Dust stood by the door leading out of the meeting room, waving the Masters over with one arm. "Come on, then. I'll show you around."

The group followed behind Sheila, moving down various hallways and corridors. Periodically, they would stop next to a door, looking into the room through a window while Sheila described each one's intended purpose.

"This is the training room. Every now and then, we get some guys all rounded up, and they square off inside o' here. Keeps 'em fresh during downtime. It's kinda like Arena Masters... with less trash talk, backstabbing, or stains from vital fluids. Right now we're all busy with this Steiner business, but I'm sure you can make room for a practice match later on... if ya really feel like it."

"Over here's grid synthesis. Ya know those smaller Force Frags that pop outta drones sometimes? Turns out, you can make good stuff outta 'em. New weapons, stronger gear... plug-ins for special moves... all good stuff. I'd say it's worth checkin' out, after you get... mmm, about 6 Force Frags or so. The type of Frags ya put in'll influence the type of equipment you get back out, so don't just throw any old trash together and expect you'll love it."
(click to show/hide)
"And right next door, there's grid enhancement. Let's say ya don't want anything new. You're comfortable with your weapons. You like the style o' gear ya got. Wouldn't you wanna make it better? The labcoats in there'll do the job, if you got 3 Force Frags to spare... and at least two of the same type of Frag. ... ... Oh, I almost forgot to mention. Both synthesis and enhancement use mainly the Fragments for energy, but they need somethin' to hold everything together, anchor the whole process. So you'll need some Force Crystals, too."

"This door leads to the armory. Sometimes we got spare stuff lyin' around that you can just sorta take with you... but there's also a shop in here so you can buy stuff you might not be able to craft or find. I don't think they'll trust ya with any of the big guns quite yet, so the selection's... a little basic at the moment. I'm sure it'll get better after you get missions under your belt."
(click to show/hide)
As Sheila led the Masters back out to the lobby, where the blonde woman from earlier waved at the group. "Hey! Where'd you disappear to?"

"Oh, I was just..." Sheila trailed off mid-sentence. "Leading them around... the facilities..." She smacked her forehead with her gloved palm.

The woman smiled. "It's alright, you saved me the trouble... though I wish you would've said something first. I've been waiting for everything to get done for a little while now." She turned to a small terminal, typing behind the counter. "Anyway, my name's Talys Speere. I'm one of two attendants responsible for unit deployment. ... That means putting you all to work." Talys looked over at the Masters. "I'm sure you're all ready for a mission now, hm?"

Sheila looked at the Admiral as he took a puff of his pipe. "I'm not so sure about you, Admiral... but the rest of the group here's just a bunch of pit fighters. Veterans, first-timers, doesn't matter. And as pathetic as it sounds, you've got the best lead on Steiner right now." She leaned forward, punching one of her palms with her other hand. "We're confident this wasn't an isolated incident, and when he strikes again, we wanna flush 'im out. He might have more... incentive to try and tackle you guys, seeing as how ya got in the way before..."

Sheila leaned back and sighed. "It's a weak argument, but it's the best plan we got. I'll understand if any of you aren't feeling up to it, and we're not gonna force ya into being Protectors or anything. ... But hey, what else are ya gonna do? Go back to scrappin' each another for lunch money?"

"And while we're on the subject..." Propping an elbow on the table, Sheila turned to face Ace. "Usually, only the best of the best even catch a glimpse o' the Castle. It's not exactly a secret organization, at least not on a surface level... but it takes some real skill to make it down here. That's why we help run stuff like Arena Masters. For one, it keeps a lotta the riff-raff off the streets. Ya wanna fight, then fine. Just keep it in the ring. And second of all... we keep an eye on the strong ones. See where they're tryin' to go. If they're in it for the money, for the fame... or if they're just depraved, power-hungry animals." She shot a glare at Crazy Gunstar. "Or if they're cocky assholes blowin' their winnings on junk."

Gunstar shot up from his seat. "What? You wanna go, son?"

Sheila crossed her arms. "I've got nothin' to prove. ... You just did."

Gunstar tilted his hat with one finger, sliding back into his chair. "That's what I thought. Sit down, son."

Dust merely huffed in response, as the door slid open again. A small boy with two curled horns shuffled into the room. His eyes darted from Master to Master, while his hands tightly gripped a small folder, papers peering out from its sides. A rather large ball of fluff hung at the right hip of his thick white sweater.

Sheila looked up and smiled. "Oh, you made it. You sure took a while to show up... get lost or something?" She stood up, walking over to the boy. "Well, it doesn't matter. Everyone, this is Cotton. He's been working here as an intern for a couple of weeks, and he'll be joining those of you wishing to stay."

Cotton nervously looked at the group. "... Whatever."

