MM8BDM Discussion / Re: Great Players
« on: April 24, 2011, 03:39:58 PM »
Since everyone is doing it, here is my top five, as well as an explanation as to why:

1) Rawk Hawk: I do have to justify this, given who is in the 2) spot. He's the last duel tourney winner, and he won the possession tournament. If we're judging this by tournaments, he's clearly No. 1. Lately, though, I've been playing him pretty closely (10:8 loss in Tailsmk4's duel league), so I don't think he's leagues beyond the other players in this list. Still the best player on the servers today.

2) Kombat Kitten (SoniaNature?): It seems like whenever I try to pet the nice kitten, she(?) shows me her retractable claws. End result: I need stitches for all the claw marks I get. I don't know if anyone can dominate a duel like she can, and I'm pretty sure on her best day she could easily defeat Rawk.

3) Orange Juice: Extremely malleable and balanced, he can change his tactics to take advantage of a given situation. There are only a few maps where he isn't so strong, and this balance makes him a difficult opponent.

4) Lonewolf: Even without his "full canceling powers", he's still a dangerous opponent who can choose the right weapon in nearly any given situation. His only problem is he isn't quite as balanced as OJ is, and has trouble with a greater number of maps than OJ does. Given the right map though, he can beat anyone.

5) CutmanMike: It seems like whenever I play him, it's always a one frag difference between the two of us. The end result is I look forward to playing him because all the duels we have are exciting. While not the most skilled opponent, he might be the most balanced, and can win on nearly any map.

Also on the top 5 radar (in no particular order): SaviorSword, Tornado, Celebi, rTist, Kapus, BlueBrawl, FireStorm, Jack Corvus, Muzaru, Korby, -RanRan, and Yellow Devil.

It'd be interesting to see who really is the best by having a league with all of these folks; it'd produce some memorable games to be sure. Too bad I doubt everyone on this list would be interested.

Of course, I typically end all debate by proclaiming myself on the servers to be the greatest mm8bdm player of all time, even if it is just for the lolz.

Actually, I'll set up the leaderboard later. I want to get in a match or two before I have to go to bed. I messed up the way I wanted to sort the wins and losses.

If you want a match, I'll give you one.....

EDIT: 17 players, as confirmed. If we do not get 15 more players, then I will have to eliminate the player with the lowest score to make the brackets even. Looking at scores now.

Come on; even the NCAA has a play-in game!

Slow down guys. Most of the people that had matches already aren't officially signed up. lol (this is going to be a pain to find all of these scores...)

Someone asked how tiebreaking scores will be dealt with. Leave the math to me, but my plan is to look at number of frags scored and allowed in determining the seeds. I'm going to put these scores and such on something like an Excel Sheet (I have 2003, so don't worry about compatibility) for easy sorting. Otherwise, let me start gathering scores and such, and I'll post the leaderboard once I'm done with it. Things will be a bit slow at the start since I have a big school assignment due Thursday.

Rawk Hawk had the idea of posting all the scores on this thread under a single particular post, and updating it as necessary. I've emulated this idea on page four of this thread.

Also, can we have an updated list of the current entrants? I believe we have 17 players in this tourney, but also have 15 more slots to fill in order to reach 32 players.

Hey TailsMK4, what are the tiebreaking procedures in the event of tied records?

I think it should be:
1) Head-to-Head Matchup
2) Frag Differential
3) Total Frags Scored
4) Coin flip

Two games under my belt in this league, 29 more to go I guess.

Game 1: vs. Orange Juice
(click to show/hide)

Game 2: vs. SwissyDS
(click to show/hide)

So I am now 2-0 to start this tourney with a frag differential of +8. Not a bad start.

Also, how many players of the 32 make the playoffs after the regular season ends?

The tournament I was going to make was going to be something like this (except I would have made a 2v2 TLMS) but I tend to like this more.

I'll probably still host my tournament at some point, but it seems everyone else is wanting to steal my thunder (and make tournaments themselves).

With that in mind, I will sign up for this.

Name: rTist =HASTE=
Location: Unknown (currently US Mountain Standard Time)
Can you host?: No
What seed do you expect to get out of 32 players?: With my current record at 10-1 with a +61 frag differential, I would be in line for the #2 overall seed (Rawk Hawk currently projected #1 overall seed for the postseason).

EDIT: notes that its one game per opponent. Does that mean we have to agree on the map, and that it's to 10 frags each?

The Final has been played, and given the length of the first game, we all collectively decided that the first to two game victories would win the final.

The first game was on Knight Man.
(click to show/hide)

There were several maps in between this one and the next finished game; it was just tough for any of us to get anything going on some of these maps.

