Mega Man Discussion / Godot's Basement--Mega Man X: Command Mission
« on: August 08, 2011, 02:33:05 AM »
I bought this game at my local Gamestop for $6 just this evening. I played it for over 40 minutes. I already want to shove it back down the throats of whoever made it. Hell, I'll settle for the team behind Mega Man X6. If it wasn't for their brilliant idea to make another X game behind Keiji Inafune's back, this atrocity would've never made it to shelves. They could have stopped at X8 and things would have been just fine!

I'll add on to this review as I go on in this game, but here are reasons why I already hate the game.

First, the first area of the game is so dark, it's hard to see around the place. At least they had the decency to put a map in the bottom right so that I have some idea of what's going on, but that doesn't help very much with the second and biggest reason I hate this game. Random enemy encounters. They aren't difficult, but when they pop up at an average rate of one per minute, it gets repetitive after a while. That and it automatically reorients me after the fight so I have to take a few seconds to adjust that and take the chance of, surprise, another fucking enemy encounter. Screw you, Command Mission team and the horse you rode in on. Oh, and reason number three is that weapon energy always starts on 25%. At least in the first area. Regardless of whether you built up 100% or drained all of it with your last attack, you start at 25% and charge up 25% when it comes to your turn in the rotation. At least it also has the courtesy of showing the turn order and how it changes when you use certain attacks.

Because of the clusterfuck of random encounters, I can't figure out how to deactivate the lock on the third floor door. Can anyone help me with that so I can continue this god-awful game?

General Gaming Discussion / Godot's Basement: Facebreaker
« on: June 25, 2011, 10:12:58 PM »
Hello, Cutstuff community. I am Godot, legendary prosecutor. I've never lost a case. But this is the one game (ROM hacks don't count) I have found that I cannot win.

Let's start with what Facebreaker is. Facebreaker is a cartoon-like boxing game where you can pick from a colorful cast of characters and duke it out in the ring. It looks more like a fighting game disguised as a boxing game. It is from EA Sports, the makers of Fight Night, a much more realistic series of boxing games that, months ago, released Fight Night: Champion (which I, sadly, cannot get for I am not 17 yet).

But I digress. Back on Facebreaker, you push buttons to punch, throw, block, dodge and parry punches (this is only available for the PS3 and XBox 360). The only action involving any control stick is movement. You first have to deplete the opponent's green meter, which covers a red meter much like green health covered yellow in the Mega Man Zero series, ZX and ZXA, then empty the red meter while it replenishes when you don't punch. When you string two punches (you only get high and low basic punches, which you can tap the button for jabs or hold for hooks) in the same area, you fill one bar of a meter at the bottom corner of your side of the screen. Press the breaker button set for your system and you can perform a powerful breaker punch.

0 bars= Haybreaker (just an uppercut; nothing special)
1 bar= Bonebreaker (more damage than Haybreaker; some characters use Bonebreakers as stun combos)
2 bars= Groundbreaker (another step up the damage ladder; when HIT 'EM AGAIN appears, press the corresponding button to hit the opponent again for more damage)
3 bars= Skybreaker (knock your opponent sky-high with a two-puncher; same thing for HIT 'EM AGAIN)
4 bars (full)= Facebreaker (the signature move of the game; press the breaker button once, hit 'em again, then when the cue comes, hit the breaker button to pull off a Facebreaker)

You can win by knockout (knock your opponent down the set number of times), win in sudden death (after the prescribed rounds end, one more winner-take-all round plays; first to score a knockdown wins) or pull off a Facebreaker (which also gives you their smashed-up face on display as a reward).

Sounds simple, right?

WRONG.

EA Sports must have loved the thought of screwing players over by making every single difficulty except the Practice Mode dummy setting very difficult to defeat. I tried Easy Mode in the exhibition "Fight!!" mode and got knocked out after 3 downs. I didn't even floor my opponent once. And the crappy thing about it is that there is no count, again contributing to the thought that it's a fighting game in a boxing setting. I couldn't pull more than a few breakers. When I filled the meter even one tick, he punched me. Keep in mind that if you take a hit before you pull off a Breaker Move, your entire breaker meter empties, so if you took a measly jab when you were about to finish Molotov with a Facebreaker, tough.

And then there's "Brawl for it All," the essential Championship Mode of the game. You start off in the Arcade and you stay in the Arcade. You might be able to beat the first guy easily, but then Steve is impossible. Even if you pick the lowest difficulty, which I did, he won't perform a Facebreaker unless you just don't defend, but unless you get a cheap knockdown in Sudden Death (provided you GET to sudden death) then you'll get Steve's victory taunt phrase. The results break down punches and display the loser's face.

You can create your own boxers, give then whatever face you want and style them after whoever. Characters have their own stun combo, which if you pull off, you can stun your opponent for a few shots and maybe pull off a breaker. Miss, though, and you'll lose all that energy. I don't have Internet for my 360, so I cannot review online.

Overall, the game might have at least been bearable had it not decided to make Von Kaiser my first opponent and Mike Tyson my second.

5.7 out of 10

MM8BDM Discussion / Iron Wily's Punch-Out!!
« on: June 23, 2011, 09:35:26 PM »
ALBERT WILY is waiting for your challenge!