"You'll, uh... you'll get used to him." She stepped over to the door, ready to leave. "Well, then. Unless anyone has further questions, I'll be directing you over to Talys for a tour of the facilities. Get you all started on a real mission."

the beef with customs is mainly that some are just straight upgrades with little to no drawbacks

that, and Custom Kong is 80% unpunishable windboxes
ESPECIALLY the Spinning Kong custom

if it weren't for stuff like DK, customs would be pretty darn rad
Customdorf in particular functions almost like a new character

"... No one explained anything to you?" Dust sighed, shaking her head. "That good-for-nothin'... Alright, I'll just start from the beginning."

"Most of you seated here had been taking part in this week's Arena Masters competition. It's basically a new-age coliseum of sorts. Be the toughest, be the smartest, but just be the last Master standing. Said competition was interrupted by Lucian Steiner deBasse, the uh... dickbag. So far his motives are unclear, as is his goal... but at the moment, we're treating him as a definite threat."

Sheila pulled a tiny plastic bag out of her pockets, placing it on the table. Inside the bag were several dull purple shards. "This was found at the scene. Highly concentrated Omega Force. Usually this stuff's blended in pretty densely with other Force types, dulling their energy. But when it's isolated like this... it can be pretty nasty stuff."

"Force, to put it simply, is a crystalline energy source used in most modern robotics... and a few other things. It was created roughly fifteen years ago, leading to large infighting that eventually culminated as war. That kid who dragged you down here? That's Rock Strider. He's the son of Albert Strider, one of the men responsible for ending the war. He refined and perfected Force as a resource, to the point where it could be synthesized. A potent, renewable energy."

"... He worked with an Alexander Wily, the other head of the Force project. Wily saw things more... black and white. He was the brain behind the Variable Command Grid, the very same used in Arena Masters. He saw Force as... more of a power than an energy. One that could be tapped, unlocked. One that had limitless potential..."

Sheila sighed. "From what I've heard, Wily's achievements were what decisively ended the war... and what made it so hard to forget. After but a single display, all sides quickly folded under the pressure. Branded as heartless, insane, Wily ended up vanishing after the war. We're still not sure where he ended up, or if he's even still alive, but..."

"Well, that's why we're down here. We work behind the scenes, keeping tabs on everything that comes across the Grid. See, every personal Grid sort of communicates with a much larger, central server. Kinda like bees in a hive. Whenever there's a disturbance, we can isolate the incident and intercept. We don't need tech like Wily's ever building up again... so we help to keep the balance. ... Of course, we do more traditional stuff too. Stop criminals, bust illegal activity... y'know, cop stuff. In a way we're all like knights, helping to keep the Castle running."

Sheila pulled her legs off of the table. She looked across to the party. "We're protectors. The Protectors of Robot Kingdom."

The group slowly wandered inside the complex, casually dispersing to check out different areas. Ace had decided to hang back, however, turning around to face Rock and his blonde friend.

"This place is impressive, and I'm sure somebody will give us the grand tour in time..." He paused. "... But if I heard correctly after the explosion back there, you and the joker with the assault rifle know each other, and it seems you might have an idea of what the hell he's doing. Do you mind filling us in, or is it something you can't talk about?"

"No, I don't mind..." Rock sighed, clenching his right hand into a fist. "Steiner's a big bully, plain and simple. He's always trying to start up trouble in different towns... and he gets in the way when I'm fighting crime. Usually he's not even that dangerous, he's just annoying. Him and his stupid dog, too..."

The blonde girl shook her head. "I want to say you shouldn't have to worry about him, but after what just happened... I'm not sure." She nervously swept one foot across the floor. "Lucian's not a bad kid, he's just a bit... misled."

"He's a douche!" Rock threw his arms up into the air. "And he blew up half the coliseum for Arena Masters! Don't defend the guy!"

The girl laughed. "Yeah, maybe you're right... Still, there's something strange about all of this..."

"I'm sorry," Ace spoke up. "I don't believe we've met."

"Oh!" The girl held out one arm towards Ace. "I'm sorry. My name's Carollyn Light. I'm sure you've heard of my father somewhere?" She reached out to grab Ace's half-extended hand, completing the handshake. "You're Card Shark, I already know that. I helped run things at Arena Masters this week. Usually Kalinka handles it all, but..."

Ace raised a brow. "But... ?"

Carollyn withdrew her arm, moving both hands behind her back. "... I'm sorry, I'm not particularly fond of the program. It's nothing you or your friends did, it's just..."

"Friends... ?" Ace paused for a moment before turning around, looking at the other Masters who had fought in the arena and who were getting acclimated to their new surroundings. He watched as Wood Bowflex approached a large couch in a corner, next to a table and a few vending machines. He leaped up with a hearty laugh, slamming down onto the couch and catapulting the soldier (who had previously been resting there) into a nearby wall.

... He's wearing pants.

