A group of friends and I wish to start making our own Doom mod from the ground up-- that is to say, a total overhaul like MM8BDM. Where would we start? Should we just use MM8BDM as a base? What programs should we use?

Ive been facinated to doom mods like 8bdm,and the sonic mod.
never was into the doom game,let alone fps in general,but the game is ok sometimmes when i play...megaman 8bit dathmatch i play now an then...its enjoyable..i just dont enjoy most fps and their astetics.....I got visual ideas...but atm...i suck/am new to modding,i manage to add a weapon i made a edit over from cutmanmikes weapon template for v3,but thats about it.
id like to make swords with slash waves
stages with various sectors to progress,with a mixed way similar to the mission mode Wad i saw and tried months back....want to have my sprites in specific sizes,detail...and pallete of their own ....
wish i knew more on it...been tinkering basics with
.Doom builder 2 and misc..
thinkign about using slade3...anyone on those?
