Anything Goes / Re: Cutstuff War Part 2: Descriptions
« on: January 20, 2012, 02:44:50 AM »
Time for my final character...

Character Four
Name:
Veras
Appearance:
Veras is of average-tall height. His hair is black and short-cut. His eyes are blue. He is is approximately 23 years old. He wears a tattered black, hooded cloak, with black boots and black pants. One bracelets, grey with no markings, are worn on his wrists.
Backstory:
Veras knows he was teleported to this dimension to fulfill a purpose, but he does not why, how, or what. He has always been a wanderer, roaming the lands of his homeworld, with no destination or goal. He simply traveled, not for the joy or excitement of the activity, but because he had nothing else to do, nowhere else to go. He had been blessed and cursed with strange powers, powers that no one would ever speak of, for fear of... something.
Personality:
Being alone for nearly all of his life, Veras is somber, solemn, and quiet, yet also collected; he has learned to cope with being alone. He rarely smiles, but he has never known fear. He hasn't been able to afford being afraid. However, beneath this controlled personality is buried a turmoil, an unconditional hatred and rage. Veras knows this exists inside him, but he has learned to control it, to keep it suppressed. He dreams of his destiny, hoping it will somehow help the world, help to cure it of the terrible things he is cursed with.
Weapons:
Veras carries only two weapons. The first of these is a blade concealed beneath his cloak. This blade, however, is unique. It is exceedingly crooked; though it is the length and width of a normal double-edged blade, it zigzags from the hilt to the tip. It is bright, shining silver.
His second weapon is far more mysterious. In a secret pocket on the inside of his cloak is a shard of glass. When Veras throws this shard, it transforms into a weapon, made of pure light energy. Veras has limited control over what that weapon will be. For example, when thrown like a boomerang, the shard will transform into some kind of boomerang. When thrown like a javelin, it will transform into something that can be thrown effectively in such a way. Once the weapon hits something, it will disappear, and the shard will return to Veras' pocket. The weaker Veras is, the weaker the weapon; conversely, if Veras gains more power, the glass shard becomes more powerful.
Abilities:
Veras' eyes are strange. If he concentrates, he can see auras surrounding others, representing the energy or power of the person the aura surrounds. The color of the aura indicates the nature of that energy or power; the aura's intensity and size correlate to the level of that energy or power; and, the more circular the aura, the closer to their maximum potential that aura's owner is.

At any given time, Veras' life force is tied to an object. If he lets this strange power work naturally, the object to which his life force is tied will be nearby, and will change to a new object when Veras and the object are separated. Depending upon the energy interferences in the area, it can take Veras anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes to identify the object to which his life is bound.  If he can muster the power, Veras can choose an object to which to tie his life force, and he can sometimes maintain this tie even when the object is no longer neaby. No matter the case, Veras cannot be killed as long as the object to which is bound remains in-tact (Veras can still be weakened, exhausted, hurt, etc.); conversely, if the object is destroyed, Veras too will die. Some objects have energy auras of their own; Veras can bind himself to these objects, with proportional difficulty, and when he does, he becomes stronger, and, of course, more difficult to kill, as the object is more resilient. At high energies or high power, Veras can transform his shard into any weapon he pleases, thrown or not.

Time to enter the fray.

