Tutorial Collection / [INSTALL] Installing MM8BDM on Mac OSX
« on: October 27, 2010, 10:21:41 PM »
Hello! As I don't actually own a Mac I still have no idea how to do this. Sorry! I did ask for Mac users to step forth and help me out with this but no one really sat down and gave it a proper go, except for Hawkman who managed to get it running using WINE.

Anyway, I'll try my best to point you in the right direction. If you have any better luck, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD POST HOW YOU GOT IT RUNNING, IT WILL HELP YOUR FELLOW MAC BRETHREN!

First, go download MM8BDM.

You can grab the correct version of Skulltag for Mac OSX here.

That's all I got. Sorry! You might want to try your luck with the OLD tutorial for installing the SGC demo.

Here's Hawkman's comments using WINE and the windows version (included in the MM8BDM zip file):

Quote
Currently I'm just running the PC version of MM8BDM on my Mac using a program called Darwine http://darwine.sourceforge.net/

I keep getting crashes if I play single player too long but Multiplayer runs like a dream. Great for anyone looking for a temporary solution. I did have to fiddle with display options a bit. You need to tell Darwine to emulate a desktop of your chosen resolution (1024x768 for me) and when the game is up change its native resolution to be the same (thus taking up the entire darwine window). For some reason it doesn't like to run full screen.

Tutorial Collection / [INSTALL] Installing MM8BDM on Linux
« on: October 26, 2010, 03:37:27 PM »
Please note this is a fan made tutorial as I have no knowledge of Linux or how it works. It looks all very complicated, but most likely if you're on Linux you LOVE this kind of stuff!

Special thanks to fadein and MechaS3K for help with these.

Installing for Linux

There are two ways to install Skulltag(and therefore MM8BDM); the Easy way(which resolves dependencies and other nastiness for you), and the Hard way(which is messier but gives you more control over where everything goes). If you have Ubuntu or another distro that accepts Ubuntu repositories, you can use the Easy way. Otherwise, sorry - you'll need to use the Hard way.

Installing MM8BDM

Download the latest version of MM8BDM. Extract "megagame.wad" and "MM8BDM-(MM8BDM version number).pk3" from the zip to /usr/games/skulltag.

The "Easy" way

Now download the LINUX version of Skulltag for required MM8BDM: 32-bit / 64-bit. Extract the files somewhere you'll be able to find later, preferably in a new folder.

Now you will need to open your file manager in root mode. If you're using a bog standard copy of Ubuntu, that means opening a terminal and typing in "sudo nautilus". Enter your password. We're entering dangerous territory here, so don't do anything than what you are directed to!

Find the files you extracted earlier. Select all of them and copy them. Navigate to /usr/games/skulltag and overwrite all of the files when requested. Now close the file manager.

Install Skulltag according to the directions on the official wiki. Then run Doomseeker. Find a server with megagame.wad and join it. If you can connect, congratulations, you're done! If you get an error about outdated network code, make sure you're using the right version of skulltag.

The "Hard" way

Here you can find the method fadein used to install MM8BDM. Be sure to download the versions of Skulltag specified in the "Easy" way, and the latest version of MM8BDM. Good luck!

MM8BDM Discussion / WANTED - Mac and Linux users
« on: October 25, 2010, 09:41:38 AM »
So at long last there's been a Skulltag update, which means I can release a new version of MM8BDM! This also means Mac and Linux users can get in on the action.

BUT I don't have Linux or Mac OSX, so I'll need a test subject to try out the latest Skulltag on their OS. If they can get it working, I will need them to write a step by step of what they did to get it running.

If you want to be a test subject, please do the following:

1) Download v1a of MM8BDM and extract it's contents into a directory.
2) Download the Mac or Linux versions of Skulltag
3) Install Skulltag into the same directory as the MM8BDM contents (Not sure how it works with Mac)
4) Download and install DoomSeeker.

Now you need to set up DoomSeeker to point to megagame.wad as the IWAD. I have no idea what DoomSeeker looks like on these systems so some guess work is involved. Then try to join a Mega Man Deathmatch server. This OLD guide for the Mac may help.

If you have any other methods of running Skulltag with MM8BDM, please explain in full detail how to get it running. I'm assuming there's a way to do it without DoomSeeker.

NOTE: If you do manage to connect to a server, you will be prompted with an error saying you have an invalid Skulltag version. This is expected, please report back if you make it this far!

MM8BDM Discussion / Next release - Opinions wanted!
« on: October 22, 2010, 05:44:30 PM »
As you may or may not know, the next version is pretty much ready for release. I am holding it back because I'm waiting on the next version of skulltag to fix some annoying bugs (like the quickman major lag bug).

