MM8BDM Discussion / Re: MM8BDM Wiki
« on: October 21, 2010, 08:08:43 PM »
Alright, folks.  Proposition time.

I propose that we start renaming the Stage pages to their proper names.  I'm not sure who started the trend of "XXXXXman (Stage)", but I'm of the firm believe that enough is enough.  My proposed name change?  Simply this:
Quote
"XXXXXman (Stage)" -> "XXXXX Man (DM)"
Why "DM" instead of "Stage"?  Because all the Robot Master stages are Deathmatch stages.  Someone may later decide to convert some of these stages into other formats, or make their own stages with similar names.  Furthermore, it helps you get a better idea of what kind of stage it is just from looking at the title. (For example, "Commando Man (CTF)", "Pirate Man (DM)", and so forth.)  I would probably just do it outright, but 1. I'm a normal user of the Wiki, so moving pages en masse is impossible for me (I'm limited to 2 moves per 5 minutes or so), and 2. people are still working on stage pages as well as making new stage pages.

So, what do you think, folks?

Just what the title says, folks.  Granted, I got bored some time after and made my own...but still.  So uh...rather than re-download the entire game, any chance I could get a copy from one of you folks?

*crash lands on the floor*  Uuuuugh.  You guys.  Why?  T_T  I just noticed that the naming trend for stages on the wiki is "XXXXXman" instead of "XXXXX Man", like it is in the game.  Now I have to update all those teeeeemplaaaaates I made for the new stages page...  Urgh...  I'll do it later today.  Tired now.  x_x

By the way, Joseph Collins, nice job on not only getting rid of the offensive changes, but making the front page look amazing!
You're welcome.

Sidenote: I call the little guy in the Modifications icon "Uberman".  :3

Actually, there's certain things you can change in the MM8BDM-v1a.pk3 file that won't stop you from being able to join/host custom servers.  Bots are one of them.  Granted, it's never a good idea to edit the main PK3 file when the "-file" command param works just as well, but if you absolutely want to...  In any case, music, bots, and bot chats can be changed without negative effect (music because it's entirely local, and bots because they're entire remote), but weapon scripts, levels, and most everything else that is read and sent by both the remote and local hosts (IE your computer and their computer) can't be changed because it will cause a version mismatch.

Yep.  That's what the shortcut's for.  Just load the bots up ("-file bot_Shinobi.pk3 bot_DocRobotCustom.pk3") and run Skirmish mode like normal.  The bots will be at the end/beginning of the bot list, between Base (Megaman) and Protoman.

Big Huge Note: This tutorial mostly applies to Mega Man 8-Bit Deathmatch v1a.  The next version will have a launcher that can run custom content in Single Player/Offline mode.

There seems to be a degree of confusion how to run custom content other than skins.  A lot of people assume that absolutely anything in the "skins" directory will automatically load for them.  Well, that's just not true.  Due to the way Skulltag works, if you place a PK3/WAD/ZIP into "skins" directory, the game will only look within that file for "SKININFO" lumps.  It will never read anything but the SKININFO lump and the associated sprites.  You simply cannot load custom maps, bots, or bot chats in this way.  This is due to the fact if you're overriding certain base content and try to go online, the server might kick you out with a "version mismatch" error. (Consider it an "anti-cheat" tactic.)
To summarize, skins go in "MM8BDM/skins" and will automatically load when you run your game.  Anything else put there will more than likely not load automatically.

On another note, there doesn't seem to be a way to run ZIPs/PK3s within ZIPs/PK3s.  For example, let's say you run the game with "File1.PK3".  Let's say File1.PK3 has "File2.PK3" and a couple of bots within it, and in File2.PK3 are some custom maps.  Skulltag will never actually read File2.PK3 for some reason.  So...if you have a lot of custom bots or maps that you want to load, you may have to load them individually.  The game will read WAD files within PK3/ZIP files, however.

This tutorial will go over the Windows-specific stuff in loading custom content into your copy of Mega Man 8-Bit Deathmatch.  If someone else wants to add Linux or MacOS instructions, please do!

That's pretty much what I did, too.  XD  Also, Drill Bomb does some serious damage to Metool Daddy.  If you're really clever, you can fire four before he hides.

Since I don't know what to sprite, I'll sprite my own version of Roll, I don't like the childish sprite from the games.

That's my version of Roll.
I've been putting off converting "OVA Roll" into "Classic Roll" for a while.  Why OVA Roll instead of current Roll, which would technically be much quicker to do?  Well...mostly because I hate the current Roll's sneaking animation.  In any case, If you make this into a skin, that'll definitely save me the trouble.  XD  *pinches those sprites for comic usage*
