I hate when games, mostly RPGs I guess, have certain spells and attacks which SHOULD be powerful and are not. What I'm talking about are things like those 'instant death spells' you see in games like Final Fantasy (is it just called Death?). I know they don't want to give players the ability to just one hit KO every boss in the game, but they nullify it to the point where's its pretty much useless. All the impact it was meant to have is gone.
A good solution to this, I feel, would be to put greater, more innovative risks in using it rather than making it worthless. It could be something as simple as it having a chance to kill you instead, or that they have to be below a certain HP before it works (the MMBN and Starforce games had these as 'Blackhole' attack; heavy damage but only worked if they had that amount of hp or less).
I know a lot of people don't like quirky, chance attacks or basically any technique that has a good chance of working against you, but I just hate the uselessness of adding something that has a descriptor of being 'THE ULTIMATE SPELL!' and yet it does nothing 99% of the time.