The second (finished) game was on Ice Man
(click to show/hide)

Again, several more maps were played (without any progress what-so-ever) until we reached Centaur Man
(click to show/hide)

The final tally was:
Rawk Hawk: 2 Wins, 8 Captures
rTist: 1 Win, 4 Captures
Kapus: 0 Wins, 4 Captures
Orange Juice: 0 Wins, 2 Captures

So Rawk Hawk won the tournament, with rTist as runner-up, and Kapus (assuming there was a tie-breaker on Captures) in 3rd.

All hail the victorious Rawk!

EDIT: My understanding is that the match will be posted to youtube, though I don't remember who recorded it. If I figure it out, I'll post a link.

I like Rtist's version better, although I think Squidgy, TheBladeRoden and other neglected people should be in there somewhere.

Unless they wanted mini-boss roles, maybe we could have a sequel that features them.

Mega Man Discussion / Re: Toughest Robot Master in Each Game?
« on: April 08, 2011, 04:24:47 PM »
I've played a lot of these, so I'll do some too (note: the fights are obviously easier with their weaknesses, but I give the ones that are hard with just the mega buster:

MM1: Elec Man
Reason: He's fast and his shots are hard to avoid. The room not being level is helpful, but it still doesn't matter occasionally. Ice Man is an honorable mention, but his attack pattern is slower and easier to avoid.

MM2: Quick Man
Reason: He himself isn't that difficult, but that terrain is difficult to deal with while dodging his boomerangs. Honorable mention to Flash Man, for mostly the same reasons (except he stops time while firing a spread of buster shots).

MM3: Shadow Man
Reason: His patterns, while not unpredictable, are quickly executed and difficult to avoid. If he was more powerful (like Elec Man, say), he'd be much tougher to beat. Honorable mention goes to Gemini Man, for having a split personality. Also, I think the toughest robot masters on average are in this game, but that's just me.

MM4: Bright Man
Reason: This is tough not because any MM4 robot master is particularly tough, but because they're all relatively easy. I choose Bright Man for his Flash Stopping ability followed by his accurate jumps. Honorable mention goes to Ring Man; he's fast, but his attack pattern is too predictable to matter at all.

MM5: Charge Man
Reason: This guy is more cheap than tough since he's so difficult to jump over accurately. Honorable mention goes to Wave Man, since his water wave attack is not so easy to predict.

MM6: Centaur Man
Reason: His splitting buster and his centaur flash, when he uses them correctly, are difficult to avoid damage from. However, none of these robot masters are particularly dangerous. Honorable mention goes to Tomahawk Man, for his long jumps and more varied attacks.

MM7: Slash Man
Reason: I haven't played this game in quite a while (I felt it sucked), so I reserve the right to change my opinion here. The last time I played this game, though, he easily gave me the most trouble, with his speed and varied attacks. Honorable mention goes to Shade Man since he can fly and since his shots are generally more powerful than the typical robot master.

MM&B: Dynamo Man
Reason: Whether you're Mega Man or Bass in this game, Dynamo Man's attack pattern is varied and difficult to predict. He also can recharge his energy in combat. Honorable mention goes to Burner Man, since his Burning Wave can deflect shots (but if you're Bass, you can double jump and diagonally fire downward at him to get hits) and also for the spikes.

MM8, MM9, and MM10 I have yet to play, so I have no opinion there.

Easiest Robot Masters in each game (with just the mega buster):

MM1: Guts Man
Reason: He's way too slow and predictable to be any challenge. Dishonorable mention goes to Bomb Man, for the same reasons.

MM2: Bubble Man
Reason: He's too weak to be any major factor. Dishonorable mention goes to Wood Man, for being too predictable and slow.

MM3: Top Man
Reason: His attack pattern is way too predictable to be a challenge. Dishonorable mention goes to Hard Man, for the same reasons (though if he hits you, it's going to hurt a lot).

MM4: Toad Man
Reason: Do I even have to state why? Dishonorable mention goes to Dust Man, since his attacks are slow and his movements predictable.

MM5: Star Man
Reason: Only one attack and a bunch of movements in low gravity that are easy to dodge. Dishonorable mention goes to Stone Man, for being Toad Man with an actual (albeit easy to dodge) attack.

MM6: Plant Man
Reason: He only has one attack, so he's far from dangerous. Dishonorable mention goes to Flame Man, since his attacks are too easily avoided.

MM7: Spring Man
Reason: Again, his attacks are too predictable. Dishonorable mention goes to Burst Man, also for being too predictable.

MM&B: Cold Man
Reason: Much too basic of an attack pattern. Dishonorable mention goes to Ground Man, since his attacks are easily dodged if you know what he's doing.

This was just in my own view who the characters should be. If anyone has a better idea who should do what, I'm willing to listen.....

I could make a strong case for leaving it as is, but also a strong case for changing a lot of it. If we could all come to some sort of consensus, we could have enough backing from this forum to actually have someone create this game.

If someone did make a game like this, it'd be epic.
