I figured it's a clever hook/generally cool way to open a game. Huge robots like X1's Bee Bladers or MM7's Mad Grinder look impressive and intimidating, but they're also much easier to hit than later bosses and have less HP. The boss of X2's intro stage is so big that it takes up the whole screen, but once you know how to play it's almost like a joke with how fast it can die.

Big bosses in general is not just a staple of the Mega Man series but something it's kind of famous for pioneering. I've seen in multiple interviews with Mega Man related developers and artists them mention how impressive it was seeing something like the Guts Dozer appear. It's easy to take for granted now, but of course back then they had to figure out how to pull off such a cool graphical trick.

Seems like further confirmation about what many people already suspected; Capcom's completely focused on trying to make triple A hits, which for them means sure-fire sellers like Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Monster Hunter, Dead Rising, etc. They're making new stuff too, like Deep Down, so it's easy to see that there's not much room for experimenting with less popular retro franchises. At least, not with a large budget; I can imagine Mega Man getting a smaller title in the future but it seems incredibly unlikely they'll ever do anything major with him again.

One thing I am hoping for is all the hubbub surrounding Super Smash Bros. will hopefully make Capcom feel the need to capitalize on Mega Man's new found popularity, and announce SOME kind of new game soon. Heck, a collaborative effort between Nintendo and Capcom to make a new Mega Man game would be ideal. However, maybe with the departure of Inafune, they really have abandoned any ideas of supporting a substantial Mega Man title...

Thanks to my -way cool bro-, I got a chance to play through the beta!

My strongest feeling after playing through was how different the game was from the Classic Mega Man series. There's plenty of similarities when it comes to things like character and level design, but just like Emmanuelf06 said, the overall play style is very different. There is a lot more emphasis on fast-paced movement with dashing and dodging, rather than stopping and shooting. In a way, I'd say it's closer to Mega Man X/Zero/ZX gameplay wise, while the world/setting is instead mirroring Classic Mega Man.

The boss battle was an interesting change of pace. like Emmanuelf06 mentioned, it's encouraged to strike the boss with rapid-fire since there's no immediate hit invincibility. However, after so much damage he'll turn purple and requires(?) you to dash into him, which feels cool and is fortunately a safe maneuver.

The factory and enemies and effects look pretty cool overall, but there's plenty of things to nitpick about graphically. The biggest issue to me, personally, is that things look a little dull and grey. I would like to see how things looked with some increased contrast between characters and the background plus some more vibrant colors.

Anyways, didn't expect to be playing this so soon! Very cool surprise!

Haha, I had a tough time with the Bonne fight until I used the Dive Kick. Makes it much, MUCH easier!

I agree about Trigger's hair; maybe I'm wrong, but the NES color palette has at least ONE brown color, right? Maybe they felt it'd stick out too much, or Tarbo wanted to stick to his traditional sprite (there's an old video he has featuring a similar looking Trigger sprite).

Again, I feel the 8-bit approach was taken because that's what the programmer (Tarbo) is familiar with. Anything beyond that gameplay, art, or music-wise would have increased both the difficulty and time needed to create this project, one that was already working with an extremely limited budget and limited time frame (the game was made to celebrate Mega Man's 25th anniversary). One of the (very few) example of a Mega Man game going beyond 8-bit, Mega Man X: Corrupted, has been in development for over 5 years now. Any fan-project like this is something that the developers are having to work on while dealing with school/work/life, so it's very admirable in my eyes to plan and complete something in a year.

Anyways, thanks cool dudes for playing the game. It was pretty tough for me to get through it, but it was also exciting and rewarding to see the cool art and hear music both familiar and new. I can't help but still hope for a day when we'll see the return of Legends 3.

Optimism!

I'm really glad to see some positive energy in here! I too am looking forward to play it. I am a pretty big Legends fan!

I wasn't aware of Tarbo's involvement in this so this could be pretty darn interesting!

Frik, that's great to hear. Love your avatar btw, my fave char from KOF!

Just found out Heat Man worked on the translation, which is supe cool!

Personally, I'm very excited about this! Here's why:

It includes new, exclusive artwork by Hideki Ishikawa, one of the main artists for the Mega Man Legends series (and other Mega Man games)
It has new music tracks composed by Makoto Tomozawa, the main composer behind Mega Man Legends 1 and 2 (+Other Mega Man and Capcom games)
The game was programmed by Tarbo (aka "Megacocorock"), the talent behind other Mega Man fan games like Roll-chan
It's an impressive fully fan-fueled game that shows support for both Legends 3 and the Mega Man series
    I like Mega Man games

It looks like it's going to be a lot of fun, and as someone who spent many nights eagerly crawling the Devroom forums, I'm psyched to have a game where I can explore more of the Legends 3 world. Furthermore, I appreciate all the effort that's gone into this project... it's one thing to hear fans say they're going to make something, and something else entirely to be delivering a finished game!

I can understand wanting something beyond 8-bit style when it comes to Mega Man games, but as a fellow fangame developer I also understand being resourceful. This team simply chose a style, stuck with it, and finished a complete game in a little over a year. To me, that's heartfelt dedication, not laziness.

Just played some online multiplayer and it was cool! Think we only went to one new map, but I saw some cool changes in the other ones. Wave Burner feels like a hot weapon type we've been missing for years
