Anything Goes / I'm considering making a topic for 8BDM yo momma jokes.
« on: January 14, 2014, 07:26:18 AM »
You know you've played too much 8BDM when you start making 8BDM-themed yo momma insults.

"Yo momma so dumb, she thought Ballade Cracker was a kind of food!" and so forth.

A nice collection of music. It's not often you see the Ukulele listed as one of a person's main instruments! Or perhaps I'm not looking in the right places. Not that I have been looking, but that's irrelevant. I'm also interested in making amateur music recordings (hopefully I can try to make some of my own over the next few months), so it's good to see stuff like this around Cutstuff.

Well, I said I had several things to post at a later date, but I decided to save them for a personal project. I'll probably advertise it around the forum when it's ready. In the meantime, have this thing I dug up from one of my various notebooks.

Cutstuff Discussion and Feedback / Man, I miss vanilla TLMS.

Oh, and a small thing to note: Roboenza was what brought me here back in 2011. Not the normal game itself.
Come to think of it, Roboenza was what attracted me to MM8BDM as well...although I immediately disliked it and started playing vanilla TLMS when that was popular. Mainly because I wasn't used to my consistently high ping and I sucked as a zombie, but my petty reasoning is irrelevant; I came to enjoy the core game immensely.

More importantly, thinking back, I was attracted to MM8BDM by the Shagg/Kit/Rose videos of Roboenza. So, from experience, promoting MM8BDM on Youtube is effective, to some extent. -Ran, if you did post videos of MM8BDM on Youtube as suggested in your conversation with SSW, that would be great. I'm sure it will have some sort of positive influence.

I will not scrutinise -Ran's approach, mainly because it is irrelevant. I think it was King Dumb who said that although presentation is crucial in real life, it can be excused in an online environment. -Ran shows concern for MM8BDM, regardless of intention or method, and I respect that.

The following may be slightly irrelevant, but a thought occurred to me after reading King Dumb's post in the State of the Servers topic concerning disinterest in the community. I will state my interest and activity in the community; I know this topic is not about individual stories, but I will attempt to draw a discussion of a wider portion of the community from it.

It is likely that I contribute to MM8BDM more than I play it. No matter how often I play MM8BDM, I still regularly open up Slade and Doom Builder 2 for mapping purposes. Perhaps it will reach the point where I grow disinterested in playing the game, but continue mapping because it is my hobby (or I don't know any better). But as a developer, I believe that my direct contributions to the game allow me to, by extension, contribute to the community positively. I admit, things will not remain this way; I am already close to finishing my mapping obligations for MM8BDM v4a, and as such, subsequent contributions will only be for external mods (at least until I am needed for another official expansion). But even then, as long as I can provide some variety in servers with my contributions, and it does not go unplayed, I believe I will still contribute positively.

From this, let's define two stances in this community from this: internal and external modders. Internal modders are developers. Simply, as long as a developer creates content for the game (and it does not detract from it), it is a positive contribution. It is true that there can be a disconnect between developers and the game. However, I do not believe such a disconnect is an issue as long it does not alter a person's judgement. External modders covers everything beyond internal modders. Even external mods can contribute to the community positively. Roboenza, Rage Roboenza, Classes and Saxton Hale: yes, the community is guilty of falling into a rut by over-playing each one, but there was a period where each one was the 'next big thing'.

I know this is a gross oversimplification, but one solution to the community's stagnancy is for the next 'next big thing' to occur. Much easier said than done, yes, but I say this to emphasise that the power to 'save the community from the oppression of Saxton Hale and/or Classes' as one might put it is in the power of any modder's hands. If you can identify with me, and contribute to MM8BDM more than you play it, you can still positively contribute to the community as long as your mods do not go unplayed or unreleased.

A writing-based equivalent to 'anyone's art thread'? This seems right up my alley. I've been exercising my narrative ability recently, so I've got several things to potentially post at a later date.

In the meantime, I was bored, so I wrote up a paragraph related to MM8BDM; it's based on my experience in the unfinished MM8BDM Olympic Games.

Oh, this died? That's disappointing. "But why, Shade, would that be disappointing to you? You died ages ago," you may ask. But did I!?!?!?!?

I was revived by Ivory overnight on turn 4, with the following role:
(click to show/hide)
The only hint at this occurrence was small paragraph included in the events of night 4, a '...?' being added to my obituary and the number of CrackHack players increasing by one. So, I could have dished out up to 6 damage in a vote and passed it off as a joke, since people wouldn't have thought I was still playing. And if all other CrackHack players died, I could have done absolutely nothing and let the innocent players accuse and kill each other while they sought the last CrackHack member. It's a shame I didn't get to execute this admittedly-ridiculously cheap strategy. But blame Smash for allowing such a strategy to exist.