Ace winced, turning back to Carollyn. "I've never met these people before in my life."

Carollyn laughed so hard she snorted. "Ahhhh ha ha ha haaaa... I'm sorry, I just assumed... well, never mind. You all seemed to work together fairly well, but if there's a problem, I'm sure Talys can find you other partners." Catching her breath, she pointed to the service counters. Behind one of them was a tall blonde woman with steel shoulder plates above her pressed green uniform. "She's in charge of team registration... but I'm sure someone'll explain all of this better than I can."

The rear doors opened behind Ace, Rock, and Carollyn. Friggs slumped in, battered and bruised, assisted by the old man from the coliseum. Several others ran over to the rear entrance, eager for an explanation or to offer their assistance.

"Alright, move it! Nothin' to see here," the old man growled. "Just get 'im to the recovery dock." He turned, glaring at Ace. "You. Get the other Masters who followed you here, and scoot your rumps down to Sarge's office in five. Minutes." The old man trudged through the room with Friggs in tow, disappearing down a hallway somewhere.

Rock groaned. "Oh, now we're gonna get it."

"I don't get it." Ace frowned. "Who's Sarge?"

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Crazy Gunstar, Admiral Anchor, Wood Bowflex, Needle Asylum, Gravot Sturaika, Card Shark, and Black Death were seated around a large oval table. Near the head of the table stood an absolute titan, over nine feet tall and covered in metal. Or maybe he was entirely metal? He firmly held a fat, unlit cigar with his thick square jaw, slowly chewing on its end while glaring over the party.

"Listen up, maggots!" Sarge suddenly slammed the table with one palm. "I've received word from on high that you all are to be sworn in and deputized! Well, aren't we special." He glared at Gunstar in particular. "Personally, I think you all look like a bunch of costumed freaks, stumbling away rejected from the circus! Well I'll tell you right now, we don't have time for clowning around! Down here, we are soldiers! A proud force of fighters, ready to protect the safety of others at the cost of our own!"

Gravot raised his hand. "Excuse me--"

"Did I tell you to speak, maggot!?" Sarge stared down Gravot with such intensity that it looked like one of his eyes would pop from its socket. "Did I give you permission to ignore the soldiers' pride and cut in with your little snippet?" He slammed the table with his other hand. "Well, now that you've interrupted us, go ahead! Spit it out!"

"Right..." Gravot sighed. "What even is 'down here', anyway?"

The office room door slid open. A a young woman with black hair and thick grey ear guards walked in.

"I heard yelling and slamming." She looked at the head of the table. "... And that's why. Get outta here, Sarge. Go home. Take a load off."

Sarge pointed one finger at the woman. "You think you can just barge in here and--"

"Boss's orders." The woman slid an envelope across the table to Sarge. "You're working yourself ragged. ... And these are rookies. Take it easy." She narrowed her gaze. "That's an order."

Sarge snatched up the envelope, tearing it open and thumbing through the paperwork. With a displeased grunt, he stomped around the table and to the door, somehow squeezing through the doorway and out of the room.

"Right." The woman walked around the table on the other side, sitting down in the chair Sarge had previously stood towering over. "I'll be taking over from here. The name's Dust. Sheila Dust." She leaned back in the chair, propping her legs up and crossing them on the table. "So... any questions before we get started?"

The wave of drones fell lifelessly to the ground. As everyone stopped to catch their breath, a second wave of drones quickly piled in through the hole in the arena wall, replacing the first. Their leader, nearly covered with thick armor, held up a hammer crackling with electricity.

Gravot sighed. "Really?"

"No." Friggs gritted his teeth, steadying his blade. "We don't have time for this."

"What?" Rock blinked. "But--"

"I'll handle this." Without ever looking back at the group, Friggs raised his blade against the drones once more.

Rock motioned to the blonde girl, who had been treating Wood Bowflex's injuries. "Come on." He helped the girl lift up Bowflex, the two of them holding him up from under his arms.

Friggs dashed through the drones with a relentless chain strike, watching as the Mechanized Masters fled to safety...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The group wandered through dimly-lit passages and hallways, seeming to endlessly stretch out from under the arena. After about ten minutes, they arrived in front of a large steel door, with a keypad and display to the left. The dim lights flickered as Rock walked up to the terminal.

"Sorry this is all so short notice," he frowned. "We'd normally go through the front entrance, and there's a whole orientation before... well, never mind."

After punching in a few numbers, the door creaked as it slowly slid open. Inside was a sprawling silver complex with humans and robots busily scurrying about, carrying weapons, paperwork, and their lunches. Towards the left was a long desk with several attendants behind it, giving and receiving orders with the Masters waiting in line. To the right, a group of Masters stretched and flexed, shouting grunts of encouragement with their colleagues.

Rock waved one hand, motioning for the party to step in and look around. "Welcome to the Castle."
