Almost three years later...

Wow, I can't believe it's actually been that long.
I also can't believe I thought that Swordman I helped with was good...

Well regardless, I've come to redeem myself. Finally, an update on this whole debacle. After countless hours and countless concoctions of questionable legality, I present to you...



THIS is the new Swordman we've come up with.
Since most people seemed to agree that Molly's take was the most accurate, the logical course of action seemed to be to use that one. HOWEVER, that sprite does not alleviate a key point from the original post- the size.

So, I was able to downsize Molly's sprite to be comparable to the one presented in the original post, without compromising too much detail. I think, personally, it's the best possible outcome for the sprite. You get all the cool detail and accuracy for the sake of visuals, and the smaller size for the sake of gameplay.

I figured I'd share it with everyone to gain external feedback, since for the better part of 2 years, it had only been seen by those within the internal devteam.


So, with that said, I'd like to invite anyone to provide critique and feedback on this "New-er New" Swordman.

I'd like to note that I have not taken a "break" from game development, I just wanted to get away from all the silly community drama. Development is going fine.

But, uh...
What was that map where the item was screenshoted in? I don't recognize it...And there seems to be some kind of blue spot in the far distance...it kind of looks like Petrol Man from DOSReborn...?

Anyway, good continuation, I hope you don't forget to take breaks  ;)

Both the gif and screenshot take place in Blade Man's map. The blue figure you're seeing in the distance is just Ring Man.

There's an MM8BDM Discord server that exists. It's a great place to be if you wanna be social with other people who also like Mega Mans and 8-Bits and Deathmatches.

Rule 4: Avoid bringing other servers' drama in here, and avoid bringing this servers' drama elsewhere.

Rule 5: If you're gonna complain about a @here / @everyone ping, just turn them off if they bother you. The only way you're getting pinged is if a trusted member with a role has used it. If you wish to receive this role, you can DM/ping a moderator about it. Failure to comply may result in a mute.

Rule 6: If you have echo/loud background noise in VC you may be muted, let a staff member know once you've got it worked out and you'll be unmuted quickly.

Rule 7: Obviously, don’t post NSFW content here.

If you feel any of these rules have been broken or a situation is getting out of hand, DM/ping a moderator.

Just to keep organized, we've also got a large set of channels, each with varied purposes.

- Most discussions can go in #general.
- #intros_and_q-a Is for introducing yourself to the community! It can also be used to ask questions that relate to this discord server.
- #matchmaking is for organizing games and hosting servers for MM8BDM.
- #games_room is for organization and discussion of other games than MM8BDM.
- #creative is for art/music productions.
- #modtalk is for MM8BDM modifications.
- #mm8bdm_discussion is for discussing the core MM8BDM game.
- #anything_goes is for miscellaneous nonsense (rules above still apply!)

This is probably one of the most technically impressive things I've seen in 8BDM in a while, so really good job to those who contributed to it. I feel there's still some room for improvement, but it's pretty solid overall for a rather experimental project.

As per usual, the covers here are really good, with my favourites probably being Saturn, Venus, Mars, and the Ballade fight.

Unless there exists an external program to do it for you, no. Usually renaming is the most tedious part of the process.

What if I want to have two differents back/side and side frames?
I should have explained this better in the main post, but here's how this works:

A frame called PLY1A8A2 is the A frame of the sprite "family" PLY1, but the numbers make it interesting. The numbers signify which angle it should be displayed at. The reason most skins have frames with two numbers in them is that putting an additional one tells the engine to render that frame for (in this case) angle 2, and mirror it for angle 8. This is true for other rotations as well, such as 6/4 and 7/3. If you want a full 8-way rotation, you'd need frames A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, and A8 all defined. If you wanted different side frames and back/side frames, you'd need A3, A4, A6, and A7.

I've been meaning to update the main post for a while with this corrected information, but I haven't gotten the time to do that yet. Maybe I should do that soon, haha

Those Duo sprites are pretty cool, but those pain frames are pretty mediocre (I think those are the ones used in core??)

Well regardless, here's a 'better' one I made. Didn't rotate it because I got lazy, but if you wanna do that go right ahead.

EDIT: rotated it myself, don't worry about it
