Seeing as there are strong points about the balance of the current teams, I've decided to redraw teams. Until the majority of the contestants (12 out of the 23 entrants) agree to the new lineup, though, the current one stands. In addition, I will also lay out the rules for Deathmatch.

(click to show/hide)

Note that with the team maker I used, I also randomly determined the order the teams appeared from top to bottom. The order determined was X, Wily, Cossack, Light, meaning Light got 5 members (or X if the first drawing upholds.)

As I said, please vote by making posts since the computer I'm using keeps messing up on the polls. A majority decision (12 votes clinches) will determine if this updated list divides the teams or if the original stays.

Cast your vote (optional: state your reason): Should the 1st or 2nd team drawing be used for the Games?

That was till i took a look at the teams again and saw it only had 5 members

Which is why I made rules concerning the shorthanded Mr. X team. Individual events will have 5 heats, all featuring one representative from each team. The top 8 scoring players move on to the finals in one big game to determine the winners. Each event will be timed except for LMS, which I have rules figured out for as far as determining who advances.

None of these will be round robins. Either they will be in Olympic format, in bracket format or for 4-team events, get everyone you can on at once and play 3 times since those won't take long to settle each event.

48
How would I judge that? By watching them? Getting input from them? No matter what way I cut it, it's not going to be perfect. The best way I could divide them up was by chance.

49
Like I said, it was completely random. You could have landed with the Harlem Globetrotters, the Washington Generals or anyone in between.

*cue drumroll*

Ladies and gentlemen it is June 26th and as of the time I started typing this post, it is 3:00 PM according to my clock.

Registration for the 8-Bit Megalympic Games is officially closed. No new contestants may enter as of the time of this post.

I thank all of you for your interest in partaking in the first-ever Megalympic Games and I hope this turns out to be a great success as we run it to its conclusion. Without further delay, here are your teams for the 2011 8-Bit Megalympic Games, chosen at random from the contestant pool:
(click to show/hide)

Please do not request any team changes; I did warn all of you beforehand that the teams would be randomly selected to attempt to be as fair as possible with distribution.

Here are the rules concerning shorthanded teams:

-Individual events: Teams Light, Wily and Cossack will choose one member to sit out the event. That same player, be forewarned, may not sit out another individual event until every other team member has.

-All team events: Once the time to start the contest begins, teams will even out by adjusting so they have as many members as the team with fewer players. If you want 5-on-5, encourage your team to be there. Again, once a player sits out, they may not sit out that event again until all other team members have taken their turn in the spectator box.

If you cannot make a certain event or events, please post here in the thread so at least your team and I will know you won't be there so we may adjust accordingly. Responsibility falls on you if you do not show up to an event and you didn't notify me ahead of time or you do not have a good reason for being gone.

Dropouts from the Games altogether will only go unwarned to other tournament/special event directors if there is a good reason why. I will be the judge of what is and isn't a good reason. Real life issues suddenly getting in the way (such as work or family emergencies) will be excused; just not wanting to finish will not cut it. You made a commitment to compete and you are now committed to a team. These games do not ask a lot of your time per day.

Now, for the first event of the Games:

Individual- Deathmatch

I'll get those rules and official matchups at a later time, possibly tomorrow. My laptop will not start up, so I'll have to get it wiped and download MM8BDM again. In the meantime, the desktop in the study's all I've got. With that, I also have a need of hosts. Anyone not playing who would like to host can; just remember the rules laid out in post 1. If you are going to host, please also put [8BMG] in front of the server name so contestants know you are running a Megalympics server.

An idea for those who are playing in the consolation:

Currently, there are two brackets with two rounds-of-16. The losers from the main bracket currently are slated to be out of the tournament.

Here is my idea, take those that lose in the main bracket round-of-16 and create a second round-of-16 after the first consolation round-of-16 ends.

So, in other words, the winners from the first consolation 16 would play the losers from the main bracket round of 16 for the right to play in the consolation quarterfinals.

Is this a good idea, or might this extend the tournament too much?

This idea is pretty much double elimination with the group stage acting as one loss for those who didn't qualify for the championship round of 16.

General Gaming Discussion / Godot's Basement: Facebreaker
« on: June 25, 2011, 10:12:58 PM »
Hello, Cutstuff community. I am Godot, legendary prosecutor. I've never lost a case. But this is the one game (ROM hacks don't count) I have found that I cannot win.

Let's start with what Facebreaker is. Facebreaker is a cartoon-like boxing game where you can pick from a colorful cast of characters and duke it out in the ring. It looks more like a fighting game disguised as a boxing game. It is from EA Sports, the makers of Fight Night, a much more realistic series of boxing games that, months ago, released Fight Night: Champion (which I, sadly, cannot get for I am not 17 yet).

But I digress. Back on Facebreaker, you push buttons to punch, throw, block, dodge and parry punches (this is only available for the PS3 and XBox 360). The only action involving any control stick is movement. You first have to deplete the opponent's green meter, which covers a red meter much like green health covered yellow in the Mega Man Zero series, ZX and ZXA, then empty the red meter while it replenishes when you don't punch. When you string two punches (you only get high and low basic punches, which you can tap the button for jabs or hold for hooks) in the same area, you fill one bar of a meter at the bottom corner of your side of the screen. Press the breaker button set for your system and you can perform a powerful breaker punch.