However, it's also come to my attention that FINALLY there's Mac OSX and Linux versions of the latest Skulltag beta. HOWEVER, this version DOES NOT fix the bugs that I need fixing. I have reported these issues and they are now officially fixed ready for whenever the next Skulltag comes out (it's been like this for a while now).

So I have two options. Post your thoughts on which one I should go with.

Option 1 - Wait

I wait for the next version of Skulltag (which could take I'm guessing a week or so, but who knows) that fixes the annoying issues and THEN make a release with it bundled in. This will also give me some chance to do some research and figure out how to get the Mac and Linux versions working without the launcher (probably via doomseeker or something). This would also mean we're fully up to date with the latest Skulltag fixes and features, so all is happy.

Option 2 - Use the latest Skulltag we have

I do a release now that uses the latest Skulltag we currently have. This would satisfy Mac and Linux users (if they can figure out how to get it to run, as I have no idea) BUT the projectile bugs and such would still exist and would require ANOTHER release after to fix them. I can probably do a temporary workaround for the quickman stage bug mind you, but you'd still see projectiles randomly getting stuck and potentially causing FPS drops.

Before you choose, think about the convenience side of this. Would you want to download 55mb and then follow along with another 55mb update in a few days or weeks?

Not sure if this was automatically generated or what, but wow.

http://mm8bdm.wikia.com/wiki/

Not sure it was worthy of one! Anyway, feel free to update it... I guess. I don't have time to update it myself but it could be a handy resource for editing and strategies.

If someone wants to add all the weapons, I guess that could be a good start. I've been wanting to do up the weapons part of my site anyway.

Help & Editing / Do not edit the MM8BDM pk3 file
« on: October 09, 2010, 12:45:14 AM »
People started making maps in the SGC demo, which is awesome. However, they were simply adding the maps to the main mm8bdm pk3 file which is wrong.

If you wish to make your own maps, do not edit the main PK3 file of MM8BDM. Why? Because if you do, it will cause conflicts between you and whoever does not have the exact same pk3 file as you, causing you or the other player to disconnect. I'm sure you're aware of this.

In the next few days I'll explain how to correcty make patches, maps etc for MM8BDM and all other doom mods for that matter. You never edit the source material, which makes distribution much easier  ;)

Stay tuned for tutorials explaining how to do this soon.

Introduction

Port Forwarding can be a huge issue when trying to host servers for your favourite PC games. MM8BDM is no exception. It can be a huge issue or a minor inconvenience depending on your router model, your technical know how and how well you can follow this guide!

Most likely you're here because you're behind a router, or have tried to host a MM8BDM server and failed. This tutorial will help you get started on your short/long journey to getting your router to understand that you want people to be able to connect to you!

Understanding you router

It took me a while to figure it all out because there were hardly any guides out there at the time. Today you can usually find helpful guides or forum posts that explain how it all works, but back when I started this it was all guess work.

First of all, you may or may not know that your router actually houses multiple IP addresses. The two you're going to be interested in are you external and internal IP addresses. Your internal IP address is your computer's IP address. It's usually something like 192.168.0.*. If you have more computers that use the router, you'll have the same IP but usually with a different last number. So for example you could have 192.138.0.1 for your computer and 192.138.0.2 for another computer. These are NOT the IP address that other players will connect to. Your external IP address, can be found at http://www.whatismyip.com and is the IP for the router. This is the IP address that people to connect to (and the one you give out, if you want friends to connect to directly).

Now the great thing about routers is that they're very secure. Unless you specify, certain connections will not be made and it will be impossible for you to host servers for games like Skulltag. What you need to tell your router is which ports are open for each individual computer. This usually involves going on to your router's admin page and simply adding your computer's internal IP address to a list of open ports. How complicated and how much effort is required to do this, is totally up to the manufacturer of your router. Some can be rather simple, while others can be so locked down you have to phone them up to give you access.

Opening the port(s)

IMPORTANT: ALWAYS BE PREPARED TO BACKTRACK THROUGH YOUR STEPS

The first thing you need to do is find out what your computer's INTERNAL IP address is. The easiest way to find this out (for windows users), is to hit the start button and click run (OR windows key + R). Then type cmd and hit enter. You'll get a lovely dos box pop up. In here type ipconfig.

You should see something like this. IP Address is your EXTERNAL. Default gateway is your INTERNAL IP address, which is the one we're after.

Now that we have our internal IP address, type it into the address bar of Internet Explorer. Yup that's right. You should get a login prompt pop up. If you don't know what the login and password is, it's most likely still the default one. Do a google search for your router model and "default password", usually you'll find one fairly easily. If it doesn't work, ask the one who pays the bills (your parents prehaps). If that one happens to be you, and you don't know your own password, you'll probably have to phone your internet provider up and they'll tell you what it is.