Character One
Name:
Aurora
Appearance:
Unarmored Form - Aurora is donned with gray robes and light mail armor (the color of silver, though of a material far more resilient). His hair is loose, light brown, and shoulder length. He is an elf, and thus he has pointed ears, and is approximately seven and a half feet tall.
Sheathed in his belt is a long, silver (same material as his mail), double-sided blade. On his back is his bow, though only its stock. When he uses it, and performs the motion of drawing it, its string and an arrow materialize as gold energy.
Armored Form - Aurora can don a suit of gold plate armor, including boots, plate legs, torso armor, and a helmet that covers his head and only the bridge of his nose on his face.
Backstory:
Aurora was originally under the title of Grand General Atonius Kagar, and was the leader of the army on his elven homeworld. However, his world was besieged by an enemy, and he escaped through a portal he accidentally summoned. He seeks the source of his sudden displacement and his newly discovered powers.
Personality:
Aurora is currently stoic, quiet, and a wanderer. However, as a general, he was popular among his men, as well as a close confidant of his king and a capable diplomat. He had an insurmountable loyalty both to his king and to his ideals of justice, and the idea of rewarding those who do good and punishing evildoers.
Weapons:
Unarmored Form - Sheathed in his belt is a long, silver (same material as his mail), double-sided blade. On his back is his bow, though only its stock. When he uses it, and performs the motion of drawing it, its string and an arrow materialize as gold energy.
Armored Form - In his armored form, Aurora summons a double-sided scythe with a golden blade and silver handle bar. If you want a different visualization, imagine Marluxia's weapon. Make the staff part straight, and put another blade 180 degrees from the first, make the blade gold.
Abilities:
As a general rule, Aurora is a highly resilient mortal. That is to say, it would take many eons for him to die by age, though he can be killed in unnatural ways (being killed) like normal people. In either form, Aurora can cause pillars of energized, rainbow-colored crystals to shoot from the ground (touching these without proper protection will inflict much pain in the form of 'electrocution').
When Aurora is in critical condition, he can sometimes muster the power to summon his secret power, which consists of the summoning of a large dragon made of the same rainbow crystals Aurora can erect (this is of course optional implementation-wise, I just wanted to list all his powers).
Of course, Aurora is very skilled with using his bow, sword, and scythe.
Other Notes:
Aurora can be led astray by his unshakable devotion to his ideals; he will fight those that he would once regard as allies if he feels his loyalty or ideals are threatened.

Character Two
Name:
Sephra Reggiscon (SEF-rah REG-i-scone)
Appearance:
Sephra is clad in dark grey (in contrast to Aurora's light grey) robes, though these cover his torso and his upper legs (loosely). His legs wear black-ish grey mail and plate leg armor. He wears a cloak of slightly lighter grey than his torso robes. His shoulders and chest also sport small plates of silver armor. His robes are in slightly tattered condition, though his cloak is undamaged. His hands and wrists sport gauntlets. He is bald, and of above average, but not outstanding, physique.
Backstory:
Sephra is known as the 'King of Thieves' in his realm, though he is much more. Although he infamously plundered many tombs of past kings of his realm, as well as other ancient and sacred temples, he is more than a petty thief. He seeks power above all else, and, although originally this was his primary goal, enlightenment and a short partnership with a far more evil lord, he has found it a nice bonus when established organizations of power are toppled on his path to power. He currently has no allies, friends, or subordinates.
Personality:
Sephra is similar to many stereotypical villains, though minus the lackeys. He is highly confident, with an evil laugh, and very intelligent. He always is planning to be one step ahead of those who seek to put him to justice. He hardly ever loses calm, though he takes evil delight in punishing his enemies.
Weapons:
Sephra has only one weapon, which he can materialize at will. This weapon is a spear made of tinted-green dray metal. The spearhead is the shape of a partially opened crab claw, though with the inside filled in. The point still points in the same direction as the spear itself.
Abilites:
Sephra can attack quickly and ruthlessly with his spear, but the weapon also carries a second ability. He can use its magic powers to animate robots, cyborgs, golems, statues, and dead bodies and control them (he doesn't directly control them; they basically follow his orders and attack for him, often to let him escape or distract his pursuers. It can also summon and reanimate the bodies of those he has slain, for the same purposes.
His gauntlets can shoot balls of purple flame.
He can summon a handful humanoid ice demons at a time, though this drains his power (until he can acquire more), and he cannot use any of his other powers for a few hours.

