"Hey! Is anyone here hurt!?"

One pair of entrance doors was shoved wide open by a gruff-looking man with a five o'clock shadow, wearing a blue coat and black jeans. He held a long, slender blade, continuously humming and glowing a dark blue. The man motioned toward the drones with his blade, urging two others to follow him and enter the arena. To his left was a blonde-haired girl who looked to be about 20, dressed in red; to his right, a salty old sailor with a large, formidable presence.

The gruff man snapped. "You! Blue hair! What happened here!?"

"I'm not sure! Steiner broke through the wall, there's drones here--"

"Steiner!?" the girl gasped. "But this isn't like him!"

The gruff man ran up to the group preparing to fight. "Save your breath. It's time to slash first. Ask questions later."

"Aye," the sailor huffed.

The first set of levels for Super Mario Bros. 30 is complete. Won't be doing World 2 until I get more upload slots, unfortunately.

If nobody else posts before I'm done, I'll edit this post with more reviews.

Suddenly, an explosion ripped through one of the arena's walls. Smoke and dust filled the air nearly as quickly as the fighters' sudden panic. The force from the blast knocked everyone over, including Needle Asylum. As her armor collapsed against the ground a second time, a small purple crystal-like object fell from somewhere inside the armor, shattering on the floor.

The blue-haired youth from earlier shoved past the fleeing spectators in the stands, leaping over the railing and landing in the main arena. "What's going on!?"

"Well, well, well..." A voice called out from the wall of smoke from the explosion. "If it isn't Baby Blue."

"Steiner!" The boy gritted his teeth. "And that's Bomber Blue to you!"

From the smoke emerged a tall, slender young man with unruly blonde hair down to shoulder length. He wore a grey dress shirt and matching pants, with a black suit jacket buttoned up and over his shirt. Its sleeves were bright yellow, matching the young man's tie.

Needle Asylum got to her feet, staring the man down. "Hey! You're the prick who knocked me out and..." She stumbled forward onto her knees, holding herself up with her hands. "Nnngh... my head..."

"Well. You're awake," the man mused to himself. "... No matter. You've served as a distraction for long enough."

"The hell are you on about!?" The blue-haired boy clenched his fists. "Come on, Steiner! This isn't like you!"

Steiner shrugged. "Oh, come off it, Strider. Talking as if you know me..." He reached behind his back, revealing a two-handed rifle. "No... this is what I'm 'on'..."

The blue-haired boy leaped aside, shoving the injured Wood Bowflex out of the way before Steiner pulled the trigger. The shots barely grazed past the pair, leaving several dull marks in the arena's dirt.

Steiner put on a mischievous grin. "It's an AK-forty-fucking-seven. And it's Wood element. ... Though what we're after isn't exactly here, now is it?" He strapped the rifle to his back, turning his back to the group. As he began to walk away, he waved one hand out. "We'll have to do this some other time, Strider. In the meantime, I'll be sure to keep you and your little fighters here... quite busy."

As Steiner retreated through the hole in the arena's wall, weapon-wielding drones began to pile in, covering his retreat. Their visor eyes lit up, shining brightly as they targeted the party.

The blue-haired boy got to his feet, grabbing a small handgun from his waist. "Damn..."

so I played a bunch of stuff

I didn't like most of Mike's levels at all. The majority of them had the recurring theme of "do this section over and over and over and over" as well as "if you make one mistake, even if it's not immediately obvious, you lose". Don't Wake Him Up kind of led you on with the level title, but Bowser's Ultimate Scheme is completely dripping with this design flaw. The concept was neat and all, but when you cake the very beginning of the level in powerups, the first couple of attempts are always going to end up useless.

That's bad. Never do that. I shouldn't have to play 80% of the level and then die before actually playing the level.