Your next step is to open the port for your INTERNAL IP. This is where things can get a bit grey. As most routers differ I can only give you hints to find what you need. Some routers just flat out say "Port Forwarding", while others label them as "Services" or some other weird name. When you've found it, it will usually ask you for your IP address and the port you want to open. The default port for Skulltag servers is 10666 but it can be anything (as long as that anything is the same port you host your sever with). Some routers will have multiple places to put this.

For some help, try searching on google for your router name and "port forward". Usually you'll find either an official guide from the manufacturer or a question and answer on a forum. Google is your best friend here, unless you happen to know someone with the same or similar router. If you give up, your last option is to phone customer support and get them to walk you through it. Sorry!

When you've opened the port (or you think you have) test it out by trying to host a server and see if it shows up on the server list.

Good luck! Post here if you need help and we'll try our best to get you hosting!

Tutorial Collection / [TUTORIAL] Hosting a server in the MM8BDM Launcher
« on: September 29, 2010, 09:32:02 PM »
Introduction

Included in the Mega Man Deathmatch zip is a launcher which allows you to run the game locally or host servers. The idea is to have a fast way to host games without going through most of the complications and additional options most launcher have. Since a lot of options for Skulltag do not apply to MM8BDM, this launcher simplifies the process by allowing you to configure the basics.

If you would like more options (such as running your own expansions/mods), you should probably get DoomSeeker

Setting up a server

Run MM8BDM.exe and click the host tab. You'll be presented with quite a few options. Here I will explain what they all do.

Server Name
This is what players will see while looking through their server browser. Call it whatever you like!

Game mode
The game mode to be played in the server. There's quite a few!

Deathmatch - Standard deathmatch, first to hit the frag limit wins.
Team Deathmatch - Standard deathmatch in teams. First team to reach the frag limit wins.
Last Man Standing - Players get a random set of weapons and spectate when they die. The last man standing wins the round. First to reach the win limit wins.
Team Last Man Standing - Players get a random set of weapons and spectate when they die. The last team standing wins the round. First team to reach the win limit wins.
Terminator - A powerup is randomly placed in the map. This powerup permanently gives you a damage and health boost, making you much more difficult to take down. If the terminator is killed, the powerup is dropped and the killer gains 10 frags! First to hit the fraglimit wins.
Possession - Players must find a circuit board randomly set in a map and hold onto it for a minute. Once the minute is up they win the round. If they die, the board is dropped. First player to hit the win limit wins.
Team Possession - Players must find a circuit board randomly set in a map and hold onto it for a minute. Once the minute is up they win the round. If they die, the board is dropped. First team to hit the win limit wins.
Capture the Flag - Players start at their own team bases and much capture the opposing team's flag and bring it back to their own. Players must also defend their own flag from the opposing team. First team to hit the capture limit wins.
One flag CTF - Much like CTF, but instead a white flag is placed in the center of the arena. Players must take this flag to the OPPOSING team's flag to score a point. First team to hit the capture limit wins.
Duel - Players fight 1 on 1 for a few rounds. After each round, the winner fights a new player. After so many wins, the next map is chosen. Other players must spectate and wait in line until their turn.
Instagib - Deathmatch, but everyone uses powered up metal blades that kill everything in one hit.

Note: CTF and One Flag CTF can only be played on CTF maps (MMCTF01-MMCTF03). You should also be careful what maps you choose for possession, as the circuit board can be dropped into pits and never be retrieved on certain levels.

Broadcast to server list
If this is ticked, it will appear in the list of servers. If it is unticked, it will not be displayed. Players can still connect if they know your IP address however.

Max players
The maximum amount of players that can play in this server. 32 is the maximum.

Max spectators
The maximum amount of spectators in this server. These players cannot join if the maximum amount of players is reached. 32 is the maximum.

Port
This is VERY important. If you aren't behind a router, you should be good to go. If you ARE behind a router, you need to specify an open port here. For more info on port forwarding, go here (later).

Frag/win limit
The game is over when this limit is hit. This can be frags, points or wins depending on the game mode.

Time Limit
The game ends when the time limit is hit. Whoever has the most frags, points or wins at this point, wins the game.

Password
If not blank, players will need to enter this password to enter your server. Perfect for private games.

Extra Command Line Parameters
This area is if you wish to pass any extra parameters to Skulltag that the launcher doesn't offer. For a good list of these, see here.

Game options
These are specific options for the game. While there's a HELL of a lot more, these are the most important for MM8BDM.

