a Picket Helmet and protects against most hard impacts, although it doesn’t play well with fire.
Sapphire Pickaxe – A pickaxe made out of sapphires. Normally used for mining, but it can be used to stab or bludgeon enemies in a pinch. Argus can throw his pickaxe and generate more with his diamond gloves.
Diamond Gloves – Enchanted gloves made out of diamonds. They can magically generate more pickaxes, just in case his current pickaxe ever breaks or gets embedded in some bad guy’s skull.
Mimicry Equipment – An experiment by TGOT to see if he could give others the same abilities that changelings have; at first glance, it is simply a pair of dark gray loafers with a dark blue to pale green gradient running on their sides. As the Mimicry Equipment is still a prototype, it only allows the user to copy an ability of another instead of copying their entire appearance. Furthermore, the Mimicry Equipment is prone to short-circuiting. It also has the unfortunate side effect of giving the user’s appendages a Swiss-cheese look, boring holes in their arms and legs. Argus doesn’t mind too much, though.
Shield Surfing – Argus can take his shield and surf on the ground with it, making travel a lot quicker than on foot. Anything in Argus’s path will probably get knocked away.
Glimmer – Argus’s helmet light has two functions: a normal, strong light that can blind and a special green light designed for detecting nearby ore and gem deposits in mines. The special light’s strength increases the closer that Argus is to the mineral.
Quicksilver – Thanks to the raw magic contained inside his Thaumium joints, Argus can conjure a stream of mercury and cover enemies in it, poisoning them. He can also apply it to his feet for a speed boost or to his pickaxe for a damage boost.