0 bars= Haybreaker (just an uppercut; nothing special)
1 bar= Bonebreaker (more damage than Haybreaker; some characters use Bonebreakers as stun combos)
2 bars= Groundbreaker (another step up the damage ladder; when HIT 'EM AGAIN appears, press the corresponding button to hit the opponent again for more damage)
3 bars= Skybreaker (knock your opponent sky-high with a two-puncher; same thing for HIT 'EM AGAIN)
4 bars (full)= Facebreaker (the signature move of the game; press the breaker button once, hit 'em again, then when the cue comes, hit the breaker button to pull off a Facebreaker)

You can win by knockout (knock your opponent down the set number of times), win in sudden death (after the prescribed rounds end, one more winner-take-all round plays; first to score a knockdown wins) or pull off a Facebreaker (which also gives you their smashed-up face on display as a reward).

Sounds simple, right?

WRONG.

EA Sports must have loved the thought of screwing players over by making every single difficulty except the Practice Mode dummy setting very difficult to defeat. I tried Easy Mode in the exhibition "Fight!!" mode and got knocked out after 3 downs. I didn't even floor my opponent once. And the crappy thing about it is that there is no count, again contributing to the thought that it's a fighting game in a boxing setting. I couldn't pull more than a few breakers. When I filled the meter even one tick, he punched me. Keep in mind that if you take a hit before you pull off a Breaker Move, your entire breaker meter empties, so if you took a measly jab when you were about to finish Molotov with a Facebreaker, tough.

And then there's "Brawl for it All," the essential Championship Mode of the game. You start off in the Arcade and you stay in the Arcade. You might be able to beat the first guy easily, but then Steve is impossible. Even if you pick the lowest difficulty, which I did, he won't perform a Facebreaker unless you just don't defend, but unless you get a cheap knockdown in Sudden Death (provided you GET to sudden death) then you'll get Steve's victory taunt phrase. The results break down punches and display the loser's face.

You can create your own boxers, give then whatever face you want and style them after whoever. Characters have their own stun combo, which if you pull off, you can stun your opponent for a few shots and maybe pull off a breaker. Miss, though, and you'll lose all that energy. I don't have Internet for my 360, so I cannot review online.

Overall, the game might have at least been bearable had it not decided to make Von Kaiser my first opponent and Mike Tyson my second.

5.7 out of 10

Alright, competitors, the time has come. The 8-Bit Megalympic Games have been put off long enough.

The deadline to join the 8-Bit Megalympic Games is Sunday, June 26th at 3:00 PM Central Daylight Time. If anyone wishes to partake in the Games, register soon because once the teams are drawn, no new contestants may enter.

Currently registered contestants will receive a PM reminder tonight so they may know what time to expect the teams to be posted. The date, time and event for the first contest will also be revealed after the drawing.

I had a thought on how rounds could play out. The timers on the zombies from Roboenza...what if, at the end of that timer, the players automatically returned to their spawn points? Or even if they had to return to their corners and had invincibility after the timer ended until they got back?

I'm mostly throwing out ideas. Anyone who wants to try doing this is welcome, though I think it will likely only happen in theory than someone taking it up and programming it.

That's fine. From the votes, I seem to have the most for starting after tomorrow. Any day one would like to suggest?

ALBERT WILY is waiting for your challenge!

It dawned on me after I thought of the P.A. during Roboenza when I tried out zombie boxing and thought there could be a whole mode for this. Without the zombies, of course, since that couldn't work out. If programmable:

-The mode will be set in Duel to start out with.

-Each player will automatically be equipped with a Power Adapter.

-Knock each other senseless. Maybe the fire button could be a regular punch and the secondary fire could be an uppercut that recharges once used.

-When you're fragged, you're down. I'm trying to think how getting back up before the 10-count would work. Maybe you respawn outside and have 10 seconds to get back in. The first time you get downed, you run back at normal speed, but each one after slows your pace. After 5 or 6, it's practically impossible. Either that or the fraglimit will just be set to 5 or 6, do away with the count and just do forced respawn so no one can stall the clock.

-If rounds are possible, each match consists of 3 minute-long rounds. If they aren't, then we'll go with how Super Punch-Out!! did it and just have a 3-minute clock and set the fraglimit to 3.

-A few ring-type maps might need to be created, though all that's needed is a small square. Ring ropes and arena feel optional.

If anyone has any ideas to contribute to this or would even like to take on the project, then feel free to post here.

Projects & Creative / Re: Screw Scramble - New team based game mode!
« on: June 21, 2011, 04:25:39 AM »
Mess's game modes are great. It's just a shame they usually turn into camping games. Welcome to Screw Scramble, aka The Camping Game 2.0.

Some problems I ran into during the TDM version:

-Auto and Reggae are placed in random locations. That means you have to find your respective bank before the screws you carry have any value to you. They also have nasty tendencies to stick themselves in corners or high-traffic hallways and also too close to each other even in larger stages, making finding them and getting screws to them all the more unnecessarily difficult.

-There probably should be something in place that allows you to dump in screws for the other team. Lots of bank camping led to more focus on setting up a tent and throwing Flame Blast or Hyper Bomb or whatever around the bank rather than getting screws for one's own. Just as a deterrent from hovering around the other team's bank.

-Even with Team Deathmatch, players seem to spawn in alternating patterns nowhere near the banks, again because of the random positions of Auto and Reggae. I think they should be in set places in each stage if there's a way to program that.

The mode is a great idea and it isn't half bad, but lopsided matches run amok when one team finds Auto in the middle of their spawn points and the other team finds Reggae across the map in the middle of the first team's spawn points.

You won't be teamed up with anyone specific. I draw names for teams.