Llama's earlier two levels are pretty spotty, but his third (Ultramarine Ambush!) was great. The beginning of the level was calm and peaceful, allowing the player to get their bearings with the stage design and the gimmick that was present... but as you move through the stage, enemies and obstacles start to get more and more hectic. You're given time to learn how the stage works before having to deal with it all, and even when things get crazy, the player is still given ample room to move around each hazard, with a power-up here and there to help ease the burden. It's not an easy level by any means, but it doesn't drag you to a dimly-lit back alley and mug you for lunch money.

Freeman's levels are... I don't know, I guess they're fun? They're not too long or overly complicated, just simple slices of whatever that are just tough enough to avoid being mindless. I had fun playing them, I wouldn't mind playing them again, I'd recommend them to others. Aside from one section near the end, Chomps n' Platforms felt like a "core" Mario level. I like seeing stuff like that. Good job.

I'll play more levels later or something.

Also, to answer Isaac: only the element itself matters (Null). A move can have any subtype (Slash/Scope/Break/Throw) and will still be affected by Red Dealer or Silver Dealer, as long as its element is Null. Don't feel bad for asking questions; how else are you ever going to get anything answered?

As the minutes tick by, the number of Masters left dwindles down to about half. Gunstar brushes himself off and grins, before a sudden quake sends him stumbling backwards. A hidden hatch on the arena's floor opened up, revealing a large blue behemoth slowly rising up onto the stage. As the platform fully rises to meet with the arena's ground, the hulking mass of armor suddenly screams out a valiant war cry. A fierce volley of stone needles fires out, helplessly pinning a group of fighters to the wall.

"C'mon! Gotta stay sharp out here!"

Oh? What's that Twin Polarity thing?

Certain moves don't have an immediate effect when used. Instead, they are placed in the user's Box. Think of the Box as a place to hold special and unique status effects. Most of them are positive and super useful, so it helps to have something Boxed when you can. However, each fighter can only hold one thing in their Box at a time; adding a different effect to the Box will overwrite the older one.

Personally I think Tornado Hold is fine. It's underwhelming when it's by itself, but when paired with any other Giga attack (Astro Crush and Ice Wave especially) standing in the corner instantly becomes super unsafe. I like the duality when Tornado Hold is paired with other moves, as it makes a dangerous area for most other attacks into a safe reprieve from the twisters; Tornado Hold's "safe spots" help the other attacks become much scarier, in a way.

The Flame Sword one's just dumb.

The suited man casually brushed one hand across the sleeves of his suit, withdrawing a deck of cards from his pockets. He begins to shuffle them absentmindedly, approaching the loosely-dressed man.

"Gettin' nervous?" The second fighter fiddles with a silver pendant around his neck, shaped like a pine tree.

"Not exactly," the first fighter replied. "... I'm sorry, have we met?"

"I don't know you..." The second fighter stretches his arms out for a moment. "But you might know me. Flying Wood Slam sound familiar?"

"Oh! You're Wood Bowflex. ... Wait, aren't you retired?"

"Doesn't stop me from havin' fun every now and then," Bowflex grinned. "Buncha posers these days, only carin' about the flashin' lights and the screamin' crowd... Where'd the fun go? The love for the fight itself?" He points a thumb towards Gunstar, off bragging to another group. "Like that Crazy Whatsit over there. Kid's got potential, but that swelled head o' his keeps holdin' 'im back."

The suited man shuffles his deck once more before stuffing it back away. "How do you figure that? He's certainly got a name for himself... so much so, it appears in the show's opening. Even I know of Crazy Gunstar."

"Yeah, well... think about this for a second." Bowflex kicked the front of his sandals against the ground, knocking bits of loose dirt off their bottoms. "If he's such a hotshot, how come he's down here with the scrubs in E-Tier? Raw talent won't smooth out somebody's rough edges." He places a hand on the suited man's shoulder. "You're pretty bright, though. What's your name again?"

"Er, I never said my name. But it's Ace," said Ace.

"Naw, not your name. I mean your wrasslin' name. Your name as a Master."

"Oh... it's uh... Card Shark."