Character Three
Name:
Docter Kyrgyzg.
Appearance:
Dr. Kyrgyzg (I'll cal him Dr. K, but he doesn't go by that) is a human, however in a lab accident his body was maimed. His arms scalp, and the left half of his face are robotic (note that his brain is not robotic, only his scalp). His legs have been replaced with a metallic dome (round end facing down), with a diameter matching the width of his torso (he is an average bodied man). His torso is covered in a light, mechanical armor, spotted with nodes. His spinal cord has been replaced with an artificial one, and on his back is mounted a rectangular hub from which extend eight insect-like limbs (pointed ends, two joints excluding the one located on the hub). He uses four of these as legs, and four (two on each side) as extra limbs.
Backstory:
Dr. K was shunned by his peers for his questionable exploits in robotics. His accident was caused by one of his many experimental battle robots going put of control. He supplied the Kazos (the species that invaded the elven planet) with mechs and sentries. After his accident and the retreat of the Kazos, he has spent his time trying to find a way to create the ultimate cyborg weapon to exact his revenge on sentient beings.
Personality:
Normally, Dr. K is diabolically-minded, always scheming bitterly. However, he has outbursts of rage, and he always wants to be in control.
Weapons:
Holstered in his belt are two standard laser blaster pistol. His insect limbs are sharp at the tip, like blades, and he can use them in combat brutally.
Abilities:
Dr. K is very intelligent, especially in mathematics, engineering, and other such fields. He is of course a master at creating, modifying, and programming robotics; one of the best in history, in fact.
He can climb most walls (only very flat ones can he not) using his limbs, as would a spider.
His dome houses a variety of tools, from tools used in robotics to torture devices.

Ivan first:

Quote
* I suppose what watermelon meant by "unique" balance was that the type of balance is unique to what it was in GvH. In old GvH it was ghouls rape on small maps, humans rape on big maps. Now, it's pretty equal I'd say.

You suppose? I'd like to here it from him. Again, I reiterate, in no way is balance unique, not even in comparison. Perhaps your new classes are unique, but I couldn't care less about that right now considering that does not result in balance. Then you've made two claims. The first is an enormous generalization that I'm sure everyone here and elsewhere who played GVH will say is not always true. The second is the opposite of the bulk of my post, which you attempt to rebuke in your next points.

Quote
* The point of the melee class is to supress the incoming mass of ghouls and slow them down or kill them, if possible. Mind you, many classes aren't IDEAL for an average player anyway, say Jitterskull. Barbarian has a unique gameplay which you need to spend probably more than 15 minutes to understand. I don't agree with you saying 15 minutes is enough to understand the changes. There are many reasons we added these, and they are there to be found as you play, not just "looking over" changelogs.

The point of the class and the classes ability to perform its intended role are different. Of course his purpose is to kill the Ghouls; that's the point of the mode. The Barbarian does not perform this role; my post explains why. You say classes aren't always IDEAL for the average player; by this I take you to mean that some classes are trickier than others and require more skill. Of course a class' potency increases in the hands of a skilled player. The problem is that the Barbarian is fundamentally ineffective, and the ghouls are fundamentally more likely to win. This is not the case when balance is present. Every class has different gameplay, that's why they are different classes. Again, your assertion that I don't understand your reasoning is pointless; the reality is what matter, and the reality is that the Humans are fundamentally outclassed by the Ghouls. I can look at or play as every class in 15 minutes. That's all I need to see that the Ghouls have been given powerful ranged attacks, which destroys the balance.

Quote
* The whole "melee vs ranged" thing is quite disturbing to be honest. It's monotone and clichés ridden. Apparently, people don't like getting used to changes so that's where the problem is based on mostly. Changes are everywhere, whether they are for the worse or better. You just try to get used to them. (Or delete NS from your harddrive, lol)

It's not monotone or cliché, it's the foundation of the mode. It has been identified many times by credible sources (if you need an example, check out CutmanMike's New Years blog post on this site) that the foundation of the balance of GvH is ranged vs. melee. It's not that your changes require 'getting used to' or that we are opposed to change. And indeed, some changes are bad and some are good. But in this case, our issue is that the changes that you have made and that are under your control are awful, and you refuse to recognize this. I won't get used to changes that ruin an otherwise fun gamemode when those changes are reversible.

