That's okay, dude, it's great that's you're trying. Heck, even I have been trying to make 8-bit sprites by hand until I eventually got it down.
When it comes to sprite-making, just be a bit more serious in your work like how sebamkfan and Mistergambit64 are. Don't just make recolors and say like "Oh, this is (insert fanmade Robot Master name here)". I would continuously do that kind of stuff in the past until I eventually learned that doing that kind of stuff was becoming uncreative of me. Now I make custom-made 8-bit sprites by hand in MSPaint (yes, folks, that's what I use to do 8-bit work).
Also, if you're going to make 8-bit work, be sure to save it in .png format to give it that crispy-clear look. .jpeg/.jpg format is normally reserved for photos and stuff and will make your 8-bit sprites fuzzy and hard to work with, so you don't want to save it in that kind of format. I'm just saying, dude.