Bowflex tilts his head and frowns. "Eh. It ain't bad. Name's not that important, anyway. Nah, you just need passion and pride in the fight. And that's a drive that I still have." He turns to face the large double doors, crouching closer to the ground. "Check it. I got the muscle. I got the beef. I got the whamma jamma tackle SLAMMA!"

"Wait, what are you--"

Before Card Shark could finish that sentence, Wood Bowflex leaped forward, zooming through the air like a human torpedo. He slammed dead center into the set of doors, knocking them wide open with his chest. On the other side was a boy with short, messy blue hair, wearing a headset and holding a remote of sorts.

"Uhh... huh. Well, I was about to come get you guys anyway, but it looks like you have that much under control. Anyway, just follow me."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Welcome back to Arena Masters! I'm your host, Lilly Floods! We've got another good one lined up for this week, featuring plenty of first-timers in E-Tier and D-Tier! Plus... the return of an old champion! Sounds exciting! Let's get started, I can hardly wait!"

"Now, for those of you at home who are new to the program, the rules here are simple. Be one of the last four Mechanized Masters still standing, and eliminate anyone who stands in your way! Befriend other fighters! Make allies on the fly! Then ditch 'em and make new ones! Anything goes when it's anyone's game!"

"Masters will enter the arena in waves, seeded based on their performance in earlier weeks. This gives a slight edge to Masters who show up later, but don't cry if your favorite happens to spawn in first! We've seen plenty of zeroes win through the ranks and become an Arena Master! ... Well, it looks like everyone's finally ready to throw down! Let's check out the action!"

"Remember, each Master has a variety of abilities and techniques at their disposal! Pummel opponents by using multiple moves in one turn as a Chain Command! Only use a single move as a Focus Command and maximize its power! Dodge or block enemy attacks with the Defense Action! Or, set aside the entire turn to Collect yourself, and regenerate a ton of Combat Energy!"

"Alright! Time to let loose!"

"Seven... eight... nine..."

The dimly-lit holding area was packed with humans, androids, and everything in between. Most were idly standing about, gripped with equal parts excitement and fear, though there were a few around the edges of the room changing clothes, shuffling through lockers, polishing various metal objects.

"Ten... eleven..."

Pacing back and forth in front of the group was a rugged old man, outfit and body both tattered and worn. He held a pen tightly in one hand, going over the checklist clamped in the steel claw serving as his other. His lazy eye hovered over his clipboard; his good eye scanned through the field of fresh fighters.

"Twelve... thirteen... fourteen... fifteen..."

The large double doors at the front of the holding area creaked loudly. One door was pushed ajar, allowing a young woman with black hair and thick grey ear guards to peer inside. She waved one gauntlet-covered hand out, catching the old man's attention.

"Yo, Nev. Five minutes."

"I'm well aware, Dust..." the man muttered in reply. "Everyone'll be ready by then."

The woman narrowed her gaze. "Don't be late." She retreated, slamming the doors shut once more.

The old man shook his head, never once looking away from the crowd. "Eighteen... nineteen..."

"Heh." A boy wearing a jacket and jeans leans against a wall, slipping a pair of sunglasses on. He glanced around the room, taking note of the more unusual characters. A man in loose garb and flip-flops. Someone huddled in a cloak. A middle-aged man in a suit. "If this is the competition..."

"Watch it, Gunstar." The old man shook his claw. "We don't need another case of infighting this month."

"Whatever, Gramps..." The boy snapped his fingers, materializing a glob of gel on his fingertips. He tossed it up and down a few times, before squeezing the gel and making it disappear. "Just havin' a little fun."

"Yeah, well... keep your 'fun' to the verbal variety." As the old man turned to put away his clipboard and list, he glanced back at the boy for a second. "And keep it clean. Some of these guys might be your allies." The man retreated behind a small door to the right, next to the locker area. Most of the others finished their preparations by now, and were patiently waiting for the double doors to open again...