Quote
* "Hardly believable" vs "Statistical Information", it's not hard to see that many witness such scores, otherwise they wouldn't say how they love the new tie music we put right ! (We should really take notes of scores of each round btw. (I know watermelon will actually do that))

Provide credible statistical information and I will concede this point. Until then, since we have no way acquiring credible statistical information currently seeing as you 'can't post the logs', only analysis of the gamemode can determine its balance. You've failed to prove to me that your mode is balanced; I've succeeded in proving it isn't.

The Ghoul's Forest / Re: Discuss your honest thoughts on GVH Nordic Saga.
« on: January 02, 2012, 08:38:51 PM »
Alrighty, time I spoke up.

Firstly, my issues. Plenty have spoke up about non-gameplay stuff such as the wad size, graphics issues, etc., so I won't comment on those but to say that they ought to be fixed.

Now, the first thing I will address is balance. As has been pointed out in this thread, the previous thread mentioned by DTD, and NS's old thread (and I believe the new one) on the Skulltag forums, the problem is that you've ruined the delicate balance of the mode. In GvH, balance was maintained by the fact that (as a general rule), ghouls were equipped with strong, close-range weapons, while humans were equipped with weaker, longer-range weapons. Looking at the pre-NS cast, you can see this was the case. On the Ghouls' end, you have Jitterskull, Creepers (and don't try to argue with Creeper's stun ball, this is not lethal), and Chokes. On the Human end, you can see Cyborgs, Ghostbuster, and of course Marines. Sure, you'll find things like mines and detonators on the human end, but these are largely compensation for the Humans' lack of damage output compared to the Ghouls (Ghouls have to get up close to kill, they are very powerful, a good balancing countermeasure is to give Humans mines, etc).

Now, what has NS done to this? Well, as many have pointed out, you've added melee to Humans and ranged to Ghouls. I don't see many using Barbarian, and I'm going to assume that's because he can't do very well in the hands of the average player.
Say it's 5v5. Everyone picks random. Humans come up with Barbarian plus 4 pre-NS, ranged classes. Ghouls come up with Ice Demon plus 4 pre-NS, melee classes. The Barbarian goes to attack close up, it's now 4v1.

That leads me to the Ghouls. My oh my. While a melee class added to the Humans is highly ineffective, ranged classes on the Ghouls is very effective... in empowering the Ghouls. The ranged attacks I'm referring to are those of Ice Fiend, Frostbite, and Defiler in specific. Now, when the humans employ their normal (and really only effective, mind you) tactics, they are immediately flushed out by these powerful ranged attacks. In the chaos produced by Frostbite's dazzling attacks, the Ice Demon's very difficult to dodge icicle attack, and the obstruction provided by Defilers, the melee ghouls, who once had to deal with coordinated and deliberate fire from the Humans, can now come in and wreck havoc.

Seeing as you've managed to avoid or 'filibust' the previous arguments on this point, let's look at another way shall we? Humans have quite a few classes with weak-to-medium long-range weapons, with a few close range weapons that cannot be reliably used as primary weapons (grenades, mines, etc.), and a melee class. Ghouls have quite a few powerful, fast melee classes with a few medium-to-powerful, long-ranged classes. Which sounds more powerful?

You've claimed that you have 'added' 'unique' balance. Firstly, balance is not something you add. It is not a sum or value that you can increase in order to become better. Balance is a state of things. To put it in a visual, balance is when both sides of the scale are on the same level. One can claim to have 'semi-balance', where the sides of the scale are juuust about on the same level. However, what you've done is add a feather to one side of the scale, and a brick to the other.

Secondly, there is no such thing as 'unique' balance. As I said, balance is a state, with no denotation of specifics; in other words, 'balance' can refer to a feather on both sides of the scale, or a brick on both sides. Yes, you can make unique classes, but making unique classes doesn't make things balanced.