Weapons Stay - Weapons don't disappear when picked up. Highly recommended.
Spawn Farthest - Skulltag will attempt to respawn you as far away from other players as possible, resulting in less spawn killing.
Drop Weapons - When a player dies, he will drop his current weapon (does not apply to mega buster variants).
Randomize Maps - Randomizes the map rotation rather than playing them in order.
Force Respawn - Forces players to respawn when killed.

Map Rotation
This is the list of maps that will be played in this server. You can change the order around or remove maps from this list freely. Hit the defaults button to restore the map rotation back to normal. Note that CTF has it's own map rotation, and those maps will be selected automatically when you choose CTF or One Flag CTF in the drop down.

Launch
Launches the server and brings up the server window. You do not automatically connect to your game. Instead you have to launch the game and connect to it yourself, or use a server browser like DoomSeeker (see below).

Save Settings
Save your server settings to a file.

Load Settings
Restore your server settings from a file.

Connecting to your server

Now that you have the server window open, you may want to join your server to check the settings out or actually play with other folks. You can do this two ways.

1. Open up the launcher again and run singleplayer. When the game is loaded drop the console (press the ` key). Type in the console "connect localhost". You should connect straight to your server. If localhost doesn't work, try your IP address.

2. You can use DoomSeeker and join it from there. This is the recommended way as this confirms that your server is running and other players are able to find it. If it's not showing up in DoomSeeker, most likely you need to do some port forwarding.

Managing your server

While the server window is open, you have a bunch of options you can access. I won't list them all, as most are self explanatory or are irrelevant to MM8BDM. You can kick/ban players from here, add bots, talk to your players etc etc. Don't forget when you close this window, your server shuts down and your players will be disconnected, so it's advisable to let them know first!

Tutorial Collection / [TUTORIAL] DoomSeeker for Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch
« on: September 24, 2010, 12:27:43 AM »
DOOMSEEKER

Ready to play Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch online with others? Then it's time to connect using Doomseeker!

Doomseeker is a third party server browser used for finding and connecting to MM8BDM servers, and is now bundled with all installations of MM8BDM. Doomseeker can be launched by using MM8BDM's launcher, under the Multiplayer tab. Don't see the Launch Doomseeker button? Try redownloading MM8BDM from our Download page.

Doomseeker will then open with a list of active servers. Double clicking on a server will attempt to connect you to the game.

If any additional files or mods are required in order to join the server, you will be given a prompt to try to find and install these files. Once downloaded, you should then be able to join the game.

Have fun playing MM8BDM online!

Banned from Master Server

If you can't see any servers or you receive an error about being banned by the Zandronum master server, your IP address may be caught in a range ban by mistake. Sometimes, the Zandronum Staff needs to ban a range of IPs to keep a known cheater or troll out of the servers. Sometimes, players get caught up in these ranges and are banned before they can even play. If that happens to you, follow these instructions and you'll be unbanned.

Manual Installation

If you prefer, you can use your own installation of Doomseeker by manually downloading it from their website.

MM8BDM Discussion / Wanted: Mega Man quit quotes!
« on: September 19, 2010, 07:59:24 PM »
As you may or may not know, when you quit skulltag you get a funny message basically saying "Don't quit!". You can customize these.

There's a total of 14 quotes, but I can't think of some good ones. So far I have the following:

"stay tuned for more megaman after the break!"
"sizzlin' circuits, you're leaving?"
"with you out of the way i'll finally be able to take over ze vorld!"
"fight, megaman! for everlasting peace!"

If you've got any ideas for others, post em!

The Ghoul's Forest / Ghouls vs Humans - Capture The Fallen RELEASED
« on: September 16, 2010, 09:20:29 AM »
While I impatiently wait for Skulltag to get the fix for the morphing issues, I've created a new expansion which is much smaller and literally took about 30 minutes to make. This time, we're going in a completely different direction though:

This title should be a little more explanatory than GVH:RE though:

Yes, this is essentially CTF but with a twist to make things a little more fair. Basically the flags are replaced with orbs containing souls of your fallen comrades. The idea of the game is to steal the opposite team's soul with a little help from your friends, exactly like in CTF. However once you take the opposing team's soul, you become a ghost. The ghost plays physically just like a regular doom marine, but with no attacks. This means that if you want to have a shot at capturing the soul, you'll most likely need help from your team mates to get back to your soul safe. When you capture the soul, you die and respawn like normal.

The idea came from a while back when some goof balls tried GVH CTF out, and obviously it was unbalanced as heck. Sjas could simply fly over the whole map, grab the flag and fly back over with ease. In this mode, you can't do that because you become a ghost. I believe that this change alone could make GVH CTF playable, and enjoyable. Not to mention, because the ghost can't attack it involves a lot more teamwork!
