Ivory, you're completely correct in the aspect that in one end, the MM series has really nothing big to continue on. But to that extent, I think it would be hoped that for the few titles Capcom makes for the franchise, they'd want to pursue it to completion. It's a rather odd balance; we want familiar, but we want new. We want new experiences, but it derives from something that is age-old.
I personally don't think the business practice of cancelling MML3 to be the wrong doing. It's the fan treatment of one of gaming history's most beloved characters which is really the issue. As I stated, MM doesn't get much things new anymore, since you're right, there's not alot of ground to work with. But the fans' cherished realms, such as Legends, is sought to be completed for us to have closure. The community got offered that, but due to what Capcom saw, they pulled the plug. It's been discussed here, but it was how it was axed which was the fuel to fire; if things like the Prototype actually got released, I'm sure the reactions would be far less extreme.
