Bollocks. If you're trying to take someone down with a pistol, what's wrong with you? And for "leagues ahead", let's go to my favourite CoD game for an example. In Modern Warfare 2 you get the UMP45 and the M4A1 AT LEVEL ONE, which are considered some of the best guns in their category. Black Ops is similar, with the community's favourite AR being unlocked at Level 14ish. And I don't own Modern Warfare 3 yet, so...

It's funny because you start the game with pre-made classes in which you do not start out with a pistol (it's a secondary weapon for Christ's sake!)

If I can't kill anything I can't level up and if I can't level up I can't get guns
 
It's impossible to get 0 kills (unless you join the game when it ends, or you're just horrible, and don't try)