It dawned on me after I thought of the P.A. during Roboenza when I tried out zombie boxing and thought there could be a whole mode for this. Without the zombies, of course, since that couldn't work out. If programmable:

-The mode will be set in Duel to start out with.

-Each player will automatically be equipped with a Power Adapter.

-Knock each other senseless. Maybe the fire button could be a regular punch and the secondary fire could be an uppercut that recharges once used.

-When you're fragged, you're down. I'm trying to think how getting back up before the 10-count would work. Maybe you respawn outside and have 10 seconds to get back in. The first time you get downed, you run back at normal speed, but each one after slows your pace. After 5 or 6, it's practically impossible. Either that or the fraglimit will just be set to 5 or 6, do away with the count and just do forced respawn so no one can stall the clock.

-If rounds are possible, each match consists of 3 minute-long rounds. If they aren't, then we'll go with how Super Punch-Out!! did it and just have a 3-minute clock and set the fraglimit to 3.

-A few ring-type maps might need to be created, though all that's needed is a small square. Ring ropes and arena feel optional.

If anyone has any ideas to contribute to this or would even like to take on the project, then feel free to post here.

I will be fair in all findings regarding violations. Barring the administrators, my decision is final. As for the rules of the individual contests, I don't want to take up all this space to explain those, so I will list those off as we get to those events. Below is a list of  events for the Games:

Help & Editing / Can't access Chaos server
« on: April 07, 2011, 12:20:38 AM »
I have all the .wads needed. The Chaos Generator 1 .wad. The 4-team .wad. The latest version of the game. It won't let me on because the level authentication fails. Anyone want to take a guess as to why?

MM8BDM Discussion / The Megalympics!
« on: April 02, 2011, 07:43:58 PM »
I had this idea that, from what I've heard from others about it, just might be something worth hosting.

The MM8BDM Megalympics is a series of competitions from all modes of gameplay. Entrants who submit their names will go into the contestants' pool. Once we decide to start, the pool will be split into 4 random teams: Light, Wily, Cossack and X. Just so we have clear tiebreakers, all events except LMS and TLMS will run to the conclusion of a time limit. Each team will select their representative in individual events, but will need to send each player into an event at least a set number of times (which will be determined once we know who all is competing.)

Events will be divided into individual, 2-team and 4-team contests. Individual events will have 3 heats in which teams choose a different player each heat. 2-team events will have a round-robin tournament in which each team plays each other team once. 4-team events will also have 3 heats and everyone on the team will play. This will change if we end up with more than 32 players.

For each event, players can earn points for their team by placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd in a heat or 2-team tournament. In overall results for individual and 4-team, the 1st and 2nd place teams earn points. At the end of the games, the team with the most points wins the Megalympics. Your prize: a sense of accomplishment since there likely won't be a medal for this.

We'll work out the exact details if enough interest goes into this.

Any takers?

I can't access servers that use the Ivory Map Pack despite the fact that I have it. Is there something I can do about this? What all would I need?

MM8BDM Discussion / What to do...?
« on: January 14, 2011, 08:20:17 AM »
Just a while ago, I decided to drop in on a 2-player CTF server. I found Mizaru and someone by a username I can't remember at the moment (It'sblackdark or something along those lines.) Anyway, Mizaru had to leave and left the new guy for me to help with any questions he had about MM8BDM. After we slugged it out for a while playing 1 vs. 1 CTF and me giving him the occasional bit of information, before I left, he asked me,

"Do you have a server where we could meet, Coach?"

I answered I have one off and on every once in a great while, but the thing that shocked me was the "Coach" bit. I don't consider myself close to a position to be teaching. In fact, I'm a student of a skilled player myself. I might be able to go as far as the basics such as the rules and pointing out traps in stages and tricks to make it up stairs faster, and maybe that's as far as he wants to go before he sets out on his own, but if that's not the case, then I have no idea where to lead him. Beyond the basic knowledge and skill, it's the blind leading the blind. Not that I don't want to teach him. I'm just not sure if I should or if I'm able to teach him any tactic or trick that someone of moderate skill would know of and use.

How do I answer this apparent call?

Help & Editing / Problem with Settings
« on: November 27, 2010, 03:22:03 PM »
Since I downloaded skins into my 8BDM folder, I've noticed that the game resets my settings every time I pull it up. I have to open 8BDM from the actual folder instead of the Downloads section on my computer since Skulltag has to be in the same folder. What would you recommend I do so I don't have to configure my controls and settings every time?

MM8BDM Discussion / Wear the Pants. Join the Pants Legion.
« on: November 12, 2010, 11:58:46 PM »
Okay, this spurred from a random comment last night, but I decided I could make a full-fledged, unofficial MM8BDM group, the Pants Legion. Last night, we were playing the Darkman level on Roboenza mode. A player who used the name TTM at the time (I don't know if he/she still does) made a comment about the Agent group on at that time and something about pants (TTM, if you're on here, please verify what you said 'cause I don't remember), so I decided to change my name from Agent Bass to Pants Bass and eventually Protopants. So, here we are. Join if you like, just stick "pants" somewhere in your name.

Our motto: "Wear the pants."