Now, previously, when others had brought up these issues, you have done a number of things. You have disregarded them as trolls, pointing to past actions of theirs which you define as trolling. Secondly, you have pointed to their own past mistakes, telling them they are in now position to make the above analyses. These counterarguments of yours are folly. When something is observable, as the above is, the person making the observation does not matter. For example, I have no past of project mismanagement or trolling on you and your co-developers. I have made the above observations just as those you have disregarded have.

Additionally, one of your most common counterpoints is that those judging your mod have not played it enough. You back this up by saying that either you or one of your co-developers are always or virtually always observing your server, therefore knowing who is on and who isn't. This is also a rather faulty claim. Firstly, it doesn't take 6 hours of gameplay to see the differences between NS and GvH; namely the changed attacks and new classes. If it is well known that GvH relied on the range vs. melee dynamic for balance, and it's obvious within 15 minutes of gameplay that the Ghouls have received powerful new ranged attacks, it isn't hard to make the step that this will hinder balance. If you want to require more information, damage outputs and speeds can be identified offline, over which you have no knowledge. Speaking of which, it's easy to garner empirical data without joining the server as well; for instance, your claim that you almost always end up with 4-5 score is hardly believable.

You make these claims, yet you won't back them up. You insist you cannot get the logs; if that is false, shame on you, and if it's true, stop making these claims, and stop threatening to search logs for users. You can't be believed.

You want to move the discussion to a 'neutral' IRC chat? That makes no sense at all, friend. Everyone who would want to participate in this discussion has access this forum (unless they've been banned, in which case we don't want them anyway). You feel like you're in 'enemy territory', that you're being assaulted by too many users, and that you haven't enough 'back up'? Nonsense, everyone on 'our' side has the same opinion. No other explanations other than self-interest exist for moving to your IRC.

I know many have talked about how downgrading to a Skype beta has fixed their problems with the program. Exactly which version is suggested when doing this?

In other news, anyone know remedies for a failing Skype?

Symptoms include random crash, and inability to start up.

The Skype window doesn't come up automatically like it usually does when I start up my computer. When I manually start it up, it freezes within about 6 seconds.

I haven't updated to the most recent version; I have the version before the most recent version.

I've made no updates to my computer nor internet since I last used it (which was earlier today). Originally, I had thought the freezing (which began while I was logged on) was simply due to the influx of new messages (and new chats and new calls), but now I can't even log in.

Anything Goes / Re: Where did you get your name?
« on: December 06, 2011, 03:02:34 AM »
I was really into Kingdom Hearts at the time (not that I'm not now), and I found I liked all the connotations of the word 'Kingdom.' I split it into 'King Dumb' for multiple reasons. It made the name an actual person, and the 'Dumb' made it funny and induced periodic loling when people would say the name aloud and understand it. The colors also have reason; 'King' is purple, as this is the traditional color of royalty, and 'Dumb' is blue because blue is my favorite color.

'Aurora' is the name of a character I created. In the books which I am in the gradual process of writing, Aurora is one of two characters who is alive throughout the entire plot  (which lasts a duration of about 2000 years in its current form), and the only one who remains alive for this time in the 'material' world (the world as we know it). He has an affinity for the natural entropy and energy of life, which inspired the name's colors which I deem 'vibrant.'

The other two names I use often are General Zelgius and The Black Knight, which, as many probably know, refer to the same character, who appeared in both Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. The character's motives aren't revealed until his death in the endgame of the latter of the aforementioned title, and it suited his purposes to lead two lives: one as a renowned militaryman, earl, and, later, General of the powerful Begnion Central Empire of the Holy Begnion Empire, and the other as The Black Knight, the strongest of the Four Riders of Begnion's 'rival' nation Daein and 'loyal' servant to Mad King Ashnard of Daein in Path of Radiance. Ultimately, the reason behind Zelgius' double life was twofold: his loyalty to his secret master (and overall mastermind of the conflicts of both games) Sephiran, and his desire to become the most powerful swordsman in the world (specifically to better his master, whose skills were passed down to son and main protagonist Ike).