Anything Goes / You know you've mapped too much for MM8BDM when...

You know you've played too much MM8BDM when you start judging real-life buildings based on their capability to host a game of Deathmatch. Minimal camping spots, choke points and dead ends, the works.

I like the idea of Energy Exchanger, since it compliments and extends upon the Energy Balancer. Although, would Energy Balancer's functionality take precedence over Energy Exchanger's? That is, since Energy Balancer makes it so when picking up ammo while the selected weapon is at full ammo, it is given to other weapons, would that mean the Energy Exchanger would only heal you from picking up ammo if it cannot use the ammo to fill other weapons (ie. every weapon is at max ammo)?

Projects & Creative / Re: [Map Pack] SHARP (Version 2a)
« on: September 24, 2013, 10:13:56 AM »
Please. There's no need to tell Kraven off for asking, and there's no need to post to make a self-acknowledged (and incorrect) guess concerning the question at hand. Leave it to me to satisfy all your SHARP-related needs!

I have received a PM asking about music codes once before, so I've put a list of music codes and music credits (inside the spoiler underneath 'music codes/credits') on the front page for anyone who wants them. Check it out!

And since this was bumped, I should probably say this: SHARPv3a is in the works, and will include an additional 5 maps by yours truly. In fact, it's been in the works for quite some time, and I've done a good portion of the work. However, I've been preoccupied with mapping for MM8BDMv4a (core maps take precedence over custom maps), so I don't know when I'll get around to finishing it.

Here's a preview for anyone who cares, though.

Well, I did encourage people to have their own opinions and make their own accusations, so turns don't end up in a 'too hard to turn the tides against the bandwagon'-type situation. At the very least, I expected Spikeboy to say something. I'd hate to be in the wrong when pursuing a player, you know. Hopefully, the size of this bandwagon hasn't deterred anyone who knows more than me from trying to vote for someone else.

Oh well. I guess my evidence was too concrete. And besides, we've gone too far -- it would be borderline unacceptable for this bandwagon to fail now!

Well! One of Accel's abilities was activated by posting something in the thread. I guess Lego's theory that some abilities can be activated by specific phrases in the thread was right.

I agree that Magnet Dood is a suspect. He reacted quite excessively when Accel was clearly just used to voting somewhat randomly in the opening turns of a Mafia game (which isn't an outlandish playstyle at all; it happened in most mafia games I've played on Cutstuff). And Dood's argument that it was customary to abstain contradicts his very first action in the game, pre-Alice shenanigans, when he voted for Yellow Devil with little reason.

However, I'd like to accuse another player so this turn doesn't fall into shambles like the previous one, where everyone ganged up on one (later revealed to be innocent) player. Imagine if Accel wasn't able to save himself! Players who thought he was innocent didn't have anyone else already accused to vote for to save him. There was Thunder Electros, but he was accused too late for his votes to overtake Accel's.

Looking over the thread, two bandwagon lists posted by Jax caught my eye.
Quote from: "JaxOf7, on the initial Alice bandwagon, "
1. Korby EDIT: no
2. Laggy
3. Mendez
4. Spikeboy
5. Tengu
Quote from: "JaxOf7, on the Accel bandwagon, "
1. Magnet Dood
2. Ivory
3. Thunder Electros
4. ThePlayer
5. Magikarp
6. Spikeboy
And Spikeboy's on both lists. Could be a mafia member, jumping onto the backs of 'safe' bandwagons to avoid suspicion.

+Vote Spikeboy

Let's spread the love! Throw in a few more competitors in the running! It's the third turn, surely people have begun to suspect others enough to stop abstaining. Let accusations fly wildly.

I'm slightly curious to why he commented during the beginning of that night phase, even if it was a simple "Oh."
Quote from: "Mendez, on page 19, "
oh
Probably a simple reference to this.

Looking at the damage values, there appears to be a few damage-based abilities floating around:
Something causing Mendez to end up on negative damage. If someone else used it on him, it may suggest he is of some value to other players. Or someone just felt like being helpful and decided to save the dude who was playing Mafia for the first time. And that's assuming it wasn't Mendez's own doing, which would mean it was simple self-preservation.
Something causing Ken to end up on 6 damage, when only one person publically voted for him.
Something damaging Hilman, even though no one publically voted for him.

Who do these abilities belong to? Why did the player with the role of Shade Guy have to die so early?
Your questions left unanswered and more, next time on 'These Are The Mysteries'.

Oh, and I'll abstain for the time being. I'm just putting forward speculation for other people to jump to conclusions.

And to confirm, regular votes deal two damage, right?
